Africa must produce and trade its way out of poverty and underdevelopment, according to Bawumia.

0

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that Africa requires smart investment in critical infrastructure.

Speaking at the official launch of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues on Thursday (26 January) at the Safari Valley Resort in Adukrom, Eastern Region, Bawumia said Africans must produce and trade their way out of poverty and underdevelopment.

“As a continent, we need to produce and trade our way out of poverty and underdevelopment, and we cannot do that without investing in smart infrastructure across the continent,” Dr Bawumia said.

He added “While the last decades have seen some positive investment, there is the need for additional resources to finance the arteries for trade, which include the physical infrastructure such as roads, rail and energy, digital infrastructure such as data centres and financial infrastructure to allow for integration of our financial markets.”

For his part, the Secretary-General of AfCFTA was speaking at the opening of the maiden Africa Prosperity Dialogues at the Safari Valley Resort in Adukrom in the Eastern Region.

He said, “It is really an honour for us to be part of this dialogue because we have an opportunity as Africans a positive narrative about the challenges that we confront.

“Indeed, I believe that Africa’s challenges are Africa’s opportunities,” he added.

Cut the cost of operation – Mireku Duker urges mining sector agencies

0

Mr George Mireku Duker, a Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Mines, has entreated heads of mining sector agencies to be cost-effective in their operations due to the current economic challenges.

He asked them to reduce costs in the payment of allowances, fuel utilisation and the number of vehicles used to save money for the state.

“In view of the current economic situation we find ourselves, we need to make sacrifices and be cost-effective in our operations and activities this year,” he said.

Mr Mireku Duker gave the advice at the opening of a retreat for mining sub-sector agencies in Accra on Thursday.

Participating agencies include the Minerals Commission, Precious Minerals Marketing Company, Minerals Development Fund, Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation, Ghana Survey Authority, and Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation.

Every head of agency is supposed to make a presentation on his/her Action Plan for the year and outline measures put in place to achieving them.

The retreat will enable the heads to take stock of the previous year’s activities and engage in in-depth discussions on issues pertaining to their sectors, challenges and prospects.

The feedback received would feed into the Ministry’s main retreat slated at the end of the first quarter of the year.

The Deputy Minister said the platform would allow the heads to fine-tune the key performance indicators set for them and help them to meet targets.

He, therefore, entreated them to work closely with one another to achieve the Ministry’s objectives.

Professor Peter Agbesinyale, the Chief Director of the Ministry, urged the agencies to work towards improving upon last year’s performance and meet their targets for this year.

GAC holds Regional Dialogue Meeting

0

The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has held the Country Coordinating Mechanism’s (CCM) Regional Dialogue Meeting in the Upper West Region to solicit inputs from stakeholders towards the development of Ghana’s grant proposal to secure funding from the Global Fund.

The Global Fund had allocated US$234,047,997.00 in funding to Ghana for the 2024 – 2026 application year to help fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and Malaria.

Speaking at the meeting in Wa, Mr Dramani Yakubu, the Upper West Regional Technical Coordinator of the GAC, said the meeting was to enable the CCM engage governmental and non-governmental agencies, Academia, and Traditional Authority among others on the grant application.

He explained that similar engagements had been held with key populations and other vulnerable groups in the region to also solicit their inputs into the proposal.

He said the CCM regional dialogue meetings, which would take place in all the 16 regions in the country, would culminate in a national dialogue in Accra before the grant proposal was finalised.

Mr Yakubu indicated that the Global Fund was established about two decades ago by the United Nations under the leadership of the late Kofi Anan, a former UN Secretary General as part of efforts in fighting HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, especially in developing countries.

“The Global Fund was established to attract, manage, and disburse resources through a new public-private partnership to sustain and contribute to the reduction of infections, illness, and death caused by HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria globally.

The Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) was founded alongside the Global Fund to be responsible for developing grant proposals, overseeing effective implementation of approved grants, monitoring progress towards meeting set targets, and reviewing programme performance”, he explained.

Mr Jonathan Tetteh-Kwao Teye, a representative of the CCM team, observed that the CCM was mandated to, among other things, engage stakeholders on national programme priorities, allocation, and utilisation of financial resources for the development of grant proposals.

