An inquest heard that Manchester United and England star Sir Bobby Charlton died as a result of an unintentional fall at a care facility in Knutsford.

Sir Bobby died on 21 October at the age of 86 at Macclesfield General Hospital, eliciting condolences from throughout the football world.

An inquest into his death was held at Cheshire Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, when it was revealed that he had been residing at The Willows nursing home in Knutsford, which specialises in dementia care.

Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire, concluded that Sir Bobby’s death was accidental. The hearing was told that he struck a window sill and “possibly a radiator” after losing his balance when standing up from his chair.

Lionel Messi is not going to the Far East! Inter Miami has confirmed the cancellation of its China excursion during the MLS offseason due to ‘unforeseen circumstances.’

0

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will not be visiting the Far East this offseason, as the MLS team cancelled their China tour on Wednesday.

The Herons were supposed to face Qingdao Hainiu and Chengdu Rongcheng in the Chinese Super League on November 5 and 8, respectively, until the tour was called off earlier this week due to alleged concerns with its promoters. Miami’s offseason preparations have been put off owing to “unforeseen circumstances in China,” according to the MLS team, who announced the cancellation on Wednesday.

A statement on the club’s website read: “The tour promoter, NSN, has informed Inter Miami CF of the cancellation of its China Tour due to unforeseen circumstances in China. Inter Miami’s ambition remains to expand its global reach by playing in front of incredible fans from across the globe; the Club will continue to explore future opportunities with NSN to achieve this goal.”

Argentine journalist Gaston Edul has expanded on the decision, reporting on Monday that both games would be cancelled due to “bureaucratic and commercial issues”. In any case, it means fans in China will not be treated to a view of Messi live in the flesh, less than a week after he was awarded an eighth Ballon d’Or. The Argentine made a huge impact after joining Miami upon the expiration of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain in June, scoring 11 goals in his first 14 appearances across all competitions, but was powerless to prevent the team from finishing second-bottom of the Eastern Conference on 34 points.

WHAT NEXT FOR MIAMI? With the postseason tour cancelled and having missed out on the playoffs, Messi and Co. will remain in the United States ahead of the 2024 MLS campaign.

Romelu Lukaku faces criticism for his lack of “respect” for Inter Milan following the Juventus transfer drama, while Piero Ausilio asserts that the Chelsea loanee attempted to “hide” from phone calls.

0

Piero Ausilio, the sports director of Inter Milan, has accused Romelu Lukaku, a striker for Roma, of “hiding” from phone calls and acting without “respect”.

Following Chelsea’s decision to declare him surplus to requirements, the Belgian quickly took centre stage in the summer transfer market news. Lukaku looked all but likely to make a permanent return to Inter, the team he helped end an 11-year drought for the Scudetto back in 2021, but he altered course at the last minute and started negotiations with Juventus. The attacker finally joined Roma on loan when Inter withdrew from talks in the face of widespread fan demonstrations in Turin, but Ausilio’s comments on Radio Serie A imply that there is still animosity in Milan.

The Inter sporting director said: “I prefer not to talk about a player currently at another club, I have never done that in recent months. I say that I like to think about the present and the future, Lukaku is part of the past: with him we won a Scudetto, lost two finals and he brought us an important capital gain. What happened? I prefer not to talk about it.

“All I’m saying is that there has to be politeness and respect: things were obviously going on, but at a certain point these conditions came to an end. There are deals that do not get done, but if there is respect it is never a problem. When, on the other hand, one hides or sends replies via other people, then one thinks about moving on. For me it is a closed chapter since July 8, there are no regrets. The famous phone call to Lukaku? It was something decided, nothing special. I told Romelu what I thought, after I hadn’t been able to contact him for a while.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: After Lukaku’s deal to Roma was wrapped up on transfer deadline day, so far it is Ausilio and Inter who have had the last laugh. Simone Inzaghi’s side sit two points clear at the Serie A summit, with their last win coming against the capital club on Sunday. A solitary Marcus Thuram strike was the difference at San Siro, where Lukaku was greeted by a ferocious reception from the home crowd.

WHAT NEXT FOR LUKAKU? Roma currently sit ninth in the league, five points off the Champions League places, and will look to bounce back against Lecce on Sunday. Lukaku, meanwhile, will be hoping to add to his league tally of five goals in eight appearances and end his two-game goalscoring drought.

