43 Ghanaians die of TB everyday – WHO

0

About 123 Ghanaians fall ill of tuberculosis (TB) daily and 43 of them lose their lives because of the disease, the World Health Organisation, has said.

In 2021 alone, a total of 45,000 people fell ill of TB and 15,700 lost their lives to the disease.

The WHO further indicates that, a total of 1.3 million people died of TB in 2022 globally, making the disease the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19 and HIV and AIDS.

The frightening statistics have brought researchers and scientists from across Africa for a two-week short course to ask the relevant questions and put together ideas to address challenges in Tuberculosis (TB) management and policy formulation.

Tuberculosis, the WHO pointed out, remained a significant health burden, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, and data from the region were particularly alarming.

Professor Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), speaking at the opening of the course, noted that, the critical substantial contribution to case notifications and mortality were evident and called for action.

In 2021 alone, she said a staggering 40 percent of TB cases were either unreported or undiagnosed, while patients with resistant strains also perished.

African scientists, such as medical officers, disease surveillance officers, biostatisticians, physician assistants and laboratory scientists are attending the course which is being funded by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a research and pharmaceutical company, in collaboration with KNUST.

Prof. Dickson pointed out that the pivotal role that academic institutions played in TB management could not be overemphasized.

There was, therefore, the need to continue to provide support to early and mid-career researchers who were the driving force behind TB research to sharpen their skills and expertise so as to be able to confront the disease.

She said though notable progress of combating the TB disease in Ghana, there were still some challenges which called for concerted efforts to eradicate it across the sub region.

Prof. Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Principal Investigator for the Clinical Research, giving an overview of the disease, said studies conducted on TB in Ghana alone by himself and a team of research scientists revealed issues such as pregnancy, poverty and limited access to health, as risk factors.

He said per statistics, TB remained a public health concern within Ghana and Africa at large, adding that, the disease would continue “to be with us”.

It was, therefore, necessary to build capacities of young talented scientists who sought answers to research questions on tuberculosis to be able to hammer on ideas.

Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, Presidential Advisor on Health, said TB was curable, however, it had remained a global threat.

“TB is one of the most important micro-bacterial diseases of public health concern in Ghana.

To be able to end tuberculosis, researchers need to improve their understanding of the disease, epidemiology, genetic diversity within the causative agent and laboratory diagnosis among others”, he stated.

The government, he noted, through the National TB Control Programme, was vigorously pursuing high quality directly observed treatment short courses for care givers.

Additionally, there were ongoing expansion and enhancement strategies to help strengthen health systems to improve human resources and financing, management, service delivery and information systems towards combating the disease.

Environmental Health officer calls for screening of Coconut sellers

0

Mr Delawson Asafo, Environmental Health officer for Asuogyaman, has called for medical screening for coconut sellers to ensure consumer safety.
He noted that the coconut trade has become a huge business, which must be regulated just as other food vendors were screened and regulated in line with consumer safety.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA, he suggested that the Food and Drugs Authority and the Environmental Health Department work together to design a regulatory procedure to ensure hygiene and food safety.

He noted that from the plucking of the coconut to the selling itself required the use of the hands, which could cause contamination leading to health risk for the consumer.

Ms Yvonne Abayateye, a coconut consumer, told GNA that the appearance of the sellers and disregard for hygiene was worrying and they needed to be regulated.

“Their appearance, surroundings and the knife used to cut the coconut are always dirty, yet people buy because of the health benefits.”

Regional dialogue on sustainable economic recovery held in Tamale

0

A regional dialogue on sustainable economic recovery has been held in Tamale to gather ideas and establish a practical approach towards sustainable economic development in the country.

The day’s event, organised by the Economic Governance Platform, on the theme: “Building an Economy Beyond IMF Bailouts: Pragmatic Options for the Ghana We need”, brought together representatives of civil society organisations, traditional authorities, religious leaders, and the media amongst other stakeholders.

Mr Abdul Karim Mohammed, National Coordinator, Economic Governance Platform, speaking during the event, said it became necessary since successive governments were adamant in organising a national dialogue on development of the country.