He made presentations on the HIV Portfolio Analysis including the key national HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and TB data, an overview of the current New Funding Model (NFM3) grant, and an outline for NFM4 preparations to guide the participants in their deliberation.

The participants were grouped into three after the presentations to deliberate on what was working well under the NFM3, the gaps that needed to be filled, and to suggest effective, efficient, and innovative solutions on how Ghana could achieve health-related Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

One group was tasked to discuss issues related to HIV/AIDS and TB, another group to deal with Malaria, and the third group to also handle community and health systems strengthening.

The regional office of the Ghana AIDS Commission was also charged to collate all the ideas and inputs from the stakeholders into a comprehensive report for CCM’s consideration.

Representatives from Civil Society Organisations, Ghana Health Service, Academia, Security Services, traditional authorities, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies among others attended the meeting.

This is an affront to the Minority Caucus’ dignity – Ayine on how Haruna and others were removed

0

Former Deputy Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine is dissatisfied with how National Democratic Congress (NDC) national executives changed the leadership of the Minority in Parliament.

For him, announcing their removal in a statement without consulting the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) and lawmakers is an insult to the Minority caucus’ dignity.

“It’s about the dignity of the caucus, not about personalities,” the Bolgatanga East lawmaker said at a press conference in Parliament on Thursday, January 26.

Cletus Avoka, Member of Parliament for Zebilla East, also stated that the Speaker of Parliament has not informed the Minority caucus or the entire House of any changes to the leadership of the party.

He also said at the same press conference that “For us there is no reshuffle yet, the Speaker has not communicated to us.”

Aswase Member of Parliament Muntaka Mubarak asked his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to sit up.

Muntaka is unhappy with the changes that have been made to the leadership of the Minority by the party.

He believes that the decision was made by a few executives although the statement announcing it was signed by the General Secretary Fifi Kwetey.

“If you cannot write a letter to appoint, how can you write to disappoint?” He asked at a press conference in Parliament on Thursday.

He added “We don’t want to create enmity among us unnecessarily, we believe that the right process should be followed.

He further stated if “the right process is followed we will be happy and thank them for the opportunity to serve.

“We hope that they will help fast-track the hearing of the issues.”

The Morning After: Donald Trump regains access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts

0

Meta has already extended former President Donald Trump’s “indefinite” suspension from Facebook for over two years. His account has now been restored by the company. According to Meta, Trump will be able to access his Facebook and Instagram accounts in the “coming weeks,” but “new guardrails will be in place to deter repeat offences.”

Trump’s campaign reportedly lobbied for his reinstatement on Facebook ahead of the upcoming presidential primaries. Meta’s decision comes just months after Elon Musk restored former President Barack Obama’s Twitter account. Trump has so far declined to resume his Twitter habit, despite the fact that he has been a Truth Social user since last year.

Another reason he’s back could be Meta’s handling of Trump’s initial suspension, which it quickly extended from a 24-hour ban to an “indefinite” suspension. It was heavily criticized, even by its own Oversight Board, which chastised Meta for not following its own rules and trying to “avoid its responsibilities.” Trump was initially booted from Facebook for publicly praising the rioters in the aftermath of the attack on the US Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

Nigerians are barred from entering the US because they are ‘undermining’ democracy.

0

The United States government has announced a visa ban on some unnamed Nigerians “for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election”.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the action as a reflection of his government’s “commitment to supporting Nigeria’s aspiration to combat corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law” in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The senior US diplomat explained that the individuals affected will not be granted visas to enter the US, “under a policy to restrict visas of those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria”.

He also stated that these restrictions may apply to their family members.

“Additional persons who undermine the democratic process in Nigeria—including in the lead-up to, during, and following Nigeria’s 2023 elections—may be found ineligible for US visas under this policy,” the statement said further.

Mr Blinken, however, clarified that the visa ban was not targeted at the Nigerian people or the government.

It comes barely two months after the political counsellor at the US embassy in Nigeria, Rolf Olson, made a similar statement.

In the lead-up to the Edo and Ondo governorship polls of 19 September and 10 October 2020, the US government also announced visa restrictions on some individuals.

The country is due to hold general elections on 25 February.

