Africa Disability Institute (ADI), a disability research and policy entity headquartered in Ho, in conjunction with its partners, has started implementing a development project in three Municipalities and a District in the Volta and Oti regions.

The four project areas are the Keta and Ketu South Municipalities of the Volta Region, the Nkwanta South Municipal and Nkwanta North District in the Oti Region.

The project dubbed, ‘Performance Accountability Activity (PAA), is a five-year Activity, funded by USAID with Democracy International as the grantee and ADI as the Implementing Partner in the four target districts.

PAA will help strengthen the confidence, give voice to the voiceless, and networks of women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups seeking to hold the government accountable for equitable service delivery.

Mr Francis Asong, Executive Director of Africa Disability Institute, at a stakeholder engagement at Keta to officially announce the project, and seek collaboration of stakeholders, said the project was focused on addressing the existing impediments in accessing essential services in education, healthcare, employment, water, hygiene, sanitation (WASH), agriculture and fisheries sectors.

He said the project would leverage on related support being provided by USAID and other donors in the implementing districts, to reinforce ongoing efforts to promote transparent, accountable, and inclusive governance in the aforementioned sectors.

The Executive Director explained that five communities in each of the four targeted districts, which were captured in the 2024 Annual Action Plans of the target Assemblies with PAA service sector focus, would be selection by stakeholders for the project.

The beneficiary Assemblies and their respective WASH, Agriculture, Health, Fisheries, and Education Service sectors will be the key stakeholders and facilitators for the project.

Mr Innocent Komla Gavua, the Keta Municipal Coordinating Director, who is elated about the project, believed the initiative would not only improve service delivery but the local economy as well, and indicated the readiness of the Municipality for the implementation.

He indicated, for instance, that the decreasing level of education at Keta Central was expected to be enhanced under the programme.

He also expressed the Assembly’s optimism that the fishing industry at Vodza would see improvement and uplift the livelihoods of the people with the Zonal Fisheries Commission playing a key role.

He further said the “Agricultural sector, especially at Atiavi and Lawoshime areas would be greatly enhanced.”

Mr Gavua said the Assembly was poised to facilitate, coordinate and monitor the project religiously as it would elect focal persons to champion service delivery of sectors selected under the project and to make it succeed.

Agbotadua Togbi Kumassah, Spokesperson of Togbui Sri III, the Awoamefia of Anlo State, told the Ghana News Agency that the sectors under consideration were crucial towards enhancing the livelihoods of the people, while pledging full support by the traditional authorities for the implementation.

He said as custodians of the land and tradition, their inclusion would engender real accountability of funds targeted for the project, stating that resources for instance for people with disability, the youth and women to address unemployment in the enclave would be upheld with all seriousness.

Overall, the Performance Accountability Activity targets 70 districts in 10 regions across the country, made up of 47 out of 55 districts across the Upper West, Upper East, Northern, Northeast and Savannah regions: and the remaining 23 out of 78 districts across the Oti, Volta, Western, Western North and Central Regions.

The districts were selected based on ongoing USAID activities and did not overlap with other donor funded public accountability strengthening interventions.

ADI was established with a core aim of becoming a disability research and policy reference point mainly for African governments, Academia and Parliaments as well as public and private sectors.

The Institute also operates a competent youth department, which focuses on specific issues concerning youth with disabilities.   Until December 2022, the group was known as Voice of People with Disability Ghana (VOICE Ghana) and has been promoting disability inclusion and mainstreaming agenda in Ghana, mainly at the grassroots level.

TESCON members urged to help NPP to break the eight

0

Mr. Castro Kwame Nkrumah, Kwadaso constituency Youth Organiser of the NPP, has urged members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) to remain resolute and concentrate on helping the party to fulfill the breaking the eight-year rule agenda.

He urged the members to help position TESCON to make it very attractive and undertake vigorous political and outreach campaigns at the grass-root levels to encourage people to join and vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December general elections.

Mr. Nkrumah was addressing members of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Obuasi Campus, branch of TESCON, during a fresher’s orientation and executive induction service at Obuasi.

