African Centre trains 50 PWDs in livelihood skills

0

The African Centre for Human Rights and Sustainable Development (AfCHuRSD) has trained 50 women in liquid and bar soap making in Tamale.

The beneficiaries were persons with disabilities (PwDs) and caregivers of PwDs selected from the Sagnarigu Municipality.

The training was to equip them with livelihood skills that would enable them cater for themselves and their dependants.

It was part of the initiatives of the Promoting Equal Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities in Ghana project (PERD).

The PERD project seeks to promote the fundamental human rights of women and girls with disabilities, especially the right to employment and protection from sexual and gender-based violence.

It is being implemented by the AfCHuRSD, Planned Parenthood Association Ghana and Women in Need, and funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana.

Madam Bernice Naah, Executive Director, AfrCHuRSD, said the participants were selected by the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations taking into consideration those who needed the skills most.

She said the participants opted for soap making, among other skills, adding the women’s choice was indicative of their interest in the venture.

She noted that the PERD project was in its final phase, saying livelihood trainings had been a core activity of the project since it began in 2021.

Previously, some of the participants were trained on financial literacy under the project.

Madam Fadilatu Abdullah, a beneficiary, said having knowledge in financial record keeping coupled with skills in making different types of soap was a great benefit to her.

She expressed readiness in building up on the training to produce soap on commercial basis.

Madam Amina Mohammed, also a beneficiary, said she benefited from earlier trainings and received support to expand her business.

She said the support from the PERD project had cushioned her to provide basic needs of her children.

Madam Zeinab Alhassan, a first time beneficiary of the project and a caregiver of a PwD, extended gratitude to the organisers for the gesture.

She said as a petty trader, adding soap making to her trade would ease the burden of taking care of a child with disability.

British lawmakers fear for their safety following threats and insults over Gaza.

A British legislator feared for his safety after 10 minutes of screamed allegations of being a “genocide enabler” and having “blood on your hands” for supporting Israel in its conflict with Hamas.

The opposition Labour Party member almost touched noses with his accuser before walking away and threatening to contact the police, claiming that the event at a town in his district was only the latest of numerous that had caused him to modify his conduct.

He now makes sure he sits near the door on public transport and limits meetings with the public.

“It feels like it could just need one spark to flip from someone giving you tuppence (criticism) in the street to escalating to actual violence,” the lawmaker said.

After the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that sparked the war in Gaza, more than 10 British politicians spoken to by Reuters said the abuse directed at them had become more intense. At least one cited this as a factor in deciding not to seek a new term in parliament in an election later this year.

All spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were fearful that giving their names would increase the threats and abuse.

The conflict in the Palestinian enclave has inflamed tensions across the globe, bringing protesters onto the streets in support of both sides and dividing opinion among leaders over how to end the bloodshed.

In Britain, even politicians who are no strangers to receiving abuse from the public say the tone has become ugly and dangerous, with some fearing it could easily slip into violence.

Many are considering taking steps to protect themselves, such as wearing stab vests in meetings or building safe rooms.

Last week, parliamentary speaker Lindsay Hoyle sent parliament into chaos when he broke with precedent to allow the three main parties to set out their positions on a call for a ceasefire in Gaza. That was designed to prevent lawmakers from having to choose between backing a ceasefire, abstaining or voting against one to follow their party orders.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called on all sides to “take the heat” out of the issue but some of his Conservative lawmakers have been accused of Islamophobia in their responses. They deny the charge.

The interior ministry announced funding worth 31 million pounds ($39 million) on Wednesday to provide new security provisions for lawmakers and other officials. It would be used to protect “democratic processes from disruption”, it said.

But despite getting the highly charged ceasefire vote out of the way last week and the level of abuse easing a little, some lawmakers have decided to quit, saying the threats had become intolerable. The memory of two lawmakers – one killed by a right-wing extremist in 2016 and the other in 2021 by a man inspired by Islamic State – weighs heavily.

‘TOXIC’

After seeing his office in his North London constituency targeted in a suspected arson attack in December, Conservative lawmaker Mike Freer said he was standing down at the election after a “constant string of incidents”. He had defended Israel.

Dozens of protesters demonstrated outside the home of Tobias Ellwood, another Conservative lawmaker, earlier this month, with signs accusing him of being “complicit in genocide” in Gaza.

