Britain will loan looted artifacts to Ghana.

Two British museums are returning plundered gold and silver artefacts to Ghana under a long-term loan agreement, as U.K. institutions face mounting pressure to hand up riches obtained during the British Empire’s reign over the world.

On Thursday, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and Ghana’s Manhyia Palace Museum announced a “important cultural collaboration.” The loan circumvents U.K. rules against the repatriation of such cultural assets, which have previously prevented the British Museum from returning the Parthenon Sculptures, popularly known as the Elgin Marbles, to Greece.

Some 17 items are involved in the loan arrangement, including 13 pieces of Asante royal regalia purchased by the V&A at auction in 1874. The items were acquired by the museums after British troops looted the royal palace in Kumasi during the Anglo-Asante wars of 1873-74 and 1895-96 and represent a small fraction of the artifacts held in the U.K.

“These objects are of cultural, historical and spiritual significance to the Asante people,’’ the museums said in a statement. “They are also indelibly linked to British colonial history in West Africa, with many of them looted from Kumasi during the Anglo-Asante wars of the 19th century.”

Countries including Nigeria, Egypt and Greece, as well as indigenous peoples from North America to Australia, are demanding the repatriation of artifacts and human remains amid a global reassessment of colonialism and the exploitation of local populations.

Nigeria and Germany recently signed a deal for the return of hundreds of Benin Bronzes, a general term for a trove of sculptures, cast plaques and royal regalia created from the 16th century onwards in the West African kingdom of Benin. That followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to sign over 26 pieces known as the Abomey Treasures, artworks from the 19th-century Dahomey kingdom in present-day Benin, a small country in west of Nigeria.

But the U.K. has been slower to respond. Officials argue that the objects were acquired legally and that institutions like the British Museum have long preserved them in an environment where they can be seen and studied by people from around the world.

The British government said the Ghana deal did not set a precedent for the Parthenon Marbles, which are the subject of a long-running diplomatic battle between the U.K. and Greece. The sculptures originally decorated the frieze of the Parthenon in Athens and were acquired by Lord Elgin, a British aristocrat and collector, in the early 18th century.

“This isn’t a new approach,” said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman, Max Blain. “There have been a number of loans. These take place from time to time between museums.”

He added that Britain “would expect the items to be returned at the end of that loan period.”

The items covered by the loan agreement include a “soul disk,” which the Asante king wore to protect his soul, as well as a peace pipe and seven sections of sheet-gold ornaments. They represent only a small portion of the Asante objects held by British museums and private collectors around the world. The British Museum alone says it has 239 items of Asante regalia in its collection.

Nana Oforiatta Ayim, special adviser to Ghana’s culture minister, said the deal was a “starting point,” given British laws that prohibit the return of cultural artifacts. But ultimately the regalia should be returned to its rightful owners, she told the BBC.

“I’ll give an analogy, if somebody came into your house and ransacked it and stole objects and then kept them in their house, and then a few years later said, ‘You know what, I’ll lend you your objects back,’ how would you feel about that?” she said.

Xabi Alonso answers to Liverpool connections as Bayer Leverkusen manager refuses to rule out an Anfield return to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

0

Xabi Alonso refuses to rule out a return to Anfield to follow Jurgen Klopp, despite speculation over the Liverpool managing position.

The German announced on Friday that he will leave his job at the conclusion of the season, prompting the Reds board to look for a new leader. Given his performance with Bayer Leverkusen this season, Alonso has been viewed as the most likely contender to succeed Klopp. The Basque was a key component in Liverpool’s mid-2000s metamorphosis, as well as the midfield anchor of Rafael Benitez’s team that won Europe on a memorable night in Istanbul in 2005.

WHAT ALONSO SAID

When Alonso was asked if he could rule out becoming the next Liverpool manager, he said: “That’s a direct question! I don’t have a direct answer. I’m happy here right now, that’s for sure, and only thinking about Leverkusen.”

On the shock of Klopp’s departure, he added: “I was surprised by Jurgen’s news. I have huge respect for Jurgen and Liverpool. At the moment I am really happy here and enjoying my work. Each day and game is a challenge. We are on an intense and beautiful journey here at Leverkusen.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alonso is on a beautiful journey with the German outfit as they have been playing exceptional football and are four points clear of Bayern Munich in the title race after 18 matches. They remain unbeaten in the league and are still alive and kicking in the DFB-Pokal. On the continental stage, Leverkusen topped their Europa League group maintaining a perfect win record.

DID YOU KNOW?

Klopp was the last manager to deny Bayern Munich the Bundesliga title back in 2012 when he was still with Borussia Dortmund. Alonso is on course to take up Klopp’s mantle and break the Bavarian dominance once again after over a decade.

WHAT NEXT?

