Chad declares a state of emergency after flooding affects over a million people.

0

On Wednesday, Chad’s transitional President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno declared a state of emergency due to flooding that has affected over a million people in the central African country.

In a televised address, the leader stated that the disposition will allow authorities to better contain and manage the disaster.

Residents of N’Djamena are building dykes and using dugout canoes to escape the flooded areas, with roughly half of the city underwater.

The government announced a response plan to provide shelter, food, and sanitation, but many people, including Aziza Marie Noel, are still waiting.

“Our belongings are outside, everyone is outside, and we don’t even have a place to stay, the N’djamena resident laments.

“We have no money. Even with the food we had, everything is lost. So, it’s up to them [Editor’s note: the authorities] now to see how we are.”

Although parts of Chad are faced with heavy rainfall each year, the precipitation seen in 2022 is unprecedented, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration.

The hardest-hit provinces are mostly located in the south. 18 provinces out of the country’s 23 have been disaster-stricken.

Transitional leader Deby Itno called for technical and financial support from allies and partners.

Swollen rivers have destroyed over 470,000 hectares of crops and farming land sparking fears of food shortage.

In June Chad declared a food emergency. The United Nations estimated last year that 5.5 million Chadians or more than a third of the population needed urgent humanitarian aid.

The situation has only worsened following the war in Ukraine and the climate crisis.

Burkina Faso’s new strongman will be sworn in as transition president on Friday (Oct 21).

The constitutional council announced the resignation of Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba on Wednesday (October 19).

Captain Traoré has been the junta’s leader since September 30, when he deposed Damiba.

According to the transition charter adopted by the national forum on October 14, the 34-year-old will become Burkina Faso’s new leader.

Traoré was unanimously elected “president of the transition, head of state, and supreme chief of the national armed forces” by the 300-person transition team.

The charter stipulates that “the term of the president of the transition will end” once the leader elected after the 2024 presidential race will be sworn in. Adding that “the president of the transition is not eligible for the upcoming elections”.

Burkina has been grappling with a deadly jihadist insurgency.

People are abandoning the dollar because it is difficult to obtain in Ghana – Joe Jackosn

0

Mr. Joe Jackson, a financial analyst and Chief Operations Officer at Dalex Finance, has revealed that people are having difficulty accessing Dollars to buy in Ghana at the moment.

To that end, he claims that more people are abandoning the Dollar, forcing them to trade in Cedis.

He believes that this will help to stabilize the Cedi against the US dollar.

On Wednesday, October 19, he said on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 with Alfred Ocansey, “It is a difficult time, but I expect the rate to slow down.” The rate will slow because it is currently difficult to find dollars to buy and most of the people we have are giving up on buying Dollars and are slowing.

“I am also expecting that the government will soon announce measures that will indicate to the market that it is serious about the reducing its expenditure.

“The measures, the biggest one is going to be debt restructuring, when that happens I expect the rate of the Cedi depreciation to slow down.”

Some forex bureaus are selling the local currency between ¢12.50 and ¢12.95.

The Cedi has been reported by Bloomberg to be the world’s worst-performing currency this year as investors continued to squeeze foreign capital to the west African country before a deal with the International Monetary Fund.

But the Bank of Ghana (BoG) said the fall of the Cedi against the Dollar and also the high inflation rate (32.7%) are temporary.

Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana Elsie Addo Awadzi expressed confidence of a positive outlook for Ghana’s economy.

Speaking at the 21st Annual National RCB CEOs conference on the theme ‘Positioning Rural banking at the Centre of Financial Services delivery in Ghana – the role of stakeholders” she explained that recent global developments have heightened economic and business uncertainties for businesses and individuals. Our domestic economy is not spared from these developments.

The Bank of Ghana, she said is working closely with the Ministry of Finance and other key stakeholders to negotiate a sound economic reform programme supported by the IMF, to stabilise and transform our economy.

“We at the Bank of Ghana are confident about the outlook for our economy. The current high inflation and cedi depreciation are temporary, and we must avoid speculative behaviour that only works against attaining stability sooner,” Mrs Addo Awadzi stated.

The BoG earlier identified five key reasons for the woes of the local currency.

They were “The strength of the US dollar, Investor reaction to Credit Rating Downgrade, Non-Roll over of Maturing Bonds, The sharp rise in crude oil prices and impact on the Oil Bill, Loss of External Financing.”

The central bank went ahead to announce measures introduced to resolve the situation.

