The new song “Aseda” – a Ghanaian Ashanti word which means “Gratitude or Thanksgiving,” is simply a beautiful gospel record about the goodness of God.

It’s all praise, thanksgiving and glory-giving on the under three minutes song. Known for having super-creative instincts, writing bible-backed verses and singing soul-uplifting songs, Eric Hazael sings the first verse on “Aseda” and effortlessly allures the listener to join in on the praise session.

The chorus backed by Molato, reverberates the song’s chief leitmotif of thanksgiving and sets the groove right for a wholesome heavenly experience of glorification.

He said the latest single, “Aseda is my thanksgiving to God for not deserting me when my sin separated me from his loving embrace.”

“It shows my struggles, my victories and my sense of joy knowing I am being led unto the shining path which leads into his burning presence.”

Ghana’s oil income rises to US$840 million in the first half of 2024.

Ghana’s oil income grew to US$840 million in the first half of 2024. This figure represents a 36% rise over the US$540 million achieved during the same time in 2023.

Petroleum revenue receipts include income from oil liftings, corporation taxes, surface rental, and interest on the Petroleum Fund account.

According to the Petroleum Holding Fund report provided by the Bank of Ghana, the majority of the money came from liftings from six oil fields.

These added US$ 470 million to the overall income.

Corporate tax revenue was $350 million, surface rentals were $580,000, and interest income was $7 million.

The Ghana Petroleum Funds received the following allocations during the review period.

The Ghana Stabilization Fund received US$91 million, and the Ghana Heritage Fund received US$39 million, totalling about US$130 million.

The report, released in accordance with section 28 of the Petroleum Revenue Management Act, 2011 (Act 815), outlines details of Ghana’s crude oil liftings and the allocation to the Ghana Petroleum Funds.

As per the law, the Bank of Ghana is responsible for receiving and disbursing petroleum revenue for the country.

Herbert Krapa says TOR will shortly begin operations.

Herbert Krapa, Minister of State in the Ministry of Energy, has indicated that the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) will begin operations within the next three months.

Mr. Krapa stated that the resume date was agreed upon by TOR management. He reiterated the government’s commitment to securing TOR production, noting that a strategic partner for the refinery is being recruited and that the process would be finished shortly so that TOR may begin operations.

The Minister of State for Energy made the news in a Facebook post during a working visit to TOR and Sentuo Oil Refinery on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

In his post, Mr. Krapa stated, “Earlier today, I paid working visits to Tema Oil Refinery and Sentuo Oil Refinery. I am happy to announce that together with the Management of TOR, we agreed on a three-month timeline for the resumption of the plant.

“I also announced the government’s plan to immediately revive TOR’s Testing Laboratory for revenue generation. I charged both TOR and Sentuo to see each other as partners and collaborate for the growth of both refineries.”

During his visits, he called for the support of all stakeholders to revive the facility.

“There is no gain in saying TOR needs all our support, and attention and we all need to put our hands on deck it is for these reasons that I chose TOR to be my first official visit to the institutions that work under the ministry. I don’t think it’s late in the day.”

The facility is currently led by the Managing Director, Kofi Tagoe Mocumbi.

TOR shut down operations several years ago due to a lack of crude oil which serves as the raw material for the refinery.

Before its collapse, the refinery had the capacity to refine about 45,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

However, some stakeholders in the oil value chain are concerned that the non-operationalization of the refinery is also affecting the price of imported fuel.

The 2024 mid-year budget reflects the NPP’s imminent opposition status.

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson expressed unhappiness with the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review, claiming that it represents the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming shift to opposition.

Dr. Ato Forson’s remarks come after Finance Minister Dr. Amin Adam delivered the review on Tuesday, July 23, emphasising the government’s efforts to reverse unfavourable economic trends and reduce spending.

The minister reported a provisional total debt of GH¢742 billion (US$50.9 billion) as of June, representing 70.6% of GDP, and assured that the government is living within its budget.

However, Dr Ato Forson criticised the review for failing to abolish certain taxes, such as the COVID levy, E-levy, and emission levy, which he believes have contributed to Ghana’s high tax regime and driven businesses and citizens out of the country.

He described the review as a “missed opportunity” lacking new policies and ideas, and referenced the majority caucus jubilation song “Abamu awie”  saying they are now “on their way to opposition.”

“At the very least Ghanaians expected that this mid-year review would have removed or abolished a number of taxes that has made Ghana a high tax regime to the extent that businesses are moving out of the country and the ordinary Ghanian is actually leaving the shores of this country. For example example COVID levy, E-levy, ‘Borla’ tax, tax on domestic electricity, emission levy.”

