McDan Peace and Unity Cup kicks off, Chorkor thrash 10-man Dome Kwabenya 4-0

The fourth edition of the McDan Ga-Adangbe Peace and Unity Cup kicked off at the McDan La Town Park on Saturday as Chorkor recorded a 4-0 victory over Dome Kwabenya. 

After months of putting in much effort to get gingered for the competition, the winners proved to have picked some positives from the last edition. 

Goals from Enoch Aryeetey, Ismael Nortey and Shadrach Neequaye were enough to eliminate Dome Kwabenya from the tournament.

Chorkor began the game on an impressive note to launch an opener courtesy Aryeetey’s third minute header.

The leading side dominated play leaving their opponents who hanged at the back of the 18-yard box to protect their dignity.

An exciting 45 minutes came to a halt after both sides failed to capitalize on their chances. 

It was a second half of humiliation on the path of Dome Kwabenya who thought they were on the verge of equalizing the early goal. 

Aryeetey was right on time in the half of Dome Kwabenya to add to the woes of their opponents with an easy finish in the 48th minute. 

Chants from the fans gave a signal of how eager they were to win the title and earn the bragging rights this time round. 

Dome Kwabenya’s joy was tempered by a red card on midfielder, Adams following a dangerous tackle. 

Ismael Nortey and Shadrach Neequaye could not wait to get their names on the scoresheet as they stole the show in the final minutes with a goal each. 

At the end of the 90 minutes, Ismael Nortey was adjudged man of the match. 

Mr. Jonathan Akrong, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the McDan Ga-Adangbe Peace and Unity Cup in an interview with the GNA Sports commended the performances of both teams who exhibited much discipline throughout the game. 

“The two teams comported themselves very well, before, during and after. Football is the tool we are using to promote peace and unity that is already existing in the Ga community,” he said. 

He thanked Mr. Daniel McKorley, Group Chairman of the McDan Group for the vision to organize the tournament. 

Mr. Akrong congratulated the team from Chorkor and urged them to put in more effort as they target the coveted trophy. 

The McDan Peace and Unity Cup, organized every election year, seeks to promote peace and unity among communities. 

The tournament, expected to run from July to November will award winners with a GHÇ10,000 cash prize, a trophy and medals, whiles the first and second runner-up will also receive GH¢5,000 and GH$3,000 respectively with trophies and medals.

GRA Board congratulates  management, staff for exceeding 2024 mid-year revenue target

The Board of Directors of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has congratulated the Commissioner-General and top management and staff of GRA for exceeding the 2024 mid-year revenue target of the Authority.

A statement signed by Joe Ghartey, chairman ofthe GRA Board of Directors, described the performance as historic and outstanding as it was on the back of many challenges.

“This historic performance was achieved against a background of strong headwinds, including the seasonal challenges in achieving revenue targets in election years,” it said.

“The Board strongly believes in the ability and the determination of Management and staff of GRA to work against all these odds and will continue to support them to achieve their targets,” the statement added.

The statement said the Commissioner-General would share more insights on these achievements this week.

The Board called on all valued stakeholders such as taxpayers, and the business community to provide GRA with the needed support to improve on revenue mobilization, the statement said.

Government to launch new programme for SME growth

The government will on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, launch a new programme aimed at delivering financial and technical support to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to turn them into ‘high-growth’ ventures.

Known as the SME Growth and Opportunity Programme, the initiative would prioritise coordination between partnering agencies to ensure the targeted delivery of financial and technical support to high-growth potential SMEs.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo would launch the SME Growth and Opportunity Programme on the margins of a summit, themed: “Breaking Barriers to SME Growth,” in Accra.

It would be under the auspices of the Ministries of Finance and Trade and Industries and their partnering agencies.

The partnering agencies are Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), and the Ghana EXIM Bank, the Development Bank Ghana (DBG), and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The Ministry of Finance said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency on Sunday, that the private sector players, academia, business regulatory and compliance institutions, media, industry, multilateral and bilateral partners as well as financial service providers would participate in the Summit.

On the sidelines of the event would be an exhibition of SME products.