The Labour lawmaker who now watches where he sits in public transport said he had been advised by police to install a partition at his constituency or voting district office so that people waiting to see him could not get near to him quickly.

He described a huge coordinated email campaign against him and others. The emails, sent from different addresses in the run up to the Feb. 21 ceasefire vote, which had no binding effect on the government, demanded lawmakers vote for an immediate ceasefire and call on ministers to suspend arms sales to Israel.

Another lawmaker said he had discussed with his wife getting a safe room installed at home.

“No one should have to think about having a safe room just because they want to serve their communities,” he said.

A veteran politician said there had been other times when public anger meant lawmakers were in the firing line, such as over Britain’s departure from the European Union, but that the threat of violence over Gaza marked a change for the worse.

“I have had conversations with two colleagues about wearing stab vests to meetings,” he said. “This is a very recent development.”

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated the family members were all in good health.

Three members of an Italian family abducted and kept captive in Mali since May 2022 have returned to Rome on Tuesday.

Rocco Langone, his wife Maria Caivano, and their son Giovanni arrived at Ciampino Airport, where they were received by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and another son, Daniel Langone.

“I do not wish to anyone to go through what I went through,’’ Daniele Langone told reporters. “I am so grateful for all that has been done for me and for my family.”

Rome says an Al-Qaeda affiliated group, known as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, kidnapped the family from their home in a community for Jehovah’s Witnesses on the outskirts of Koutiala, a city southeast of the capital Bamako.

Italian authorities said the family had lived in Mali for years as part of a “well-integrated community of Jehovah’s Witnesses.”

Tajani said that the family members were all in good condition.

Jadon Sancho is urged to be part of Mason Greenwood ‘conversation’ as Man Utd star Andy Cole says £72 million winger may yet resuscitate Old Trafford career.

0

According to ex-striker Andy Cole, Jadon Sancho may yet have a future at Manchester United if Sir Jim Ratcliffe joined the club.

Sancho is facing an uncertain future after a difficult campaign. The winger was exiled at Manchester United after falling out with Erik ten Hag and sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund. However, he’s having a rocky time back in the Bundesliga, with German media slamming him for his latest performance in a 3-2 defeat to Hoffenheim. Yet United legend Cole thinks Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent comments on Mason Greenwood, where he opened the door to a potential return, suggest that Sancho could still have a future at Old Trafford.

Cole told BetFred: “Whether he does or doesn’t stay at Manchester United in the long-term, the kid is still a very talented player. You can all sit here and say he’s got to get his head right, but I think everyone needs to get their head and mindset right at times. It’s not worked out for him at the moment at Manchester United, but you just never know what’s going to happen.

“I listened to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s comments the other day regarding Mason Greenwood and how a decision regarding his future will be made in the summer, so it looks like they’re going to go back to that situation and review it, so I believe that Sancho will be in that discussion as well. Yes, he’s had a tough time, but can they address this problem? If they can’t address this problem, what is the best thing for Jadon Sancho as well as Manchester United? That’s the way they’ve got to look at things.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Manchester United and Ratcliffe have some big decisions to make in the summer on several players but particularly Greenwood and Sancho. Greenwood is said to be reluctant to return to Manchester United and has attracted interest from La Liga clubs Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during his season-long loan with Getafe. Meanwhile, Sancho will have been hoping to impress back at Dortmund after returning to the pitch following his United exile. Yet he has managed just a solitary assist so far and Dortmund have already admitted it will be difficult to sign the winger on a permanent basis.

WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHO

Sancho will see out the season with Dortmund but then looks set to return to Manchester United. His future under Erik ten Hag looks bleak as things stand, after failing to apologise to the Dutchman, but his situation at the club could change if the Red Devils opt to change coach in the summer.

Haaland warns rivals after bagging five in FA Cup blowout.

Erling Haaland believes he is finally back to his best after scoring five goals against Luton in the FA Cup.

Manchester City dominated over Luton in the fifth round, winning 6-2 at Kenilworth Road. Mateo Kovacic scored the other goal.

Kevin De Bruyne was also on fire for the Premier League winners, dishing up four assists to his Norwegian teammate, who feels the club is in for a bright future.

He said: “We made a plan and everyone stuck to it perfectly. Well played by everyone.

“Kevin De Bruyne is massive. He is doing what he is best at. It’s a pleasure playing with him.

“We know what we both want from each other, it clicks well. He is a smart player and I like to play with him.

