Residents of Abura Tsetsekasum appeal for social amenities

Residents of Abura Tsetsekasum in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region have appealed to the District Assembly, Member of Parliament and the government to provide them with some amenities to help improve their living conditions. 

According to the farming community with a population  

 of about 500 residents, they lacked potable drinking water, health facility, toilet facilities and good road network, which was seriously making life unbearable in the town and its adjoining communities. 

 Obaapayin Efua Nuamah, a kingmaker of the town, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, pointed out that educating their children had become a challenge   

According to her, the community through self-help constructed a three-unit classroom block which had recently had its roof ripped off in a heavy rainstorm. 

This, she said, had compelled the school’s authority to merge classes of the affected school children, describing it as “worrisome” and called for immediate redress. 

Again, she said some teachers posted to the community had abandoned their post due to conditions in the town. 

Obaapayin Nuamah said that the only source of potable drinking water, was a borehole which when faulty, compelled residents to rely on the Kakum River for their domestic chores, posing health challenges for them. 

She complained about an abandoned bridge on the Kakum River, started in the year 2017 and appealed to the contractor to complete the project for them. 

On health, she noted that the absence of a health facility was so bad that pregnant women and the sick had to travel on motorbikes to nearby communities to access health care. 

The road network, she noted, was also nothing to write home about and appealed to the government to fix the road to ensure free movement of goods and services. 

Residents were in jubilant mood over the announcement of the enstoolment of an Odikro for the community, saying his presence would help enhance development. 

ICAG urges accountants to embrace continuous professional training

Accountants have been urged to upgrade their professional skills to stay abreast with new development trends in their profession. 

Mr Kwasi Agyemang, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), noted that there were now new standards (International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and IFRS S2), which professionals must equip themselves with the requisite knowledge to be able to understand the contents of these standards, and also be useful in its application. 

Mr Agyemang said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the closing ceremony for the ICAG Professional Diploma Programme, a 5 weekend course that provided expanded continuous professional development to participants. 

It covers courses including, Advance Business Analytics; Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG); Information Technology (IT) Audit; IFRS, and IPSAS, which aimed at deepening the knowledge and competencies of members in specialized areas. 

Mr Agyemang told GNA that among the objectives of the Institute was to regulate the accountancy profession and as well promote the study of accountancy. 

He said ICAG developed programmes for its members as part of requirements to maintain its membership of the International Federation of Accountants; adding that “our members, every year must meet some 35 credit hours to maintain their membership. 

The CEO said participants of the Professional Diploma Programme had the opportunity to select courses in their respective areas and these were all geared towards enhancing their performance at their work places. 

Mr Wilfred Neneh Addico, a participant of the training programme and Partner at Makers and Partners (MAP), an accountancy firm, also told GNA that MAP was building capacity to be able to provide ESG services. 

He said that the acquired skills marked the beginning of MAP on its journey to become consultants in the ESG space, and MAP was committed to help individuals, organizations and communities to be able put together an ESG strategy. 

“ESG is basically ensuring that organizations and communities carry out their operations, being mindful of the negative impact of their activity on the environment.” 

Mr Addico said understanding the impact of their activities would enable them streamline their operations so their impact on the environment would not be severe. 

Rehabilitation of Damongo town roads commences

Mr Saeed Muhazu Jibril, Municipal Chief Executive for Damongo, has cut the sod for work to commence a five-kilometre road in Damongo town to improve access.

The project, which is part of the government’s “Year of Roads” agenda, is expected to be completed within 24 months at the cost of more than 24.4 million cedis.

It is being constructed by M/S Naschon Company Limited.

The construction includes 3.5 kilometres by-pass and 1.5 kilometres for others.

Mr Jibril, who is also Minister-designate for the Savannah Region, said the project marked the beginning of similar projects yet to be undertaken.

He said it was part of the government’s agenda to ensure that more roads were constructed across the country this year.

Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo and Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, who was also at the sod-cutting ceremony, gave assurance of his support and collaboration to ensure the project was completed on schedule.

Bliss GVS Pharma donates antimalarial drugs to Tamale West Hospital

The Tamale West Hospital has taken delivery of quantities of antimalarial drugs to boost health care delivery for patients at the facility.

The drugs, estimated at GHc182,000.00, included Lonart, P-Alaxin, and GSUNATE amongst others.

Bliss GVS Pharma, a drugs’ manufacturer, donated the drugs to the Tamale West Hospital.

Mr Ibrahim Mumuni Seidu, Medical Representative of Bliss GVS Pharma, who handed over the drugs to the authorities of the Tamale West Hospital in Tamale, said the gesture was to commemorate this year’s World Malaria Day as well as help in the fight against the disease in the country.

Mr Seidu said, “Bliss GVS Pharma is committed to improving the quality of lives of the people in the places where we serve and do business. We annually do this donation during the World Malaria Day to hospitals around the country.”

He added that “This is an effort from Bliss GVS Pharma to try to eradicate malaria from Ghana and the world at large because we understand the impact malaria has on people’s lives. This donation will provide much needed treatment to people who visit this facility and other places.”

