The Electoral Commission (EC) registered 85,152 eligible voters in the just-ended limited voter registration exercise in the Central Region.

Of the number, 43,569, representing 51.17 per cent, were males whilst 41,583, making 48.83 per cent, were females.

In all, 46,033 eligible voters were registered through the guarantor system, 39,024 used Ghana cards, 95 used Ghana passports, and 178 were people with disability.

Eligible registrants between ages 18 and 20 constituted the highest record numbers of 74,708, comprising 38,052 males and 36,656 females, followed by those aged 21 to 65 years, representing 10,213, including 4,826 females.

The aged, 66 years and above, were 229 with 101 females.

Mr Manu Sakyi, the Deputy Regional Director of EC, told the Ghana News Agency that some 543 registrants who opted for the guarantor system were challenged mainly on age authenticity.

However, the Commission hoped to deal with all challenged cases by Friday, October 6, through the district committees made up of eminent personalities and institutional representatives.

He gave the assurance that the EC would monitor and take a post-registration action in accordance with the law in order not to disenfranchise any eligible Ghanaian.

The EC began a 21-day exercise from Tuesday, September 12 to Monday, October 2, at its district offices nationwide from 0800 hours to 1700 hours each day, including weekends.

The exercise was to capture people who turned 18 years since the last registration in 2020 as well as other eligible voters who had not previously registered with the EC.

Registration was done online using the District Management System (DMS), as well as offline by way of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kit.

Though Mr Sakyi could not immediately provide district figures for the exercise, he was elated the registration was successful with maximum cooperation from all stakeholders, particularly political parties, who monitored the process to its logical conclusion.

Challenges encountered in the early days of the registration exercise were quickly resolved, some of which were disruptions in the internet, fluctuations in power, and breakdown of kits, he said.

The online system intermittently suffered breakdown in some areas but was addressed with the addition of the offline data capturing backups.

Mr Sackey mentioned occasional misapprehensions amongst political parties, essentially the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, but that did not blight the exercise.

Another exercise began on Tuesday, October 3, to Monday, October 9, at all EC district offices for vote transfer and replacement of ID cards.

A total of 3,153 eligible voters, including 1,681 females, were registered in the Assin Central Municipality at the close of the 21-day exercise organized by the Electoral Commission (EC).

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ransford Tetteyfio, Assin Central Municipal Director of EC, said the exercise was conducted in a serene atmosphere devoid of conflicts and commended the political parties and stakeholders for their immense support.

However, he said, seven applicants had their registration challenged, but four of the cases were resolved amicably and the remaining were disqualified outright since they were not residents in the town.

In a related development, Mrs. Christabel Okai, Assin North District Director of EC disclosed to GNA that 3,056 applicants were registered with 1,464 females.

The exercise was in accordance with Article 45 of the 1992 Constitution.

It afforded Ghanaians who had attained the voting age of 18 years since the last registration in 2020 and others, who were more than 18 years, but could not register during the last registration, the opportunity to do so.

She noted that 35 of the applicants were challenged but 33 of the cases were cleared whilst two were dismissed.

Mrs. Okine applauded political parties in the area for their unflinching support towards the exercise.

She pointed out that the ongoing voter ID transfer had commenced and appealed to registered voters who wished to make transfers to come along with valid requirements to ensure a transparent exercise.

One hundred youth, constitutingthe third batch of AngloGold Ashanti’s Youth Apprenticeship Programme (YAP), have graduated at a colourful ceremony at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

The programme, a collaboration between AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine and Mac Partners Training Institute, provides one-year practical training in various trades to the beneficiaries.

The young people, drawn from host communities of the mining firm, were taught welding and fabrication, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering after a rigorous selection process.

This is to equip them with knowledge and hands-on experience to position them for employment opportunities.

Mr Emmanuel Baidoo, the Senior Manager-Sustainability of AngloGold Ashanti, said the company believed that investing in education and vocational skills for the youth in host communities could enhance their employability.

That would also go a long way to contribute to the overall development and prosperity of Obuasi and the Ashanti Region in general.

“We are immensely proud of our partnership with host communities through the Youth Apprenticeship Programme and the positive impact it has on the lives of our youth,” he noted.

