Omanhene calls for effective mechanism to reduce economic hardship

0

Obrempong Yamfo Krampah XI, the Omanhene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, has reiterated calls on government to institute measures to help revert current economic hardship facing Ghanaians.

He said, there was the need for the government to cushion the economy by creating an enabling environment for businesses, to curtail the outcry among people for peace and development.

The Chief said, low-income citizens were complaining about financial difficulties, and it was the duty of the government to ensure that the problems were solved.

The Omanhene made these known when he addressed Divisional, Sub-chiefs, Queen mothers, and family heads to mark the 2023 Yam festival celebration at his palace at Ajumako in the Gomoa West District of the Central region.

Obrempong Yamfo Krampah who is also the immediate past President of Central Regional House of Chiefs, noted that there was growing disaffection among Ghanaians, and urged the government to come out with sustainable solutions to their concerns.

He said the recent demonstrations held at Jubilee House in Accra and other industrial actions by workers attested to the fact that majority of Ghanaians were facing economic hardship.

He said, as traditional leaders and custodians of the land, chiefs were not supposed to be involved in politics, and would not in anyway undermine the administration of governments, but they could speak on behalf of their people.

The Omanhene hinted that chiefs would never subscribe to coups, but cautioned the government to put in place effective mechanisms that would provide financial freedom to the populace.

He appealed to President Akufo Addo’s government to heed to the calls from chiefs, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to make changes in his ministerial and other appointees, for effective administration of the country.

On land cases, the Omanhene admonished Divisional and sub-chiefs to avoid bribery, unfair hearing and wrongful judgment of cases brought before them at various palaces, to reduce land disputes.

He also called for co-operation, mutual understanding, and a sense of ownership between them and the inhabitants to promote peace.

The Omanhene expressed grave concern about the numerous teenage pregnancy cases in towns and villages, which were retarding the progress of girl child education.

He called for the strengthening of existing traditional bye-laws, that which barred children under 18 years from staying out after 1900 hours in all communities under Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area.

Government must be steadfast in revamping the poultry sector in Ghana

0

The Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers have re-echoed the need for the government to hasten activities geared towards revitalizing the poultry sector.

The Association believes that revamping the sector by addressing issues on high cost of feed and other issues, could motivate more farmers to bounce back to poultry business.

Mr Victor Oppong Adjei, National Chairman of the Association who made call said “it is going to benefit the whole economy, not the poultry farmers alone.

This is because for almost four years now, about 85 percent of the farms have collapsed due to challenges such as the high cost of feed, and workers had to go home, which had rippling effects on families and homes” he explained.

Mr Adjei was speaking at the opening of a four-day training in Poultry Management for members of the Apex body of Women in Poultry Value Chain (WIPVaC-Apex Ghana) at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.

He said if given the needed attention, the poultry sector could create over a million jobs in the country, adding that, the venture had more economic gains and would in a way reduce rural-urban migration since poultry farms were always located in the rural areas.

He noted that although the Association had met with the government and other implementing agencies, workable solutions for production and marketing should be deepened.

Broiler production, according to him, was lucrative and explained that “but here is the case that when one produces broiler in Ghana, you find it very difficult to sell because of the imported frozen chicken that has been dumped in the country.”

Mr Adjei said per the recent projections by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), it would be encouraging for the production of broilers and called for the regulation of imported frozen chicken for local broiler production to thrive.

Mr Ricky Aboagye Poku, Head of Poultry Production Unit, MoFA, indicated that the government was not relenting in efforts to address challenges in the poultry sector.

He said the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) had specific attention to poultry, soybean, maize, and rice as key commodities.

Mr Aboagye Poku said the government intended to not only revamp the industry, but also cut down import bills, adding that, Ghana spent a lot of money importing frozen chicken into the country and that there was the need to upscale local poultry production.

He said the country could not just ban importation of frozen chicken when it was not sufficient in local supply.

