District Level Election: NCCE engages identifiable Kwabre North groups in Afigya

0

The Afigya Kwabre North District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is engaging various identifiable groups ahead of the District Level Election (DLE) scheduled for Tuesday, December 19.

This is to ensure they participate actively in the exercise to elect assembly and unit committee members to spearhead development in their local areas, as stipulated in the decentralisation concept.

Led by Ms Jemimah Osei, the District Director, officials of the Directorate engaged churches, Muslim communities, Tailors and Dressmaking Associations and food vendors at Boamang and Denase, on the theme: “Empowering Communities.”

They took their audience through the importance of local elections and the roles of their representatives in lobbying for resource allocation at the district assembly level.

Most of the participants, however, expressed apathy in the local elections, citing non-performance on the part of their assembly members over the years as one of the reasons.

Ms Osei took time to convince them to rethink their abstinence in the interest of community development, reminding them that it was imperative for them to determine who they wanted to represent them.

After the elections, they had a responsibility to demand whatever the candidates promised to do for the community and urged them not to relinquish their civic right to vote.

“The District Level Elections are very important because you get to vote for people that will represent you at the local level,” she said.

“These individuals are integral parts of your communities, providing a channel for your needs to be advocated within the Assembly.”

She said elected assembly members served as channels through which assemblies conveyed development projects to communities through the lobbying and advocacy.

Electing such people should, therefore, be a priority for every citizen interested in the development of their local areas, she added.

A total of 466 candidates have filled their nomination to contest in the upcoming District and Unit Committee Elections in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency.

Out of the figure, 93 candidates who are competing for thirty electoral areas, only three persons are females, while 90 are males.

A total of 373 are also vying to be members of the various committees in their respective electoral area, out of which 50 are females as against 323 males.

“We have received our electoral materials from Accra, trained our officers who would be deployed to go and work on that day. So far everything is on course” he stated.

The Municipal Electoral Officer entreated Ghanaians to take keen interest and participate in the District and Unit Committee election as it could speed up development.

“Usually, people do not take the District and Unit Committee elections seriously but that is the only way we can bring development at the grassroot level so all eligible voters should get involved. Come Tuesday between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, just go and cast your vote quickly and go wherever you want to go” he emphasized.

NCCE engages public on upcoming District Level Elections

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region, has engaged various groups to whip up their interest in the upcoming District Level Elections.

The NCCE met artisans, Faith-Based Organisations and Community-Based Organisations among other youth groups to educate them on the need to turn-out massively to vote in the DLEs scheduled for Tuesday, December 19.

Mr Emmanuel Attah, Dormaa East NCCE Director, said the exercise was aimed at encouraging the people to participate in the impending elections since it was their civic duty as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

He said it was imperative for the electorates to consider the election relevant as it was a gateway to development in their communities.

“We must attach all seriousness to the assembly elections because it will help us to decide who leads our communities to speak on our behalf during assembly meetings to seek development,” he added.

Mr Attah also educated them on how to properly put their thumbprints on the ballot papers to help reduce the number of spoilt and rejected ballots.

He advised the people to desist from engaging in activities that could compromise the peace and stability in their communities before, during and after the elections.

We will continue to push boundaries to guarantee economic freedom- Finance Minister

0

Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance, says the Ministry and the Bank of Ghana must continue to push boundaries and work with equanimity to guarantee economic freedom and social mobility for all.

“Ultimately, I know that once we all continue to speak one language, nothing we plan to do will be impossible,” he said.

Mr Ofori-Atta speaking at the Bank’s End of Year Cocktail said over the next 12 months, “We have the chance to build hope and hitch all our wagons together to take our community across the Jordan.”

He said in these nearly seven years, they had worked together to deliver near-impossible feats from the establishment of the Consolidated Bank of Ghana to the operationalisation of the Development Bank and the raising of over $10 billion in the Eurobond market, among many others.

He said undoubtedly the recent global upheavals put the economy under strain, yet the collaborative spirit between the two institutions had never been stronger.

He said together, they have strived to reset the financial architecture and despite the challenges over the last three years, I am proud that we have “turned the corner” toward a more robust and transformed economy.

“Indeed, amidst these trials, our united front in managing the Bank’s balance sheet has been nothing short of heroic,” he added.

Mr Ofori-Atta said economic growth had rebounded, the exchange rate was more stable, and interest rates were softening.

More importantly, the Ghana Statistical Services reported earlier that inflation has slowed down to 26.4 per cent in November 2023 from 35.2 per cent in October 2023.

The Minister said in effect, the Bank and the Treasury’s collaborative efforts had halved inflation (from 54.1 per cent in December 2022) in under 12 months.

