The Ministry of Transport has initiated a formal investigation into the auction of over 300 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses, following reports that some units were sold for prices as low as GH¢2,500.
The probe seeks to determine the transparency and merit of the auction process, which reportedly took place in the period leading up to the 2024 general elections. The government’s move follows public concerns regarding the valuation of state assets and the need for accountability in the management of national transport infrastructure.
Ensuring Transparency in State Assets
Speaking on the matter, the Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, emphasized that the investigation is a necessary step to ensure that state properties are handled with the highest level of integrity. He has instructed the management and boards of Metro Mass Transit Limited to conduct a thorough review of the auction procedures.
“We need to determine whether these auctions were conducted properly and whether the prices were justified,” the Minister stated. “It is essential that we maintain clarity and transparency in all operations concerning Metro Mass Transit.”
Addressing Transport Challenges
Beyond the investigation, the Ministry is also focusing on immediate interventions to alleviate the transport challenges currently faced by commuters across the country. In collaboration with various transport unions, the government has introduced measures aimed at improving the availability and reliability of public transport services.
The Minister assured the public that these interventions are designed to provide swift relief and enhance the overall commuting experience for Ghanaians.
A Call for Responsible Stewardship
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on the principles of responsible stewardship and the protection of national resources. The outcome of the probe is expected to provide a clearer picture of the administrative decisions made during the auction period and to establish stronger protocols for the future disposal of state assets.