Flooding exposes a new historic building in an ancient Greek city near Derna.

The devastation caused by the floods in Libya has uncovered new buildings at an ancient Greek city near Derna.

Libyan authorities who arrived to investigate the old city and recover what might be preserved were surprised to discover archaeological sites that had resurfaced after the rains had receded.

According to Dr. Ahmed Issa of Omar Al-Mukhtar University’s Department of Archeology, a national council of specialists should be created to categorise the new archaeological sites and develop a restoration plan for the region.

Anis Hamed, from the Shahat Antiquities Control Department, said that the floods caused cracks in the walls of archaeological buildings, and that they contacted local official authorities and UNESCO for help.

The city of Cyrene was founded in 631 BC by the Greeks, and it witnessed the height of its prosperity in the fourth century BC with the development of agricultural and commercial activity.

The city is distinguished by its Greek baths, the Temple of Zeus, which was founded in the fifth century BC, the Temple of Apollo, and other temples.

The floods killed thousands, uprooted residential buildings and washed away roads and bridges, especially in the city of Derna.

More than 11,000 people have been reported killed, and more than 10,000 others remain missing more than a week after the disaster, according to the Libyan Red Crescent and the United Nations.

Pope Francis: The Mediterranean must not be a “war zone”

On Wednesday, Pope Francis stated that the Mediterranean Sea must not become a “hotspot of war.”

“It is not acceptable that it becomes a mausoleum, nor should it be a source of strife,” he stated in his weekly speech to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.

“The Mediterranean is the polar opposite of civilisational clashes, bloodshed, and people trafficking. The Mediterranean serves as a conduit for contact between Africa, Asia, and Europe; between north and south, east and west, peoples and languages, ideologies and faiths.”

Western society in crisis

Francis’ address came following his visit to the French port city of Marseille last weekend for a meeting to discuss the Mediterranean, where he decried what he called a “fanaticism of indifference” towards migrants.

He said, on Wednesday, the tens of thousands of migrants crossing the sea to reach Europe must be welcomed and integrated because they can help Western societies.

“Our societies, sickened by consumerism and by empty escapism need to open themselves, their souls and spirits need to be oxygenised,” he said, adding, “Then they will be able to read the [migrant] crisis as an opportunity and deal with it positively. “

Anti-migrant sentiment in Europe

Migrant crossings in the Mediterranean have almost doubled since 2022, according to figures released in September by EU coast and border guard agency Frontex.

Between January and August 2023, the number of migrants arriving in Italy via the Mediterranean from North Africa came to almost 114,300.

The rise in crossings comes amidst an increase in anti-migrant sentiment in several European countries.

During his address on Wednesday, Pope Francis gave a short message to visiting Polish pilgrims urging them to continue to help Ukrainian refugees.

Poland will hold national elections on October 15, with political parties on the right increasingly taking anti-migrant positions and showing less support for Ukraine.

Sergio Ramos’ four children were at home when robbers ransacked the house while the ex-Real Madrid and PSG defender was playing for Sevilla in the Champions League.

Sergio Ramos’ four children were the victims of a frightening attack on their home when the defender was playing for Sevilla in the Champions League.

Ramos’ four children and two nannies were at home when intruders broke into the Spanish defender’s home on Seville’s outskirts.

The robbers trashed the residence after circumventing the security system, seizing costly watches, jewellery, designer apparel, and cash, according to Mundo Deportivo. While the break-in frightened the children and carers, no one was hurt. The Civil Guard of Spain is investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made thus yet.

The footballer was playing in Sevilla’s 1-1 draw against Lens at the time of the break-in while his wife, television reporter Pilar Rubio, was also away on business.

Ramos returned to Sevilla this summer, 18 years after leaving his boyhood club to join Real Madrid and after reportedly turning down the chance to move to Manchester United. The centre-back won four Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles in 16 years with Real before leaving to join Paris Saint-Germain, where he won back-to-back Ligue 1 crowns.

