The West African Economic and Monetary Union lifts Mali’s ban.

Date:

The West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) lifted Mali’s suspension from its organisations and institutions on Saturday.

Mali has been suspended from the organisation since January 2022 in order to penalise the junta’s desire to stay in power for another five years.

Following the first coup in August 2020, Mali was also expelled from the ECOWAS regional union.

After the junta’s proclamation of a transition phase until March 2024, trade and financial restrictions were eased in July 2022.

The Malian people decisively accepted a draught of a new Constitution in June, paving the way for a restoration to civilian governance in March 2024.
