Thierry Henry accused of ‘downplaying’ Cristiano Ronaldo’s status as a Manchester United great. Rio Ferdinand outlines potential source of the apparent enmity between the duo.

Rio Ferdinand has accused Thierry Henry of “downplaying” Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary status at Manchester United.

Rio Ferdinand has accused Henry of having “beef” with Ronaldo because he does not laud the Al-Nassr player as often as other analysts do. Of fact, Ferdinand worked with Ronaldo for six years at United, and the two eras actually overlap, with Ronaldo taking on Henry when the latter was still playing for Arsenal.

Ferdinand believes that said “beef” stems from a fractious clash between the two clubs in 2005, when United won 4-2 at Highbury and Ronaldo and Henry appeared to clash. He also says that Ronaldo – who played for Brazil, Real Madrid and Barcelona in a legendary career – has a disagreement with Cristiano, because the latter’s emergence led to the World Cup winner being labelled “fat Ronaldo”.

Ferdinand told Andreas Poke on a podcast about Ronaldo: “There’s beef there somewhere you know. It’s cause of the name. I think because of the name, as if he says, ‘You took my name,’ so I have a problem with you.”

He added: ‘It’s the same with Thierry [Henry]. Thierry is the same. The way I see Thierry talk about Cristiano, it’s more what he doesn’t say. He doesn’t talk about him with any zest or spark. It’s like he’s downplaying Cristiano a lot.

“There was a clip at Highbury when Henry slaps him on the back of his head or something like that and Cristiano pushes him off. Cristiano then scored the winner and Henry’s taking the kick-off with the goalscorer in the background. There seems like there’s a little bit of a subplot story that maybe makes it with Thierry and it’s probably still in his mind in moments like that.”

Manchester United face competition for Jarrad Branthwaite! Man City enters fight for Everton star, with Real Madrid also keen in the £80 million-rated defender.

Manchester United will compete with prominent European teams such as Manchester City and Real Madrid for Everton’s star player.

Earlier in March, FootballTransfers revealed that Manchester United is a serious candidate to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as the Red Devils strive to strengthen their backline ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Now the Daily Mail reports that United would face competition from rivals Manchester City and La Liga giants Real Madrid in pursuit of the English defender, who has a release clause of £60m (€70m) in his current contract.

In the 2023/24 season, Branthwaite has appeared in 31 matches across all competitions and has performed consistently for his side despite The Toffees being placed at the bottom half of the league.

Manchester United decide on Scott McTominay’s contract after the midfielder leaves Sir Jim Ratcliffe thrilled with his super-sub performances this season.

Manchester United are set to offer midfielder Scott McTominay a new contract after Sir Jim Ratcliffe was delighted with his performances.

Per the Daily Star, new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have been impressed by McTominay’s performances and believe that the Scotland international can be a key player for the future and are willing to hand him both a new deal and a pay rise. This season, McTominay has scored seven league goals in 25 games.

United have the option to extend McTominay’s current £60,000-per-week deal by a further year but the report claims he can expect to double his money and extend his stay as a result. There had been interest from West Ham and Newcastle in securing his signature but United are keen to tie him down.

The Scotland star is a lifelong United fan and has made 243 appearances for the club in total. In that time, he has netted 28 goals and provided eight assists, while also winning 41 caps for his country.

Ashley Cole discusses why Cristiano Ronaldo was his toughest opponent ever, as the former Arsenal and Chelsea great is inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Ashley Cole chose Cristiano Ronaldo as his most difficult opponent after being inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Premier League announced on Monday that the former Arsenal and Chelsea player will be the first inductee into the 2024 Premier League Hall of Fame. Cole claimed after earning the award that Portuguese legend Ronaldo is the most difficult opponent he has ever faced in his career.

Cole described the Al-Nassr star as a complete footballer and revealed how the ex-United winger quickly adjusted to the English top-tier football after coming as a youngster from Sporting CP. The English full-back also claimed that the Portuguese gave him nightmares on the pitch.

