Arne Slot: Liverpool hierarchy reportedly set summer exit as Xabi Alonso links intensify

Date:

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have reportedly reached a definitive conclusion regarding the future of manager Arne Slot, with sources suggesting the Dutchman is set to depart Anfield at the conclusion of the current season.

Despite a massive £440 million summer investment and a recent 12-game unbeaten run, the internal mood at Liverpool appears to be one of transition. While the club remains mathematically in the hunt for Champions League qualification and active in the FA Cup, the “pronounced decline” from last season’s title-winning form has prompted the hierarchy to plan for a new direction.

The Decision to Wait

Reliable club insiders, including journalist David Lynch, indicate that while FSG is prepared to move on, they are reluctant to make a mid-season change. The primary reason for this patience is the lack of a suitable interim candidate and the club’s desire for a seamless transition in the summer.

“They clearly want to get to the end of the season with Slot if they can,” Lynch noted. “They don’t want to make a mid-season managerial change… it would clearly be better to make the change in the summer.”

The Return of a Legend?

The timing of Slot’s expected departure aligns significantly with the availability of former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. Following his exit from Real Madrid, Alonso has reportedly opted to wait until the summer before returning to management.

Alonso, who was a key figure at Anfield during his playing days, is widely considered the “handpicked” successor for the Reds. His success at Bayer Leverkusen and his deep bond with the Liverpool fanbase make him the standout candidate for the role.

A Season of Struggles

Slot’s tenure this season has been marked by inconsistency. A difficult autumn saw the team suffer nine defeats in 12 games, and while recent results have stabilized, performances have lacked the high-intensity “swagger” associated with the club’s recent history.

Slot himself has been candid about the challenges, pointing to a grueling injury list and the difficulties of evolving the team’s tactical identity. However, with the pressure mounting and Champions League qualification far from guaranteed, the “noise” surrounding his future continues to grow.

What’s Next for the Reds?

For now, Arne Slot remains in charge, with the backing to finish the campaign. The club is already looking toward a “record-breaking” summer transfer window to support the next manager, with up to five significant signings planned.

As the season reaches its business end, the Anfield faithful will be watching closely to see if Slot can leave on a high or if the transition to a new era under Alonso begins sooner than expected.