AngloGold Ashanti continued to prioritise skill-building initiatives that empowered the local youth, which was part of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, Mr Baidoo said.

“By investing in the youth’s education and training, the Obuasi Mine reinforces its mission to create a sustainable and prosperous future for the communities in which it operates.”

Mr Seth Quaye, the Managing Director of Mac Partners Training Institute, said the trainees had developed practical experience, which was the backbone of industries, and urged them to make maximum use of the skills acquired.

He said they represented the future of industry not only in mining but other fields, who would make significant impacts in their chosen careers.

The graduation should not be an end to their journey but rather the beginning of processes for continuous skills acquisition and refinement to achieve their aims and aspirations, he said.

More than 1,200 persons from the Krachi East Municipality have received entrepreneurship and skills training.

The six-day workshop was organised and funded by Mr Michael Yaw Gyato, Parliamentary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Krachi East, in collaboration with Aseda Foundation.

The participants were trained in pastries, pomade, soap, dressmaking, hairdressing, detergents (liquid soap, Dettol, parasol, and bar soap.

The training, which forms part of the Parliamentary aspirant’s support, is geared towards equipping the unemployed youth with the skills needed for them to be self-employed.

Mr Gyato told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the programme, would yield positive results as much research have proven that vocational apprenticeship training increases trade specific skills and general job skills.

The former legislature said he had the responsibility to better the lives of the people in his constituency and that is why he began the programme.

Mr Bernard Aborkugya Mensah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), urged the beneficiaries to uphold their various careers with integrity and strive to expand, so as to train and employ more people.

He assured that the Municipal Assembly would support beneficiaries, who would do well to sustain and expand their businesses.

Reverend Benard Agyei, Secretary to Aseda Foundation, reiterated the commitment of the Agency to serve as a catalyst for transforming the lives of the youth and create more sustainable jobs and wealth.

He entreated them to make use of the knowledge they have acquired to become shining examples in their communities.

MCE reiterates appeal to renovate Sandema Hospital

0

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Builsa North, Madam Vida Akantagriwen Anaab, has reiterated appeals by residents in the area to government to renovate the Sandema Hospital for effective health service delivery.

She said the facility needed urgent renovation to enable it to effectively render services to its teeming clients within and outside the Municipality.

She said the current state of the 93-year-old facility was a looming danger, and called for urgent attention from the government to renovate the facility which is the only referral centre for the entire Builsa area.

Madam Anaab, who is a retired Midwife and former staff of the Hospital, made the appeal at a Regional Inter-sectorial meeting organized at the instance of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Bolgatanga.

The meeting, which brought together Heads of Departments and Agencies in the Region, including Municipal and District Chief Executives, offered participants the opportunity to discuss critical issues in the various sectors and find solutions to them.

The MCE expressed concern about the leaking roof of the entire hospital, saying “The entire facility leaks terribly when it rains. The hospital needs help.”

Even though the Ghana News Agency in Sandema, the Municipal capital, had over the period churned out reports about the plight of the Hospital and the need for urgent renovation, there has not been any support.

Apart from the Builsa area, the facility receives medical and surgical cases from Yagaba-Kubori in the Mamprugu-Moagduri District of the North East Region and parts of the Upper West Region.

The facility was established in 1930 to cater for residents’ health needs and was later upgraded to a Health Centre in 1970 and then a District Hospital in 1992.

The Hospital has not seen any renovation to date.

Madam Anaab told stakeholders at the meeting that there were visible cracks on walls, broken louvre blades and doors, exposed electrical cables and obsolete medical equipment which needed to be replaced.

The retired Midwife emphasized the need for stakeholders, chiefs, government and Non-Governmental Organizations, and philanthropists to rally support to fix the Hospital.

She said the Builsa North Municipality was not a beneficiary of the ‘Agenda 111’ project initiated by government to construct 111 Hospitals across Districts in the country without Hospitals and stressed the need to maintain the Sandema Hospital.

Rwandan diplomat criticizes UK’s migration policy while covertly filmed

A video showing Rwanda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom criticising the British government’s migration policies has surfaced.

