Do not let partisan politics be a source of tension in Effutu–NCCE

Mr Robert Ekow Ewur, the Central Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has admonished the people of Effutu Constituency not to allow the quest for political power to breed tension in the area.

He said it was an indisputable fact that the current political climate prevailing in Effutu was divisive and the differences, disunity among families and friends must give way to cohesion, harmony, and tranquility.

Mr Ewur gave the advice during a sensitisation drive by Effutu Directorate of the Commission at Eyipey and Akousa communities in Winneba.

The meeting was under the theme; “Get involve ensuring peace before during and after the 2024 general election.”

It was sponsored by Mr Alexander Ato Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for the constituency.

The Regional Director indicated that the political temperature of Effutu in recent times had been rising gradually but called for mutual respect and decorum in the activities of political parties during political campaigns to forestall any mayhem ahead of the elections in December and after.

The Commission said the activities of individuals and political parties must be devoid of acts that could impact negatively on the peace Effutu and the country was enjoying.

He said as the Commission was preaching for peace across the country, there was the need for all, particularly the youth to be ambassadors of peace, reject persons who would incite them to   cause chaos or violence.

“We have only one Effutu let see ourselves as one people for development and not to allow partisan politics to divide us, he added.

Mr Bosson-Amedenu Sena, Effutu Municipal Director of the Commission, said the sensitisation drive was to ensure continuous peace to prevailed in the country before, during and after the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

He urged the people not to allow anyone to influence them with monies and other items to destabilise the peace.

Mr Kofi Kum, Assembly man for Effutu Eyipey electoral area urged the residents to be ambassadors of peace and not indulge in acts which were unproductive.  

“We must see ourselves as one people, tolerate each other and   stop in-fighting because of politics.

Minority demands statement from President on country’s environment

The Minority Caucus in Parliament, is demanding a statement from President Akufo-Addo on the state of the country’s environment immediately, saying it is critical to our survival as a nation.

According to the minority the government over the years had not shown any transparency in its handling of state resources and protection of the environment.

Alhaji Alhassan Suhiyini, a Member of the Lands and Natural Resources Committee of parliament was speaking at a press conference to set straight some records, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) misrepresented during his last press briefing at the Ministry of Information on 14th August 2024.

He said Mr Jinapor in the last couple of months had at every opportunity addressed the media on a number of issues involving the inaction or complicity of the ministry or its agencies.

He said the minister by words and deeds seem to be more interested in using the state power to further the interests of some privileged individuals and select businesses than to safeguard public interests and property.       

Alhaji Suhiyini also assured that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC)government will investigate the questionable sales and acquisition of state lands under the Akufo-Addo led administration.

He stated that the NDC shall retrieve all stolen state lands and hold responsible the kingpins in the illegal mining operations in the country’s forest.

“President Mahama has indicated that under his presidency, the NDC will operationalize the ‘Operation Recover All Loot’ aimed at recovering all stolen assets of our dear country” he said.

Alhaji Suhiyini also insisted that the NDC should continue to expose and bring public attention to the capture of state assets by the current regime in order to make it an expensive endeavour for them to carry through their corrupt agenda.

He cited instances like the Bulgarian Embassy land saga, the Parks and Gardens land at Cantonments, the Judicial Service bungalow issue, and the Northern Regional Lands Commission reversal of several leases over public lands granted to private developers.

He mentioned other cases such as the issues of handing over land to pre-acquisition owners, the administration of land and digitization of land records, the pollution of water bodies by illegal mining activities, among others.

Alhaji Suhiyini further called on the President to dismiss the ministers for Science and Environment and Lands and Natural Resources (LNR) to signal their disappointment and the indignation of the people.

He said anything short of that will mean their suspicions that galamsay is a regime sponsored and supported rape of the state is true.

Ghanaian Inmates to compete in fourth Intercontinental Online Chess Championship

Inmates of the Senior Correctional Centre in Accra have began preparations to represent Ghana at the fourth Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners.

The championship, scheduled for 8th to 10th October,2024 would see team Ghana, make a return after an impressive performance last year, finishing third on the ranking table.
 The competition is part of the Chess for Freedom Program, an initiative by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) aimed at using the sport for education and social inclusion in prisons worldwide.

Under the leadership of Mr. David Acheampong, founder of the Mentors Chess Academy, the inmates have been diligently equipped with the needed skills for the competition. 

This year, the team is confident of excelling at the global stage with hopes of bringing national pride to Ghana.  

The chess program had been crucial in their rehabilitation, offering intellectual stimulation and personal growth. 

Participation in this global competition provides inmates with a platform to display their skills and inspire both peers and the broader public.

 Mentors Chess Academy is actively seeking partners to support and expand the chess initiative to other prisons across Ghana. 

This program highlights the transformative potential, teaching patience, strategic thinking, and the consequences of actions, thereby aiding inmates’ reintegration into society and enhancing their future prospects.

Four Ghanaian officials begin VAR course in Ivory Coast

Four Ghanaian officials are currently participating in a pioneering Video Assistant Referee (VAR) course organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Abidjan, Cote D’ Ivoire.

