The number of fatalities increases due to flooding in Kenya while ongoing evacuations persist.

Date:

In the wake of heavy rains, devastating floods have claimed the lives of at least 179 individuals in Kenya, including 15 children, as reported by the Government spokesman on Wednesday.

Isaac Mwaura highlighted that April marked the peak of the March-April-May (MAM) long rains, except for the Coastal region, where the peak is expected in May.

The relentless downpours and resulting floods have displaced 195,011 people, prompting the government to provide shelter in schools or establish displacement camps.

Emphasizing the government’s stance, the spokesperson reiterated the cabinet’s directive for residents in flood-prone areas, identified as fragile ecosystems, to evacuate within the 48-hour notice previously issued.

In response, efforts involving the Kenya Defence Forces have intensified for recovery and evacuation operations.

Meanwhile, the distribution of essential supplies continues nationwide to aid affected communities.