His property boasts 43 hectares and is the site of his stables as well as his prize-winning horse, Yucatan de Ramos.

Ramos’ home in Madrid was also broken into in 2012 while the player and his brother and agent were in, leading to the burglars scarpering without taking anything.

Erik ten Hag issues a warning to Alejandro Garnacho following Manchester United’s Carabao Cup victory against Crystal Palace.

Alejandro Garnacho has been admonished by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag that his prior starts this season were “not good enough.”

The 19-year-old has made six appearances so far this season, and in the 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Crystal Palace, he scored his first goal of the year. After starting the first two Premier League games of the season and then being benched, he made his third start of the campaign against the Eagles.

  • Alejandro Garnacho Man Utd 2023-24Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURETen Hag has now warned the teenager that his performances earlier this season were not up to scratch, insisting that he simply was not good enough. It comes amid an ongoing spat with Jadon Sancho; Ten Hag publicly called the England international out, and he responded by insisting he was being made a “scapegoat”.

Ten Hag said after the win over Palace: “You have seen at the start of the season we played him and then his contribution was not good enough.

“But he also had some good actions. You see always he is a threat in the game even when he is not playing that well.

“He has to learn when he does his job in defending he will always have his moment and he will always be decisive because he has great qualities.

“As well, it’s not only off the ball. But I want to see like today, he is entering the box in the right spot to finish. But I think it is quite normal for a player of his age that there is space for a lot of improvement.

“Everyone likes him, the fans like him, the team likes him, I like him but we also have to demand from him and push him because he can act on a very high level but he has to show it every day.”

Real Madrid and Saudi teams are interested in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is set to leave in January following the TikTok video issue.

0

If Victor Osimhen decides to leave Napoli in January due to issues surrounding a TikTok video, Real Madrid and Saudi Pro League teams are interested in acquiring him.

Osimhen and Napoli are presently the subject of controversy when the club posted a video on TikTok of Osimhen missing his penalty against Bologna with the caption, “Gimme penalty please.” The player’s representative threatened legal action against the club despite the fact that the club quickly erased the footage. Also, the player deleted any reference of Napoli from his Instagram account, a blatant sign that his relationship with the team has worsened.

With Osimhen now likely to depart the club in the next transfer window, the Daily Mail reports that several Saudi Pro League clubs along with Real Madrid have shown interest in signing the prolific goalscorer in January. Chelsea are also monitoring the situation but may struggle to afford the striker’s huge wages.

0

The Parliament of Ghana will from Saturday, September 30 to Friday, October 6, 2023, host the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Accra at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC).

Themed: “The Commonwealth Charter 10 years on: Values and principles for Parliaments to uphold”, the seven-day Conference would have about 686 delegates including Speakers and Presiding Officers, parliamentarians, Clerks-to-Parliaments, Parliamentary staff, and key stakeholders in the parliamentary governance sector as well as 56 national legislatures.

Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Cyril K.O. Nsiah, the Clerk to Parliament said other 111 sub-national branches (state and provincial legislatures) across the nine geographic regions of the Commonwealth would be participants of the CPC.

He said: “The adoption of the Ghana as a host country came as a result of the 64th edition held in Kampala. This 66th edition will be held under the patronage of the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who is also the President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the President of the Ghana Branch of the Association.”

Mr Nsiah said the Conference, which had the goal of fostering dialogue and cooperation among member countries to address pressing global challenges within the context of Commonwealth values would emphasise the importance of Parliamentary diplomacy in addressing the challenges and highlight the role of Parliaments in shaping policies that benefited their citizens.

He said the conference would officially be opened on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, under the patronage of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana and the Vice-Patron of the CPA as the keynote speaker.

“The opening ceremony will be followed by workshops to discuss various topics relating to security, human rights, environment, economy, gender and other cross-cutting issues.

