Date:

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, has donated hand washing facilities, tissue papers, carbolic and liquid soaps to help the fight against the COVID-19 disease in its host communities.

The items would serve all the Mine’s nineteen host communities.

Mr Stephen Adjei, Senior Manager- Sustainability, who made the presentation on behalf of the company, said the last few weeks have been challenging as they had to adjust to the reality of the COVID-19 outbreak and the impact it had made on their daily lives.

“For us at AngloGold Ashanti, we have to reposition ourselves and put in preventive measures to protect our employees, contractors and host communities from the Coronavirus pandemic,” he said.

Mr Adjei stated that as part of their Emergency Response Plans they have instituted measures such as the promotion of frequent hand hygiene, social distancing and restrictions on local travels on the Mine sites.

So far, all employees, contractors and visitors have complied with these measures, and management encourages them to continue with the practice, Mr Adjei noted.

He emphasized that the Mine was currently undertaking rigorous educational campaigns throughout their operational communities to sensitise the citizery on how to combat the spread of the disease.

On Social Distancing, he explained that the company had adopted the use of community radio for the sensitization exercise.

Mr Adjei announced that about 2,000 fliers and stickers on COVID-19 have so been distributed as part of the campaign, while posters and banners have been hoisted at vantage points throughout the communities.

He said Iduapriem Mine was part of the COVID-19 Municipal Emergency Response Team and they were working closely with the Ghana Health Service through the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly to construct a fully resourced isolation centre for the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.

Receiving the items, Mr Manasseh Sackey, Assembly member for Teberebie Electoral Area, thanked the Mining Company for the gesture.