Mr Mohammed said, “There is the need for a sustainable pathway towards recovery and as part of that, the Economic Governance Platform has engaged several stakeholders and people in government. Our main prescription has been that we should have a national consensus on the development pathway.

He expressed regret for the lukewarm attitudes of governments towards organising such dialogues and said “Unfortunately, our government has not organised this national consensus or national conversation. We have taken it upon ourselves to engage citizens from all walks of life and we are doing this across the nation.”

He said after the regional dialogue across the country, the organisation would put the ideas together as a citizens’ blueprint, which would be the development pathway for the country.

He was confident that the citizens’ blueprint would guide the country’s development, make her more sustainable and grounded, and as well prevent her from running to the IMF.

Professor Elliot Alhassan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor-Elect, University for Development Studies, who chaired the event, commended the organizers of the dialogue for their patriotism and urged government to take interest in the ongoing regional dialogues.

Meanwhile, the thematic areas that the participants discussed included governance and anti-corruption, macro-fiscal (revenue, expenditure, debt management and monetary policy), agriculture, extractives and energy, trade and industry (EEAL) sector, social spending on education, health and social protection, ICT and arts.

NPP is under Akufo-Addo’s authority; either his desire or you’re gone – Asamoa Buaben

0

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter, has claimed that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has essentially seized control of the party.

According to the former NPP Communications Director, the president’s wants and preferences outweigh those of the party, rendering anyone who disagree with the president “useless” inside the party.

Asamoa’s words originate from his recent decision to endorse and campaign for independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen, along with three other senior NPP members, Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique.

As a consequence of their actions, the NPP has formally expelled them from the party, citing their flagrant violation of the party’s Constitution.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda on Citi TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, Mr Asamoa expressed deep disappointment with the current state of the NPP, lamenting the stark contrast between the party he joined years ago and the one it has become today.

He attributed the party’s decline to rampant factionalism and the overbearing influence of the executive branch, led by President Akufo-Addo.

Asamoa decried the president’s dominance over the party, stating, “The NPP that I knew in the beginning is not the NPP that exists now. The party has become divided by heavy factionalism. Literally, it’s become divided by the executive. The government has taken over. The personality of the president is overbearing and he controls that party.”

He further emphasized the detrimental impact of the president’s control, declaring, “That means that if you don’t do the president’s [bidding] if you are not in the president’s good books, you are not useful to the party. That is the bottom line. That is what is happening.”

DR Congo: UN mission to withdraw peacekeepers

0

The United Nations stabilisation mission in Congo (MONUSCO) has signed an agreement to remove its 15,000 soldiers after nearly two decades in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The agreements were signed on Tuesday by Congolese Foreign Minister Christophe Lutundula and the commander of MONUSCO.

Lutundula said on national television that the agreement represented the end of a relationship “that has proven its limits in a context of perpetual war, without the longed-for peace being restored to eastern Congo.”

Violence in eastern Congo

Eastern Congo is in the grip of a decades-long conflict fought by dozens of armed groups, some backed by DRC’s neighbours.

With presidential and parliamentary elections coming up on December 20, the conflict has taken centre stage.

In September, incumbent President Félix Tshisekedi called for an accelerated withdrawal of the UN peacekeepers.

The UN mission in the region has often caused tensions amongst the local population, with protests against MONUSCO and others at times turning deadly.

At the end of August, a crackdown by Congolese troops on anti-UN demonstrations resulted in nearly 50 deaths

Failed missions

With the Congolese frustrated at what they feel to be a lack of protection from the rebel groups, the Congolese government last month also directed the East African regional force to leave the country by December.

The force, composed of troops from Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda, has been deployed in the area since late 2022 to help end the fighting. The government alleges a “lack of satisfactory results on the ground”.

The withdrawal of MONUSCO’s forces was not given a firm timeline in Tuesday’s announcement, with observers saying that any acceleration is unlikely before the end of the current election cycle.

Brazilian FA insists that military police “strictly adhered to” security preparations for the Argentina match, following fan rioting that led to claims of Lionel Messi’s “tragedy.”

0

The Rio de Janeiro military police, who were attacked by Argentina’s top player Lionel Messi, have been defended by the Brazilian Football Association (CBF).