“Mr Speaker this is a missed opportunity. Mr Speaker instead the minister did not announce one single new policy. The minister did not introduce new ideas. Mr Speaker unfortunately Ghana is on autopilot, and our economy is on autopilot…All what I want to tell them, they are bereft of new ideas and I’m happy that they sang’ abamu awie’, you are on your way to opposition.”

NPC-Ghana signs MOU with Mayor of Argenteuil

The National Paralympic Committee (NPC)-Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mr. Georges Mothron Mayor of Argenteuil-France to support Ghana Wheelchair Tennis (GWT) team.

As part of the MOU, NPC would receive assistance from Argenteuil-France for their pre-games camping ahead of the 2024 Paralympic Games.

 The GWT team is currently participating in pre-games training camp, facilitated by the NPC-Ghana with support from the Mayor of Argenteuil in France and the government of France.

Mr. Mothron said, “we are happy to host the Ghana Wheelchair Tennis team in our city; this arrangement would available to the team before, during and after the Paralympics games as an exchange between the two countries”.

Mr. Samson Deen President of the NPC-Ghana said the two-week residential training camp, which began on 15-28 July 2024 would be an intense period of preparation for the team.

He said, “the GWT team’s unwavering dedication and hard work were truly inspiring, serving as a beacon of commitment in the world of sports”.

Among the players in pre-games camping were, Bridget Nartey, Stacy Konadu Mensah, Daniel Laryea and Bernard Yawson.

Ada Queen organises health screening for residents ahead of Asafotufiami

Naana Lomokie Lomo I, Queen of the Royal Lomobiawer Clan of Ada, has organised a free health screening for the natives and residents of Togbloku Okor and Wasakuse communities in the Ada East District.

The screening was also used to educate beneficiaries, made up of both young and old, on gender violence and its ripple effects on society.

The queen, also the founder of NENA’s Foundation, disclosed that the health and safety of the people were the foundation’s core priorities.

Naana Lomokie, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), emphasised that every leader must give back to society, stating that many people in the country were suffering and needed support in one way or another, urging leaders not to remain in their comfort zones and solely focusing on personal gains.

“It is getting closer to our festival, and I want to make sure that my people are fit for the festival because a lot of activities will be going on both in the various communities and the officially scheduled activities for the festival,” she disclosed.

In addition to the health screening, she donated items such as clothes, shoes, school bags, books, stationery, and snacks to the residents.

She also discussed with community members their challenges and how they could find solutions to them.

Madam Victoria Gadugah, an officer from the Disease Control Department of the Ada East District Health Directorate, disclosed that the checks revealed that most of the elderly had high blood pressure (BP) due to their diet and other factors, emphasising the need for them to take their diet very seriously.

She noted that most of the illnesses seen during the screening were malaria, typhoid, hypertension, and high blood pressure.

Madam Esther Ayimavor, the Chief Executive Officer of Naana Kakie Foundation, who was at the screening, cautioned the youth against engaging themselves in unprotected sex during the Asafotufiami Festival, citing rising HIV/AIDS statistics.

She said she used the programme to reach out to many residents and also distributed condoms to many men to help protect themselves from the virus, adding that she would continue such activities during the Asafotufiami Festival to ensure the safety of the people.

Some of the residents who spoke with GNA expressed their gratitude for the free health screening and appealed to the queen and other prominent figures to organise such exercises more frequently.

Approach society’s development with a good citizenry attitude – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Ghana Think Foundation in Takoradi, has organised a day’s training for individuals within the metropolis to create awareness and enhance good governance.

The free networking event was on the topic “Civic Education.”

Speaking at the event, Mr. Lan Kwame Tugbenu, the Deputy Regional Director, NCCE, Western Region, said civic education had been an essential element of all regimes in the country.

He said civic education aimed at inculcating in people, ideas, principles, practices, skills, opinions and other core values for the preservation and flourishing of any society or a system of government, adding that, civic education consisted of three main outcomes; the acquisition and demonstration of civic knowledge, skills and dispositions.

Touching on the outcomes, Mr. Tugbenu said, gaining information on the history and political system of the nation helped individuals to make informed judgements and choices, gain intellectual and participatory skills and a character that improved on democracy.

“Right from infancy, people are taught how to live as responsible members of society, a traditional evolution of education concerned with moral values,” he noted.

He indicated that, the pre-colonial era, the British established colonial administration, channeled the general concerns that protected the values and norms within the traditional setting.

These values included honesty, truthfulness, hardwork, respect for the elderly among others through the teaching and learning process like storytelling, folklore, taboos, songs, proverbs and wise sayings.

