CKT-UTAS gets accreditation for BSc midwifery programme

Navrongo (U/E), Feb. 11, GNA – The Clement Kubindiwo Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo, Upper East Region, has received professional accreditation to run a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme in midwifery.

Professor Albert Luguterah, the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university, disclosed this at the fifth matriculation ceremony for freshmen and women for the 2024/2025 academic year.

“I am happy to say that this year, we have also received professional accreditation to run BSc Midwifery programme, which we will be admitting students into, very soon,” the VC said.

He added that in the 2023/2024 academic year, the university received accreditation to run BSc General Nursing, Pediatrics Nursing, and Medical Laboratory Science programmes for which students, who were enrolled, joined in this year’s matriculation.

Guided by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the VC said the university ensured all its programmes were accredited and indicated that programmes due for reaccreditation were undergoing the necessary processes.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to follow due process, saying “We reaffirm our commitment to following accreditation processes before advertising any programmes.”

Touching on the 2024/2025 admission process, Professor Luguterah said the university received a total of 2,758 applications for both postgraduate and undergraduate programmes for the academic year.

He stated that 1,891 candidates out of the number were admitted, and while 1,389 candidates accepted the offers, 1,081 out of the number were undergraduate and 308 postgraduate students duly registered for their respective programmes.

The VC told the students that the mandate of CKT-UTAS was to provide higher education, undertake research, and disseminate knowledge related to development through the integration of Technology and Applied Sciences.

“Guided by this mandate, our vision is to transform this university into a world-class institution where excellence and good work ethics are paramount.

“We assure you of a holistic education where student interest is prioritized, critical thinking and innovation are our hallmarks, and you are equipped to make a positive impact in society after your studies,” he said.

He reminded the fresh students that their primary aim in the university was academic pursuit, and added that “Challenges will arise, and I urge you to seek advice and solutions from appropriate authorities to navigate them, be resilient and perseverant until you achieve your academic goal.”

Professor Luguterah said the university was a secular community, which management valued students’ social life on campus, and admonished them to engage in authorized student clubs, associations, and extracurricular activities, including religious organizations which contribute positively to their holistic training.

“Familiarize yourself with the university’s rules and regulations to avoid any breaches. The student support system here is vibrant. Contact the Office of Dean of Student Affairs for social issues and your departments for academic clarifications,” he told the students.

Suame magazine needs permanent fire station – Artisans

Artisans and spare parts dealers at the Suame Industrial Area (Magazine), have called for a permanent fire station to ensure prompt response to fire outbreaks and other emergency situations. 
They have also called for CCTV cameras and fire detectors to monitor, detect, and prevent fire hazards at the largest auto industrial zone in the country. 


Mr Lukeman Mohammed Nuhu Appiadu, Ashanti Regional Chair of the Ghana National Association of Garages (GNAG), made the appeal during a visit by Members of Parliament (MPs) in Kumasi to victims of the recent fire disaster at the Suame magazine. 


The MPs were Mr Francis Asenso Boakye, MP for Bantama, Mr Ekow Vincent Assafuah, Old Tafo, Mr Michael Aidoo, Oforikrom, Mr John Darko, Suame and Nana Agyei Baffour, Manhyia South. 
The visit was for them to console the victims and discuss ways of assistance and other measures to prevent fire disasters in the enclave. 


Mr Appiadu pointed out that, the Suame industrial area needed improved road network to ease movement and emergency response, modern health facilities, and access to stable electricity supply. 
There is also the need for capacity building and technology transfer programmes to help artisans repair modern vehicles and improve their efficiency as well as sustainable financial support for the affected artisans. 


Mr Appiadu appealed to the MPs not to let their visit be a one-day show of concern but rather, be the beginning of real change for the artisans in the Suame enclave. 
“Our members have lost their livelihoods overnight. 


We need urgent interventions, including fire safety education, financial assistance, and better infrastructure to prevent such incidents in the future,” he stressed. 


Mr Asenso Boakye, who spoke on behalf of the MPs, said the visit was to show solidarity and concern for the affected artisans and traders who lost their items during the fire disaster. 
He said the MPs were working together towards immediate interventions and long-term preventive measures in the industrial area. 


“The fire has caused extensive losses, affecting livelihoods and businesses. 
We are here not only to commiserate but to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent such disasters in the future,” he stated. 


