Heightened Police Presence at Ayawaso North After Looting Incident

The police have increased their presence at the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly following a looting incident by some angry youth.

A widely shared video on social media showed a group of individuals looting items such as refrigerators and other electrical appliances from the assembly.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) arrived at the assembly, around ten police officers were stationed at the premises.

The assembly building was largely deserted, with only the police and a few staff members present.

In connection with the ongoing investigations into the looting and property damage across the country, the police have arrested 18 more individuals.

In total, 80 suspects have been apprehended in relation to the looting incidents.

The police have assured the public that, in collaboration with other security agencies, they have implemented additional measures to prevent further looting incidents nationwide.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, a staff member of the assembly, who requested anonymity, revealed that the looted items included chest freezers, refrigerators, sewing machines, and other items intended for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

He explained that the items were typically distributed to PWDs by the social welfare unit of the assembly.

The staff member also mentioned that the social welfare unit’s door had been forcibly broken by the looters, a detail reflected in the viral video.

He expressed hope that the police would thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice because the stolen items were meant for the most vulnerable members of society.

Wa Township indifferent after declaration of presidential results

The usual euphoria that characterises the announcement of presidential election results was missing in the Wa township after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Mr John Mahama as the president-elect.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited some major streets in Wa shortly after the announcement, it observed that normal business was ongoing.

Not much could be seen on the streets from Kambali to the Wa main traffic through to the Police station, which normally saw motor riders displaying their skills after the declaration of presidential results.

However, small crowds were spotted celebrating at the Wa Central Constituency Office of the NDC along the Zongo lane.

Mr Abdul Rahaman, a resident of Wa, told the GNA that he was happy about the peaceful elections and prayed that God should guide Mr Mahama to rule Ghana successfully.

“Anyone who wins the election is the one Ghanaians voted for. That means it is John Mahama that we all have chosen to be our president,” he said.

“For us in the Upper West Region our prayers and hopes are that the president-elect will rehabilitate the Wa-Bole-Bamboi-Techiman road for us,” Mr Rafiq Ahmed, another resident, said.

Looted items from Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly meant for persons with disability

The electrical appliances and other items looted from the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly are part of the Assembly’s welfare scheme to assist persons with disabilities to be productive.

The items included chest fridges, deep freezers, and sewing machines, an official of the Assembly, who pleaded anonymity, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview, on Monday.

The looters broke into programme office on Sunday, while it was unmanned.

The incident was partially captured in a video that has since gone viral.

A number of persons, including women, were seen in the video carrying different items away, amid commentary that they were intended give- aways to political allies.

The official appealed to the Police to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book shortly.

When the GNA visited the office on Monday morning, there were some police officers on guard there.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Police in a media release announced that some 80 persons had been arrested in connection with looting and incidents of causing harm and damage to properties in various parts of the country.

The release said in collaboration with other security agencies, they had instituted additional measures to contain looting incidents across the country. 

John Mahama wins 9th Presidential Election in Fourth Republic

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Mr John Dramani Mahama as the President-elect of Ghana, having won 56.5 per cent of the total valid votes cast

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is making a comeback after serving a four-year first term from 2012 to 2016.

Making the declaration in Accra, Mrs Jean Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and Returning Officer of the presidential election, said Mr Mahama polled 6,328,397 – representing 56.55 per cent of the total valid votes cast in 267 out of 276 constituencies.

His closest contender, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 4, 657, 304 -representing 41.61 per cent of the votes cast in the 267 constituencies.

“We have not been able to receive results from nine constituencies because our offices have been besieged by political party supporters, making it impossible to complete the collation process,” she said.

“If all the votes from those constituencies were added to the candidate who placed second, it would not change the outcome of the election,” the EC Chairperson added.

The commission, she said, would update the records on receipt of the presidential results from those outstanding constituencies.

“We have conducted elections that are fair, free, credible, transparent, peaceful, and that whose outcomes are acceptable by all.

“The testimonies on Election Day also attest to the efficient, robust and resilient processes we put in place,” she said.

Brief Biography

John Dramani Mahama, a politician and author, began his political career as a Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi (1996–2004).

He served as Deputy Communications Minister (1997–1998) and Minister of Communications (1998–2001) under President Jerry Rawlings, and later became the Minority Spokesperson for Communications (2001–2005) and Foreign Affairs (2005–2008).

In 2008, he became Vice President under John Evans Atta Mills, ascending to the presidency in 2012 after the President’s death. He was elected President later that year but lost re-election bid in 2016.

Mahama was born to a political father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, and educated at Achimota School, Ghana Secondary School, and the University of Ghana, where he earned degrees in History and Communication Studies. He also studied Social Psychology in Moscow.

Before politics, Mahama worked at the Japanese Embassy and Plan International. He is the author of My First Coup d’État and other essays, and is married to Lordina Mahama.

In an interview after the declaration, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections, NDC, welcomed the results and described the Party’s victory as “very great “.

He thanked members of the Party and their agents for their “vigilance” to ensure that the “will of the people” prevailed.

Mr Evans Nimako, Director of Elections, NPP, for his part, said the Party respected the decisions of Ghanaians as expressed in the election results.

He condemned the attacks on some offices of the EC and appealed to the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Alhaji Haruna retains Wenchi constituency parliamentary seat for NDC.

Mr Alhaji Seidu Haruna, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wenchi constituency in the Bono Region retained the seat for the party in the parliamentary elections. 
 
He polled 26,549 votes to beat his two challengers, Mr Kojo Frempong, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate who had 20,942 votes, and Mr David Kusi, an Independent Candidate who secured 191 votes, as contained in the Electoral Commission (EC)’s certified results on the parliamentary elections. 