In an undercover investigation revealed on Saturday, Johnston Busingye was secretly videotaped by the advocacy organisation ‘Led By Donkeys’ (Sep. 30).

When asked what he would say to Home Secretary or British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the former Justice Minister, who currently serves as an ambassador, said British authorities required a long-term migration policy.

“They should have a long-term idea,” Busingye  said. “They should have a long-term policy of making it a choice for people not to risk their lives coming to the UK. Because right now, many people are not coming here because of war in their country. No, they’re coming here because they are hopeless. They’re coming here because they have no future.”

In another segment of the Led By Donkeys’ investigation which was conducted by journalist Antony Barnett, Johnston Busingye says it is “immoral” for Britain to claim to be a compassionate country given its past in places including “Africa”, “India” and “China”.

“[It] is immoral for this country to still see themselves as the refugee country, the solace country, the protection country, the compassion country,” he said. “They enslaved millions of people for 400 years.”

Rwanda’s government slammed the investigation by LedByDonkeys. And said Saturday that Kigali operates from a position of mutual respect and open dialogue with the UK on the Migration and Economic Development Partnership deal both countries signed.

It said its High Commissioner to the UK plays “an important role in maintaining” the nations’ bilateral ties.

The deal between the UK and Rwanda to send migrants and asylum seekers to Rwanda has earned London much criticism, mostly from its opposition and the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), who have called for its cancellation.

The British court of appeal ruled deporting migrants to Rwanda “illegal” in June.

Despite protests against the plan, the Uk government said it would bring the case before the Supreme Court.

The former first lady of Ghana, Theresa Kufuor, who died away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, has been honoured by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

On Sunday, October 1, Mrs. Kufuor, the wife of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, passed away in the company of her family at her Peduase residence. She was 87 years old.

President Akufo-Addo stated in a statement released on Monday, “My wife, Rebecca, the First Lady, and I shall miss her very much. We offer President Kufuor, their children, grandkids, and other family members our sincere sympathies on their tragic loss. We pray for her to find comfort in the Almighty’s bosom, where she is due, until the Final Day of the Resurrection, when we will all be reunited.

He emphasised that he was very saddened by the death of Mrs. Kufuor as her passing reminded him keenly of human mortality, “that the Almighty God will come for each and every one of us at the appropriate time.”

According to him, Mama Theresa, as she was affectionately called, was a devoted companion of President Kufuor throughout their sixty-one (61) years of marriage.

“She was an invaluable and constant source of advice, encouragement and prayers for him. Member of a well-known family from Odumase, in the Bono Region, sister of the renowned statesman, the late J.H Mensah, and aunt of President Kufuor’s Secretary, the brilliant diplomat, Ambassador D.K Osei, she was politically astute, and was a major contributor to her husband’s political success. She was a composed and articulate First Lady, polyglot, fluent in several languages including Ewe, who brought great dignity to the position.” the president added.

He indicated that he knew several members of her family, especially her celebrated brother, and he was grateful that he had the opportunity to know her too.

“Her warmth, kindness and grace were exceptional. She bore the vicissitudes of life with great stoicism and an unshakable belief in the sovereignty of Almighty God,” he added.

Akufo-Addo calls on the ECOWAS Assembly to suggest steps to reduce coups and instability.

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ordered the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with developing specific suggestions to assist governments across West Africa in dealing with escalating and pervasive insecurity and coups d’états.

The president thinks that identifying the core causes of military insurgencies will better position the sub-region to deal with recent security issues that threaten the ECOWAS bloc’s peaceful democracies.

President Akufo-Addo stated during the 2nd ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar in Winneba, Central Region, that the entire African continent cannot abandon its democratic traditions.

“Brainstorming on all these major challenges that I have just outlined in the search for solutions to the political insecurity crisis facing our region is the imperative mission of this seminar. One of the expected outcomes is to help us understand even better the root causes of democratic regression and political instability in the region in order to better address them. This seminar, over the next three days, must propose measures to ensure the anchoring of democratic and republican values, both on the level of political elites and citizens of the community.”

“This will help preserve the peace and stability of the region. I can assure you that the authority of heads of state and governments of ECOWAS will be receptive to all your proposals and await them with great interest.”
