He said areas such as health, education, road network, sanitation among others, which would help to transform the lives of the people would record improvement.

He therefore called on the people to continue to rally behind the District Assembly and the MCE to initiate and implement programmes and projects to speed up the development process.

The Chairman also appealed to them to honour their tax obligations and to be law abiding, to ensure the speedy development of the area.

Mr Kofie who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency called on the Assembly Members to throw their unflinching support to the MCE to continue with the good works to promote the socio-economic transformation of the area.

He stated that the constituency executives and all supporters of the party would support the MCE now that he was confirmed to spearhead the development agenda of the Government and for the good of the Municipality.

He urged the newly confirmed MCE, Mr Agyare to initiate self-help development projects to complement Government efforts to reduce poverty and appealed to him to ensure that educational facilities in the area were upgraded in his tenure as MCE.

Mr Kofie expressed gratitude to President Nana Akufo-Addo for appointing Mr Agyare to serve in his second term in office as President and pledged to work hard to consolidate the gains so far.

Public support for unconstitutional regime changes creates serious dilemmas – Chambas

Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Ghanaian international diplomat, says public support for coup d’état creates serious dilemmas, complicating the enforcement of regional norms relating to democracy and good governance.

Dr Chambas, former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), said recent cases of coup d’état, as in Mali and Guinea, were particularly troubling as they had tended to win the support of many Malian and Guinean citizens.

He said more proactive interventions that prevented constitutional crises and obviates the need for sanctions, was a critical way out of such dilemmas, adding that “this, in turn, demands more proactive engagement, facilitated through dialogue and mediation.”

Dr Chambas said this in his virtual keynote address at “A Regional Workshop on Building Infrastructures for Peace in West Africa” in Freetown, Sierre Leone.

The workshop is being by organised by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) with the generous support of the Government of Denmark and in partnership with the National Early Warning and Response Mechanism Coordinating Centre, and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in Sierra Leone.

It brought together participants from Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Ivory Coast and Senegal.

“Just at a time when many thought coup d’état – as a means of gaining access to the political centre – had become a thing of the past in West Africa, military adventurism in politics and unconstitutional regime changes seem to be creeping back into the political arena of some states in the sub region,” Dr Chambas stated.

He said the resurgence of military interventions sent very bad signals with serious potential for democratic reversals across the region.

“Although the sources of insecurity in West Africa are diverse and multiple, it is the activities of extremist movements that are generating the most devastating outcomes,” he said.

“Currently, many countries in the Sahel region are experiencing an increase in violent extremist activities, particularly in the Liptako-Gourma region, which borders Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.”

He said territories already threatened by violent extremism had seen an intensification in deadly attacks in recent times carried out mainly by the al-Qaeda-linked Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), Islamic State in the Greater Sahel (ISGS) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWP) while Boko Haram continued its attacks in Northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin area.

He noted that the threat of violent extremism was ultimately embedded in structural violence and the crisis of state capacity weakness.

Dr Chambas said in some instances, extremist groups had emerged in response to and influenced by varied and multiple domestic contexts and issues often embedded in state-society relations.

He said the absence of state presence in many “ungoverned” spaces, marginalization and discrimination against peripheral communities, failure to provide basic socio-economic infrastructure such as education, health and water created a fertile ground for radicalisation.

He said that prompted the immediate question of how to facilitate effective processes of dialogue with actors whose modus operandi was increasingly shrinking the space for negotiation and mediation.

Major General Francis Ofori, Commandant, KAIPTC, said the Centre would continue to support efforts towards building sustainable peace on the African continent through pragmatic research, and capacity building programmes.

Dr Emmanuel Gaima, Governance Adviser, Government of Sierra Leone, said his country was now among countries that had established an infrastructure for peace.

Mr Tom Nørring, Danish Ambassador to Ghana, said the workshop offered a platform for sharing experiences and ideas in the field of conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Dr Onyinye Onwuka, Head of Mediation and Coordination of Regional Political Affairs, ECOWAS Commission, said the increasing spate of election-related disputes and violence, inter-communal conflicts, the recent blight of terrorism in the ECOWAS region and the resurgence of coup d’états had more than ever before reaffirmed the need to rethink their response mechanisms and systems, as they strove to promote peace and strengthen social, communal and national cohesion across the region.