It was on the theme: “Forge Ahead; Breaking the Eight, the Role of TESCON.”

He encouraged the members to stick to the founding principles of TESCON, which was the intellectual organ and breeding ground for future leaders of the party and the nation at large.

Mr. Nkrumah, touching on the theme, said the NPP would be counting on the TESCON to work hard at the grassroots to help the party maintain power in election 2024.

The Kwadaso Youth Organiser advised the members to preach the good policies of the party in government, adding that, the Government led by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo had laid down solid foundation to help transform the economy.

He commended the TESCON branch for their hard work and expressed the hope that they would work hard to persuade more students to join and help sell the NPP party.

NDC National Chairman caution party wreckers to repent or face sanctions

0

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has warned supporters of the party to desist from acts which could distract efforts of the Party to win power in the December7 elections.

He cautioned that the party hierarchy would not hesitate to apply severe sanctions against such supporters, who were bent on thwarting measures put in place to recapture power.

Mr Asiedu Nketia gave the warning when he addressed supporters and constituency executives of Agona West as part of his tour to the Central Region.

The National chairman was accompanied by the Central Regional Chairman, Prof Richard Asiedu and other National Executives of the party.

Mr Asiedu Nketia and his entourage earlier addressed supporters at various wards and branches at Agona Nyakrom, Nkum,  Kwamang, Upper and Lower Bobikuma and Agona Abodom.

He expressed grave concern about the protracted disputes in the area being perpetuated by “conflict investors’’ in the Agona West branch of the party and called for immediate ceasefire to enable the party to win the upcoming elections.

Mr Asiedu Nketia said it was strange that since the parliamentary primary was held last year, Agona West had never seen peace but rather divided front which has serious repercussion on the party’s activities.

Agona West, he pointed out, had for many years, been the stronghold of the NDC but due to the lingering misunderstanding and mischievous acts on the part of some members, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had taken absolute control of the constituency.

Mr Asiedu Nketia ordered Mrs Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, the Parliamentary Candidate, to as a matter of urgency, resolve all misunderstanding, embrace and unite all losers who contested the primary to get on board to support her campaign to achieve their objective.

Prof Richard Asiedu, the Regional Chairman, asked supporters who wasted energy and time to insult senior officers of the party on various social media platforms to stop the unprofitable acts before the laws caught up with them.

He further warned that the Central Regional Executive committee had vested powers and would not hesitate to dissolve all platforms being used by some party supporters to assist the party to achieve agenda 20 seats in the region.

Election 2024: Dr Bawumia promises to make Ghana pharmaceutical hub in West Africa

0

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, has promised to make Ghana a pharmaceutical hub in West Africa by providing financial support and incentives to the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture medicines locally, under his administration.

He pledged to implement policy frameworks to make the industry buoyant and beneficial to Ghanaians.

Currently, about 70 per cent of Ghana’s medicine supply is imported, with only 30 per cent manufactured locally.

During an interaction with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana in Accra, on Thursday, to listen and respond to their concerns, Dr Bawumia said Ghana had a comparative advantage in pharmaceutical services in the Sub-region and would exploit it positively under his administration.

The NPP flagbearer also agreed with the Society’s proposal for the establishment of a fit-for-purpose training centre for training pharmaceutical specialists.

Dr Bawumia called for re-direction of government scholarships to much-needed skills and believed that sponsoring pharmacists to specialise was essential to the nation.

He also embraced the idea of establishing a pharmaceutical enclave or park to boost the manufacturing of essential medicines locally.

On tax incentives for the pharmaceutical sector, the Vice President reiterated his earlier pledge to implement tax reliefs for individuals and businesses under his administration as well as flat tax rate and lower import duty to boost business transactions.

The NPP presidential candidate also welcomed an idea to review the medicine list of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) every six months to bring new medicines onboard.

On car waiver for pharmacists in the public sector, Vice President Bawumia responded positively to the Society’s request and believed that with the Ghana Card providing unique identity, it could be implemented without abusing it.