Luis Diaz of Liverpool makes his first public remarks since his father was abducted, and authorities are investigating the possibility that he was brought out of Colombia illegally.

In his first public remark since the incident, Liverpool striker Luis Diaz posted an Instagram story promoting a march in support of his father who was abducted.

The post demanded a march in support of Diaz’s father Luis Manuel and a “free him now” from the “whole community” in Barranca, Colombia, where he was born.

The event took place on Tuesday afternoon, local time, with supporters lining the streets with white balloons and chanting for Luis Manuel’s release.

Diaz’s reposting of the advertisement marks his first public statement since news broke of his parents’ kidnapping on Sunday.

It is thought that both Luis Manuel and Diaz’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, were out buying watermelons when they were taken by four armed men on motorcycles. Marulanda was later released, but Luis Manuel’s whereabouts remain unknown.

The latest information from Colombia has sparked new fears that Diaz’s father may no longer be in the country.

The Daily Mail reports that police are considering the possibility that Luis Manuel may have been smuggled over the border into Venezuela, as patrol searches continue across the nearby Perija mountain range.

However, Colombia’s national police director General William Salamanca – who joined the search on Monday – has quelled notions that Diaz’s father may be located in Venezuela due to the difficulty of crossing said range.

Given the ongoing situation, Diaz was absent from Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. The Colombian was honoured by Diogo Jota during the match with a touching celebration tribute, who also spoke on the player’s “unimaginable” situation.

Erik ten Hag is “certain” he can turn around Manchester United’s fortunes in spite of the team’s dismal start to the season and growing rumours about his future.

0

With talk about his position growing, Erik ten Hag thinks “it’s only a matter of time” until he turns around Manchester United’s fortunes.

The Red Devils suffered their eighth loss in 14 games this season in all competitions when they fell to Manchester City in another derby last weekend. In a letter to the supporters before of the club’s Carabao Cup match against Newcastle United on Wednesday, the Dutch manager of the squad has stated that he is “certain” of a better future.

WHAT THEY SAID: “At Manchester United, every game involves high stakes,” Ten Hag wrote in the United Review. “Every single day, there is pressure on everybody involved with this club, but those demands and standards are a challenge which we must always meet head-on. While this has not been the start to the season that we had all hoped for, I am certain that we have the talent and attitude as a collective to move in the right direction. I believe that it is only a matter of time before we are showing our true selves. It will come, I am certain. I continue to believe in these players and am confident we will improve after a difficult start to the season.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: While senior players such as captain Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have faced flak for failing to rise to the occasion, Ten Hag has come under scrutiny for his questionable team selection. It has been suggested that the Dutchman could face the sack if results don’t improve quickly, but he is confident that the players are all still pulling in the same direction.

“I continue to believe in these players and am confident we will improve after a difficult start to the season,” he said. “Nobody at this club enjoys defeat, particularly in a Manchester derby like last Sunday, but everything we have achieved together so far has been built on looking forward, which means we have to move on quickly from what happens, whether it is positive or negative. There is no point in feeling sorry for ourselves at this moment in time. We have never spent too long enjoying our victories, so we will not spend too much time thinking about our losses. We must always look forward, together.”

Trade consultant advises stakeholders to enhance Ghana’s involvement in trade

0

Mrs Pamela Serena Nantogmah, a trade consultant, has advised stakeholders to uphold individual responsibilities to enhance Ghana’s participation in international trade.

She said it was the synergy of the various stakeholders that would propel Ghana as an emerging state in international trade.

“If the customs officers are doing their checks with the systems they work with, which is the ICUMS they are able to detect and send alerts, FDA is doing their checks to make sure that chemicals are not put in goods being exported and all that, it will propel Ghana,” she added.

Mrs Nantogmah said this during a training organised by the EU-funded Compete Ghana programme, under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The 10 training modules are to ensure a smooth implementation of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

The Compete Ghana Programme offers technical assistance to MOTI in the implementation of the EPA and related accompanying measures.

Mrs Nantogmah said disputes could not be avoided but could be managed, stating that, “if we are doing our checks well and making sure that goods, we send to the EU market meet the required standards, then we can compete at the international market.”