I will represent the Minority’s collective goals with unwavering dedication and high integrity – Forson

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the newly appointed Minority Leader, has assured his colleagues that he will work with dedication and integrity.

He stated that he would represent the Minority’s collective goals.

The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam lawmaker praised Mr Iddrisu for “his admirable stewardship when he was granted the opportunity by our party’s leadership” in a statement following his appointment.

“It will be my duty as leader to represent our collective goals with unwavering dedication and high integrity,” he added.

He further indicated that “I am honoured and humbled to have been chosen to lead our illustrious and gallant caucus in Parliament. I thank the leadership of our party who have placed their trust and confidence in me.

“I am also deeply grateful to colleagues, the rank and file of our party and the Ghanaian people for their profound support and solidarity.”

The Minority in Parliament will be holding an emergency meeting in the House today Thursday January 26 over the removal of its leadership by the executives of their party the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This comes after the decision to change the leadership created division among the minroty caucus.

National Chairman of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia and the General Secretary Fifi Kwetey will be attending the meeting, TV3’s Parliamentary Correspondent Komla Klutse reported on Wednesday, January 25.

So far, forty-eight of the opposition lawmakers have signed a petition to the party executives to reverse their decision.

According to them, the decision is unpopular for which they want it reversed.

Some of the NDC MPs including Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed expressed shock at the decision by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to change the party’s leadership in Parliament.

The decision was made known on Tuesday, January 24 with the Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam Constituency, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, replacing Tamale South legislator Haruna Iddrisu as Minority Leader. Ellembelle’s Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah also replaces James Klutse Avedzi as Deputy Minority Leader.

Speaking on TV3‘s News 360 on Tuesday, January 24 after news on the decision broke, the Tamale Central MP said there was no consultation whatsoever with the caucus before the release.

“Every single Member of Parliament is surprised,” he said, “And I can tell you that even those who have been proposed to take leadership, some of them are surprised that such a proposal is made without even consulting them.”

He condemned the mode of communication, saying as an MP he got wind of the decision on social media like many other NDC MPs.

“That is not how things are done,” he fumed.

“The NDC is a democratic party. We have touted ourselves as the pacesetters of this democracy. The NDC gave birth to the 1992 Constitution for which reason we have all collectively agreed to chart the path of democracy.”

He, therefore, indicated that NDC should be the last to disregard democratic tenets and by making such a decision without consulting the group – or caucus – it affects, to him, smacks of disrespect.

The former Nanton MP said his experience of having been in the Sixth Parliament and even the Eighth Parliament tells him that there is active consultation between the party’s leadership and the caucus prior to such decisions.

“How do you choose leaders for a group without consulting that group?” he wondered.

“Who told you that the group will be comfortable with the people you have chosen? Now if the group were not comfortable with the people you have chosen, then that will be the beginning of a failure of that particular leadership.”

Also, Member of Parliament for Agotime Ziope,  Charles Agbeve demanded explanations into the decision.

Mr Agbeve said the NDC lawmakers were surprised following the announcement of the changes because consultations were not done on this matter.

He told TV3’s Komla Kluste in an interview that “I am flabbergastered, the news hit me because it is one of the last news I am expecting at this time, and so I am surprised.

“It took me a long time to really appreciate the news because normally, the national executives will engage the leadership of Parliament and if leadership thinks the engagements, they can’t get to a consultation, they meet the whole caucus and so, I can count countless engagements between the caucus and the national executives on all issues.

“There are issues when they come up, leadership thinks let us take some advice from the national executives and then they give the direction. So one would have thought that if there is going to be a shake-up like this, there would have been some engagements and that engagement would have watered down the shock and surprise.

“You will know there is going to be some changes here and there and then people will make inputs and suggestions but this was not done and I will like to know what went into this thinking, I will want some explanations, that will give all of us reasons to support it. ”

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the decision was taken based on the current trend of debate on national issues.

“The debates and the other discussions will focus on the economy so you need to put your best man in the economy forward, that is what we have done,” he told Accra-based Joy FM.

“We also looked at energy. These petroleum and electricity challenges and so we needed to settle on Kofi-Armah Buah, our former Energy Minister to be the Deputy Minority Leader and then the other area is infrastructure, Kwame Agbodza being our man in infrastructure should play a key role. So that generally is what informed the changes.”