Dr Bawumia used the forum to highlight some of the policies the Akufo-Addo-led government had implemented in the health sector, including e-pharmacy platform that enabled people to purchase medicines online and Zipline medical drone technology for quick delivery of essential medicines and blood products to remote areas.

Earlier, Dr Samuel Kow Donkoh, the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, appealed to the NPP Flagbearer to consider making Community Pharmacies a primary health-care centre to undertake diagnosis and treatment of certain ailments.

He said the government should take immediate steps to recruit pharmacists into the public sector since there had not been any recruitment of pharmacists in the past three years.

Dr Donkoh also pleaded to Dr Bawumia to consider sponsoring specialist pharmacists to improve their skills if elected as President of the Republic.

He asked the NPP flagbearer to consider implementing contract manufacturing pharmaceutical companies to enable Ghanaian pharmaceutical firms expand production of medicines domestically.

Members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana were also given the opportunity to ask questions, made suggestions and proposed solutions to the challenges facing the sector.

Ghana launches Global Alliance for Technologies in Nature Conservation to protect natural ecosystems

0

The Ghana Chapter of Global Alliance for Technologies in Nature Conservation (GAfTiNC), an international organization dedicated to harnessing the power of technology to protect and preserve the world’s natural ecosystems, has been launched in Accra.

The organisation, the first of its kind to be launched globally, holds the view that by leveraging technology, biodiversity and ecosystems challenges could be easily addressed.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the launch, Mr Emmanuel Opoku, Country Coordinator of GAfTiNC, said the idea for setting up the organisation was born out of the desire to save the planet by bridging the vast gap in technology between the developed and developing countries.

“And the reason why we are coming up with this Association is that a lot of effort that has gone on to make sure of all the changes we are seeing in terms of the environment and nature conservation could be enhanced with technology,” he said.

Mr Opoku said unlike the past where issues of climate change and global warming seemed quite distant, the twin issues were now closer and the effects being experienced in the current harsh weather patterns across the country.

“Currently, we have seen this climate change come too close to the extent that in January and February, we are not seeing the way the weather is supposed to be in other months. The warming and the changes are telling us that there is something that we need to do,” Mr Opoku said.

He said while there were many advancements in technology overtime, no serious efforts had been made to integrate it in dealing with nature conservation and current governance issues globally.

“So, what we are doing is that we want to bring all the quality experts around the globe together so that we’ll be able to share ideas and to put in more effort to solve the challenges we are having in nature conservation,” Mr Opoku said.

He said by bringing together ICT professionals, conservation experts, researchers, students and environmental NGOs, among others, it would ensure that all the technologies available were used to solve the problems.

So, by bringing this association together, we’ll be able to have the technologies transferred as fast as possible. We could also find a way of coming together and devising an appropriate technology to solve the same problems.

Mr Opoku expressed the hope that the initiative from Ghana would within the next five years spread to every country and affect the whole world.

He said the Association was ready to partner with the Forestry Commission, which had done a lot of research into the use of sound detection systems to be able to detect illegal sounds in the forest, the various Ministries and companies to help with the conservation efforts.

GAFTINC’s mission is rooted in the belief that by leveraging technology, we can address the pressing challenges facing our planet’s biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

It aims to promote innovation, collaboration, and sustainability in conservation efforts, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to address pressing environmental challenges.

From remote sensing and artificial intelligence to blockchain and citizen science, GAfTiNC explores innovative approaches to conservation that harness the power of technology to drive positive change.

Focus more on human capital development to unlock Ghana’s resources – Expert

0

A Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (FAusIMM), Mr Henry Antwi, said to be able to unlock the full potential of Ghana’s resources, policies should focus more on human capital development.

He, thus, called on the Government and the mining industry to boost the infrastructure and resource capacity of universities for effective human resource capacity building.

That would also ensure the building of capacity of graduates to innovate and use the right tools and technology to unlock the full potential of the mining industry in Ghana, he said.