She said so far, the training modules had been of much relevance to the stakeholders, indicating that the modules gave a wider perspective and understanding to what they were already engaged in.

Mr Nicholas Gebara, the Team Leader of the Compete Ghana Programme, said it was vital to build capacities among stakeholders in the trade space as far as trade defence and dispute settlements in trade were concerned.

He urged the participants to avail themselves of the skills and knowledge to be able to develop and drive the enhancement of Ghana’s participation in international trade.

Mr Ibrahim Bawumia Abdul Rahman, Planning, Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Ghana International Trade Commission, said as countries entered into partnership agreements, there were rules and regulations for misunderstanding, for disputes to be settled.

He added that, “when that happens, the WTO comes to play, and that one of the key objectives is security and objectivity, so people are actually guaranteed of redress during issues relating to unfair trading.”

Mr Rahman said going forward, there was the need to work together with the countries they were in partnership with to ensure that disputes were resolved at the primary levels.

Gomoa West NPP Women’s Wing re-launched with vision to recapture Parliamentary seat

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Women’s Wing in Gomoa West Constituency has been re-launched with a new vision to support the party to recapture the parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections.

The re-launch on the theme: “Breaking the eight and taking back our seat; the role of women,” also coincided with a breast cancer screening and treatment for both females and males.

More than 200 people benefited from the exercise organized by the HIKI Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to create awareness about the dangers of breast cancer which posed threat, particularly to women.

Speaking at the programme, Mrs Charlotte Adjoa Antwi, Central Regional NPP Women’s Organizer, said the re-launch of the wing had given hope and vision to the women to work harder to help win the 2024 election.

She said it had also rekindled the hope of women in the constituency to help explore more opportunities to win supporters for the party by preaching the good news about the government to the people in the constituency.

Mrs Antwi said women had a role to play to inspire others outside to join the party to win in 2024.

She said the government had rolled out many pro-poor programmes to benefit Ghanaians, especially women and children, and that it was the responsibility of women to intensify their campaign to motivate others to rally behind the party to break the eight.

The Regional Women Organizer charged the women to take the campaign to all polling stations highligting the benefits Ghanaians enjoyed, adding that although the economic crisis was not yet over, everything possible was being done to salvage the economy.

She commended the Gomoa West Constituency Women’s Organiser, Mrs Hikmatu Yahaya Iddi, for her hard work and dedication for mobilizing the women in the constituency to help the party break the jinx to win the 2024 election.

Mrs Antwi assured the Women’s wing that the government was working hard to digitalize the payment of school feeding outstanding bills to enable them to settle their creditors.

She urged them to work extra hard as they did in 2016 elections, which assisted the NPP to wrestle power from the NDC and expressed the hope that the women wing would apply same efforts to help break the 8 in the next election.

Mr George Sarfo, Gomoa West Constituency Chairman of NPP, reiterated calls to the women not to relax but strive hard, as help was being sought from the Regional and National hierarchy of the party to give logistical support to motivate them to recapture the lost seat in the next election.

The Chairman said the Akufo-Addo administration had kept faith with the people of Gomoa West in the areas of education, health, water, job creation and security and urged them to remain resolute to help retain the party in power.

Projects being done for Gomoa West, he indicated included potable water which would help solve the perennial water problem facing the inhabitants.

Mrs Iddi commended Area Coordinators and other executives in the constituency who contributed to the reactivation of the Women’s wing for their vision.

She said the government had assisted in the training of 40 women in various trades to help improve their lot, adding that this would raise the standard of living of women in the constituency.

Mrs  Iddi, also the Aspiring Parliamentary Candidate, said through her efforts many qualified people had been recruited into Police, Immigration, Fire, Prisons, and other security services to help reduce youth unemployment in the constituency.

She called on the members and the entire constituency executives to strongly rally behind her to get the nod as Parliamentary Candidate for the NPP to recapture the lost seat for the party.

Mr Kwame Yawson, a self-employed, has been elected to represent the Gomoa Central Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections.

Mr Yawson polled 443 of the 1,011 valid votes cast to beat his two contenders; Dr Madison Adanusa, who obtained 326 votes, and Dr. Ebenezer Duncan; 242 votes in the primary held at Gomoa Abonyin.

