The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has visited displaced residents and mourned with bereaved families who lost their relatives and properties to recent torrential rains in the Upper East Region.
The Vice President on behalf of government, presented fifty thousand Ghana cedis to the displaced victims and also assured them of relief items.
Over 26, 000 people are reported to have been displaced with about 19 people injured.
According to the National Disaster Management Organization, (NADMO), over 19 people are also said to have died as a result of flooding related incidents including drowning and electrocution.
Even though some displaced residents of the disaster have started receiving relief items from NADMO, the Vice president’s visit was to reassure the affected people of the government’s support and concern of their plight.
The Vice President and his entourage first point of call was at Mayoro in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality where over hundred residents in the area have been displaced and are currently seeking shelter in classrooms.
In his welcome address, the Divisional Chief of Mayoro, Pe Dr. Atudiwe Atupaare Pwakweah manchi, described the visit by the Vice president as timely and historic.
Addressing the displaced victims, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, cautioned persons who still live in defective buildings to fix them or try to avoid them due to the potential of the building collapsing.
He assured them of government’s support and concern about their plight.
The Vice President and his entourage last point of call was at the Tono Irrigation Dam to access the extent damage caused by the torrential rains.
The Retaining walls of the dam and the base floor have collapsed as a result of the torrential rains.
Dr. Bawumia said government will make sure the retaining walls of the spill way and other defects of the dam are fixed before the next raining season.
The Vice President was accompanied by the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Ada, Northern Regional Minister doubles as the Acting Upper East Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, the Director General of NADMO, Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh among others.
