Mobile money vendors appeal to police to beef up personnel visibility in Berekum

Date:

Mobile money vendors in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region on Tuesday, called on the police to beef up personnel visibility in the Berekum Township.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), they said the call was being made in the wake of recurring armed robbery attacks on their economic activities, which often led them to conduct their operations in fear and anxiety.

Mr Stephen Baah, a mobile money vendor in the town, said “We are now vulnerable due to the persistent attacks on some of our colleagues,” and called for police protection.

He said due to the brisk economic activities in the Berekum Municipality, traders and buyers as well as many people thronged the township, especially on Thursdays, being the market days to transact various kinds to businesses.

Mr Baah indicated that the mobile money vendors’ contributions to economic development remained enormous due to the growing trend of their activities, hence the need for the police to also protect them as well.

Another mobile money vendor, Ms Linda Attaa, also expressed similar sentiments, worrying that it was difficult for them to identify criminals who transacted businesses with them, saying “some of the people just come to spy on our activities in the pretext to transact business and later launch their attacks”.

They appealed to the Ghana Police Service to treat their plea with urgency to help save lives and their businesses.