Alonso remains the favourite to replace Klopp but might be lured away by Real Madrid if Carlo Ancelotti is asked to leave Santiago Bernabeu. Although the Italian penned an extension to shut down exit talks, things may change quickly in the Spanish capital if Los Blancos end up without any silverware come May.

Harry Kane branded’selfish’ and accused of solely concerned with ‘breaking Robert Lewandowski’s record’ in alleged Bayern Munich trophy bid.

0

Former Premier League player Paul Parker alleges that Harry Kane is “selfish” and that “everyone is laughing at him in England” during Bayern Munich’s trophy campaign.

The prolific 30-year-old forward will go to Germany in the summer of 2023 after ending his career with Tottenham. A €100 million (£85 million/$109 million) deal was claimed to be motivated by Kane’s ambition to win big prizes, which had proven elusive throughout his spell in north London.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane suffered defeat in the German Super Cup shortly after linking up with Bayern, and has seen them slip behind surprise leaders Bayern Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table. He has still registered 26 goals through 25 appearances, but has been accused of having records set by Robert Lewandowski dominating his thoughts.

WHAT PARKER SAID ABOUT KANE

That is the opinion of ex-England international Parker, with the Premier League title winner – who spent five years of his playing career at Manchester United – telling wettfreunde: “I think… as much as I’m not a big fan of Harry Kane, you have got to respect the amount of goals he is scoring. It’s definitely impressive. The problem is that he is not good to have around. The only thing he is focusing on is beating Lewandowski’s record. That’s the only thing he cares about and then he can come back to the Premier League to take another record.

“He is very selfish. Look, everyone is laughing about him in England. People were talking about him leaving because he wanted to win trophies and he is not winning anything. On the flipped side of things, Tottenham are doing extremely well. I said it when he was there, they would be better without him. Now, it shows that I was right. When Harry Kane is at a club, everything is about him. Everything. I think Spurs should be happy he left them.”

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE?

Tottenham have faltered slightly after enjoying an impressive start to the 2023-24 campaign, while talismanic captain Son Heung-min is currently away at the Asia Cup. Kane is their all-time leading scorer, with 280 efforts to his name, and did see a buy-back option included in the deal that took him to Munich.

Next NDC government will restructure AngloGold Ashanti – Mahama

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama has committed to revitalise AngloGold Ashanti, concentrating on job prospects for Obuasi locals and host towns to boost the local economy.

He made this pledge during a meeting with traditional leaders in Adansi as part of his broad stakeholder engagement visit in the Ashanti region.

Mr. Mahama also promised to revitalise an abandoned industrial cluster, emphasising its origins as a result of staff layoffs during a stop in operations at the gold mine.

He also refuted allegations of impeding AngloGold Ashanti’s operations throughout his tenure, emphasising his support for projects like as the Obuasi Deep Decline, which was launched to improve operations at the gold mine.

The former president also underscored his role in the establishment of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Obuasi campus, during his tenure, promising comprehensive measures to drive regional development.

“In countries with mineral extraction, development often follows. South Africa, for instance, has witnessed positive changes due to mining. We aim to leverage the benefits of mining in Adansi and neighbouring communities for their development,” he said.

Addressing concerns about electoral violence and fatalities during the 2020 elections, the NDC flagbearer expressed regrets and assured traditional leaders of the NDC’s commitment to fostering peace in the forthcoming 2024 elections.

“We are peaceful people as NDC, and we hope and promise that there will be no violence or deaths in the 2024 elections. It is rather unfortunate that lives were lost in the 2020 general elections. We promise a party to abide by the rules governing the elections to ensure a peaceful 2024 process. I would also plead with traditional authorities to engage the other political parties for a peaceful election,” the flagbearer of NDC assured.

NPP to hold parliamentary primaries for constituencies with sitting MPs tomorrow

0

All is set for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to conduct parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) for the Party tomorrow, January 27, 2024.

The polls are expected to take place in 105 constituencies across the country with a few incumbent MPs going unopposed.

Indications are that the primaries will be fiercely contested nationwide, but some constituencies are appearing to be battlegrounds ahead of the polls, which will elect candidates for the Party ahead of the December General Election.

The battleground constituencies include Adansi Asokwa, Dome Kwabenya, Asante Akim Central, Bantama, Tano North, Old Tafo and Bekwai.

The NPP, after securing a substantial majority with 169 seats in the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections, faced a significant setback in 2020.

The Party experienced a notable decline, losing 32 seats and reducing the numbers to 137 whilst the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) gained some seats, bringing their total to 137.

The NPP only regained the parliamentary majority when an independent candidate decided to align with the Party in Parliament.

In his assessment of the upcoming primaries during an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Professor Seidu Alidu, Head of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, said the elections would be “fiercely competitive” in the NPP’s stronghold constituencies due to the greater chances of the aspirant to secure a seat in Parliament.

He said the situation could be different in swing constituencies where the aspirants would have more work to do in the main elections.