The course marked a significant milestone as CAF’s inaugural VAR training session organized for zones, with the WAFU B zone leading the way.

Participants of the training were Rita Ama Nkansah Boateng, Julian Nii Akwa Nunoo, Emmanuella Aglago and Alex Kotey. 

The training also aimed at enhancing the quality of refereeing in the region by equipping officials with the latest VAR techniques and practices. 

It also underscored the GFA’s commitment to advancing football officiating standards and highlights the country’s active role in shaping the future of African football.

As the WAFU B zone pioneers this essential training, it sets a precedent for other zones to follow, ensuring a more consistent and reliable officiating framework across CAF competitions.

Tain NCCE inaugurates Inter-Party Dialogue Committee

The Tain District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has inaugurated the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) as part of proactive measures to foster peaceful elections and ensure political stability as the country prepares for the 2024 General Election.  

The stakeholder engagement committee will provide platform for dialogue and the use of different strategies to detect early symptoms of election-related violence to device appropriate strategy to curtail its manifestation and further escalation.  

The inaugural ceremony brought together all political actors, the clergy, imams, security personnel, traditional authority, youth groupings, the media as well as Persons With Disability. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Peter K. Gyasi, Deputy Bono Regional Director, NCCE , called on Ghanaians to eschew any act of violence before, during and after the elections. 

He cautioned the electorate to be wary of politicians who would attempt to induce them with money, pointing out that, monetisation in politics would not encourage transparency and integrity.  

He urged the media to be responsible in their reportage and avoid misinformation and disinformation, noting that, false information could undermine the electoral process and lead to violence. 

Mr Osman Seidu, Tain District Director, NCCE, making reference to section (1) of the Public Order Act, said a person who desired to hold a special event in a public place shall notify the police of that intention not less than five days before the date of the event.  

He explained that, special events included holding of processions, parades, carnivals, street dance, celebration of traditional custom, an outdooring of a traditional ruler, demonstrations, and rallies.  

He urged Ghanaians, especially political actors, to adhere to the Public Order Act to ensure peace.  

He cautioned against pulling down of bill boards, tearing and defacing of posters by political opponents.  

Mr Dwumor Ahwireng, Tain District Director, Electoral Commission, assured that the Commission was ready to conduct free and fair elections in December. 

4/14 Movement organises fun day for children

The 4/14 Movements, a global child evangelism movement, has organised a fun and fellowship party for children and the youth in the Tema metropolis to draw them closer to God. 

The non-government Christian organisation is focused on reaching, rescuing, rooting, and releasing children, especially those aged between four and 14, from the world to equip them with the word of God to help them make the right decisions as they grow. 

Reverend Dr. Wan Ki Choi, the global leader for the movement, said children between four and 14 were the core and future of their countries and churches, especially in Africa and Latin American countries, and must be seen as a critical group parent and the church must focus on. 

Rev. Choi expressed the hope that churches in Ghana would collaborate with the movement and channel their focus on the children and youth ministry. 

He advised parents and teachers to put in the best for the children, adding that they could mobilise the young adults to reach the children through the use of concrete and specific strategies. 

Reverend Dr. Sylvanus Elorm Amegashitsi, the Africa Administrator for the movement, stated that the organisation was a network of churches and all parachurch organisations that were involved in the raising of children, discipleship, and making sure that children’s God-given destinies are achieved. 

Rev. Amegashitsi said that the focus of the conference and fun fellowship is to equip the teachers to reach out and teach children using new technologically related platforms, such as social media, to impact their lessons on them. 

He explained that the movement did not belong to one church or organisation but rather to all churches in Ghana, to bring children together to celebrate the Lord and tap into their talents. 

He urged parents to work with the church and children’s service leaders to raise them in the fear of God by spending time with, knowing, and understanding their children’s challenges.  

Pastor Mark Aims, the children’s pastor at the Central Assemblies of God Church, Tema Community 4, noted that children were the future generation of the country; therefore, it is important for them to be listened to, and attention paid to them while preparing them for the future. 

  

He noted that for a child to grow physically, mentally, psychologically, and spiritually, it was crucial for them to be loved equally, listen to, and assisted with their needs so that, in totality, they could grow the way Jesus Christ did. 

Miss Vanessa Afful, children service teacher, appreciated the leaders of the 4/14 movement for their training, saying the fun fellowship had taught all the children the importance of teamwork building through various fun games and love for one another. 

She urged parents to train their children in the way of the Lord so that they did not depart from it as they grow. 

Unknown persons vandalise ECG transformer at Asutuare

Some unknown persons have vandalised and stolen components of a 100KVA, 33/0.433KV transformer located at the Asutuare junction, 

a property of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Tema Region, valued at about GHC75,000. 

The transformer was discovered to have been vandalised on Saturday, August 31, 2024, during a routine patrol to check the network and fix a power outage.  

Mr Michael Buabin, the Tema Regional ECG Engineer, told the Ghana News Agency that the transformer had been brought down, some parts removed and taken away, while other components lay scattered around it. 

