The future National Democratic Congress administration will conduct another SIM re-registration procedure, according to the minority in parliament.
This is in reaction to the present administration’s attempt to re-register SIM cards, which was launched on October 1, 2021, with the goal of preventing fraud and keeping track of those who are engaging in illegal activity using their phones.
Ghanaians were told to re-register their SIM cards using their Ghana Cards as part of the present campaign. Individuals who disobeyed the order had their SIM cards deleted on May 31, 2023, the last day to do so.
Samuel Nartey George, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee of Parliament, voiced his concerns about the current re-registration procedure and emphasised the NDC government’s intention to carry out a thorough SIM re-registration exercise in the future during a media briefing in Parliament.
Because of the Ghana Card’s inherent flaws, it is untrue that they are utilising it to fight crime. Due to this, we have given notice that the following NDC government would properly re-register SIM cards without requiring you to travel to a telecom office and wait in queue, as we will instead do.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the minister of communications and digitalization, has revealed that mobile network operators (MNOs) and the Bank of Ghana are collaborating to make it easier for people to get their money back from mobile money accounts.
Several users have expressed their concerns about not being able to access their mobile money accounts’ cash after their SIM cards were disabled due to failure to re-register them.
Providing an update on the status of the SIM re-registration exercise in Parliament on Thursday, June 8, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful assured affected subscribers that, while they won’t be able to conduct mobile-related transactions with their deactivated SIMs, their funds will be recovered through the necessary processes.
“We continue to encourage the National Identification Authority (NIA) to assist people to acquire their Ghana Card. We have also been made aware of the difficulties facing subscribers in accessing their funds on their mobile money wallets”.