The Deputy Director noted that the mandate of the NCCE was to create and sustain society’s awareness of the principles and objectives of the constitution as the fundamental law of the Ghanaian people.

“Through civic education, citizenry approach society’s challenges with the right attitude that propels growth and development,”he noted.

Mr. Tugbenu urged all to embrace punctuality, patriotism, discipline, hardwork and honesty, adding that such characteristics could contribute to good governance system and a healthy working community.

Keta is the spiritual home of Beach Soccer – Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the National Chairman of Ghana Beach Soccer has lauded the teaming fans, who thronged the game arena to support the Ghana Black Sharks to victory over their Ivorian counterparts during their AFCON qualifier last Sunday.  

According to him, the over 9,000 fans, who were clothed in Ghana colours chanting victory for the team showed that Beach soccer has been accepted in Coastal Ghana, particularly Anlo-Keta area, 

“Keta is now the spiritual home of beach soccer, because what happened yesterday was beyond sports, the enthusiasm exhibited by the local fans before the game and even after the game was spectacular, it proves that there are greater days ahead for the sport in Ghana,” 

He made this known in an interview with the GNA Sports where he used the opportunity to thank all those who contributed towards a successful matchday. 

“We are grateful to everyone especially, the GFA, Togbi Agbeshie Awusu II, the Awadada and the entire Anlo Chiefs for their blessings and prayers before the game, the Local Organising Committee, who put all preparations in place, and other stakeholders, who supported the national team during their camping days in many ways to have a successful game Sunday.” 

Mr. Ampofo Ankrah used the opportunity to call on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to leverage on the enthusiasm displayed at Keta to prioritise Beach Soccer and give it the necessary support and attention it deserves.  

According to him, sports were meant to entertain and unite people, and beach soccer was serving in that regard and must be promoted and called for appropriate structures to be put in place for the proper development of the sport in Coastal Ghana. 

“Beach soccer is an opportunity to promote rich cultures, tourism, economics and entertainment and that is what Keta gave us yesterday, we saw the beautiful cultural performances, the loud music with the fanfare on the shores after the game, it is just a feeling more than sports,” 

The Ghana Black Sharks defeated the Sand Elephants of La Cote d’Ivoire by five goals to 3 (Ghana 5-3 CIV) with Alfred Torsu opening the scoreline with Kini Ticor and Wise Nyamadi netting two goals each to anchor victory for the Sharks. 

The team is expected to depart for Abidjan for the return leg on Saturday, July 27 after, which the winner qualifies for the Beach Soccer AFCON tournament to be hosted by Egypt, later this year. 

NPP Has Been Good to Wechiau; We Will Vote for Bawumia – Wechiau Paramount Chief

The Chiefs and people of Wechiau in the Wa West constituency of the Upper West Region have pledged their support for the NPP candidates in the upcoming elections, citing the party’s consistent dedication to the development of their area.

During a visit by NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday, 22nd July 2024, Naa Imoru Nandon Gomah II, the Paramount Chief of Wechiau, welcomed him warmly and expressed the community’s gratitude for the numerous developmental projects initiated by the NPP over the years.

“Your Excellency, the NPP Government since 2004 has given us a lot of developmental projects. The Wa West District was created by the NPP Government in 2004. The NPP Government has given us the biggest project, that is the Agenda 111 hospital project. The NPP government has also given us some dams and dugouts under One Village One Dam. The district has also received some roads. We have also benefitted from the Free Senior High School programme, as well as the School Feeding programme,” stated Naa Gomah II.

The Paramount Chief praised Dr. Bawumia for his respect for traditional institutions, as evidenced by his decision to formally announce his presidential candidacy to them. He assured Dr. Bawumia of their support, highlighting the NPP’s contributions to the region, including the creation of the Wa West District, the Agenda 111 hospital project, dams and dugouts, improved road infrastructure, and educational programs like Free Senior High School and the School Feeding programme.

“As Chiefs, we can assure you of our support to enable you to continue the good works of the New Patriotic Party Government after 7th December 2024. We wish you God’s blessings and protection,” Naa Gomah II declared, pronouncing his blessings on Dr. Bawumia.

In response, Dr. Bawumia thanked the Chiefs and the people of Wa West Constituency for their unwavering support. He emphasized his vision for Ghana’s future, which includes training children for future challenges and equipping the youth with the necessary skills to create jobs and compete on a global scale.

“My vision for Ghana’s future will see us, among others, train our children for the future and equip our youth with the requisite skills to create jobs and compete favourably with their contemporaries across the world,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