“My fitness? I am getting back to my best, finally I am feeling good.

“It’s an amazing feeling. It’s coming, we’re coming and there are exciting times ahead. We are ready to attack.”

It was the lethal combination between Haaland and De Bruyne that proved too much for Luton and the pair were untouchable at times.

City boss Pep Guardiola was full of praise for his star men after the match and believes the players need each other to reach their highest levels.

He added: “What can I say? Really, really good. Erling is on fire and Kevin, the connection was perfect.

“Kevin needs players like Erling and Erling needs players like Kevin. We are not here without the other guys. A lot of credit for everyone.

“We won our last two games 1-0 and against Chelsea we played good in the second half but couldn’t win. One game at a time.

“The FA Cup is a really nice competition. We are one game away to go to Wembley again.”

Ghanaian companies target Africa under AfCFTA

0

Some Ghanaian companies have set their horizons beyond the shores of the country, making the entire African continent their target market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Ghana has made significant inroads into East Africa, notably Kenya and Tanzania being among the seven countries selected to participate in the Guided Trade Initiative (GTI) of the AfCFTA Secretariat.

The GTI would enable Ghana to export over 700 AfCFTA certified products like cosmetics, processed foods, beverages, coconut oil, shea butter and garments.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made this known when he delivered the 2024 message of the State of the Nation in Parliament on Tuesday, February 27.

“I would like to make special mention of Kasapreko Company Limited, one of our iconic local beverage manufacturers, which has commenced exports to the Kenyan market,” the President said, regarding the countries that had untilised the opportunity under GTI.

“It is a fact worth celebrating that many other Ghanaian companies now have set their horizons way beyond the shores of our country and see the entire African continent as the market to aim at,” he added.

The GTI is a pilot implementation phase aimed at ensuring acceleration in the operationalisation of AfCFTA by testing the institutional, legal and trade policy environment for the free trade agreement.

Together with the African Export- Import Bank (Afreximbank), the AfCFTA Secretariat also launched the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) to simplify and make transactions across the continent easy.

About 88.3 per cent of the Rules of Origin–a strategic framework for determining goods that qualify for preferential tariff treatment originating from the State parties under the AfCFTA– have also been negotiated.

The AfCFTA Secretariat has recognised Ghana as a shining example in the implementation of the continent’s free trade agreement.

Don’t deny adolescent people Family Planning services- public health nurse

0

Health workers have been urged to welcome and provide the best Family Planning (FP) options for adolescent people who would visit their facilities.

Mrs Esther Adjei, a Public Health Nurse at the Bono Regional Directorate of Health, gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani.

She stated the adolescents had every right to access FP services, and therefore reminded health workers as a matter of importance to protect the confidentiality of those teenagers who would access such services.

Though she could not immediately provide statistics, Mrs Adjei indicated teenage pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) were recording disturbing figures among young people in the region.

Mrs Adjei said because of an increasing trend of cases, parents must encourage their sexually- active adolescents to access the FP services as there were several best FP options safe for teenagers.

She mentioned poverty, lack of sexual education, child marriages as some of the remote causes of teenage pregnancies in the region, and called for intensified sexual reproductive health education in schools to address the challenge.

Mrs Adjei said many of the adolescents were into active sexual behaviours, adding it was only through public sexual education that they would understand their sexual rights to protect themselves.

In a related interview, Mr Richmond Atta-Kwasi, the Bono Regional Health Promotion Officer, said besides health facilities, the Regional Health Directorate had set up adolescent corners, where teenagers could visit and access sexual education and FP services.

He advised sexually active young people to feel free to access information at the adolescent corners to improve their sexual reproductive health conditions.

Mr. Atta-Kwasi added parents and guardians must endeavour to draw, especially their teenage girls closer, to provide them with basic sexual education to protect them against teenage and unwanted pregnancies.

Out-going Health Minister grateful to President Akufo-Addo for opportunity to serve Ghana

0

Mr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, the former Health Minister, has thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for giving him an opportunity to serve the country for seven years in that capacity.

Mr. Agyemang-Manu described the moment as “very historic” because no health minister had ever served for that length of time within the fourth republican democratic dispensation of the country.

He stated President Akufo-Addo called to inform him about strengthening governance and the need to inject some fresh blood into his team to further the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) chance of winning the Election 2024, hence the ministerial reshuffle.