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Albiceleste captain was vocal in his condemnation of authorities at the Maracana stadium, accusing them of “beating people” before claiming that the night “could have ended in tragedy”. Police could be seen violently responding to those who allegedly booed the Brazilian national anthem, with one fan forced to leave, head bloodied, on a stretcher. The match resumed after 30 minutes, with the visitors edging a 1-0 victory.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is not the first time that the Brazil-Argentina rivalry has reared its ugly head. Earlier this month, Boca Junior fans were met with similar resistance on Rio’s Copacabana beach, marring the build up to a Copa Libertadores final eventually won by local team Fluminense. Regarding Tuesday night’s altercations, however, the CBF have stood by those accused.

WHAT THE CBF SAID

The federation wrote in a statement: “It is important to clarify that the organisation and planning of the match was carried out carefully and strategically by the CBF, together and in constant dialogue with all the competent public bodies, especially the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro. All the planning for the match, especially the action and security plans, were discussed with the public authorities in Rio de Janeiro in meetings between the parties. CBF therefore reaffirms that the action, security and operation plan for the match, as approved by the RJ Military Police and other authorities, was strictly adhered to.”

WHAT NEXT?

After Nicolas Otamendi’s 63rd minute goal sealed Brazil’s third straight defeat, Fernando Diniz’s side dropped to an incredible sixth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table. Off the pitch, however, it remains to be seen whether authorities did actually adhere to security plans in the eyes of FIFA, who could respond with a sanction.

Agent Bernardo Silva, ! Man City star indicates strategy to persuade £105 million-rated Joao Neves to choose the Premier League winners over fierce rivals Man United

0

Bernardo Silva has disclosed that he would attempt to persuade Portugal teammate Joao Neves to choose Manchester City over Manchester United.

The Portuguese player stated that he would attempt to persuade Benfica midfielder Neves, valued at £105 million, to choose Manchester City over United, their bitter rivals, if given the opportunity.

Old Trafford has been linked to the 19-year-old, but the Portuguese team is hesitant to part ways with their top player in the next transfer window. According to reports, the player’s contract contains a €120 million (£105 million/$131 million) release clause that went into effect in the summer.

Neves graduated from the Eagles’ youth academy and made his senior debut for the club in 2022. In the ongoing season, he has appeared in 18 matches, recording one goal and one assist. He received his first national team call-up in October this year and made his international debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in an international friendly.

Erik ten Hag is on the lookout for a quality midfield option after missing several key United players due to injury, including Casemiro, who has been ruled out with a thigh injury until January.

WHAT BERNARDO SILVA SAID

Speaking to reporters, Bernardo said: “If I can, I’ll make a move for Joao Neves to go to Man City instead of Man United, of course.”

WHAT NEXT FOR JOAO NEVES?

For now, the teenager remains committed to Benfica and will be next seen in action for the Portuguese giants as they next take on Famalicao in a Liga Portugal clash on Saturday. Manchester United, meanwhile, will be back on Premier League duty against Everton a day later.

Lionel Messi confesses he played through injury in Argentina’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Brazil, accusing police of ‘hitting people’ during nasty pre-match scenes.

0

Amidst the police brutality in the stands during Argentina’s close victory over Brazil, Lionel Messi disclosed that he suffered from an adductor ailment during the match.

When Albiceleste fans were reportedly jeering the Brazilian national anthem, the authorities reacted angrily, to the point where custodian Emi Martinez attempted to join in. There was a 30-minute wait before the game began as the Argentina players made the decision to head back to the locker room. Messi disclosed that this was a planned move since the unsightly events at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium had an impact on his players.

WHAT MESSI SAID ABOUT PRE-MATCH VIOLENCE

Asked by TyC Sports about the brutal reaction from police before the match, the Albiceleste skipper responded: “Obviously, how bad. We saw how they were hitting people, as happened in the final of the Libertadores, again repressing people with batons. There were players who had families there. You think about your family, you don’t really know what is happening and you are more focused on that than on playing a game. We saw how they were beating people, something awful could have happened. When everything calmed down we decided to go inside, ask how the relatives were, find out a little about everything. Then we went out.”

