Armenia says two soldiers killed along Azerbaijan border

Date:

Armenia has reported the death of two soldiers after new exchanges of fire at the border with Azerbaijan.

One man was killed by a sniper from the Azerbaijani side in the Nakhchivan region, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday. Another soldier was fatally wounded in the evening amid further incidents in the province of Gegharkunik.

The two sides traded blame for the incidents, with the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defence accusing the Armenian side of provocations and misinformation.

Azerbaijan said there had not been any victims among its ranks.

The border between the countries has been the scene of conflict for months.

The two former Soviet republics went to war over Nagorno-Karabakh in September last year, with Azerbaijan reclaiming large parts of the territory it lost to Armenia in the early 1990s.

More than 6,500 people are known to have died in the fighting. Despite a ceasefire mediated by Russia, tensions continue to flare up.

Armenia repeatedly accused its opponent of having invaded its territory.