Mr Antwi said this at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa, when the AusIMM Tarkwa Student Forum, held the Seventh Annual conference, on the theme: “Industry Training and Job Opportunities; Pathway for Empowering Young Professionals in Mining.”

It brought together mining companies, academia, media and other mining stakeholders, offering the students the opportunity to interact with industry executives and gain a good understanding of the theory.

On skills development, he mentioned competition and technology, which were driving change for relentless restructuring, and encouraged mining professionals to adapt and skill up to drive innovations to improve productivity and reduce operation costs.

Mr Antwi, also the Founder of the AusIMM, Tarkwa Student Chapter, spoke about revolutionary knowledge applications in artificial intelligence and technology, the increased penetration of robotics in process-controlled operations, and autonomous mining, emphasizing that global efforts to decarbonize economies called for the urgency for alternative energy sources such as renewable energy.

He challenged academia to develop technologies to increase the discovery of new mineral deposits, especially critical minerals including lithium, copper and cobalt.

Mr Antwi updated the participants on the current state of the local and global mining industry, saying mining played a crucial role in Ghana’s economic development contributing to GDP, export earnings and government revenue.

Mr Samuel Boakye Pobee, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, said: “In this era our softwares are becoming more collaborative.”

“We need to develop that collaborative attitude in school… l think we need to build that in our students by giving group assignments, let’s stop giving individual assignments.”

Mr Stephen Yamoah Asante, the General Manager of Chirano Mine, explained that: “As students you have enormous opportunities to equip yourselves to be successful, so instead of bordering yourselves with questions on what is out there, let’s take advantage now.”

“Although there are thousands of graduates out there, and vacancies are limited, we still advertise as employers with three years’ experience but end up employing people who have just completed university. The reason is that we identify people who can add value to the work we are doing.”

Miss Ekuba Bezeba Yalley, a lecturer at the Mining Engineering Department, UMaT, stressed that although the mining industry was a male dominated area, women studying science and engineering should be encouraged as the country was growing.

“At UMaT we are looking at bringing more ladies into the mining industry, so we have instituted this gender mainstreaming policy that is fighting to get as many as 40 per cent of our student population to be women.”

The President of the AusIMM Tarkwa Chapter, Mr Daniel Obeng Boadi, noted that the chapter had provided opportunities for professional development for the students through monthly webinars, mine visits, networking with industry professionals and AusIMM Scholarships.

He expressed appreciation to the founder and other stakeholders who had supported them in diverse ways.

Dr Kofi Peter Amponsah-Mensah, the Director of Pamicor Limited, Mine Manager at Golden Star Resources, Wassa Mine, Mr George Asongo and Miss Josephine Wesoama Valejega of the Minerals Commission were present at the conference.

DR Congo appoints its first female prime minister amid rising conflict.

0

On Monday, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi announced that Judith Suminwa Tuluka will become the country’s first female prime minister. This monumental decision fulfils President Tshisekedi’s campaign promise and represents a huge step towards female equality in Congolese politics.

Judith Suminwa Tuluka, a former planning minister, takes on her new post at a difficult time for the country, notably in the conflict-torn eastern area. The region, rich in minerals and resources, has been plagued by unending warfare, displacing millions of residents and earning the unenviable reputation of being one of the world’s greatest humanitarian catastrophes.

Addressing the nation in her inaugural speech aired on state television, Prime Minister Tuluka pledged to prioritize peace and development efforts, particularly in the conflict-ridden eastern provinces. She expressed deep concern for the plight of those affected by the ongoing violence and reaffirmed her commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the crisis.

However, Prime Minister Tuluka’s appointment comes amidst the arduous task of forming a new government, a process expected to involve extensive negotiations with various political factions. Despite the challenges ahead, her appointment symbolizes a significant breakthrough in Congolese politics and offers hope for greater inclusivity and representation in governance.

The situation in eastern Congo remains dire, with numerous armed groups vying for control and perpetuating a cycle of violence and instability. Both local and international peacekeeping efforts have struggled to contain the conflict, further exacerbating the suffering of the civilian population.