“…What is more remarkable is that a lot of the incumbents have been there for several years and people might have issues with them; so if people are fed up with incumbent MPs and the delegates still vote for them, it may have an impact on their general performance in the General Election,” he said.

The voting will commence at 0700 hours and end at 1400 hours tomorrow.

There would be no proxy voting.

The National Executive Council of the Party earlier disqualified 17 pereons from contesting in the January 27 parliamentary primaries, leaving 322 candidates to contest in the elections.

Some three aspirants stepped down from the race, 33 individuals are going unopposed, and one aspirant’s application is under court process.

2024 Elections: Military men advised to avoid meddling in partisan politics

0

Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and other security agents have been advised to focus on their constitutional mandate and avoid indulging in partisan politics in the build-up to December ,7 2024 general elections.

Colonel George A. Biah (retired), who gave the advice, said: “The future of the Ghana Armed Forces and the security of the nation depends on the decision we take today. We should be nationalistic and avoid partisan politics in the discharge of our duties.”

He was speaking as the Guest of Honour when the Second Infantry Battalion (2BN) of the Ghana Army held a Drum-Head Parade to commemorate the 79th Anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung.

The parade, held joint;y with the Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG), at the Myohaung Barracks at Apremdo in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality of the Western Region, is an annual event to honour and remember the sacrifices of the gallant soldiers during the Battle of Myohaung in second World War.

Col. Biah (Rtd) noted that the GAF was the custodians of the country’s democratic principles, and that personnel’s professionalism, impartiality, and adherence to the rule of law were essential to ensuring peace, security, and the sustenance of Ghana’s democratic gains.

“Our actions must be a testament to our loyalty to the nation, and so, we must not relent our oars but continue the good job to ensure peace and the sustenance of our enviable, and cherished democracy,” he said.

He continued: “We are not politicians but professionals in arms, hence we must support the political objectives of the state and take a cue from our predecessors by building on the solid foundations laid.”

Col. Biah (Rtd), however, commended the Ghana Armed Forces for maintaining stability in the country, saying, “For decades, Ghana has stood tall as a beacon of democracy in Africa. Our dear nation Ghana is the most peaceful country in the West African Sub-Region, so kudos to the Ghana Armed Forces and all the other security services for toiling relentlessly to maintain our democracy, peace, and stability.”

He called for the need for security agencies to continue to strengthen their collaborations at the district, regional and national levels to collectively avert possible terrorist threats that had taken over some parts of the West African Sub-Region.

“In the face of terrorism and violent extremism, there ought to be enhanced intelligence sharing and joint training among our security services to help present a united front against this menace,” Col. Biah (rtd) added.

I am bringing parliament to your doorsteps – Frank Yeboah

0

Mr. Frank Yeboah, a parliamentary aspirant contesting to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency, is promising to bring parliament to the doorsteps of constituents when elected.

“I will set up an office where constituents can book appointments to meet me anytime, I am in the constituency,” he said at a town hall engagement with Atwima Nwabiagya North NPP delegates, ahead of the party’s primaries on Saturday.

This, according to the aspirant, would not only make him accessible to the people but also bridge the seeming gap between Members of Parliament (MPs) and their constituents.

“I shall also introduce quarterly town hall meetings to brainstorm and address pressing issues collectively for the speedy development of Atwima Nwabiagya North,” he added.

Mr. Yeboah who contested the incumbent MP, Mr. Benito Owusu Bio in 2016 and 2020, believes it is time for the delegates to reward his loyalty having kept faith with the party and contributing to its electoral fortunes despite losing twice to the incumbent.

“I contested in 2016 and lost but I didn’t go independent and continued to serve the party.

In 2020, I came again, and the delegates said I should wait so this is the time and I believe that they are going to reward me come January 27,” he told the media.

Among his topmost priorities when elected is to lobby for the construction of the poor road network in the constituency which remains a major concern of the people.

While acknowledging the efforts of the incumbent to get the roads fixed, Mr. Yeboah said it would require a person with effective lobbying skills to accelerate work on the roads.

He announced plans to institute what he called “Club 100”, a mentorship programme, which will target the youth by equipping them with entrepreneurial skills with the goal of addressing youth unemployment in the constituency.

He said he would mobilise prominent entrepreneurs in the constituency to mentor young ones aspiring to build their own businesses as a long-term measure to boost the local economy.

Mr. Yeboah, who is the Director of Procurement and Projects at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), is upbeat about his third attempt to represent the good people of Atwima Nwabiagya North on the ticket of the NPP.

He, however, faces stiff competition from Dr Dickson Osei-Assibey, a Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

I’ll unite NPP in Dormaa Central- Parliamentary aspirant

0

Dr. Yaw Yeboah, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant in the Dormaa Central Constituency of the Bono Region has pledged to unite the rank and file of the Party in the constituency.

