The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high-level bilateral talks with the Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Dr. Kunimitsu Ayano, to explore new frontiers in trade, technology, and industrial cooperation.
The meeting, held on Thursday, 15th January 2026, comes at a pivotal time as Dr. Kunimitsu leads a significant delegation of 35 Japanese companies to Ghana. This working visit is expected to catalyze private-sector partnerships, driving mutual economic growth and strengthening the long-standing friendship between the two nations.
Economic Recovery and Investment Opportunities
Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa commended the resilience of Japanese businesses that remained committed to Ghana throughout recent global economic shifts. He highlighted the country’s improving macroeconomic indicators—specifically the stabilization of the Cedi and declining inflation—as evidence that Ghana is once again a prime destination for foreign direct investment.
A key focus of the discussion was the government’s drive for industrialization and value addition. The Minister specifically referenced Ghana’s vital cocoa exports to Japan, reaffirming a commitment to revitalizing production through farm rehabilitation and enhanced extension services to ensure a steady, high-quality supply.

Celebrating a Century of Partnership
Looking ahead, both leaders identified 2027 as a landmark year for Ghana-Japan relations. Three major milestones will be celebrated:
- The 100th Anniversary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s arrival and medical research in Ghana.
- The 70th Anniversary of formal diplomatic relations.
- The 50th Anniversary of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) programme.
Both sides agreed that these anniversaries offer a unique platform to honor historical ties while launching new collaborative ventures. Dr. Kunimitsu Ayano noted that the legacy of Dr. Noguchi remains a powerful symbol of the deep people-to-people connection between Accra and Tokyo.
Exploring Frontiers in Technology
In a forward-looking segment of the meeting, the private sector’s interest in Ghana’s digital and technological landscape was brought to the fore. Mr. Yuya Nakamura, CEO of Axelspace, highlighted how emerging technologies and space-based data could revolutionize key sectors in Ghana, including agriculture, climate resilience, and public service delivery.
Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa assured the delegation that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to science, technology, and innovation as the primary engines for national development.
Strengthening the Bond
The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to maintain sustained dialogue. Also in attendance were the Ambassador of Japan to Ghana, H.E. Hiroshi Yoshimoto, and the Director of the First Africa Division of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Mr. Taro Kawase.