“But while it is welcome news that prices are no longer rising as quickly, we know many people continue to face severe cost of living pressures. So, we must stay the course to continue to get inflation back down to single digits as quickly as possible,” he said.

Mr Ofori-Atta said they must never forget that their work was vital not just for the present but also for the future of the country.

He said the journey was far from over, and the road ahead would require continued perseverance and unity.

“I am confident that we will not only prevail but also propel Ghana towards a more prosperous future,” he said.

He said they saw earlier in the year, for instance, how the publication of the Bank’s 2022 Annual report led to a quite frankly timid debate about the competence of the Governor and the Bank’s leadership team.

“Simply put, we have a lot of work ahead of us, and we cannot afford to lose our focus,” he added.

NCCE disappointed over low women participation in DLEs

0

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has expressed disappointment and concern over the low participation of women in the 2023 District Level Elections (DLEs) slated for December 19.

It said despite several efforts to promote women participation in governance and decision-making processes to bridge the gender gap, promote sustainable development, both at the national and local levels, the task to getting women aspire for leadership positions remained a herculean challenge.

Mr Mawuli Agbenu, the Upper East Regional Director of the Commission who expressed these concerns in an interview with the Ghana News Agency was reacting to the small number of women aspirants in this year’s election in the region.

Statistics from the Electoral Commission (EC) revealed that no woman had filed to contest in this year’s election in three out of the 15 Municipal and District Assemblies across the region namely; Garu, Tempane and Nabdam.

Apart from that, despite a total of 949 people filing to contest in the District Assembly elections in the region, only 25 are women.

Similarly, only 156 women out of the 1,936 have filed to contest in the Unit Committee elections across the region.

This, the Regional Director stressed, was, “woeful and we don’t even know how many of them will win” but encouraged Ghanaians to vote for more women in the upcoming election to increase the representation of women in decision making structure at the local level.

He indicated that the participation of women in decision making process was not only crucial to addressing the numerous challenges confronting the growth and progress of women and children, but necessary ingredient to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr Agbenu said apart from the financial burden which was compelling many women not to put themselves up for leadership positions, there were some sociocultural norms and barriers that needed to be removed to strengthen and empower women towards taking up leadership roles in governance.

“When women are not represented at the decision-making table, their concerns, and interests and that of their children’s are mostly not considered.

“Apart from that, more than half of the workforce of the informal sector in this country are women and if they are not involved in decision making, it means that their economic opportunities and interests are not being taken care of, forcing them to remain in poverty,” he lamented.

He said while the NCCE would continue to intensify education for more women participation in governance, it was imperative for the government to honour the 1992 Constitutional provision by appointing more women into governance.

Mr Joachim Elbazar, Nabdam District Director of the NCCE, told the GNA that women play pivotal role in shaping families and society while contributing to the country`s economy, but their low participation in politics, particularly in the DLE, was defeating the advocacy for women’s empowerment.

“It is time women took courage to contest for positions to lead and not see themselves as followers all the time because they can be better leaders as well, and I call on them to come out strongly in opportunities like this to make a case for themselves,” he stated.

Reece James’ injury misery continues! The Chelsea star is anticipated to be out until at least February after suffering a new hamstring injury.

Reece James’ injury misery continues, as the Chelsea star is anticipated to be out until at least February after suffering another hamstring injury.

The full-back started against Everton last Sunday for the first time since November 25 but could only last 26 minutes due to a fresh hamstring injury. According to reports, James will now consult a hamstring specialist to assess the extent of his latest injury setback. Given his recurrent hamstring problems, the recovery process may be complicated.

James has made eight Premier League appearances this season as he has had to sit out the bulk of the matches with another hamstring issue. He also missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to damage to his knee ligament. James has struggled to maintain a consistent run of matches due to various injuries, with his last stretch of five consecutive full games in the Premier League occurring between the end of the 2021-22 campaign and the start of the following season.

WHAT CHELSEA SAID

The London club put out a statement confirming the injury, which read: “Captain Reece James has undergone medical assessment following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Everton. The defender was withdrawn during the first half at Goodison Park, and scan results have confirmed a hamstring injury. Reece will now begin his rehabilitation programme at Cobham.”

James has missed 35 matches due to hamstring injuries since the 2021-22 campaign. Additionally, he has missed 28 matches due to muscle issues, illness, and two knee injuries, with the latter sidelining him for 18 matches in the 2022-23 season.