Mr Buabin stated that the ECG officials who discovered the incident made a report to the Doryumu Police Station.  

He indicated that the damage to transformers had inconvenienced customers, as some had been without supply due to them. 

He said such acts also affected ECG, as its resources meant for other projects had to be channeled into replacing the stolen transformer. 

“The damaged transformer itself would cost about GHC 75,000, while the associated components needed will likely raise the cost to over GHC 100,000, an amount that could have gone into other developmental projects by the organisation,” he said. 

The regional engineer pleaded with the public to support the ECG by reporting to the police any person seen damaging or offering for sale such items, adding that collaboration from the public could help prevent such occurrences in the future. 

Miss Tourism Ghana host costume and talent night for contestants

The Miss Tourism Ghana pageant, a key component of Ghana’s tourism promotion, held a regional costume and talent night for the 2024 contestants.   

Contestants from various regions took center stage, mesmerizing the audience with traditional acts ranging from energetic dances to melodious tunes and distinctive regional customs. 

Following the regional costume session, the contestants exhibited their talents, ranging from singing and dancing to creative arts and public speaking. The performances showcased their skills and personalities. 

Speaking at the event, Mr. Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, Deputy Director of Domestic Marketing at the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting domestic tourism.   

He said that the Authority’s domestic marketing tourism campaigns, such as “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, and Feel Ghana” and “Experience Ghana, Share Ghana,” had played key roles in boosting domestic tourism over the years. 

Mr. Kusi indicated that the GTA was poised to use the many beauty pageants across the country to educate the public on the importance of domestic tourism in driving the economy in terms of job creation, foreign exchange, national cohesion, and global recognition. 

Mrs. Delphine Brew Hammond, Chief Executive Officer of Miss Tourism Ghana, said that the contenders were ready for the Grand Finale, where they would showcase more of their region’s tradition and culture to promote domestic tourism.  

She said that the pageant’s grand finale would hold on September 20, 2024, at the National Theatre of Ghana, and that anticipation was growing as to who would be named the next Miss Tourism Ghana. 

The contestants include Agbolosu Mawuse Abla, Eastern Region; Emmanuella Owusuaa Wiredu, Volta Region; Adizah Alhassan, Bono Region; Lawrencia Ama Yeboah, Savannah Region; Deborah Dzifa Amezah, Greater Accra Region; Akoto Erica, Ahafo Region; Gloria Kwarteng, Northern Region; Eleanor Ama Seimaa Nimako, Ashanti Region; Portia Mensah, Upper East; and Stephanie Owiredua Kissi, Western Region. 

Political parties sign peace accord in Ada ahead of December polls

Political parties in the Ada Constituency have signed a peace accord as a commitment to adhere to a peaceful campaign towards the upcoming general elections. 

The accord was signed by Mr Arnold Agbasi Gadugah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constituency Secretary, and Mr Ebenezer Tetteh Kpodo, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Gabriel Narh Vortuanu, constituency secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and Madam Sarah Korlekie Afadornugbo, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Party (NDP). 

The peace accord, which was engineered by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ada East, was meant to foster unity among the leadership of the political parties and their followers. 

Madam Faustina Blewusi, the Ada East District Director of the NCCE, said during a stakeholder engagement that even though previous elections held in the constituency were peaceful, it was operative to build on it to ensure an incident-free election this year. 

Superintendent Andreas Kojo Mifetu, the Ada District Police Commander, speaking on security, stated that the security agencies in the area are well prepared to prevent chaos and incidents that might hinder a peaceful electoral process. 

He also reminded the political parties to respect the public order act that required them to notify the police days ahead of any of their public activities. 

Nene Tetteh Kake Peemi I and Mr Kinsley Ahuma Dzetror, respectively the Ada Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ada East Communications Officer, assured the public of their readiness to ensure violence-free elections as well as conduct their campaigns devoid of abusive language. 

Mr Renard Amarteifio, the Ada East District Electoral Officer, assured the political parties of a credible and transparent election, whose outcome will be accepted by all participants. 

Let’s adhere to the principles of peace – NCCE Director

Madam Naana Otoo, the Aowin Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Western North Region, has urged the public to maintain peace and unity during the Election 2024. 

She said it was only through peace and stability that the country would develop and improve the well-being of the citizenry. 

Madam Otoo made the call when the NCCE held an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting to discuss the means to ensure a peaceful environment before, during and after the December 7 polls within the municipality. 

The meeting was attended by political party representatives, security personnel, religious and traditional leaders, and youth groups, among other stakeholders. 

Madam Otoo said the IPDC meeting was part of the NCCE’s mandate to bring together key stakeholders to educate the people to ensure a peaceful and successful elections come December 7. 

She said the committee members were to among other things promote democracy, manage political tensions and promote issue-based election campaigns in the municipality. 

The District Director tasked the members to foster unity among political party candidates and their supporters and other members of the public to enable them to make informed decisions about the election. 

She called for deepened awareness among the electorate against vote buying, misinformation and disinformation, religious intolerance, use of abusive language on campaign platforms by politicians and other acts that could threaten the peaceful conduct of the election.