Some key speakers at the event are Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister of Finance, Kobina Tahir Hammond, Minister of Trade and Industries, Dr Ernest Addison, Governor, Bank of Ghana (BoG), and Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President, African Development Bank (AfDB).

“The summit aims to enhance partnerships, mobilise diverse financial resources for SMEs growth and expansion and provide a platform for public and private sector actors to advocate inclusive policies and strategies required to enhance SME growth in Ghana,” the statement quoted Dr Amin Adam as saying.

Reigning New Artiste of the Year, King Paluta, stole the spotlight at the 2024 Ghana Party in Park (GPITP) festival in the United Kingdom.

The 19th edition of the GPITP festival, held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Oak Hill Park in Barnet, UK, featured an incredible celebration of Ghanaian music, food, and culture.

King Paluta, who was one of the headline acts for the festival, delivered an amazing stage performance that was arguably one of the best on the day, leaving patrons  ecstatic.

The music sensation performed his “Makoma” hit single for the first time after dominating the music charts and streaming platforms in the past week.

King Paluta’s energy on stage was infectious as patrons sang along to most of his songs, including “Yahitte,” “Sika Abia,” and the inspirational “Aseda” hit song.

There were also thrilling performances from Kidi, Wendy Shay, OlivetheBoy, Lasmid, KOTM Beeztrap, and Mishasha at one of the biggest Ghanaian outdoor events in the UK.

TGMA climaxes 25th anniversary celebrations with epic Stonebwoy performance.

Reigning Artiste of the Year, Stonebwoy, delivered a stunning performance to climax the silver jubilee celebrations of the prestigious Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Following an exciting awards event a few weeks ago, industry leaders gathered once more to celebrate the progress and success of the TGMAs since its inception in 1999.

Stonebwoy, who won six TGMA awards this year, headlined the “Industry Mixer”, event which took place at the newly built Palms Convention Centre at La Palm Royal Beach in Accra.

The award-winning Afro-Dancehall musician delivered a magnificent music performance that lasted an hour, with patrons in the auditorium enjoying some of his old and new hits.

The “Bhimnation President,” as he is popularly referred to, made a thrilling start to his performance with his “Solobo” hit single.

He further proceeded to perform some of his hit songs, including “Into the Future,” “Overlord,” “Run Go,” “Captivate,” and “Ekelebe.” 

Madam Theresa Ayoade, the Chief Executive Officer of Charterhouse Productions, organisers of the TGMA, revealed their intent of organising the ‘Industry Mixer’ event for the first time. 

“We decided to do this event because it is our 25th anniversary, and to crown it all, we thought of bringing industry players together and interacting with them.

“It was also intended to celebrate the Artiste of the Year, have a close encounter with him, and document his journey while cementing their legendary status,” she said.

Madam Ayoade also noted that plans were advanced in setting up the Hall of Fame Museum so that tourists, students, and other people could learn more about the history of Ghana’s music.

The event also witnessed Telecel, the headline sponsor of the music awards, announce that Stonebwoy would be paid for multiple events he performs during the year as well as products from the company.

The likes of Black Sherif, Kuami Eugene, and Nacee, who also won awards at this year’s TGMA, were also presented with their plaques.

Paul Amoah selected flagbearer for Team Ghana at Paris Olympics.

Joseph Paul Amoah will be Ghana’s captain and flagbearer at the upcoming Paris Olympics, which will take place from July 26–August 11, 2024.
Amoah, who is making his second successive appearance at the Olympics, would lead his countrymen who have qualified for the Paris Games.

Ghana will be presenting nine athletes at this year’s Olympics, including Fuseini Ibrahim (4×100), Isaac Botsio (4×100), Benjamin Azamati (4×100, 100m), Edwin Gadayi (4×100), and Abdul Rasheed Saminu (100, 200m).

Others include Joselle Mensah (swimming), Harry Stacey (swimming), and Rose Yeboah (high jump).

Some members of Team Ghana are currently in Strasbourg, France, preparing for the games, and would move to the Olympic Village in Paris on July 21, 2024.

Team Ghana would be hoping to improve on their last performance at the Olympics, where they won bronze in boxing.