WHAT MESSI SAID ABOUT CARRYING AN INJURY

The 36-year-old lasted 78 minutes before being brought off for Angel Di Maria, and he hinted that this was due to a knock he had been playing through all game, adding: “[It was] an adductor discomfort. It was my last game [in 2023], I have time to get well and start the year with everything. I’m going to prepare to have a great year, have a great preseason and start from scratch.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite all the noise ahead of the feisty encounter, Messi and Co. held their nerve and saw out a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Nicolas Otamendi. Lionel Scaloni’s side therefore cement their place at the top of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table, consigning Brazil to a dismal sixth-place standing. Despite such a significant victory, though, Scaloni appeared to question his future at the helm after full time.

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?

As he alluded to in his post-match interview, the Argentina and Inter Miami star has played his last game for a significant time, meaning he now enjoys a rest period ahead of a return to MLS action next year. It remains to be seen whether a friendly against eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr is still on the cards, after Miami refuted such arrangements on Tuesday.

German player Leroy Sane apologises to supporters following his emotional outburst during Austria’s humiliating defeat, as Julian Nagelsmann’s problems persist ahead of the home Euros

0

After Germany lost to Austria once more, Leroy Sane expressed regret to the supporters for receiving a red card.

The Germany and Bayern Munich player expressed regret to the supporters following his dismissal during Tuesday’s friendly encounter between his country and Austria.

After pushing a player in the face on the pitch, the winger was dismissed in the 49th minute, and Julian Nagelsmann’s team lost 2-0 while he was away.

Former Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer handed Austria the lead in the 29th minute and Christoph Baumgartner then wrapped up the win for the hosts in the 73rd minute.

This was Germany’s sixth defeat of the calendar year and their second loss since former Bayern Munich manager Nagelsmann took charge of the team.

After the match, Sane took to Twitter to issue an apology, which read: “An evening to forget in Vienna. I apologized to my teammates in the dressing room for the action. Despite all my emotion and ambition, this can’t happen to me, especially in our current situation. A big sorry to our fans too. We have a lot of work ahead of us to make 2024 a successful year for us.”

Despite the setback in the international friendly, the 27-year-old has enjoyed success at club level this season as he has scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 18 matches for Bayern Munich. He will next be seen in action for his club on Saturday as Bayern take on FC Koln in the Bundesliga.

President Erdogan of Turkey Backs Upcoming Hamas-Israeli Agreement Regarding Gaza Hostages

0

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, has stated that he is in favour of a possible deal between Israel and Hamas involving the release of captives in Gaza. Erdogan reaffirmed that Qatar and Turkey are actively participating in the discussions.

The agreement negotiated by Qatar calls for the release of over fifty people who were taken prisoner by Hamas during an attack on Israel on October 7. An unknown number of Palestinian women and children detained by Israel would be freed in return. There are reports that a four-day ceasefire is being considered as part of the agreement.

Speaking in Algiers alongside Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s ongoing coordination with Qatari authorities on this potential deal. Unlike the United States and the European Union, Turkey does not designate Hamas as a terrorist group and maintains close ties with the political leadership of the militant group based in Doha.

Despite this diplomatic effort, Erdogan reiterated his strong criticism of Israel, condemning the country for “targeting places that should be protected under all circumstances, such as hospitals, places of worship, and schools.” He labeled Israel’s actions as “unconscionable and barbaric” and stressed the need for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, prioritizing the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.

President Tebboune echoed Erdogan’s sentiments, emphasizing the necessity of Israeli leaders being tried in the International Criminal Court for their actions in Gaza. Erdogan has previously advocated for Israel to face international legal proceedings for what he described as “war crimes.”

In addition to discussing regional issues, Erdogan and Tebboune signed 12 agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Algeria and Turkey during Erdogan’s visit. These agreements cover various sectors, including gas cooperation between Turkish energy company BOTAS and Algeria’s state oil and gas firm Sonatrach, as well as memoranda of understanding on trade, technology, and health.

Algeria, as Turkey’s fourth-largest gas supplier after Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, plays a significant role in their economic relationship. Both countries aspire to boost their trade volume from the current $3 billion to $10 billion over the next five years. This visit follows President Tebboune’s state visit to Turkey in July, making him one of the first foreign leaders hosted by Erdogan after his reelection in May.