Pochettino’s injury list keeps on growing with Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Trevor Chalobah, Malo Gusto and Carney Chukwuemeka already on the treatment table. This forced the manager to ask for more new players in the January transfer window, despite the club already having spent £435 million ($545m) in the summer on signings.

Chelsea are looking forward to a busy two-week stretch as they will play five matches until the New Year and James’ injury further adds to their trouble. They will next face Sheffield United on December 16, before they take on Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Mateo Kovacic outlines what Manchester City needs to accomplish without their 19-goal striker.

0

Mateo Kovacic has revealed what he is expecting of every Manchester City player in the absence of 19-goal striker Erling Haaland.

The top scorer for the reigning champions, who is currently recovering from a stress fracture in his foot, was not available for Sunday’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Luton. Despite this setback, Kovacic is optimistic about the team’s chances of winning games if each player steps up their game.

The reigning champions secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Luton on Sunday but were without their injured top scorer, who is currently nursing a stress fracture in his foot. However, Kovacic is not too concerned, as he believes that the squad has the potential to keep winning matches if every individual raises their level of play in the absence of key players.

WHAT KOVACIC SAID

Speaking to reporters, Kovacic said: “Obviously, we missed key players like Erling and Kevin [De Bruyne]. It’s never easy when you miss such big players.

“But they are not in the moment here, we need everybody to give 10, 20 percent more like we did (on Sunday) and then we can win games.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The victory against Luton ended City’s four-match winless streak in the Premier League, which included draws against Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and a loss against Aston Villa. In the absence of Haaland, De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku – Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish played pivotal roles in the turnaround at Kenilworth Park, scoring in the second half to secure the much-needed victory. “The team was confident because we were playing good,” said Kovacic. “We had not bad results, some draws where we could have won. This is football sometimes, then it’s about how you come back. Today we came back in a good way. A big three points. We showed overall great football, especially in the first half we played very well, we found a lot of players in the pockets which is what we want. When you do your thing and insist, the goals come. We could have scored even more, but I’m happy with the three points.”

DID YOU KNOW?

There have been suggestions that Haaland might be staring at a lengthy period on the sidelines as Alf Inge Haaland sold his son in the Fantasy Premier League.

WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?

Pep Guardiola might be looking to rest his key players when they take on Red Star in the Champions League as they have already qualified for the knockout stage as group leaders. All eyes will be on their next Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday, as a win over the Londoners could bring them to within a point of league leaders Liverpool, with the teams above them not playing until Sunday.

Business, Employment Assistance Programme: 10,000 businesses, 20,000 youth to benefit

Some 10,000 businesses owned by young Ghanaian entrepreneurs, as well as 20,000 youth, are to benefit from the Government’s Business and Employment Assistance Programme, being implemented by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

It forms part of the Government’s intervention to cushion young Ghanian entrepreneurs and provide more job opportunities for the youth in the midst of the global economic meltdown that adversely affected many businesses.

The programme would aid Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) to grow and support skilled workers financially.

It would also enable more youth to expand their businesses and pay salaries of those they would employ.

Speaking at the launch of the programme in Sunyani, on Monday, Vice President Bawumia emphasised the importance of the youth to the national economy, and reiterated government’s commitment to providing more opportunities to cushion those already in business and create more jobs for others.

“I am particularly excited about the relief this initiative will provide to the Ghanaian youth,” he said.

“The youth of this country are our greatest resource, and it is our collective duty to ensure that they are well positioned to make significant contributions to the economic development of our dear nation.”

The Business and Employment Assistance Programme is the latest of the many job creation and business support interventions the Government is implementing through the YEA, to support the Ghanaian youth.

Dr Bawumia mentioned several youth interventions being implemented by the Government, including the YouStart programme, which had been piloted successfully with GHS100 million disbursed this year alone.

With other interventions, 21,000 youth have been engaged under the YEA’s Community Police Assistants and Community Health Workers Module with 2,000 engaged under the Youth in ICT Module, in collaboration with the Ghana Digital Centre Ltd.

Also, through YEA’s partnership with the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, 15,000 Ghanaian youth had been trained in business skills, corporate compliances, and financial sustainability practices, while the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is also engaging 20,000 youth under Phase Two of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ).

Additionally, the YEA, in partnership with the Ghana TVET Service and the Ghana Energy Commission, would train 20,000 artisans as plumbers, tilers, masons, beauticians, fabricators, glazing workers, carpenters, and electricians.

The beneficiaries would be duly certified after the training and provided with the requisite tools and equipment to set up their own  enterprises.

Mr Kofi Agyapong, the Chief Executive Officer of the YEA, said the YEA would continue to strengthen existing modules and create more opportunities in the Agency’s quest to create jobs for the youth.
