Commodity Exchange Introduces Soya Bean Trade

0

The Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) has launched a new commodity, soybean, onto its market.

Speaking at the launch on Tuesday in Accra, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GCX, Kadri Alfah, said the move was aimed at helping farmers to produce quality soybean in large quantities, negotiate for good prices, as well as link them to buyers at convenient locations.

He also hinted that GCX had agreed with nine Ghanaian commercial banks to grant short-term loans to farmers to enable them meet their immediate working capital needs using their harvested and deposited commodities in GCX warehouses as collateral.

Mr. Alfah disclosed that the introduction of soyabean showed that the trade in corn had been successful in the first five months, as it recorded the sale of over 10,000 mini-bags of corn.

“Soybean has been in Ghana since 1970 and Ghana produces about 30,000 metric tons per year as the demand for the commodity is growing, particularly in edible oils, flour, milk and the  animal feed industry,” he added.

According to him, GCX would include rice, sorghum and cashew because they are very high value commercial crops that would benefit farmers and the country as a whole.

GCX is expected to trade soya bean contracts for future delivery within the next 12 months.

The CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab, in an address, stated that commodities exchanges are critical drivers for economic development and transformation through the promotion of the commercialisation of the country’s agricultural sector, improvement in market efficiency and accessibility and lowering transaction cost.

Mr. Hanan reiterated that NAFCO would continue to support GCX to executive its mandate of connecting farmers and providing opportunities for brokers and other stakeholders to derive the maximum benefits from commodity exchange trading.

He also called on all GCX partners to help the exchange achieve its aim to transform Ghana’s economy through agriculture.

I’ll Scrap Luxury Vehicle Tax In My Second Coming – Mahama

0

Former President John Mahama says should be reelected as President of Ghana in 2020, his new administration would abolish the luxury vehicle tax introduced by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP’s) Government.

He said this while speaking to the commercial driver on Thursday in Accra as part of his pre-easter walkabout.

He described the levy as an ill-conceived one and noted that its introduction has overburdened the ordinary commercial driver whose vehicle possesses the white number plate.

Mr. Mahama argued that the amount of revenue raised so far was not even enough for the tax to be sustained.

According to him, “not too long ago, the government introduced the luxury vehicle tax. This tax was not well thought through before it was rolled out.”

He added that “they should have exempted all commercial vehicles. There are commercial vehicles without the yellow plates, but rather white plates yet they carry commercial goods. Once they exceed three litres, they are charged this luxury tax. This has brought untold hardship on some of the drivers especially those who work for the companies and others. ”

Government has so far reportedly collected an amount of GH¢21.3 million in taxes from the use of vehicles with engine capacities of 2.9 litres and above between August and December last year.

It was only God who could have saved us!

0

On Saturday 19th January at about 5 am, my dad and I set off for Kasoa.

When he started the car, we were contemplating on whether to use the Spintex road or the beach road(37).
He decided to use the 37road.

So we drove and hit the 37 roads.

Then right in front of the SIS, it looked as though there was a cupboard and it seemed scattered probably because the car before us didn’t see it.

So daddy swerved it and we kept moving but there was a truck behind us that didn’t seem to notice the obstacle so not so long after we bypassed the obstacle, we felt a strong “bang” at the car boot and daddy lost control..then we felt another hit and daddy made a right turn and we went into a nearby filling station..the truck followed us there but thankfully not directly behind us. The back of the car was totally damaged and the workers at the station were looking at us with shock..asking if we were the ones in the car.

I stepped out and tears rolled down my cheeks because I knew The Hand of God was present!

Almost everything in the boot was destroyed. The car was left in scraps.

At this time the truck had also finally stooped because according to the driver his breaks failed.

It was only God who could have saved us!

Then I remembered Bishop’s prayers for us on the 31st night into the new year! “In January, you will not die!!”

Ghanaians Must Stop Aiding Foreign Galamseyers – Chinese Envoy

0

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Shi Ting Wang, has said to end illegal mining activities in Ghana. Ghanaians must first stop aiding foreigners, especially Chinese involved in galamsey.

