Takoradi Poultry farmers laud Government interest in poultry production

0

The initiative by the government to boost the poultry industry with day old chicks and other supplies have been welcomed by a section of poultry farmers within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan area.

The farmers in an interview with the Ghana News Agency noted how critical the poultry industry could halt the spate of unemployment among the youth should proper investment and attention by policy makers was given to the sector.

Ghana spends millions of dollars annually to import frozen chicken into the country, an occurrence that could be avoided and investment retained in-country for growth, Madam Julia Arthur of Premier Poultry Limited lamented.

She said, “I will say that the government project or programme for poultry is a laudable idea, research suggests that the country spends millions of dollars on imports of frozen chicken. This is because frozen chicken is cheaper and so there is high demand.”

Madam Arthur noted that the government must not just supply the chicks but also put in place mechanism and a policy to ensure that local feeds were available all year round.

She said: “the success of this programme on poultry basically would thrive on two indicators which are, feed industry programme and consumption of Ghana grown poultry meat.

“Should they have it right on the feed industry programme with good policy, it will help cut down the cost of production of poultry farming, since per research and field experience high cost of feed is a challenge to a lot of poultry farmers.”

Also, the high cost of production has negatively affected the sector and the end product on the market.

She said she believed that when the feed cost was moderate, there would be demand and also a rippling effect on the made in Ghana poultry project while, making poultry farming a lucrative venture.

Madam Comfort Akyin, a trader of local poultry products, on her part, said she was looking forward to a real change in the poultry sector.

Ghana Developing Communities Association commends Local Government Minister’s commitment to DACF timely release

0

The Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA), an NGO, has welcomed and commended the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, for his commitment towards ensuring timely release of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and other governance issues.

It said the commitment was a crucial step in promoting accountability, transparency and effective service delivery at the local level, which aligned with the GDCA’s shared vision of fostering sustainable community development.

The commendation was in a statement issued by the GDCA signed by Alhaji Osman Abdel-Rahman, Executive Director, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Wednesday,

During his vetting by the Appointments’ Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Mr Ibrahim highlighted how delayed releases of the DACF affected development and also electoral chances of successive governments.

He then pledged to work closely with the incoming Administrator of the DACF, the Minister of Finance and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Governance to ensure timely release of the DACF to resource the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to work.

The DACF remains a critical tool for addressing pressing local needs, including development projects and social protection interventions.

However, over the years, there have been delays in the release of the DACF to the MMDAs, which disrupt the effective delivery of services and undermine the developmental aspirations of MMDAs across the country.

The statement said, “We believe that the Minister’s commitment will provide the necessary momentum for improving fiscal decentralisation and ensuring that no community is left behind in the pursuit of national development.”

It said, “As an organisation committed to empowering communities, we are optimistic that the Minister’s leadership will drive positive change, strengthen local governance and enhance collaboration amongst stakeholders.”

It urged the Minister to operationalise his commitment by working closely with relevant institutions to address bottlenecks in the disbursement process of the DACF.

It also urged the government to come out with a formula to ensure equitable allocation of the DACF as such formula would transfer a higher share of DACF to poorer districts to support their development agenda.

The statement said, “We also appreciate the Minister’s focus on enhancing the functionality of District Audit Committees to address infractions in the auditing of MMDAs’ accounts.

We believe that efficient utilisation of resources at the MMDAs is a critical step towards sustainable development and effective local governance.”

It assured that “GDCA stands ready to support your efforts in any way we can to ensure that these initiatives yield meaningful outcomes for the good people of Ghana.”

The Inland Chief Fishermen, Queen Processors and Traders Council in the Oti Region, has appealed to the government to appoint a deputy minister for fisheries and aquaculture development from the inland region.

This move, the Council hope, would help promote the development of the inland fisheries sector and address the unique challenges faced by inland fishermen.

The Council speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), noted that appointing Mr. Geoffrey Kini, Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkwanta South, would be ideal, adding that the MP had a deep understanding of inland fisheries sector and the challenges they faced.

Mr. Akpaglo Nyameko, President of the Council, emphasized that the appointment of a deputy minister from the inland region would provide a much needed voice for inland fishermen.

He said it would also help to address the specific challenges faced by the sector, including limited access to markets, inadequate infrastructure and unsustainable fishing practices.

Queenmother Olivia Ayittey, appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to address the pressing concerns of her communities, especially the issue of premix fuel, lamenting that her people have been denied access to such an essential resource, which was crucial for their fishing and processing activities.