President Tshisekedi, who secured reelection for a second term last December, has reiterated his commitment to addressing the root causes of the violence. He has accused neighboring Rwanda of backing rebel groups operating in eastern Congo, allegations vehemently denied by Rwandan authorities.

The United States has called for restraint from both Congo and Rwanda, urging diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation of tensions. Additionally, the U.S. State Department has emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the withdrawal of foreign troops from Congolese territory.

As Prime Minister Tuluka assumes her new role, she faces the formidable task of steering the nation towards stability and prosperity amidst daunting challenges. Her appointment represents a historic milestone in Congolese politics and underscores the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment in national leadership.

Israel is asked to address the humanitarian issue in Gaza.

0
Israeli airstrike destroyed the 14-storey Watan Tower, a residential building that also included a number of press and commercial offices, in the Al-Rimal area in central Gaza City, October 8, 2023. Israeli colonial forces declared a "complete siege” on Gaza, denying the enclave’s millions of residents access to food, water and fuel and launched hundreds of airstrikes, killing hundreds and causing the displacement of tens of thousands of Palestinians. On the morning of October 7, the Palestinian resistance led by Hamas launched a surprise attack called the Al-Aqsa Flood operation. Dozens of resistance fighters raided Israeli settlements and thousands of rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip. At least 900 Israelis were killed and more than 100 are being held ass hostages by Hamas in Gaza.

Palestinians in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, where around 1.4 million people, or more than half of the territory’s population, have taken sanctuary, are fighting to make ends meet.

They say the already trickling humanitarian help is impossible to get, and food at the city’s market, which is overcrowded with thousands of people, is prohibitively costly.

“Only God’s will keeps us alive. The help pouring in is insufficient, and the people are malnourished. “Everyone is deprived of everything,” says Rafah resident Hanaa Asdoudy.

The top United Nations court on Thursday ordered Israel to take measures to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, including opening more land crossings to allow food, water, fuel and other supplies into the war-ravaged enclave.

The International Court of Justice issued two new so-called provisional measures in a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of acts of genocide in its military campaign launched after the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas.

The U.N. and international aid groups say aid deliveries have been impeded by Israeli military restrictions, ongoing hostilities and the breakdown of public order.

Israel declared war in response to a bloody cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 others were taken hostage.

Israel responded with a campaign of airstrikes and a ground offensive that have left over 32,000 Palestinians dead, according to local health authorities.

The Health Ministry in Gaza does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, but say roughly two-thirds of those killed are women and children.

Israel’s military offensive has displaced over 80% of Gaza’s population, caused widespread damage and has sparked a humanitarian crisis.

The U.N. and international aid agencies say virtually the entire Gaza population is struggling to get enough food, with hundreds of thousands of people on the brink of famine, especially in hard-hit northern Gaza.

Kylian Mbappe criticized for ‘concerning’ performance and ‘disastrous’ response against Marseille, as PSG informed they have ‘zero chance’ of beating Barcelona with the superstar misfiring.

0

Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain was lambasted for his “concerning” performance and “disastrous” response to being substituted against Marseille.

Luis Enrique took the PSG striker off early on Sunday following a poor evening at Stade Velodrome, where the visitors won 2-0 courtesy to goals from Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos. Mbappe failed to make an impression in attack, and Jerome Rothen has questioned his performance, as well as the team’s chances in the Champions League against a resurgent Barcelona.

WHAT ROTHEN SAID

Speaking to RMC Sport, Rothen said: “He (Mbappe) was bad at the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday, he was bad with the French team in both matches… It’s rare that he doesn’t make the score tick. It’s already happened to him not to be good, and I said it in the first part of the season, but to still score goals and make your team win or at least help them not to lose. That hasn’t been the case for three games. This is really the first match with PSG in a long time where he really isn’t good.”