According to the Ambassador, although China’s Government acknowledged that there were some Chinese nationals engaged in galamsey in Ghana, they were undoubtedly being assisted by Ghanaians to perpetuate the crime.

He was speaking at a lecture held at the Confucius Institute, University of Cape Coast recently.

The Ambassador pointed out that “we don’t know where your gold is. We don’t issue visas too for the Chinese people coming to Ghana. Ghanaians issue the visas. Ghanaians aid the Chinese to where they can find your gold. Why are Chinese not doing illegal mining in South Africa where there is also a lot of gold…because they cannot do that there and the locals don’t support such illegalities.”

However, He assured the Ghanaian Government that China would help to urgently repatriate any Chinese found to have been engaged in illegal mining popularly called galamsey.

Hundreds of Chinese have been arrested across Ghana for alleged illegal gold mining activities.

Several of them have faced prosecution but several others continue to troop Ghana to engage in the lucratcriminal act.

DVLA To Seize Buses Without Emergency Exit

0

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has asked drivers and owners of commercial buses with one door and operating in the Upper East Region to create emergency exit routes for their vehicles.

According to the Authority, the directive must be complied with by the end of May 2019.

The Upper East Regional Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Abdulai Mutawakilu made the announcement at a meeting with the leadership of GPRTU, the Road Safety Commission and other stakeholders in Bolgatanga, as part of activities towards the search for ways to ensure maximum protection of passengers.

Many of the long commercial buses operating in the Upper East Region have one door which serves as entrance and exit for all passengers, and in the event of an accident passengers on board have had to struggle through the single door and the broken glasses in the windows.

According to Mr. Mutawakilu, this situation puts the lives of passengers in danger and increases the rate of fatalities in the event of an accident.

“We are meeting the leaders of the drivers and car owners, we will do more education on the need for the long buses to have two doors. It can be done and we expect all commercial buses to have two doors as the law prescribes,” he said.

“We have been monitoring these buses leaving Bolgatanga and entering Bolgatanga and many of them do not have emergency exits. We wanted to know if the buses travel with two drivers or not and we realized that many of the buses had one driver. It is clear that if we don’t enforce the law, people by themselves will not comply,” he added.

According to the DVLA Regional Director, there is a law in Ghana that mandates all long commercial buses to have a main door for entrance and exit and then an emergency door to aid easy escape in the event of an accident.

Surprisingly, all buses operating in the region have all been duly registered and have been declared road worthy by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority even though they do not have the required emergency exit doors.

Reacting to this situation, the DVLA said in the past some considerations were given, adding, “… it was a mistake that was done in the past, we have decided not to repeat that this year and the coming years.”

FERVENT PRAYERS GO UP AT THE INDEPENDENCE SQUARE

0

With hands lifted and voices raised, prophetic, heartfelt prayers went up from the Independence Square on Good Friday.

The prayers were led passionately by the Prophet Dag Heward-mills, expounding on each prayer topic.
Prayers went up for favour.

Prayers went up for the fulfillment of dreams and visions.

The masses also prayed for dominion, against resistance, retardation and to overcome temptation.

Again the Prophet stirred up the people to pray against the spirit of death and against strange diseases.

The prayers were rounded up with prayers for fruitfulness – to increase in the things of God (winning souls, working for God and building churches).

What better way to mark this eventful day!

0

President Nana Akufo-Addo has appealed to the Christian Community to pray for the progress of Ghana as they celebrate this year’s Easter.

In his Easter Message delivered from the Jubilee House to the nation, the President stated that “as we celebrate Easter, let us drive carefully on our roads and keep our nation in our prayers.”

According to him, “with the mobilization of our energies and prayers, I am confident that we will move this nation where she ought to be – Ghana Beyond Aid.”

The President indicated that over the last two years of his administration, Ghana had made significant socioeconomic gains.

He stated that thousands of graduate teachers and nurses who prior to his coming to office where the unemployed, have successfully been employed by his administration.