The queenmother emphasized the need for President Mahama to appoint someone with expertise in fisheries and aquaculture development to help accelerate their work.

The move, she believed would greatly benefit her community members and ensure their livelihoods were protected.

Togbe Dordoe III, Ewe Chief on Chonke land and leader of inland chief fishermen, said the Oti region is home to several major water bodies, including the Volta Lake, which provides livelihoods for thousands of fishermen. However, the region’s fisheries sector faced numerous challenges, including overfishing and climate change impact.

Togbe Dordoe said appointment of a deputy minister for fisheries and aquaculture development from the inland region would be a significant step towards in addressing those challenges.

The chief told GNA that it would also demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting the development of the inland fisheries sector and improving the livelihoods of inland fishermen.

David Beckham reveals Lionel Messi’s Barcelona homecoming plan with Inter Miami co-owner resigned to watching eight-time Ballon d’Or winner depart Florida

0

David Beckham has disclosed Lionel Messi’s Barcelona comeback plan, with Inter Miami resigned to losing the Argentine superstar at some moment.

“Leo and I will sit down to discuss the future. I fully expect that when our new stadium opens in 2026, Leo Messi will be our number 10,” Herons co-owner Jorge Mas said of those talks. The MLS team, which let Messi leave in 2023 to pursue the American dream, has their lucky captain signed to a contract through 2025, with the option for a 12-month extension that would include the next World Cup finals.

Messi has, however, never hidden the fact that he intends to retrace steps to Barcelona once his record-setting career comes to a close. Beckham concedes that Florida will be bidding farewell to the Argentine GOAT, with the Manchester United legend saying at the Economic Forum in Davos: “I would like Messi to live in Miami when he retires, but Leo told me that he only thinks about living near the Camp Nou. There is no player who loves Barcelona as much as he does. You can see the Barca crest on his leg and even on his water bottle.”

Messi still considers Catalunya to be home and wants to return to that part of the world with wife Antonela and their three sons once retirement is reached. He does, however, still have plenty to achieve in the United States prior to that.

Beckham added on working with Messi and Inter Miami’s ambitious plans: “I have always believed in potential. You know, the United States is a powerful country, one of the biggest countries with the best opportunities and you believe in that. When I moved to the United States, I knew it was a land of opportunity. I knew I wanted to live in the United States at some point and create a business like the one we have done. Now I sit in my chair, in Miami, in that stadium and Leo walks onto the field and I think ‘I’m very proud of that’.”

Ruben Amorim should “banish” Marcus Rashford from the Manchester United dressing room, according to Paul Scholes, as the wantaway striker is accused of “letting a lot of people down.”

0

Legendary Manchester United player Paul Scholes has urged Ruben Amorim to “banish” Marcus Rashford, a wanted forward, from the locker room.

After the team’s victory over Fulham last weekend, the manager made a go at Rashford, so the former England and United midfielder supported Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach questioned the striker’s efforts on the training ground and stated that he would prefer to play United’s 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital over Rashford right now.

Sharing his opinion on Rashford’s situation, Scholes said on The Overlap Fan Debate brought to you by Sky Bet: “I think Marcus has let a lot of people down really, with his attitude, and I think that’s what the manager is trying to say. You think of the young players coming through the team, think of (Alejandro) Garnacho, they’re looking up to people like Marcus now – he’s 27 years of age, and he’s clearly not training properly.

“I remember years ago when I told the manager (Sir Alex Ferguson) I didn’t want to play in that Arsenal game… he said to me ‘the worst thing you did is let your team-mates down’, and that really stuck with me because I wasn’t really thinking about that – and now I think Marcus Rashford, he’s doing exactly the same.”

He added: “OK, he’s not refusing to play, but in the way he’s behaving and the way he’s training, in a way he is saying I don’t want to be involved with these. So I think the fact of letting your team-mates down in that dressing room – he should be banished from the dressing room really. If he’s in and around that and young people are seeing that as an example, the sooner he’s gone the better.”

The 27-year-old attacker, who has not featured for the Red Devils since December 12 and has expressed a desire to take on a “new challenge”, is being strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford before the winter transfer window slams shut. Barcelona could be a possible destination for Rashford, with the La Liga giants reportedly keen on signing him on loan.

Amorim’s side, who have won their last two matches against Rangers and Fulham, will be next seen in action on Thursday against FCSB in the Europa League, with Rashford likely to miss out on game time once again.
