[Angola] Banco Atlântico unveils first digital laboratory

0

The first digital laboratory in Angola, to promote an ecosystem of fostering entrepreneurship and digital innovation, has been unveiled by the President of the Executive Committee (PCE) of the Atlantic Bank, Daniel Santos.

The technological initiative is part of a strategy called “Disruption Lab”, focused on transformation, innovation and digitization, whose main objective is to aggregate skills from universities, national and international financial institutions and Startechs – small initiatives of entrepreneurship in the technological field.

The Disruption Lab (Powered by Atlântico) was created in August 2018 to lead the digital information efforts of Millenium Atlantic Bank, in which they have fulfilled this intention with participation in debates, fairs, among other events.

Speaking to the press, the national director for Technological Development and Information of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Jone Heitor, announced that in the country, in some universities, small digital laboratories are already functioning, where students are testing their knowledge .

He pointed out that the Government is creating policies to support Startechs and Incubators, existing in the country, in order to create many more initiatives in a period of five years.

For the PCE of Banco Millenium Atlântico, Daniel Santos, the bet in the digital laboratory has to do with being a technological vehicle that is currently widely used in the industry worldwide and particularly in banking.

He said that in his institution there are digital services available that have allowed to attract many customers.

Disruption Lab is a strategy 2.1 focused on transformation, innovation and digitization, in order to achieve the purpose of organizing multidisciplinary teams formed by collaborators and partners of the startech ecosystem.

Holders Cameroon to face Nigeria as Ghana pinch top spot

0

Defending Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon will meet Nigeria in a clash of continental giants in the last 16 after Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Benin allowed Ghana to finish top of Group F.

Cameroon stuttered to a second goalless stalemate in succession as Ghana, who drew their opening two games, beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to finish ahead of the holders on goals scored.

The Black Stars will take on the runners-up from Group E, where all four teams remain in contention, for a place in the quarter-finals while Benin scraped through as one of the best third-place sides.

Saturnin Allagbe replaced Fabien Farnolle in goal for Benin and produced fine saves to deny Ambroise Oyongo and Cameroon captain Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting but the Indomitable Lions again looked worryingly blunt in attack.

Clarence Seedorf’s side have scored just twice in Egypt, in the opening 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, and their path to retaining the title grew increasingly more difficult with a wounded Nigeria now awaiting them in the next round and hosts Egypt likely facing the winner of that tie.

Jordan Ayew struck for the second time in three matches in the group’s other game in Suez as Ghana sent Guinea-Bissau home without a point or a goal.

Richard Ofori made a sharp stop to prevent former Liverpool youth team forward Toni Silva giving Guinea-Bissau a shock lead but Ayew, who endured a miserable season at Crystal Palace, has rediscovered his form for his country.

Ayew collected a ball down the left-hand side right at the start of the second half and ran towards goal as the defence backed off before picking out the corner of the net.

Mamadu Cande rattled the woodwork for Guinea-Bissau while Ayew twice hit the post for Ghana before Thomas Partey slid in to convert Baba Rahman’s cross 20 minutes from time to send the four-time champions through as group winners.

Trump, producer-president, makes July 4th his own show

0

Tanks in the center of Washington, fighter jets screaming overhead, and a speech from the Lincoln Memorial steps: welcome to President Donald Trump’s tradition-wrecking Fourth of July.

Trump may be commander in chief but he’s also head showman and on Thursday he’ll turn Independence Day into a personal primetime extravaganza.

Usually, said Rich Hanley, a media and popular culture expert at Quinnipiac University, July 4th works as a kind of national “ceasefire.”

“It’s a day when people can set aside their polarized differences … and raise the flag without entering into political discussions,” he said. “Then on the 5th they go back to normal.”

But this year, the familiar script is being given a rewrite.

At around 6:30 pm (2230 GMT), Trump will take to the hallowed steps of the Lincoln Memorial for an unprecedented “Salute to America” event that will include a televised address, military hardware and a giant fireworks display.