“Host nation’s workshop will be organised by Ghana to deliberate on the topic: “Combating the threat of terrorism to Statehood: The Role of Parliament,” he said.

According to Mr Nsiah, Mr Albert Kan Dappah, the Minister for National Security was invited to lead discussions on the topic.

He, therefore, mentioned that the CPC would be held simultaneously with other conferences, meetings, and workshops, which would include the CPA General Assembly; meetings of the CPA Executive Committee; 39th CPA Small branches conference and meetings of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP).

Others would be the meeting of Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD) networks; 57th meeting of the Society of Clerks at the Table (SoCATT) and the presentation of the 2023 Commonwealth Parliamentarian of the Year awards.

Mr Nsiah said as part of efforts to promote Ghana by highlighting the natural resource endowments, history, culture, and traditions of Ghana to the international community, some tourist sites had been specified for visit by the delegates on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

He cited the Cape Coast Castle, the Kakum National Park, a cultural durbar at Manhyia Palace, the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam and boat cruise to the Dodi Island and Bisa Aberwa Museum.

The CPC is the annual Conference of the CPA.

It is the largest annual gathering of Commonwealth Parliamentarians, who come together to discuss global parliamentary and political issues.

Each year, the Conference is hosted by a different Commonwealth Parliament.

The CPA, previously known as the Empire Parliamentary Association, is an organisation which works to support good governance, democracy, and human rights. In 1989 the patron of the CPA was the Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II.

One of the oldest Commonwealth organisations, the CPA was founded in 1911 with the mission to promote the advancement of parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding of democratic governance, youth engagement in democracy, gender equality and equal representation.

At present, there are 54 Commonwealth Association countries, in which 164 CPA Branches are Parliaments and Legislatures, with a total membership of 18,000 Parliamentarians and Legislators, were established.

Never negotiate for Alan’s come back – New Edubiase NPP executive

0

The New Edubiase Constituency executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will be unnecessary for the national leadership of the party to negotiate for the return of Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen to the party.

Mr Felix Baah Nuako, the Constituency Secretary told the Ghana News Agency, that, the departure of Mr Kyerematen was a good omen for the party.

Reacting to the news of Mr Kyerematen’s resignation from the party, he said his absence would not have any negative effect on the party going to the 2024 elections.

Mr Kyerematen announced his resignation from the NPP to lead a new movement for change, ahead of the 2024 elections.

The decision had generated a lot of debate among the Ghanaian populace with divergent opinions on the possible effects of the resignation on the NPP in the 2024 elections.

Mr Nuako said Mr Kyerematen’s influence in the party had waned over the years and there was no need to beg him to return to the party.

However, some party sympathizers in the New Edubiase Constituency view the resignation of Mr Kyerematen as suicidal for the party in the 2024 elections.

According to them, “breaking the eight” without Mr Keyermaten could be a herculean task and therefore, suggested to the leadership of the party to handle the matter carefully to avoid further divisions in the party.

Others also suggested that the pairing of Mr Kyerematen and Mr Kennedy Agyepong for the new independent movement could cause a massive scare in the country’s 2024 elections.

The Electoral Commission has registered a total of 38,294 in the Volta Region in the second week of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The Commission registered 19, 461 males and 18, 833 females, with 847 applicants being challenged on grounds of ineligible.

This was made known to the Ghana News Agency by the Volta Regional Director of the Commission, Mr Eric Dzakpasu.

Mr Dzakpasu advised parents not to encourage their children below age 18 years to register as that was against the law.

He said the Commission would start replacement of voter’s card from October 3, 2023, and asked citizens who lost their cards to visit their offices from the said date for replacement of their cards.

The Director praised the political parties for their support and cooperation, which he described as smooth, and hoped such cooperation would be maintained to the end of the exercise.

He urged eligible Ghanaians to avail themselves to be registered to enable them to partake in the electoral processes of the country.
