Vandals Hack Electric Pylons

Date:

Minister for Energy, John Peter Amewu, has warned that persons who will attempt to ‘sabotage’ the government’s efforts to improve the lives of Ghanaians will be severely dealt with.

He gave the warning yesterday after some unscrupulous persons destroyed some pylons near the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) head office in Tema.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the hacking of the pylons which transmit electrical power from Karpower and AKSA to the national grid.

When the minister visited the scene yesterday, it became evident that a hacksaw was used by the people to cut bolts and nuts of double and single circuit pylons belonging to the power company after applying some chemicals on them.

One of the pylons fell as a result while another was in a deplorable condition.

Mr. Amewu described the act as “a clear case of sabotage,” adding that investigation had been launched into the incident to unravel the miscreants behind it to face the law.

“It baffles my mind how human beings can do this to our motherland. A political party that will have any element of association with this does not deserve to be in this country. It is obvious that this is a clear case of sabotage,” he fumed.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GRIDCo, Jonathan Amoako-Baah, the ‘criminal operation’ was undertaken at midnight but the control room detected the incident on Monday morning after the monitoring of the lines.

The damaged lines, he noted, would be fixed immediately to ensure stable supply of power.

The CEO further stressed that patrol in the area would be intensified to prevent such incidents.

Exhibits such as hacksaw, spanner, bolts and nuts were found at the crime scene.

Some residents and companies are likely to experience power outages as a result of the destruction of the pylons.