Addressing a gathering of NPP supporters, council of elders, traditional rulers, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives at his residence at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Dormaa Central Municipality of Bono Region, Mr. Agyemang-Manu admitted President Akufo-Addo had the sole prerogative to appoint or relieve an appointee of his/her post.

“I want to thank the President for the opportunity to serve in his government. This is not the first ministerial reshuffle to happen, as it happened in ex-Presidents John Agyekum Kufour and John Dramani Mahama’s governments. I have not scandalized any person or acted inappropriately. The President took the decision out of his own,” he said.

Mr Agyemang-Manu said serving on behalf of the people meant strict accountability and thus required rendering an account of his stewardship to them.

He assured the people of ample time to participate in the Municipal Assembly’ meetings whenever possible for the continuous progress of the municipality.

Mr. Agyemang-Manu expressed appreciation to the constituents for their encouragement, saying that would strengthen his resolve to work harder to push development of the constituency to the next level if the electorate retained him in the 2024 parliamentary election.

Mahama’s timely intervention prevents Minority from boycotting 2024 SONA

0

The timely intervention of former President John Dramani Mahama, Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), prevented the NDC Parliamentary Minority Caucus from boycotting President Akufo-Addo’s penultimate State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament.

Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Deputy Minority Leader and NDC Member of Parliament for Ellembele, made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the presentation of the Address to Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr Buah said the members of the Minority were not happy with a lot of decisions the Government had taken.

He noted that the responsibility of Parliament was to take Bills through very rigorous processes before passing them into law, after which the President must assent to them.

“The President, for example, is holding the Witchcraft Bill and has signaled certain Bills that he intends not to sign, that is an affront to the Parliament of Ghana,” he said.

“And we wanted to really let him know that in this Parliament he can’t trample on us, we represent the people of Ghana.”

“But obviously after engagement with the Leader of our Party, we decided to come back. But at least he (the President) heard the message that we are not going to allow him to trample upon the independence of Parliament.”

At the time President Akufo-Addo arrived in Parliament House around 1000 hours, the Minority side of the Chamber was empty, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Majority Caucus was in full attendance.

The absence of the Minority at initial stage led to a delay of about one hour in commencement of business in the House.

However, after the behind-the-scenes negotiations, at about 1100 hours, the NDC Minority began trickling into the Chamber until around 1145 hours when their side of the House was full before the presentation of the SONA began.

Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution imposes an obligation on Members of Parliament (MPs), the Speaker and the Judiciary to receive the President’s Message on the State of the Nation.

Gold for Oil policy reduces forex pressures significantly-Pres. Akufo Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says that the Gold for Oil Programme worked well, significantly lowering forex constraints on bulk energy storage, transportation, and imports.

He said the strategy had allowed distribution and export companies to negotiate more competitive prices with suppliers.

He made the remarks when he delivered the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on Tuesday.

“What we can say about it is that the premiums dropped from one hundred and eighty to two hundred dollars per metric ton ($180–200/MT) to seventy dollars per metric ton ($70/MT) or less. This also resulted in reduced and stabilized prices at the pumps of between twelve and thirteen cedis (GH¢12–13) per liter for the whole of 2023, “he said.

The Gold for Oil policy, which was introduced in November 2022, is an innovative measure to exchange gold for petroleum products.

The government has maintained that the decision was meant to limit demand for dollars for the importation of petroleum products to slow the currency’s devaluation.

Ghana anticipated spending $400 million on regular petroleum product imports; however, the Central Bank was able to contribute $120 million.

Sharing more information about the oil and gas sector, the President stated that for many years, well-paying jobs in the industry were only filled by foreign nationals because the country lacked qualified workers in those fields.

He said the government was working to address some of the barriers that have prevented Ghanaians from fully participating in the oil and gas industry.

President Akufo-Addoi, however, emphasized that Ghana was making significant strides in building the human resource capacity of Ghanaians in the oil and gas sector.

“Last year, one hundred and fifty (150) young Ghanaians were trained and certified as mechanical maintenance technicians, electrical technicians, instrumentation technicians, and production process technicians up to industry standards. Additionally, five young Ghanaians underwent a ten-month welding inspector training program at the North Alberta Institute of Technology, Canada,” he said.

He claimed that Ghanaians have now been deployed as teachers at various technical institutions in Ghana and that some would soon fill high-paying roles in the country’s oil fields due to its trained and skilled personnel.