Hola Browser: Hola provides Ghanaians with free internet access around the world.

0

The Hola Browser, which includes a peer-to-peer virtual private network (VPN), was officially launched in Ghana this week. Hola promises internet users in the country the freedom to explore the online world indefinitely and for free.

Hola is available on a variety of platforms and devices, enabling over 259 million registered users from over 190 countries to access almost any website and enjoy their favourite movies, TV shows, games, and more.

“We believe in fully democratised access to the internet and all of its content,” says Avi Raz Cohen, General Manager at Hola. “That’s as true for Ghanaians – whether they’re accessing international content or continent from home when they’re abroad – as it is for anyone else around the world. As a result, we look forward to growing our presence in Ghana and building our user base in one of Africa’s most exciting and innovative digital markets.”

Already home to a vibrant technology and startup sector, Ghana’s online population is poised to grow significantly shortly. Currently, at 53%, internet penetration in Ghana is expected to rise to more than 66% by 2026. According to Statista, average download speeds in Ghana increased from 2.3Mbps in 2017 to 11.24Mbps in 2022.

“Given the potential freedom available to both new and existing Ghanaian internet users thanks to those increased speeds, they must be able to make the most of it,” says Raz Cohen. “That means giving them access to as much of the internet as possible, regardless of where they may be. The internet always brings people together. But can do that much better if it’s open and free to all.”

As well as its ground-breaking browser, Hola is also available in Freemium form as a browser extension for all major browsers, as a Windows and MacOS app, and as an app on Android and iOS, consoles, and a broad selection of intelligent devices, including smart TVs.

LeBron James debuted a custom Liverpool jersey ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA game.

0
  • James wore custom Liverpool kit
  • NBA star has minority stake in FSG
  • Jersey hints at new collaboration

WHAT HAPPENED? The unique design, uploaded to both the Lakers and Liverpool Instagram accounts, revealed a new collaboration between the two parties, as James also wore Liverpool-styled Air Max 1s on his arrival at the Crypto.com Arena. The pictures suggest a unique range of clothing could be in the offing, although there is no news as to when it will be available to the general public.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Lebron’s relationship with Liverpool began in 2011 when he bought shares in the club worth around £4.7m ($5.8m), before he acquired a minority stake in Fenway Sports Group in March 2021. The NBA legend is largely credited for Liverpool’s switch to American sports brand Nike in 2020 following a five-year deal with New Balance, and his influence has helped propel the Reds’ appeal in the US market.

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL? While the new kit remains under wraps for the time being, Jurgen Klopp’s side travel to Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.

Xavi believes that ‘Lethal’ Dembele has finally’matured’ at Barcelona and is now one of the best in the world.

0
  • Barcelona edged Sociedad 1-0
  • Dembele scored the winner
  • Xavi impressed with the forward

WHAT HAPPENED? The French forward put in a masterclass during Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Sociedad in Wednesday’s quarter-final clash. Dembele sprinted down the right channel and ran onto a perfectly weighted pass from Jules Kounde before beating Alex Remiro at his near post to score what turned out to be the winning goal for Barca after 52 minutes. It was his third goal in six games for the Liga leaders and Xavi has insisted that he has finally “matured” to become the difference-maker in crunch matches.

WHAT THEY SAID: “I think Dembele has matured a lot since we took over. We have just given him the tools. He is lethal. We always say when he comes inside, he has to shoot more because he has that quality and he can make the difference in games,” Xavi told reporters after the match.

“You see the faces of the full-backs, they suffer. We have just given him confidence. He has so much potential. I believe in him. I think a lot of this comes down to making the right decisions. He is also enjoying himself and the fans are enjoying him.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Dembele has rediscovered his best form under Xavi this season, amassing a total of eight goals and seven assists in 27 appearances. Earlier in January, he stole the limelight with a fine strike against Atletico Madrid, and now appears to have put his past injury troubles firmly behind him. “I am delighted for him because he is a good guy and a good professional. He has turned things around and that is not easy at Barca,” Xavi added. “He’s the one full of confidence and quality. We try to guide him. For me, he is one of the best in the world in his position. He has so much quality, but from there you have to believe in yourself. At Barca, it’s important to have that mentality to believe that you can influence games.”