The election was conducted by officials of the Gomoa Central office of the Electoral Commission (EC), led by its Director, Ms Rebecca Hanson, and supervised by the constituency and regional executives, headed by Professor Richard Kofi Asiedu, the Regional Chairman of the party.

Earlier in the day, the three contestants made a declaration to accept the outcome of the elections with a pledge to support the winner to win the constituency parliamentary seat in 2024.

Prof Asiedu commended the constituency executives, delegates and all who in diverse ways contributed to a peaceful and successful election.

The victory, he said, was for the entire NDC, and all the people should put their differences aside and contribute their quota towards victory in the general election to put smiles on the faces of Ghanaians.

Mr Yawson thanked the delegates for giving him the nod to lead Gomoa Central to recapture the parliamentary seat from the New Patriotic Party and ensure more development for the area.

He appealed to the members to embrace unity and forge ahead as one family with one purpose towards victory.

NPP Presidential Primaries: ‘There will be level playing field for smooth elections’

0

The Presidential Election Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has assured the four aspirants that it will ensure a level playing field for smooth and peaceful primaries on November 4, 2023.

Mr Kwabena Abankwa Yeboah, the Vice Chairman of the Election Committee, briefing the media on Tuesday, entreated all the aspirants and their supporters to comport themselves and be decorous in their utterances, devoid of insults and unsubstantiated allegations.

A total of 203, 439 delegates would vote in 331 polling centres across the 275 constituencies nationwide.

Eligible delegates were required to go along with their party card and passport to aid verification of their identity, he said.

The Committee would grant accreditation to two polling station agents of each of the four presidential aspirants in the 275 constituencies, while regional campaign coordinators of the candidates would also receive accreditation to enable them to monitor the elections.

The presidential aspirants would also receive accreditation, Mr Yeboah said.

A portal had been opened for media houses, which want to provide coverage and would be given accreditation as well.

The four aspirants contesting the Party’s flagbearer position are: Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Dr Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, and Mr Francis Addai- Nimoh, a former MP of Mampong, Ashanti Region.

The one who obtains more than 50 per cent of the votes would be the flagbearer for the December 2024 general election.

The poll is expected to be closely and hotly contested by the front-runners.

The Electoral Commission would announce the winner by 1800 hours on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

The largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, has already elected former President John Mahama as its flagbearer for Election 2024.

NDC Parliamentary Candidate-elect pledges to recapture Gomoa Central seat

0

Mr Kwame Deen Yawson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate-elect for Gomoa Central, has reiterated calls on party faithful to unite and work harder to recapture the seat from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024.

He said, “It is only through a united front that the party will rally behind my candidature to defeat the NPP in the constituency.’’

Mr Yawson made the call when he led supporters of the party to undertake a clean-up exercise at Jabez Training Centre at Abonyi in the Gomoa Central District of the Central Region.

He said the NDC was poised to defeat the ruling party and would mobilize resources to win the seat to make the constituency a better place to live.

“The internal elections are over and all camps have been dissolved and it is important for supporters of the party to unite and fight for a common goal,” he stated.

The candidate-elect said as soon as election results were declared, he made efforts to call the defeated candidates to come together and work as a team to move the party forward to recapture the seat.

Mr Yawson appealed to the citizens of Gomoa Central not to make a mistake again but vote massively for the NDC since the ruling party had woefully disappointed them in the areas of development and road infrastructure, which had worsened the plights of the people.

He pledged that if voted as a legislator for Gomoa Central, he would lead efforts to bring infrastructural projects to the area to benefit them and children yet unborn.

Mr Yawson polled 443 votes of the 1,011 total valid votes cast to defeat two candidates, Dr Ebenezer Arthur Duncan, who obtained 242 votes and Dr Madison  Adanusa, who bagged 326 votes in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission.

Mr Yawson said that the constituency had suffered for far too long and the time had come for them to change their voting pattern this time for NDC, adding that the party would never disappoint them when voted into office in the 2024 elections.

He promised to work with stakeholders, especially the chiefs and Queen mothers, when voted as MP to help find lasting solution to the many teenage pregnancy cases, which had bedeviled girl child education in the constituency.