The modified Boeing 747 used as Air Force One will fly over, as will noisy, powerful warplanes expected to include F-35s, and jets from the Navy’s Blue Angels air demonstration team.

A handful of tanks and fighting vehicles will be stationed in the vicinity, even if the enormous machines are not expected to roll, as their tracks would likely tear up city streets.

The center of attention, however, will not be the weapons. Or the fireworks.

It will be Trump.

“Your favorite President, me!” as he tweeted when announcing the occasion.

US President Donald Trump may see thunderstorms — and political turmoil — during his July 4th patriotic event

July 4th is a unique holiday in that it is hyper-patriotic but free from usual Republican-Democratic fighting and it’s far more civic than military in nature.

Inserting such a high-profile presidential address into the festivities risks changing that, given that Trump is supported strongly by about half the country ahead of his 2020 reelection bid and equally fervently opposed by the other half.

Trump insists he can bridge the divide when he speaks.

“I think so. I think I’ve reached most Americans,” he told reporters this week.

However, seconds later, the Republican plunged into his usual blistering critique of Democrats, claiming they would tax everyone at 95 percent and “destroy” the country with socialized healthcare.

Counter-protestors plan to bring their own kind of political fireworks to the National Mall, the grassy park running all the way from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol.

Leftist organization Code Pink is deploying its “Baby Trump” blimp, a large inflated doll depicting the president in nappies.

And two veterans’ groups plan to needle Trump by handing out T-shirts honoring the late senator John McCain, a Republican who often clashed with Trump.

– Salesman, showman, president –

A former reality TV star, Trump is tapping his considerable showmanship skills ahead of the event.

“The strongest and most advanced Military anywhere in the World. Incredible Flyovers & biggest ever Fireworks!” he tweeted Tuesday in what sounded like a circus advertisement.

President Donald Trump is a big fan of the annual Bastille Day military parade in Paris

Just being up on the Lincoln Memorial will guarantee unbeatable pictures.

The statue honoring civil war president Abraham Lincoln is famous as the location for Martin Luther King Jr’s epic 1963 “I have a dream” speech.

But Trump’s inspiration appears to be taken less from that civil rights cry than the Bastille Day military parade he attended in 2017 as a guest of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Impressed by the impeccably turned out French soldiers and equipment in the center of Paris, Trump returned, joking “we’re going to have to try to top it.”

His idea was to put on a major extravaganza for Veteran’s Day, which is marked November 11, but an outcry over the almost $100 million price tag meant it had to be scrapped.

This Thursday, he’ll get a scaled-back version.

And only political grumbling — and thunderstorms forecast that afternoon — can rain on his parade.

Parliament asks Government to address energy sector debts

0

Parliament has called on the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Energy, Mr John Peter Amewu to as a matter of urgency,  activate the cash waterfall scheme and other prudent measures to address the debt accumulation in the energy sector.

The lawmakers further called on the Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori Atta to conduct an audit to determine the level of indebtedness among the State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the Energy Sector.

Moreover, the legislators urged the Minister of Finance to consider issuing a new bond to finance the remaining legacy debts in the Energy Sector.

Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chairman of the Finance Committee whilst presenting a Report of the Finance Committee of Parliament expressed the need to address the growing indebtedness in the sector in order to avert any potential power crisis.

Parliament on Tuesday, approved the Annual Report on the management of the energy sector levies and accounts for the year 2018.

The purpose of the Annual Report is to inform Parliament on the Management and use-of the funds realized from the imposition of the levies under Act899.

The Energy Sector Levies Act, 2015 (Act899) as amended in 2017 (Act946), was promulgated in 2015 to address the huge burden and operational challenges facing SOEs in the Energy Sector, support power generation and power supply, subsidize premix and stabilized petroleum prices, support road maintenance as well as fund the activities of the Energy Commission.