Expressing his concerns about a misfiring Mbappe ahead of PSG’s crucial continental clash against Barcelona, Rothen added: “I hope he will quickly get back on the right path. Starting with Wednesday’s match in the Coupe de France with the semi-final against Rennes but especially the week after. Because if PSG has a Mbappe in this form against Barcelona, there is zero chance, PSG will not pass. That’s clear and clear!”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite PSG’s victory in the Cassique, Mbappe shared a downbeat photo of himself on his social media handles, where he was seen clutching the captaincy band with his right hand fingers. What was even more intriguing was the caption that followed, which read: “Are you sad my love? Relax, it’s almost time” – almost hinting at his potential move to Real Madrid in the summer.

Rothen slammed Mbappe for his “disastrous communication” and urged him to improve his attitude. “There is his communication. And for me, it is a big problem anyway, with all the players and with Kylian in particular because he is one of the most followed guys in the world in football,” he said. “His communication is disastrous on Sunday. Just put a photo of him with the armband hanging like ‘I’m sad because I’m going out and then my God, Luis Enrique took me out of a match’. Yes, well now it’s been two months, and you’re used to it. And anyway, he should have been doing that since the beginning of the year.

“He deserves to come out at half-time or the hour mark, there’s no problem, I have nothing against that. But his communication is horrible. It’s a Classic, you know what that represents and even more so you, who is very identified with Paris Saint-Germain, cannot allow yourself to do that. He cannot allow himself to do that! Publicly, knowing that you are at the end of your contract with everything you have given to the club, you cannot have this communication. That’s what’s causing the mess! We no longer talk about the match but about his attitude. He must erase all that! I I say, through him and through others too, for social networks the clubs must be more vigilant, much more vigilant.”

Mbappe will have the opportunity to shut down his critics in the French Cup semi-final against Rennes on Wednesday and a subsequent Ligue 1 game against Clermont Foot on Saturday. The attacker will look to regain his scoring touch in those two matches before PSG face Barcelona next Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Zinedine Zidane never saw Marco Materazzi again after the notorious 2006 World Cup final headbutt, as former Italy defender clarifies comments about France legend’s sister.

0

Marco Materazzi said that he never saw Zinedine Zidane again following the notorious headbutt incident during the 2006 World Cup final.

Materazzi, a former Italy defender, was embroiled in a violent dispute with Zidane, which ended with the French star headbutting him and getting a red card. Following the incident, Italy won the final by edging a penalty shootout and finishing 1-1 after extra time. Materazzi expressed sorrow in an interview with The Times, insisting that the episode should not be remembered as the highlight of his otherwise outstanding football career.

WHAT MATERAZZI SAID

“I don’t like it, because it doesn’t do justice to what my career was,” he said.

“That episode should never have happened. In the tension of that final in Berlin, amidst the bickering and insults, Zidane offered me his shirt, and I said no, that I preferred his sister. Then he turned around and reacted as everyone remembers. I never saw Zinedine again.”

Materazzi also reflected on his time at Inter Milan, particularly under the management of Jose Mourinho, who guided the club to the treble in 2009-10. He praised Mourinho as the best manager he ever worked with, despite initial challenges adjusting to a reduced role in the team.

“He was, without a doubt [the best manager I ever had],” Materazzi said.

“And despite everything, it wasn’t easy to accept my initial situation. I was used to being important, to being the captain, but with Mourinho, I started to lose prominence. However, he was honest with me from the very first moment, when he told me that I was going to be less involved. It was a pity we didn’t meet earlier.”

TREBLE VS WORLD CUP

When asked to compare his greatest achievements – the 2010 club treble with Inter Milan and Italy’s World Cup triumph in 2006 – Materazzi found it impossible to choose between the two.

“Do you prefer mum or dad? I can’t choose one over the other. They were without doubt the two best nights of my career,” he said.

WHAT NEXT?

Post-retirement, Materazzi, now 50 years old, remains active in football, occasionally participating in friendlies with his former Inter Milan team-mates. However, it is evident from his remarks that he desires his professional legacy to be remembered for the trophies he won and not for the incident with Zidane, who has enjoyed a successful career in management since hanging up his boots after the 2006 World Cup final.
