The Ghana Statistical Service reports that the country’s inflation rate decreased from 40.1% in August to 38.1% in September 2023. (GSS).

According to the GSS, the drop in inflation was brought on by lower prices for both food and non-food items. While non-food inflation decreased from 30.9% to 29.3%, food inflation dropped from 51.9% in August to 49.4% in September.

The decrease in inflation, according to Government Statistician Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, is a good development.

Good news has arrived for Ghanaian consumers and businesses with the decline in inflation.

It indicates that prices are increasing more slowly, which will increase purchasing power and increase economic activity.

Before delivering the next tranche of the $3 billion bailout package, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it will await the conclusion of Ghana’s engagement with its bilateral creditors.

The IMF’s Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, revealed this in a tweet on Wednesday after meeting with Ghanaian officials to discuss the next steps.

Following an assessment of the country’s economic growth and the disbursement of the first tranche of $600 million, Ghana recently struck a staff-level agreement with the IMF.

Georgieva complimented Ghana on the achievement of the staff-level agreement.

In a tweet, she said “Great to meet @MoF_Ghana Min Ofori-Atta & @thebankofghana Gov Addison at #IMFMeetings. Congrats on the recent staff-level agreement on the Fund-supported program’s first review. Counting on bilateral creditors reaching agreement on debt relief soon to move the review forward.”

The IMF and Ghana reached a staff-level agreement on October 6 on economic policies and reforms to conclude the first review of the country’s three-year program under the Extended Credit Facility.

This agreement is subject to approval by the IMF’s Executive Board and receipt of the necessary financing assurances.

The IMF has praised Ghana’s strong policy and reform commitment under the program, which it says is bearing fruit and leading to signs of economic stabilization.

In a report, the IMF noted that growth in 2023 has proven more resilient than initially envisaged, inflation has declined, the fiscal and external positions have improved, and the exchange rate has stabilized.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has appealed to its bilateral creditors to quickly agree on current debt relief terms to enable Ghana to secure the second tranche of the package from the IMF.

“Grateful for strong IMF support, and calling on bilateral creditors to agree on debt relief terms as quickly as possible,” the Ministry posted on its X (Twitter) handle.

After being questioned by police regarding an alleged assault on Kennedy Kankam, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Asokore Mampong Municipality, Rashid Dauda, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) organizer for the Asawase Constituency, was later freed on bond.

Earlier, Mr. Dauda and a few constituency executives addressed the MCE in his office and demanded that money be released to support the recent Restricted Voter Registration exercise’s activities.

The Constituency Organizer and the MCE got into an argument over the MCE’s rejection.

Even though the event was reported weeks ago, Mr. Dauda wasn’t questioned until Tuesday by the Asokore Mampong police.

After his statement was taken, he was released on bail while police investigations continue.

The First Vice Chairman of the NPP in the Asawase Constituency, Noah Owusu, denied claims that Mr. Dauda physically assaulted the MCE during their altercation.

He expressed concern that this situation is creating tension within the NPP in the constituency.

Today, October 11, Financial Court 2 of the High Court Complex will hear a request from former Minister of Sanitation Cecilia Dapaah over the seizure and freezing order submitted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The same Financial Court 2 will hear the OSP’s request for permission to file a supplementary affidavit in order to present more evidence discovered against Ms Dapaah on Monday, October 16.

On October 10, Cecilia Dapaah submitted a request for an interlocutory injunction against the OSP in an effort to prevent the Office from looking into and bringing charges against her and her husband, Daniel Osei Kufuor, for alleged corruption and associated offenses.

According to court documents obtained by citinewsroom.com, the former Minister is also pleading with the judge to order the OSP to do something.

She is also praying the court to declare the reseizure of monies found in her Abelemkpe residence and the refreezing of her bank accounts as unfair and capricious.

“A Declaration that the Respondent’s re-seizure of the money (initially seized from the Applicant’s home on 24/07/23) and re-freezing of Applicant’s bank accounts respectively on 5th September 2023 is unfair, unreasonable, capricious, arbitrary, and ultra vires the Respondent’s statutory powers under Act 959 relative to the constitutional provisions of Articles 23 and 296 of the Constitution, 1992.”

Cecilia Dapaah came into the limelight in July when it emerged that two of her house helps were before an Accra Circuit Court, for allegedly stealing monies and items running into millions of Ghana Cedis.

Calls were made for her to resign and be investigated and she yielded to the public pressure and resigned from her position on July 22, 2023.

Message Alan to come back – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to NPP

0

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader and minister of parliamentary affairs, has encouraged the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make contact with former party stalwart Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen in an effort to persuade him to rejoin the party.

In September, Mr. Kyerematen announced his resignation from the NPP and stated that he will run as an independent for movement leader.

The Suame MP thinks that reaching out to Mr. Kyerematen could put an end to all of the problems.

“I think that every effort must be made, even if it’s a one percent possibility, let’s see what will come out of it. We are talking about Alan’s situation, where we are saying that let’s still engage if he will come back. To now go into specifics will be a difficulty, it may hamper the reconciliation I’m suggesting. It’s possible to bring him back,” the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs opined in a media interview.

The former Minister for Trade and Industry announced his decision to break away from the party and run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections on September 25th.

He cited intimidation against his supporters and the party being hijacked by a select few.

Mr. Kyerematen’s decision sent shockwaves through the political landscape, as he has been a steadfast member of the NPP for many years.

Mr. Kyerematen is a seasoned politician who is widely recognized for his contributions to the NPP and his roles in various government positions.

Three technicians were suffocated by a fuel reservoir that wasn’t for us—COCOBOD

The gasoline reservoir that killed three workers on Monday while they were performing maintenance has been denied ownership by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

The five-technician crew that was engaged to maintain the reservoir on the grounds of the COCOBOD’s Koforidua office included the three technicians Michael Ashie, Jonathan Kokroko, and Paul Ocloo.

The Eastern Regional National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) reportedly received a call regarding the incident on Monday at around 11 o’clock.

Yet, COCOBOD vehemently denied ownership of the aforementioned reservoir in a statement.

“The said fuel dump tank is owned, used and managed by Produce Buying Company (PBC), a limited liability company which is neither a division nor subsidiary of COCOBOD. The exercise that the technicians were engaged to undertake has absolutely nothing to do with COCOBOD.”

COCOBOD further urged the media to be circumspect as the security services are investigating the incident.

“Our preliminary investigations have further revealed that the relevant security and regulatory agencies are fully involved in the matter to ascertain the cause of the unfortunate incident and put in place measures to forestall future occurrences.”

“We wish to assure our media friends that our doors are always open for discussions on issues of this nature and all inquiries concerning the operation of Ghana’s cocoa sector.”