WHAT ASHLEY COLE SAID

Speaking about Ronaldo, Cole said, “Over the years, Cristiano Ronaldo and I had some mighty battles and we have a mutual respect for each other. He came to the Premier League as a little bit of an unknown, but he soon understood what it took to be a top player. He was willing to learn and adapt. He wanted to be the best player in the world and became a machine.

“He had everything. He could dribble, he could sprint behind, he could leap and jump and head a ball, he could go inside, he could go outside. So I say he always gave me nightmares, but you try to work each other out and we got the best of each other at times. Whenever I hear his name or see his face, I always think of when he made me do the splits! [in 2003/04, Ronaldo’s first Premier League season]”

NPP Diaspora has crucial role to play for Election 2024 victory – Veep

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, has urged members of the Party’s external branches to come together and work as a team for victory in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Speaking at the NPP International Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the weekend, Dr Bawumia said the Diaspora branches were crucial to the Party’s victory in December.

“The diaspora branches of the NPP have been very key to the fortunes of the NPP. And for the 2024 elections, you have major roles to play,” he mphasised.

The NPP Flagbearer stated that in recognition of their key roles, his campaign had set up a special structure for diaspora affairs.

“Dear Patriots, many of you in the diaspora have asked about your role in the campaign. The National Campaign Team comprises the diaspora coordination team made up of Dr Akwasi Acheampong, Amponsah Stonash, Obaa Yaa Frimpong, Richard Gyamfi, Emmanuel Attafuah and Kingsley Agyemang,”Dr Bawumia stated.

“The purpose of the team is to bring to bear the exceptional talents in the diaspora, coordinate plans and ideas from the diaspora, among other resources, to infuse them into the broader national campaign strategy and execution.”

“I do not doubt that the team we have assembled will work extremely hard to make all diaspora feel a part of the campaign.”

Dr. Bawumia assured them of his readiness to embrace all party members and underscored the need for them to unite for the party to break the eight, and also win the majority seats in Parliament.

“Unity is not something we must take for granted. We must work vigorously at it. As your flagbearer, I stand before you, as an inclusive and unifying person, with a deep-seated conviction to embrace all of you to my team and campaign,” he assured.

“I pledge not to alienate any of you. I stand with you, whether you campaigned for me or not.”

The NPP International Conference was attended by representatives of the party’s external branches across the world.

2024 Elections: I will be more accountable to Ghanaians – Dr Bawumia

0

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, has assured Ghanaians of his unalloyed accountability to them after 2024 if elected as President of the Republic in the December Election.

Speaking at the NPP’s International Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, over the weekend, Dr Bawumia stated that he had never been president before, and if given the opportunity, would be more accountable to Ghanaians because he would have another opportunity to present himself for re-election.

He said that was unlike his main contender former President John Dramani Mahama, who would not return because he would be serving just one-term in office in the unlikely event he was elected as President of Ghana in the December polls.

“Apart from my proven track record as Vice President, hard work, credibility and vision for the future of Ghana, another reason I should be voted for is that I will be more accountable to the people of Ghana than John Mahama,” Dr Bawumia said.

“As President, I will be more accountable because I will have another opportunity to seek the mandate of the people after 2024.  Mahama has just one term and he will not come back to Ghanaians to seek re-election, so he will not be accountable.”

“Ghana needs a leader with credibility and a proven track record to solve generational problems and corruption.”

Dr Bawumia said he had proven to be a problem-solver and anti-corruption advocate through policies he had spearheaded as Vice President.

“Ghana needs problem solvers, generational thinkers and people with innovative ideas,” he said.

“I am a problem solver and a generational thinker with innovative ideas. I have a solid track record as Vice-President to prove it.”

The NPP Flagbearer made reference to several policy initiatives he had spearheaded, which were addressing generational problems in the country.