Mr Asenso Boakye mentioned congestion, use of inflammable materials in the various workshops, faulty and illegal electrical wiring and connections and others, as some causes of the fire disaster. 


He stressed the need for urgent fire safety interventions such as regular fire safety education and training for artisans and traders, improved urban planning and workshop reorganization in the area, strict enforcement of electrical and fire safety regulations as well as the provision of a well-equipped fire station within the Suame industrial enclave. 


He assured the victims of their commitment to engage government agencies, the local authorities, and other key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy to protect Suame Magazine from future fire disasters. 

NDC Regional Chair elected to represent Ahafo Region on Council of State

Mr Yaw Okyere, the Ahafo Regional Chair of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was on Tuesday elected as the Member of the Council of State for the Region. 


In an election organised and supervised by the Electoral Commission at Goaso, the regional capital, Mr Okyere secured six votes to beat his keen contender Mr Abraam Agyemang who had four votes out of the 12 votes cast. 
In all eight people contested the elections, held at the Goaso Pastoral Center, and recorded two rejected ballots. 


Prior to the elections, Mr Okyere called the delegates to vote for him to enable him to represent and front the development of the region. 
Other contestants included Bukari Zakari Anaba, Kwabea Appeagyei, Sir Shai Agyemang, Brobbey Nkrumah, Yvonne Opoku Kwarteng, Barima Twireko. 

Chairman of Legon Cities, Richard Atikpo elected Oti Region’s representative for Council of State

Mr Richard Kings Atikpo, a renowned football administrator, secured an impressive 16 out of 18 votes, solidifying his position as the Oti Regional representative for the Council of State. 


Mr Atikpo’s triumph is notable, considering he faced stiff competition from experienced politicians, including former Deputy Regional Minister of Oti, Mr. Maxwell Qouphy Blagodzi.  
Other contenders included Mr. Mohammed Haris, Mr. Joseph Quarshie Akpabi, Mr. Nicholas Kwame Fato, Mr. Calvin Yaw Klabi, and Nana Kofi Ollator. 
As the Council of State representative, Mr Atikpo would play a crucial advisory role to the President, as stipulated in articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution.  


His vision for the region, as outlined in his manifesto, focused on key areas such as Politics, Education, Agriculture, Sports Infrastructure and Social Interventions. 


Atikpo’s plans include pushing for the establishment of a university in the region, promoting commercial fish farming, and developing sports infrastructure. 


He also aims to provide scholarships, support young entrepreneurs, and improve infrastructure development in the region. 


With his extensive experience in business and football administration, Mr Atikpo is well positioned to drive development and growth in the Oti Region.  
His election as Council of State representative is a significant milestone, and his vision for the region’s future is undoubtedly ambitious. 

Western North Regional minister takes office, calls for collaboration

Mr Wilberforce Petty Brentum, the Western North Regional minister, has assumed office with a call on stakeholders, including Traditional authorities, Regional Co-ordinating staff and the general public for comprehensive collaboration to ensure accelerated development in the Region. 
 
Mr Brentum lauded the assurance from the acting coordinating director to support him in his duties and asked staff of the Council to be professional in the discharge of their duties so as to implement the President’s agenda for the region. 
 
“I am happy for the reception and the assurance that the coordinating director has given to help me achieve my vision for the region”. 
  
The regional minister who said this in his maiden address to staff and management of the Western North Regional Co-ordinating Council cautioned against sabotaging government business. 
 
Mr Brentum promised to form a team to tour the region to profile all mining activities in the region in order to roll out pragmatic steps to fight illegal mining and logging in the region. 
 
He promised to work closely with the appropriate state institutions to identify challenges and how best to control and manage them. 
 
 Mr Bentum, however, expressed worry about the decline in cocoa production in the area and gave the assurance that the necessary measures would be put in place to curb the situation. 
 
He advised cocoa farmers to venture into other businesses to supplement their income since cocoa farming was dwindling. 
 
 The regional minister commended chiefs in the region for their support during his vetting and appealed to them to continue to support him to bring the needed development to the region. 
 
He was accompanied to his office by the regional executives of the NDC led by Mr Michael Aidoo, Regional chairman, some constituency executives and other party faithful.

Nine Ebola cases have been confirmed in Uganda.

According to Uganda’s health ministry, the number of confirmed Ebola cases has increased from three to nine.

