Teach children how to handle face masks

Date:

The Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate on Tuesday urged parents and teachers in the Metropolis to teach children the proper way of wearing and disposal of the face masks.

The Ghana News Agency at Tema has observed during a reconnaissance mission to most schools that children in the Metropolis often removed their masks or put them under their chin some on their school compound and others returning home from school dropped it along the streets.

Meanwhile Mr. Samuel Atuahene Antwi, Tema Metropolitan Nutritionist speaking to mothers during the 2021 annual Child Health Promotion week at Kpotame a suburb of Tema Manhean said it was worrying to see the way some children and pupils handled their face masks.

Mr Atuahene Antwi said apart from ensuring that children wore their face masks correctly, parents must also provide extra ones for their wards saying they often see children with dirty masks.

“The last time, I saw a child picked face masks from the floor, put it in his school bag and sent it home, let’s teach our children the consequences of doing so to avoid exposing them to sicknesses”, he added.

Talking on the COVID-19 vaccination, he entreated those who had their first jab to go for their second dose before the exercise ends giving the assurance that the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has approved the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Ghana.

He also encouraged the public to seek authentic information on the pandemic as well as the vaccine to avoid creating fear and being gullible to false information.

“All the needed information about the COVID-19 pandemic can be found on the Ghana Health Service website, ignore the fake news and get credible ones about the vaccine from there”, he added.

He added that those who had their two doses of the vaccine must continue to adhere to the laid down protocols as Ghana was yet to achieve the needed herd immunity.

He also called on the public to continue to practice hand washing, social distancing, use of sanitizers, wearing of nose mask and other hygienic procedures.