Ghana has five medals from the Olympics (one silver and four bronze) and will be hoping to win its first medal in track and field.

UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology opens new office in Accra.

The United Kingdom Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), a research institute has opened its first international office in Accra to serve the West Africa sub-region.

 The new office will see to the building of partnerships with stakeholders and deliver sustainable solutions to environmental and socio-economic developmental challenges facing countries in the sub-region.

 It will provide the vital environmental science that governments, businesses, and researchers rely on to meetchallenges, contributing substantially to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals.

 Lord Cameron of Dillington, the Chair of the Board of Trustees of UKCEH and Madam Ophelia Mensah Hayford, the Minister of Environment, Science Technology and Innovation jointly cut a ribbon to signify the opening of the office.

 Madam Hayford speaking at the event said one of the major responsibilities placed on all governments was to ensure sound environmental management practices and that called for sound research.

 She explained that the establishment of the new centre was a great opportunity to collaborate to conduct more science and environmental research and provide tailored solutions to deal with challenges.

 The mission of the UKCEH, she said, was in line with Ghana’s recently revised Science Technology and Innovation Policy and African Union Agenda 2063.

 Mr Keith McMahon, the Deputy British High Commissioner, British High Commission recalled that last year the UK Ghana Science Technology and Innovation Strategy aimed to strengthen the partnership between the two countries in the areas of research, innovation, and technology transfer.

 That he said, sought to leverage the strengths of both nations to address common challenges and promote sustainable development.

 The Commissioner said the UKCEH was a world class research institution that had been at the forefront of environmental research in the last 50 years, helping countries to understand the natural world to inform policy.

 He stated that the new office was a testament to the UK’s effort to expand national science partnerships internationally.

 Professor Harry Dixon, Associate Director for International Research and Development at UKCEH, said the organisation had a track record of effective delivery, working with partners including cocoa farmers in Ghana, to develop an innovative mobile app to support ongoing productivity, climate change adaptation and long-term resilience.

 “We are working with collaborators to measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across different landscapes in Southeast Liberia, setting a baseline for future work to mitigate GHG emissions”.

 “Our research into Sahel storms is supporting the development of early warning systems and informing long-term climate adaptation planning, in partnership with meteorological services”.

Dr Stuart Wainwright, Chief Executive of UKCEH said for more than 30 years, UKCEH scientists have collaborated with a range of partners in West Africa, such as environmental policymakers, meteorological services, water management authorities, universities and conservation organisations, to jointly address the major environmental challenges in the region.

The opening of an office in West Africa , he noted, demonstrated the Centre’s commitment towards the region and its scientific communities, and assured to work together with stakeholders to tackle the major, complex environmental challenges that affect us all.

He stated that science needed international collaboration across boundaries more than it ever had in the past and expressed the hope that the office would be a hub of environmental science.

Professor Paul Bosu, the Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) said Ghana was facing challenges in its quest to explore its natural resources and the opening of the UKCEH office was timely to help deal with issues.

He assured of the support of all 13 institutes of the CSIR’s towards the achievement of the vision of the UKCEH office.

The UKCEH is a leading research institute employing over 500 of the world’s best environmental scientists.

Already, the UKCEH is working with scientists in West Africa to enhance monitoring of water resources, as well as improve flood and drought risk assessment and forecasting.

It is working with governments and environmental regulators to monitor metal pollution in watercourses, soil and food systems in mining areas.

The UKCEH is collaborating with the Ghanaian Government and United Nations to jointly develop a programme that maps biodiversity across the country.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI has sent a message to Donald Trump, in which the Sovereign expresses His sympathy and solidarity following the assassination attempt on him on Saturday during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In the message, His Majesty the King said that He was “shocked and deeply saddened by yesterday’s appalling assassination attempt at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.”

The Sovereign said he was relieved to learn that “you are safe,” while expressing His sympathy and solidarity following this heinous attack.

In this message, His Majesty the King strongly condemned political violence and wished Trump “a

speedy recovery so that you may continue to serve your great nation.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with you, Mr. President, your family, and the innocent victims of this deplorable act,” the message said.