These include the digital national identity system, which is addressing the age-long problem of lack of national identity and exclusion; and the the national property address system, which is addressing the problem of lack of property identity,” he said.

“The mobile money interoperability, resolving the issue of financial exclusion and promoting a cashless society, digitalisation of public services to promoting efficiency and reducing corruption, delivery of essential drugs to remote areas through drones, as well as the One-Ambulance, One-Constituency, and Agenda 111 hospitals.”

The NPP Flagbearer said he had demonstrated a stronger commitment to the fight against corruption and referenced the digitalisation of many public services, which was contributing effectively to the corruption fight.

“What policies did former President Mahama initiate to fight corruption as President or Vice President? If you ask him, he cannot state one because he was not committed to fighting corruption,” he said.

SMEs need services of professional accountants

0

Ms Sena Dake, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), has urged Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to engage the services of professional accountants, either full-time or part-time, to sustain their businesses.

“SMEs should not see the services of professional accountants as only for the big businesses. They equally need accountants to help them in the preparation of proper book of records to enable them save and invest back in their businesses to sustain them,” she said.

Ms Dake said this during the launch of a book on the history of professional accountability in Ghana titled: “The Evolution of Professional Accountancy from the Gold Coast to Ghana”.

The book authored by Professor Edward Dua Agyeman, Board Chairman of the Ghana Audit Service, gives an insight into the history of the growth and evolution of professional accountancy from 1890 to 2024.

Ms Dake said the work of professional accountants could not be underestimated in business operations, saying they were the ones that would guide the SMEs to the right financial decisions to make.

“It is the work of accountants that saves the nation’s purse and economies as well as save businesses from risks and offers them opportunities to make the right decisions,” she added.

Ms Dake said the phase of the profession was evolving from assurance reporting to digital services, which relied on big data, climate change adaptation and cybersecurity.

She urged members of the profession to acquaint themselves with the current digital changing phase of services to stay relevant in the 21st century.

Professor Edward Dua Agyeman said he was inspired to write the book as a giveback to the profession due to his long professional experience and no detailed book had been written on the history of the profession in the country.

“I reflected on my professional achievements as an accountant and felt it was right to give back through this book,” he reiterated.

The eight-chapter and 371-page book was launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who also wrote the foreword for the book.

Professor Edward Dua Agyeman is the current Board Chairman of the Ghana Audit Service and a former Auditor-General, having been appointed to the office of Auditor-General in 2001.

He is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Ghana.

Ghana to host conference on lasting solutions to Africa’s debt crisis

0

Ghana, under the auspices of the International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs), will host a three-day conference to learn from the past, and find lasting solutions to the continent’s debt crisis.

It is being convened in partnership with the African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD) and the government of Ghana.

The three-day conference, to be held from 27th to 29th March 2024, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra, is being organised at a time that about half of African countries are either in debt distress or on the brink of a debt crisis.

The conference would, therefore, provide a platform to draw lessons from the past, identify how best to restructure debt and prevent insolvency and have alternatives to external-loan support programmes on debt sustainability.

Through panel and roundtable discussions, Political Scientists, Economists, Policymakers, and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), would also come out with ways of reforming the global financial architecture.

There would also be case reviews of debt and restructuring processes in Africa [Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia, Ghana], Asia [Sri Lanka], and Latin America [Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico].

Speaking at a pre- conference media briefing on Friday, March 22, Dr Yaw Graham, Chairman, Africa Executive Council, IDEAs, said the conference would end with the development of different approaches to tackling Africa’s debt crisis.

It would, thus ensure that countries, experts from academia and industry, development partners, and CSOs come out with positive actions, and through advocacy and solidarity, ensure the implementation of the conference outcomes.

Dr Graham noted that many African countries had found themselves in debt crisis due to a multiplicity of factors – a downturn in commodity crisis, rise in foreign interest rate, COVID-19 pandemic, and the effects of the Russian-Ukraine war.