They were the “Gold Purchase Program to increase foreign exchange reserves; Special Foreign Exchange Auction for the Bulk Distribution Company’s (BDCs) to help with the importation of petroleum products; Bank of Ghana is entering into a cooperation agreement with the mining companies to provide BOG with the opportunity to buy gold as when it becomes available.

“The Bank of Ghana is supporting the banking sector with foreign currency liquidity to help meet the demand for external payments. The recently approved USD750,000,000 Afrexim loan facility by Parliament, once disbursed, will boost the foreign exchange position of the country and help restore confidence.”

The recently signed 1.13billion dollar Cocoa Syndicated loan was also a measure to shore up the Cedi, the BoG added.

I expect the Cedi’s fall to slow – Joe Jackson

Mr Joe Jackson, Chief Operations Officer at Dalex Finance, believes the Cedi’s depreciation against the US dollar will slow.

He stated that people are giving up because it is difficult to buy dollars these days.

Similarly, he expects the government to send market signals that it is cutting back on spending. He also mentioned debt restructuring as one of the measures. He predicted that if this occurs, the Cedi fall would slow.

On Wednesday, October 19, he said on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 with Alfred Ocansey, “It is a difficult time, but I expect the rate to slow down.” The rate will slow because it is currently very difficult to find dollars to buy, and most people have given up on buying dollars and are slowing. I also expect the government to announce measures soon that will demonstrate to the market that it is serious about cutting spending.

“The most significant of the measures will be debt restructuring; when that occurs, I expect the rate of Cedi depreciation to slow.”

Solutions to Ghana’s economic challenges abound, but Akufo-Addo is failing to lead – NDC’s Gabriella Tetteh

0

Gabriella Tetteh, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications team, believes that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not providing the necessary leadership in addressing economic challenges.

Unlike President Akufo-Addo, she said, former President John Draman Mahama demonstrated leadership by convening the Senchi Forum, where experts gathered around a table to discuss how to address the country’s economic challenges at the time.

She stated that the NDC has asked Mr. Akufo-Addo to do the same and collect ideas to address the challenges.

Speaking on the closure of shops by members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) on TV3’s New Days how with Roland Walker on Thursday October 20, she said “we told Akufo-Addo to call for an economic dialogue. The solution to the problems are there but we need leadership, they should organise economic forum the way we did when we were in office.”

Shops in Accra closed from Wednesday, October 19 as traders started a three-day action to register displeasure at the current economic conditions.

GUTA directed all its members to close down shops in Accra.

They are protesting the high cost of doing business in Ghana as a result of the economic meltdown.

They claim the depreciation of the domestic currency, Cedi, to the US Dollar is making it difficult for most traders to stay in business.

Not even a last-minute move by the Council of State would stop GUTA from embarking on the action.

“It is obvious that we cannot contain these challenges any longer as it is becoming increasingly challenging,” GUTA National President Dr Joseph Obeng told journalists on Tuesday, October 18 after the meeting.

“We want to send a hint to the government to recognize that there is a sense of urgency in this situation. On this note, by the power vested in me by the trading community, I declare that all shops in the Greater Accra be closed [Wednesday] till Monday.”

This follows last week’s closure of shops in the central business district of the Ashanti Region.

There, the traders were protesting the e-VAT system introduced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

It took the intervention of the Queen mother of the Ashanti Kingdom, Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom II for the tensions to ease.

ALL EYES ON: Benzema was always going to be the star attraction after claiming the first Golden Ball of his distinguished career. It looked like being a frustrating evening for the Frenchman when he saw two efforts ruled out by VAR, but he was not to be denied and got his name on the scoresheet in the 75th minute – leading to the 34-year-old breaking out a VAR-themed celebration as he ironically mimicked referees drawing out a square with their fingers.

WHAT THEY SAID: Quizzed about the chemistry between the two Brazilians after the 2-0 win, Ten Hag said: “Definitely, there is a link between them, that is clear. Casemiro is now at the side of him and we see him developing and proving why we signed him. He is growing from game to game.”

The Dutch tactician added: “You see how important a player like he is for the squad, he was magnificent and the performance shows the club’s needed someone like him. He is showing that in the last few games, what he can do for the team.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Casemiro did not make his first Premier League start until the 2-1 win over Everton on October 9. He repaid the coach’s trust with an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo and has since retained his place in Ten Hag’s lineup, helping United stay in the mix for a top-four berth.