To achieve these objects, Act 899 imposed a number of levies namely the Energy Debt Recovery Levy (EDRL), Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy (PSRL), Road Fund Levy (RFL), Energy Fund Levy (EFL), Public Lighting Levy and National Electrification Scheme Levy on the prices of petrol, diesel, MGO, fuel oil, kerosene, LPG as well as electricity. The proceeds from the imposition of the levies are to pay off the huge debt in the energy sector, among others.

The lawmakers also found it unacceptable for the Finance Minister’s intervention to suspend the PSRL without due process to Parliament.

Dr Assibey-Yeboah said the measure might be laudable in order to provide some relief for Ghanaians in the face of escalating petroleum prices at the pumps at the time.

The Committee subsequently urged the Minister of Finance to follow due process by coming to Parliament to get any section of the law amended, thereby upholding the rule of law.

Dr Assibey-Yeboah also observed that an amount of GHC3, 190,738,564.82 was collected as levies for the period as against a programmed collection of GHC 3, 507,036,778.77. This resulted in a shortfall in collection of GHC 316, 298,213.98 representing a 9.2 percent shortfall.

He said at the end of 2018, the Energy Debt Recovery Levy (EDRL), Road Fund Levy and Energy Fund Levy  outperformed their targets by 7.9 percent, 0.72 percent and 7.29 percent respectively.

He said the positive performance of the levies was on account of 11.79 percent increase in consumption volumes in 2018 compared with the same period in 2017.

Mr John Jinapor, Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei Kusugwu, in his comment expressed concern about the mounting indebtedness in the country’s energy sector.

He urged the government to take careful measures to address the debt accumulation, saying, @if nothing is done the sector may collapse@.

He said Minister of Energy had no business to suspend the PSRL and that it was only parliament that had the power to vary a tax or levy.

Mr Anthony Effah, MP for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa in his comment on the report stated that the levies collected over the period were properly lodged into the established accounts.

He said the evidence was given by the percentages of the collections of levies that were actually lodged.

He explained that for the utilization of the energy sector levies, a significant portion of the amount went into the ESLA plc for managing the debts of energy sectors SOEs and also provided support for premix and residual fuel.

[Nigeria] Telecom investment hits $70b

0

The executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has revealed that total investments in the Nigeria telecom industry stood at $70 billion in 2018.

He made this known at the opening ceremony of the 7th Digital Africa Conference and Exhibition 2019 with the theme: “Africa’s Tech Renaissance: Positioning Africa for the Age of Abundance,” yesterday in Abuja, saying the sector contributed 9.85 per cent to the nations GDP at the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2018, adding that figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated it contributed about N1.9 trillion in the same quarter.

Danbatta represented by the Commission’s director of projects department, Mrs Abigail Sholanke, urged Africa to facilitate deeper access to telecoms and ICT services in general, especially broadband, in a way that such access translates to increased prosperity and better well-being for African people.

In his remarks, the Digital Africa chairman, Dr. Evans Woherem, said the choice of the theme was to prepare Africa for the age of abundance, stressing the need for the continent to take advantage the upcoming Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

“Currently, thanks to the exponential growth rate f technologies such as AI, big data, robotics, virtual and augmented realities, cloud computing, blockchain, machine learning etc. we are teetering on the edge of a much better tomorrow.

“Africa needs to be part of the 4 IR since we missed out on the previous great leaps in human innovation. It is time for Africa to make the right choices in order to also be able to create and enjoy abundance here in Africa and be truly a part of the world,” he added.

Earlier, the director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Dr. Isa Pantami, said the theme of this year’s conference was very apt because all developed nations were no longer talking of mineral resources but data.

“Most of the developed nation’ today are talking about digitalisation, utilising data as the new oil. That is why you see that the leading company’s today in the world are not in any way natural resources company but data and digital companies.

“Developing nations are moving from natural based resources to a knowledge-based, digital-based and the earlier we realise that in Nigeria and Africa would be better for us,” he said.