That, he said was because the continent failed to build resilience when it had the opportunity to borrow from the international market, as such, when the situation changed, the countries could no longer borrow to service their debts.

“It’s just about a decade ago that the conversation about Africa was about Africa rising, and there was a mood of optimism – the development indicators were good,” he noted.

Nonetheless, the number of African countries borrowing from the international credit market increased, as the international credit market found them attractive, he stated.

Dr Graham said during the same period, the role of the Bretton Woods institutions declined as the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative ended, while governments resorted to more domestic borrowings.

The accumulation of debts, he said had led to pressure on public finances, with a huge percentage of resources available being spent on debt servicing among many African countries.

The situation, he said required a reflection on the change in the debt profile over the past 20 years and to situate the evolution into context and work collaboratively to solve it – the objective of the conference.

PPP opens nominations for presidential primaries April 1

0

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) will open nominations for its presidential primaries from April 1 to April 30, 2024.

A statement signed by Remy Paa Kow Edmundson, National Secretary, PPP, said the decision was arrived at the Party’s National Committee meeting held on March 7, 2024.

The Party said members who were interested in representing the PPP in the 2024 presidential elections could access the nomination forms at the National Secretary’s Office at the Party’s Headquarters.

The PPP said it had slashed the filing fees for female candidates and persons with disabilities by 50 per cent.

The Party said interested candidates must demonstrate their ability to mobilise resources to contest the 2024 elections on the ticket of the Party.

“The Progressive People’s Party commits to undertake a free, fair and transparent Presidential Primary election and urges all Party members to support this endeavour,” the statement said.

Madam Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku, the 2020 Presidential Candidate and 2016 running mate of the Party is reported to have declared her interest in contesting the flag bearership slot.

The Party earlier announced that it would be targeting not more than 10 parliamentary seats in constituencies that the PPP was confident of winning in the 2024 General Election.

In the 2020 elections, the Party fielded 19 parliamentary candidates but could not secure a seat in Parliament.

2024 Elections: NDC’s 24-hour economy is game changer-Sosu

0

The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) “24-hour economy” will be the game changer in the 2024 General Election, Mr Francis Xavier Sosu, Madina Member of Parliament, has said.

Mr. Sosu has, therefore, urged all Ghanaians to vote massively for the NDC to turn things around.

The Madina MP said the government was the largest employer and that with the 24-hour economy, workers would work in a three-shift system, towards the creation of more decent jobs.

He said this when he visited the Berean Assemblies of God Church at Manet, Ogbojo near Madina.

The 24-hour economy is an economic model whereby the whole or part of the architecture or infrastructure of the economy adjusts to support 24-hour operations of businesses, factories, government services, restaurants, shops, healthcare delivery, banking and other services throughout the day and night.

The MP and Lawyer noted that in the year 2022, the unemployment rate was at 13.7 per cent and in the year 2023, it was over 14 per cent.

“This year, we do not know what the unemployment situation would be like.”

Mr Sosu told the congregation that he had put in place some interventions, including scholarships for young people to continue their education and a job Centre to train people in vocation.

According to him, over 7,000 people had benefitted from the Madina Job Centre.

Mr Sosu recounted the various roles he had played in criminalising the accusation of witchcraft and the abolition of death penalty in the country.

He said he was also working tirelessly to ensure that taxes were removed on sanitary pads, and for women and men to enjoy maternity and paternity leave.

He said maternity leave would help women to breastfeed their babies with breast milk.

“Studies have shown that exclusive breastfeeding enables children to develop special and unique intellect and special bond between mothers and their babies.”

He urged the Church to pray for him and the NDC as the country prepared for elections in December.

Rev. David Ampadu Berkoh, the Head Pastor of Berean Assemblies of God Church tasked the MP to ensure that roads within the Church area received facelift.

Rev Berkoh led the entire congregation to pray for the MP and the country.