President Museveni: Africa must focus on politics of interest not identity

0

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has urged African political leaders and the African people in general to shun the politics of identity that characterized most of the post-independence Africa.

He said politics of identity that was mostly based on tribes and religions were counterproductive, diversionary, and led to the emergency of many failed states in post-independence Africa.

President Museveni stated on Monday at Addis-Ababa, Ethiopian in an addressed to mark the inauguration of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for a new five-year term, which has been made available to the Ghana News Agency in Tema, through Ms Catherine Ageno, a Uganda Communication Officer.

The inauguration was climaxed with a mammoth rally of Ethiopian people that was also attended by many other African leaders.

The Uganda President who made the opening remarks for the Heads of States and Government, said as an observer of African politics for the last 60 years, “I have identified politics of identity especially of tribes and religions as one that greatly affected democratic and political progress of many African countries.

“It also hindered the continent’s social economic transformation and development”.

He called upon the people of Ethiopia and the African continent in general to do away with politics of identity and focus on politics of interest and support leaders based on their political agenda as opposed to their tribes or religious affiliations.

“I have been observing and participating in African politics for 60 years and politics of identity especially of tribes and religions have caused many problems to many African countries including Uganda.

“Uganda just came up after we had shunned politics of identity and substituted it with politics of interest and I would encourage Ethiopians to always remember that,” President Museveni said.

President Museveni commended the people of Ethiopia for conducting a credible democratic election and congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for being given the new five-year mandate to serve his people and country.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promised to work and bring about total peace for all Ethiopians especially by ending the war in the Tigray region, which he said had made Ethiopia pay a “heavy price”.

He pledged to work with all peace-loving Ethiopian to bring about peace and prosperity for all Ethiopians.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had earlier in the morning taken the oath of office at Parliament administered by the Supreme Court Chief justice Meaza Ashenafi.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended and addressed by Presidents of Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti and South Sudan as well as delegations from several African countries and representatives of the international community.

The Territorial Commander for the Salvation Army- Ghana Territory, has admonished students to exhibit traits of submissiveness, selflessness and studiousness against the “operation chew, pour, pass and forget” mantra professed by students for rote learning.

The Commander, Colonel Samuel Amponsah, who made the call, said a disciplined student studied hard to grab the impact of subjects’ theories taught in school and was able to reproduce what was studied through critical thinking and analysis.

Rote learning, he said, affected their careers in later years as they forget all that had been learnt in school.

He gave the advice during the induction service of Mr Isaac Owusu Agyeman, the Headmaster of Salvation Army Senior High School- Akyem Wenchi.

To the staff, Colonel Amponsah, urged the headmaster, teaching and non-teaching staff, to work collectively and professionally to uplift the disciplinary and academic standards of the school.

He pledged the Salvation Army’s support to the school in its structural development.

The headmaster, a result-oriented person, called on stakeholders to support his five pillars dream to improve the school and Community relationship, seek the welfare of the staff and students.

He also seeks to maintain and use the assets and resources to the benefit of the school, improve the general discipline of the school and academic performance.

Mr Thomas More Mensah Tsorhe, District Director of Education, Denkyembour District, said the Directorate will support the headmaster to achieve the five pillars and described Mr Agyeman as very assertive with good communication and leadership skills.

The Salvation Army Senior High School was established in 1991 with 12 students and by 2021, it had its population increased to about 1,446 with 63 teaching staff and 39 non-teaching staff.

Ghana Shippers Award must recognize key stakeholders – Importers and Exporters

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has called on the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) to recognize the contributions of key stakeholders in its annual Ghana Shippers Awards.

Mr Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency said, the association had over the years observed that the awards ceremony did not recognize their contributions to the sector.

The awards ceremony, which took place on Friday, October 1, 2021 awarded organizations and individuals in categories which included best trade facilitation organization, excellence in innovation and technology company, container line of the year, international express operator, break bulk operator, air fright solutions provider and sea freight solutions.

Other categories were project/heavy lift forwarder, road haulier, air cargo carrier, life time achievement, shipping line operator, freight forwarder of the year, maritime institution, and reporter of the year among others.

Mr Awingobit said though past and present award recipients are commended, “our resentment has to do with the disrespect exhibited towards key stakeholders such as Importers and Exporters by the Ghana Shippers Authority for years.