President Akufo-Addo congratulates President-elect John Mahama; promises seamless transfer of power

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated John Dramani Mahama, the President-elect in the December 07 presidential election.

He expressed his commitment to ensure a seamless transfer of power on January 07, 2025, in accordance with the country’s constitution.

“Further to this evening’s official declaration by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, of the results of the 2024 Presidential Election, the President has called Mr Mahama to congratulate him on his decisive victory in the just-ended election,” a statement issued by the Communications Directorate, Office of the President, noted.

The statement also commended the EC and Ghanaians in general for a successful election.

It said the polls reflected the enduring strength of Ghana’s democracy, urging the citizenry to unite and work together to consolidate the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the President-elect, in his victory speech, stated that President Akufo-Addo had called to congratulate him.

They had agreed to put together a Joint Presidential Transition Team by Wednesday, December 11.

Yaw Ahenkwah retains NDC parliamentary seat in Jaman North.

Mr Frederick Yaw Ahenkwah, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliamentary retained the Jaman North constituency seat of the Bono Region, securing 21,134 votes in the parliamentary elections. 
 
His closest rival, Mr Enoch Nyarko, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Parliamentary Candidate (PC) had 15,316 votes, with Mr Martin Kwame Antwi, an Independent PC securing 181 votes. 
 
Mr Enoch Kwaku Adoglo, the Jaman North Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission who declared the results said the NDC’s flagbearer, the former President John Dramani Mahama also obtained 22,622 votes with NPP’s Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia securing 12,837 votes in the presidential ballot too. 
 
In his victory speech, Mr Ahenkwah expressed gratitude to his followers, NDC supporters and all the electorates for the confidence reposed in him once again and promised to work hard to bring the development of the constituency to the next level. 

NDC cautions supporters against lawlessness, vandalising state properties.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cautioned supporters against lawlessness, as the party celebrates its Election 2024 victory. 
 
Mr Kofi Okantoa, the Patron of the Bono East Constituency branch of the NDC who gave the caution said the party would not be in the position to defend any supporters who would be arrested by the police. 
 
Speaking in an interview with the media in Sunyani, he urged the supporters to cease from raiding government institutions and vandalising state properties and advised them to remain calm. 
 
Mr Okantoa said with the political victory of John Dramani Mahama as the President-elect, there was the need for the party supporters to focus on ensuring a smooth transition of political power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the NDC on January 7, 2025. 
 
He said calm and restraint remained crucial in maintaining and strengthening the prevailing peace of the country, as the nation prepared for the transition of political power. 
 
Mr Okantoa assured the party executives that they would meet with the supporters to address emerging concerns.

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians of his determination to building the Ghana everyone yearns for.

“We are determined to working together with you to build the Ghana we want, and I am certain that we shall win the battle,” he said.

Mr Mahama said this in his victory speech Monday night at his Cantonment Office in Accra, few hours after the Electoral Commission had declared him winner of the December 7 Presidential Election.

“We intend to work together to restore the shattered confidence in our politics and governance system”.

He reiterated the opportunity for a new beginning that the election and its outcome represented, which would write a new chapter of the collective story for Ghanaians.

“We need to consciously set the tone for the new direction in which we will be travelling,” the President-elect said.

“I want those words, my brothers and sisters, to be a reminder to all of you, a reminder to me and to every individual who has just been elected or re-elected that no matter what office you hold, no matter what your political affiliation is or has been in the past, the one thing we share in common is the nation Ghana,” he said.

“We want a much better Ghana…a Ghana that works for everybody and not just a few people. We want a Ghana that considers the well-being of all its citizens and affords them each the ability to live a life of dignity, a life of limitless opportunity”.

Mr Mahama said from the head porter (kayayo) to the managing director, to the market women, the bankers, the teachers, security personnel, nurses, doctors, the pastors, the drivers, the tailors and seamstresses, they were all essential to the functioning and forward motion of the country.

“Ghanaians, the people of this soil, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, are in fact the nation’s greatest resource.”

“This country, this land, is not for one person or for one family or for one tribe or ethnic group. This country, this beautiful, resilient and resource-rich country that we so love, Ghana, is for all of us.”

“This is our home, but it is not enough to just be born here and to die here. We must also to be able to live here with satisfaction.”

The Ghanaian must be able to love, to dream, to laugh, to eat and dance and drum and share all aspects of his or her culture handed over by the ancestors, the President-elect added.

He noted that his administration would create sustainable and well-paying jobs through the 24-hour economy initiative.

“The most basic needs of Ghanaians such as affordable housing and health care, food and clean water, safe work and fair wages must be met.”

NDC parliamentary candidate snatches Tarkwa Nsuaem seat.

Mr Issah Salifu Taylor, a 56-year-old miner, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, has won the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency seat.

He snatched the seat from Mr George Mireku Duker, the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament. 

Mr Taylor, a first timer, surprisingly secured 35,820 votes, out of the total valid votes of 76,189, to defeat his main contender, Mr Duker. 

The current Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, unfortunately lost the seat with 27, 474 votes. 

Miss Joy Jocelyn Andoh, an independent candidate, obtained 12,795 votes. The total rejected ballots recorded was 609.

Addressing hundreds of party sympathizers, who were jubilating at the forecourt of the Tarkwa Community Centre, where the collation took place, Mr Taylor commended all NDC members and leadership and supporters for traveling from far and near to exercise their democratic right. 

The newly elected MP commended his constituents for the opportunity to serve them, and promised to work with all stakeholders to address the pressing needs and concerns of the area. 

Mr Duker, on his part, had earlier told the Ghana News Agency that he had worked so hard to transform the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency and had strong hopes of retaining his seat for the third consecutive time.
