Traders flout social distancing directive at Nkurakan market

Date:

Hundreds of traders and customers were seen going about their normal business at the Nkurakan market in the Yilo Krobo Municipality irrespective of government’s directives to observe social distancing.

The directive forms part of government’s measures to control the spread of the coronavirus among the citizens at social gatherings.

This came to light when the Ghana News Agency visited the market to see if sitting arrangements had changed because of the directives.

Almost all the people at the market were not wearing nose masks.

The Nkurakan market is one of the most vibrant markets in the municipality due to its closeness to Koforidua and attracts a lot of traders and customers from Tema, Somanya, Asesewa and surrounding villages and communities.

Most of the traders who spoke to the GNA on anonymity said they were aware of the virus in the system through television and radio stations.

They complained that, they could not stay in their homes because they needed to sell some farm produce and items in order to survive.

Some called on government to supply the citizenry with free nose and mouth masks to reduce the spread of the virus.