He said the Party required a formidable force to maintain the constituency parliamentary seat to enhance its Election 2024 victory fortunes.

Dr Yeboah is challenging Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), and Minister of Health to represent the Party in the Election 2024.

In a media engagement at Dormaa-Ahenkro, Dr Yeboah stressed his determination to work hard to resolve pertinent challenges confronting the Party, including a case pending at the Sunyani High Court.

He emphasised on his personality, character trait, and vetting process as well as work experience and sacrifice for the NPP coupled with his intention and 15 years quest to become an MP for the constituency.

Dr Yeboah, also the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Tema-based Volta Aluminum Company Limited (VALCO) alleged the incumbent MP had failed to present the developmental challenges of the area to Parliament.

“How many times have you heard your MP talk about the Aboabo roads and other major challenges of the area in Parliament,” he questioned, insisting “by this posture he has not properly represented the people well enough,”

Dr Yeboah indicated he had visited and engaged about 700 Party delegates in the constituency, who also inspired him to contest the primaries, win the parliamentary seat and push the development of the constituency forward.

He said with his proven track record, rich experience, and innovative skills, he could push the development of the constituency to the next level and therefore appealed to the delegates to endorse him.

“I provided funding for the renting of the Party’s office adjacent to the Dormaa Senior High School, furnished the place with computer and printer and supported the limited voters’ registration exercise held last August,” he cited.

“I played an instrumental role in the establishment of clinics at Kwameasua and Aboabo as well as constructing the Gh¢18,500.00 Kofiasua borehole project,” Dr. Yeboah added and expressed confidence in the delegates’ readiness to support him to actualize his dreams and visions for the constituency.

He said the constituency required change if the Party could retain the seat, saying he was the right person who could do that and implored the delegates to give him the nod on Saturday.

Dr. Yeboah promised to work together with traditional authorities, religious leaders, and everybody to advance the progress of the area if he won both the primaries and the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Let’s come out of the NPP primaries more united-Dr Bawumia to aspirants

0

The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged all parliamentary aspirants contesting at this weekend’s elections to ensure that the Party comes out of the process more strengthened and united for victory in the 2024 Election.

In his goodwill message to the aspirants, Dr Bawumia said only a united party could ensure success at the polls in 2024.

“The election of December 2024 is crucial for our party and nation. The NPP needs to come out of this process strengthened, united and ready to deliver victory in 2024,” Dr Bawumia said in a release.

“We must rise above personal interests and petty differences and focus on the greater goal of advancing the principles and ideals of our great party, the New Patriotic Party,” he said.

Extending his sincerest wishes of good fortune to all the aspirants who have put themselves forward for consideration, the NPP Flagbearer pointed out that it would take hardwork and sacrifices to make the journey. It requires a commitment to serving the people,” he said.

The Vice President also urged all the aspirants to be guided by the principles underpinning the Party’s democratic culture, the principles of freedom, fairness, and peace.

“We are all responsible for ensuring the integrity of our party’s electoral system and ensuring compliance with the decisions of the delegates of our party,” Dr Bawumia added.

Vice President Bawumia also congratulated all the Members of Parliament who are going unopposed in the primaries and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by ensuring that they work assiduously to help the party secure victory in 2024.

“I also wish to congratulate all Members of Parliament who are running unopposed in their constituencies. The party and their constituents have expressed confidence in their leadership. I, therefore, entreat them to justify their confidence by working with all stakeholders to deliver their constituencies in the presidential and parliamentary polls,” Dr Bawumia said.

If elected in 2024, I would tackle unemployment. – Mahama

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will implement a comprehensive National Apprenticeship Programme aimed at generating jobs and developing young people’s abilities.

He said that the programme will be carried out by local assemblies, with craftsmen encouraged to involve and employ young people.

The NDC flagbearer, who is on the “Building Ghana We Want Tour” in the Ashanti Region, spoke with residents of New Edubiase, detailing plans to combat young unemployment if elected in 2024.

“For individuals outside the school system, our emphasis is on skill enhancement, enabling them to explore opportunities in hairdressing, seamstressing, and other artisanal crafts. The next NDC government aims to establish a National Apprenticeship Program, with District Assemblies leading the implementation. They will oversee the registration of artisanal business owners and attach the young people with them. Local Assemblies will allocate funding to mentors who will guide these young individuals,” Mr. Mahama promised.

In his interaction with cocoa farmers in New Edubiase, Mr. Mahama said the next NDC will introduce initiatives to help the growth of the cocoa sector.

“The next NDC government will continue previous initiatives to improve the cocoa sector. Additionally, we will provide factories in cocoa-growing areas to ensure we add value to the cocoa beans instead of exporting them in their raw form. This will go a long way to help cocoa farmers, and the factories will also help provide jobs to the youth in these areas,” he stated.
