Money is insufficient to avert floods; behavioural change is required – Annoh-Dompreh

Date:

According to the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, no amount of financing would be sufficient to ameliorate the impact of floods in the country until attitudes change.

This comes after the Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, asked Parliament to consider providing sections of the road fund, sanitation charge, and common fund to his ministry in order for it to carry out its mandate effectively.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), eight people died as a result of floods caused by torrential rains last week.

In an update on the government’s efforts to solve the recurring issue, Francis Asenso-Boakye advocated for a specific money to address the issue.

The Majority Chief Whip, on the other hand, stated, “Our attitude about the way we build is awful.” Some of our people live on rivers, which all contribute to floods. We can’t pretend like that. Yeah, the financing issue is correct and fair, but we must also recognise that there will never be enough finances.”

“However, what I agree with is the point that what is due, especially with the statutory payments, must be dispensed. We will implore the minister [of finance] that, for us to save lives and properties and probably minimize these issues, we should be seen to be doing incremental releases. We shouldn’t sit for the arrears to become huge, and then we go and scratch the surface. We want to implore the minister of finance that we should pay more attention to flooding needs.”

On attitudinal change, the Majority Chief Whip called for an all-hands-on-deck approach.

“We should speak about people pouring plastic waste into waterways.”