Late last month, the East African country announced the outbreak of this serious and frequently fatal viral virus.

There is currently no licensed vaccination for the Sudan strain of the virus, which is responsible for the current outbreak.

According to a statement from the health ministry on Monday, one of the nine confirmed cases has resulted in death, while seven patients are receiving treatment in a hospital in Kampala, and one is hospitalized in Mbale, close to the Kenyan border.

All eight patients are reported to be in stable condition, and 265 individuals who had contact with the confirmed cases are under quarantine.

This month, the World Health Organization announced that Uganda has initiated a trial vaccination program targeting the Sudan strain of Ebola.

Currently, available vaccines are designed for the Zaire strain, which has caused recent outbreaks in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ghana Gas CEO hailed by Nzema Youth

Takoradi, Feb. 11, GNA – Some youth in the Nzema land have hailed the appointment of Mr Robert Kofi Lartey as the new Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas Company. 

“We are confident that his appointment would have a positive impact on the Company, stakeholders, and the Nzema Community as a whole.” 

Mr. Kwasi Adjobiah, Chair of the Alliance for Nzema Development together with Mr. John Ette Amgboh the Organizer and Francis Allu Kabenla, Secretary to the Alliance said in a statement copied the Ghana News Agency.  

The statement said Mr. Lartey would be instrumental in driving Ghana Gas’s growth, expanding its operations, and fostering a culture of excellence. 

The statement lauded the President’s decision to appoint Mr. Lartey saying,” is a testament to his exceptional leadership skills, vision, and expertise”. 

“With over 13 years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry, Mr. Lartey possesses the ideal blend of strategic thinking, technical expertise, and passion for innovation to improve upon the sector”. 

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Robert Kofi Lartey to his new role as the CEO of Ghana Gas Company. We look forward to working with Mr. Lartey and supporting his vision for Ghana Gas and Nzemaland,” the statement said.  

The UN demands that former Niger leader Mohamed Bazoum be released immediately.

On Monday, February 10, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention demanded that Mohamed Bazoum and his wife, Hadiza, be released immediately.

In July of 2023, Bazoum was deposed in a coup. He and his spouse have been isolated from the outer world ever since.

They have been held in a wing of the presidential mansion in Niamey for the past year and a half. He can only be visited by his physician.

The UN Working Group considers their detention “arbitrary” and a violation of international law. It calls for their “immediate release” and the right to seek compensation.

The UN experts’ statement is not new. UN Secretary-General António Guterres had previously demanded Bazoum’s release. He even called for his “reinstatement as head of state” after his “arbitrary detention” on July 26, 2023.

Bazoum’s lawyers quickly reacted in a statement stressing that their client and his wife have been “completely cut off from the outside world” since October 2023. They have had no contact with family, friends, or legal counsel. “Only a doctor is allowed to visit them to bring food and medicine,” they said.

Niger’s military regime rejected the UN experts’ claims. It accused Bazoum of communicating by phone with “other forces hostile to Niger to orchestrate an attack.” Authorities equate this to “plots and attacks against state security” and “collusion with foreign powers.”

In June, Niger revoked Bazoum’s presidential immunity. This opened the way for a trial, but no date has been set. “Today, we have no doubt: President Bazoum is a hostage of a junta using him as a human shield,” said his lawyer, Moussa Coulibaly.

The trial of 84 Congolese soldiers charged with rape, murder, and other offenses has begun.

Monday marked the start of the trial for 84 Congolese troops who are charged with rape, murder, and other offenses against civilians in the war-torn east of the country.

The soldiers are suspected of raping multiple women and killing at least 12 people over the weekend by breaking into civilian homes in a number of villages in the Kabare and Kalehe areas in the eastern province of South Kivu.

A military court in Bukavu, the South Kivu provincial capital, heard the accused troops’ case on Monday.

The civil party requested the death penalty for all of the accused.

Congo lifted a more than 20-year moratorium on the death penalty in March, a decision criticized by rights activists.

The last execution took place in 2003.

Zawadi Chapo Ombeni, a resident of Kavumu, said he was beaten and robbed by soldiers as he was preparing to flee the village from the rebels’ advances.

The trial comes as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have been making significant gains in South Kivu in recent weeks after having captured the key city of Goma in the neighboring North Kivu province.

Some 3,000 people have been killed and nearly as many injured since late January.