World’s tropical domain reeling from over-exploitation – President Akufo-Addo laments

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to global leaders to take decisive steps to stop the over-exploitation of the world’s tropical domain.

He cautioned that illegal logging, unsupervised agricultural activities and climate change have had a negative toll on the forest regions – threatening it’s  ecology and biodiversity.

“Let us think globally but act locally, prioritising environmental stewardship alongside development,” he advised.

The President made the appeal while addressing the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation in Brazzaville, Congo.

The Conference aimed to unite global efforts in mitigating climate risks through extensive tree-planting initiatives, and adopt a declaration on afforestation while incorporating the “African and Global Decade of Afforestation” into the United Nations (UN) Agenda.

The event comes as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change‘s sixth report warns of greater-than-anticipated climate risks, especially for vulnerable African nations.

It aligns with the sustainable development goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda and the African Union‘s Agenda 2063, emphasising the role of forests in combating climate change and supporting global economic recovery.

The Conference’s cardinal objectives encompasses establishing a global afforestation strategy, increasing carbon sequestration, preserving biodiversity, and supporting forest-based goods and services.

President Akufo-Addo drew attention to the need for increased and dedicated financing to sustain efforts at reversing the damage caused to the environment.

“The tropical domain, home to nearly half of the world’s forests, cannot fund the required US$393 billion annually alone.

“We must pool resources and incentivise local communities to protect forests,” he pleaded.

He said investing in research and technology to enhance the understanding of forest dynamics was equally crucial to improving reforestation efforts.

The President pointed out forests were invaluable as they provided ecological, economic, and cultural benefits essential to human life.

“Our forests are vital ecological assets and an integral part of our heritage and identity. We must protect and restore them for future generations.”

President Akufo-Addo assured that Ghana was committed to leading in forest conservation and restoration, and would help to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Since 2016, the Government has seen to the establishment of over one million hectares of forest plantations, enrichment planting, and native tree seedling projects.

“These efforts have created rural employment for thousands and supported food security through agroforestry initiatives.

“Our Green Ghana Day Initiative, launched in 2021, has seen the planting of over 52 million trees in just four years, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of citizens, schools, and the private sector,” the President noted.

Anti-LGBTQI+ bill: Supreme Court will rule on interlocutory injunctions July 17

The Supreme Court has set July 17, 2024 as the date for the verdict in the two lawsuits brought by Broadcast Journalist Richard Dela Sky and Researcher Dr Amanda Odoi against Parliament’s approval of the contentious anti-gay statute.

Mr Sky is challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, and he is seeking a declaration that the bill passed by Parliament violates several provisions of the 1992 constitution, as well as the country’s laws and the constitutionally guaranteed basic human rights.

Dr. Odoi expressed reservations about particular clauses of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

She is also seeking a restraining order to prevent the Speaker, the Attorney General, and the Clerk of Parliament from sending the bill to President Akufo-Addo for his approval.

The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, announced to the court that the two cases would not be consolidated, and separate rulings would be delivered

This decision followed a request by the Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame

Counsel for Amanda Odoi, Dr Ernest Ackon, argued that the bill, if approved, imposes a direct charge on public funds, violating Article 108. He also pointed out the lack of a fiscal impact analysis before the bill was sent to the President.

The Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, the second respondent, argued that the Speaker’s discretion is not unconstrained by the constitution, hence warranting the apex court’s decision on the injunction application

Plaintiff Dr. Amanda Odoi seeks an injunction to stop the Speaker from transmitting the bill to the President.

The first Defendant on the case led by Counsel for the Speaker of Parliament Thaddeus Sory on his part, argued that the claims of the applicant regarding the need for a fiscal impact analysis were not supported by the constitution especially when the bill did not expressly say it will impose a charge on the consolidated fund.

According to him, the substance of the interlocutory injunction was not significantly different from a previous one filed by the plaintiffs and dismissed by the courts

He further argued that the transmission of the bill from the Speaker of Parliament to the President for him to assent is still an ongoing process that hasn’t been completed and, hence wasn’t within the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to deliberate on the matter.

He called on the court to dismiss the application before the bench.

The Supreme Court, chaired by Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkonoo, is currently hearing the Richard Dela Sky case.