Mr. Akufo-Addo noted that Ghana has risen to become the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in West Africa.

Through several innovative agricultural initiatives such as the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), he said the country was now exporting food to other West African nations, adding that the sacrifices made by his administration over the last two years were beginning to bear fruits.

He added that “we are making steady progress in the implementation of our One District One Factory Project.”

However, the President admitted that “there are many more hurdles ahead to overcome if we are to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of our forebears who envisage our nation to be that shining star of Africa where the personal security of each citizen is guaranteed.”

Stressing the need to pray for the nation’s prosperity this Easter, the President indicated that “Holy scripture says if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heavens and I will forgive their sins and heal their land.”

He noted that “Easter is the most significant celebration for Christians.”

Chelsea, Arsenal Into Europa Semis

0

Two English Premier League clubs, Arsenal and Chelsea, have made it to the semifinals round of the UEFA Europa League.

Arsenal won 1-0 away from home at Napoli, progressing to the semifinals on a 3-0 aggregate.

Chelsea qualified on a 5-3 aggregate after winning home 4-3 to Slavia Prague.

The Gunners are to face Spanish La Liga side, FC Valencia while the Blues would take on Eintracht Frankfurt.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have a slimmer chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League through the Premiership as they keep falling from the top four spots on the league table.

That means one of them has to win the Europa title at all cost to be sure of next season’s Champions League qualification.

Rural Banks Build Capacity In Fraud Prevention

0

The Association of Rural Banks (ARB) has organized a four-day capacity building workshop on risk management and fraud prevention for the staff of selected rural and community banks (RCBs) drawn from across the country in Kasoa in the Central Region.

About 40 participants in managerial functions in various fields of operation including audit, human resources and IT were empowered on sound risk management practices and how to handle the threat of fraud in their respective institutions.

The training programme was held in collaboration Microfin Consult and RIMCS Consult—a consortium of microfinance and risk management experts—and with funding from the German development agency, GIZ.

National President of the ARB, Daniel OheneKwekuOwusu, in his opening remarks, indicated that the training programme was timely and appropriate considering recent happenings within the country’s financial landscape and underscored the need for RCBs to build capacity in the areas of fraud prevention and guarding against the risks of cybersecurity.

He said the increasing reliance on information communications technology in the banking business calls for adequate security protection arrangements that will enable RCBs to mitigate the risks of fraud and other malfeasances within the financial space.

“It is pertinent for businesses and institutions, in this case RCBs, to remain abreast with the ever-changing technology, both in machinery, procedures, and processes, to remain effective and efficient so as to cut costs, increase productivity and enhance profitability,” he indicated.

Mr. Owusu averred that poor risk management practices that have given rise to outrageous insider dealings and other inordinate investment schemes within the universal banking space have taken a huge toll on the operations of RCBs, especially in the areas of deposit mobilization and loan recoveries.

He added: “We expect this training to equip participants with basic understanding of risk and fraud associated with the banking business to enable them develop appropriate measures to mitigate any underlying undesirable consequences in a strategic manner.”

One of the facilitators for the training programme, Ishmael KwesiOtchere, told the B&FT in an interview that it was prudent for RCBs to deploy efficient risk management and fraud prevention mechanisms in their operations since banking is all about managing assets and liabilities efficiently.

“The changing trends in the banking sector, specifically the rural banking business, requires RCBs to reposition to better meet the needs of the industry considering the fact that they are custodians of people’s deposits,” he said.

He added: “This training programme will strengthen the capacity of managers of RCBs in their control and management of fraudulent practices in their respective banks.”

Cynthia Odonkor, GIZ’s Technical Adviser, Financial Systems Development (FSD) of the Programme for Sustainable Economic Development (PSED), indicated in her remarks that the four-day training will empower participants to be proactive to happenings in the financial sector and to put in place relevant structures to operate efficiently.

“We expect participants to practicalise what they have learned in their various institutions and ensure they have in place the necessary structure to avoid the collapse of their banks,” she noted.
