Nana Serwah Brakatuo, the Abakomahemaa of Abetifi-Kwahu, has urged citizens to avoid statements that could cause violence before, during and after the 2024 General Election.
“As we move into this important political season, I urge each of us to reflect on the power of words.
“Words can build bridges of understanding and cooperation, but they can also destroy the very fabric of our society,” she said on Tuesday during a seminar in Accra.
“Hate speech, in any form, is a poison that can divide communities, incite violence, and erode the democratic values that we all hold dear. Be mindful of your utterances during this political period.
“What you say, and what you share, especially on social media and other public platforms, has a profound impact,”Nana Brakatuoadmonished.
The event was organised by the Centre for African Development and Progress.
It was on the theme “Championing Peaceful Elections 2024: The Role of all Ghanaians.”
Nana Brakatuo encouraged Ghanaians to avoid spreading misinformation and using divisive language that could escalate tensions.
She emphasised the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue, exchanging ideas respectfully, and concentrating on issues that foster unity among citizens.
“We must remember that elections come and go, but the relationships and bonds we share as Ghanaians must endure long after the ballots are cast. Our constitution guarantees us freedom of speech, but with that freedom comes the responsibility to use our words wisely,” she said.
Nana Brakatuo called on political leaders and candidates to promote hope, peace, and progress, rather than hatred and division.
She urged them to lead by example, by showing that political differences don’t have to lead to enmity.
The traditional leader emphasised the need for politicians to guide their supporters toward peaceful and respectful behavior, focusing on pressing issues like healthcare, education, economic growth, and overall development in Ghana.
“Let us make a commitment today to reject hate speech in all its forms, embrace peaceful dialogue and act as ambassadors of unity for our beloved country. Let us work together to ensure that this election season strengthens our democracy, rather thandivide our people,” she said.
Dr. Abubakari Mohammed Marzug, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, stated that the upcoming elections provided a vital opportunity for Ghanaians to reaffirm their commitment to maintaining constitutional order and fostering good governance.
He called on Ghanaians to fully participate in the political process, to ensure their voices are heard whilst fostering a peaceful and democratic society.
“Every political actor, member of every political party, sympathiser, supporter should have one interest, and that is an interest of peace for Ghana.
“We should understand that Ghana will be the winner when at the end of the day we live in peace,” he said.
Dr. Marzug challenged political leaders to put their constituents first rather than enforcing authority over them.
He called on voters to educate themselves on their democratic rights and responsibilities, stressing the significance of holding politicians accountable.
However, he urged such calls for accountability be made fairly and without insulting.
Mr. Jeff T. Kavianu, former MP for Upper Manya Krobo, asked political leaders to prioritize the welfare of their communities by implementing initiatives and projects that benefit everyone.
He also advised Ghanaians to make voting decisions based on viable policies rather than monetary influence, encouraging a focus on long-term community interests.
“We can now decide as citizens that enough is enough. If a politician misbehaves and refuses to do the right thing, let us punish him for it.
“Next time if you don’t perform and bring money, we’ll punish you. With that, politicians will begin to realise that they cannot take citizens for granted anymore,” he said.
He urged the media to leverage their platforms to promote healthy discourse that encourages peace and unity in Ghana