“It is unfortunate to note that, not a single member or organization within the import and export community were awarded for their sterling and outstanding performance at this year’s shippers Awards, which took place over the weekend,” he said.

He expressed regret that since the inception of the award, the GSA had failed in it awards scheme to honour or award importers and exporters, or key traders within the various associations such as the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Food and Beverages Association Ghana, as well as the Traders Advocacy Group (FAG).

He said “even though these stakeholders contribute largely to the operations of the Shippers Authority.”

“Though we are told some companies belonging to an association like the Food and Beverages Association Ghana were awarded, it would interest the public to note that, not even the leadership of the association were informed of the criteria used to select the said companies or factored into the selection process.

“None of the leadership of these import and export associations were even given an invitation to support its members who were awarded at the event over the weekend.”

“This treatment is a clear indication that, importers and exporters are only regarded by the Authority as an avenue for money making, but not befitting to be acknowledged for their contributions and the critical role they play in the existence and operations of the Authority,” he said.

He therefore called on GSA to acknowledge the association members who were over-deserving to be given the needed acknowledgement and honour in its subsequent events.

He pointed out that the Western Regional branch had one of the best client services in the country, and for that matter clients should resort to professionals to deal with their challenges for prompt and adequate feedback, instead of resorting to third parties.

Mr Hassan, who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the launch of its Customer Service Week in Takoradi, urged the customers to patronize the rejuvenated regional client department for effective customer service.

“Initially, we had a situation where people come to our office to complain about DVLA officials taking money from them, but after thorough research we realized that clients have resorted to dealing with third parties. I will urge our clients to visit our Client Service Department to present their concerns,” he said.

He announced that the branch had undergone some major transformation and lauded the current Regional Manager for his effort towards the reconstruction of the new office and the introduction of a queue management system (QMS), which had enhanced the day-to-day serving of clients.

According to him, only the Takoradi office of the DVLA in the country had a queue system, a system which had prevented people from being duped and commended the I.T. and the Client Service Department for their efforts toward the transformation.

He appreciated all stakeholders including the MTTD, insurance companies, the Ghana Drives Union and advised the general public to always ensure that they resorted to the client service department any time they needed any information.

Mr Hassan also appealed to stakeholders who experienced delays in the cause of waiting for their licenses to exercise restraint and bear with the authorities as the institution worked towards facilitating the process of securing licenses.

“Some of the circumstances are beyond our control so bear with us,” he pointed out.

The Client Service Week used to be celebrated solely in the Head Office of the DVLA in Accra but over the last two years, it has been extended to the regions and districts levels.

Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, a Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Presidential hopeful, will set-up an insurance scheme for journalists to provide protection for them against any misfortune.

He noted that the insurance scheme would cover health, funeral, accidents and all the basic things that confront journalists as they must be protected, secured, and need to plan for a better future.

“We got three proposals from life insurance companies and vehicle insurance companies for consideration,” he stated at the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office and the Tema Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service Road Crashes Prevention Campaign platform.

The GNA Road Safety Campaign, which sought to create consistent and systematic weekly advocacy, is aimed at providing continuous education to stakeholders on the need to be cautious on the road and adhere to all road safety regulations.

Mr Dwumfour noted that the safety of our members cannot be left in the hands of media owners because there was no law binding them and therefore the association would facilitate acquisition of vehicles for individuals and media houses to and from program to avoid rush with its attendant consequences.

Speaking on the campaign to annex the leadership of the GJA, he noted that, the association must be able to capitalize on its social network to draw revenue and under his leadership, there would be appealing programmes rolled out to woo support from donor agencies and corporate partners in order to generate revenue for the Association.

Mr Dwumfour promised that a one million Retiree Fund would be established to cater for the welfare of retired journalists.

“So we are going to form a committee to compile a data base for retirees or meet the retirees and regularize the membership of those who were not even members of the Association,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour assured journalists of his unwavering commitment to bring a total transformation at the GJA and make it more attractive and beneficial to all journalists devoid of discrimination.

He intimated that there will be professional development of journalists, that is a deliberate effort to have monthly or quarterly training for journalists in specific areas in order to build on the capacity of journalists in their area of specialization.