Dr Billah Bagamsah, Head of Pharmacy,  Tamale Central Hospital, who received the drugs, expressed gratitude to the company for the gesture, saying the drugs had come at the right time to ensure quality health care delivery to the people.

He said, “Malaria is among the top three mortalities in the hospital. So, this donation will really go a long way to curb or to reduce the incidence of malaria in the hospital.”

He added that “Pregnant women and children under five years are the most vulnerable groups. So, we’ll be targeting them. If you check our OPD attendance, currently, as the rain has started, the OPD attendance for malaria is increasing and with these products, it will help the hospital treat this illness.”

More than 3 million people in the country live with mental health conditions-Coalition

Studies have confirmed more than three million people nationwide living with various mental health conditions, the Coalition of NGOs in Health has said.

The coalition said the rising cases of mental health were worrying and alarming, and therefore called on all stakeholders to pool ideas and resources together and help bring the situation under control.

Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the Chairman of the Bono Regional chapter of the Coalition who made the call urged the government to prioritise mental health, identify and tackle the immediate and remote causes contributing to the surge in mental health conditions.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Ahenu said most of the mental health conditions could be partly attributed to emotional problems emanating from marriages, broken homes, extreme poverty, and sexual exploitation and abuse.

He was speaking to the GNA after the coalition held its first quarter meeting for the year and to discuss pertinent issues in the health sector in the region, saying “inwardly many people are going through emotional trauma.”

Mr Ahenu said proactive measures ought to be put in place to arrest the rise in substance abuse among the youth, saying, if nothing was done, many of the youth would become lunatics.

He also expressed worry about the soaring cases of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and attendant deaths at major health facilities, saying studies showed NCDs contributed about 43 percent of deaths nationwide.

Mr Ahenu said cases of diabetes and hypertension were high due to poor eating habits, lack of regular exercises and unhealthy lifestyles of many Ghanaians and encouraged everybody to do regular medical checkups to know their health condition.

He said the coalition planned to undertake health outreach exercises to intensify public awareness creation on substance abuse, alcoholism, and called for support from the Ghana Health Service and civil society organisations to achieve useful outcomes.

Mr Ahenu said maternal and child mortality remained another daunting challenge in the country that required urgent attention to help the nation to the goal three of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The global goal three enjoins nations around the globe to put in place measures for enhanced good health and wellbeing for all by 2030.

Mr Ahenu therefore, advised pregnant women to attend regular antenatal and post-natal clinics and endeavour to give birth at health facilities.

He said the coalition in the region had set up projects and funding raising committees to mobilize funds for its activities in the health sectors and called for support from corporate bodies, religious organisations and wealthy individuals.

Professor Fred McBagonluri, the President of the Academic City University College, has called on stakeholders to harness the power of data science and analytics to unlock new frontiers of innovation and drive sustainable growth.

He said, “as we stand on the threshold of a new era of possibilities, let us embrace the opportunities that lie ahead with optimism and determination.”

Prof McBagonluri was speaking at the launch of a Graduate Programme in Data Science and Analytics by the Academic City University College in Accra.

The two-year MSC Programme is set to train students to apply data science techniques for problem-solving and decision-making in real-world scenarios.

The programme would also build the students’ expertise in analytic tools, independent problem-solving, and cross-industry applications.

He said the launch of the Programme signified the University’s commitment to embracing the future with open arms and it was a testament of their belief in the power of data to drive meaningful change and create lasting impact.

“With this endeavour, we aim to not only stay ahead of the curve but to redefine the very landscape of our industry,” he added.

The President said as they embarked on this journey, “we must remain vigilant in upholding the highest standards of ethics and integrity and we must ensure that the data we analyze is used responsibly and ethically, respecting the privacy and rights of individual s at all times.”

Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy as they look to remedy a cursed position for them this season.

While certain players’ roles in Arsenal‘s first-team are not up for debate – including winger Bukayo Saka, attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard, and defender William Saliba among others – the left-back spot is certainly up for grabs.

In that part of the pitch, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has oscillated between Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Takehiro Tomiyasu this term, while £38.5m summer signing Jurrien Timber is still recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered on the opening day of the season.

It remains to be seen if the former Ajax star will play again for the north London outfit this season, with Kiwior currently first in the pecking order at left-back.

However, in recent weeks, where Arsenal’s title challenge received a blow with a 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa and they were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, questions have been raised about the squad’s strength in depth and if they are running out of steam.

Arsenal step up interest in Real Madrid star

Amidst their left-back troubles, the Gunners have been linked with a move for Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy, along with Manchester United, Liverpool, and Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old’s contract at Santiago Bernabeu expires in just over a year’s time and with his deal ticking down, French publication L’Equipe state Arteta’s side have been in touch with the former Lyon player’s agents over a transfer.

The France international, who has started 28 of his 32 appearances for Los Blancos this season, joined the Spanish giants for £43.2m in the summer of 2019 and it is understood Carlo Ancelotti’s men would want to recoup as much as that fee as possible – despite the fact he turns 29 in June and will enter the last year of his contract in a couple of months.

If Arsenal were to sign the Frenchman, they would be recruiting a player who is something of an all-rounder. He has pace, thrives getting forward, but also does not neglect his defensive duties.

‘Best in the world’

Moreover, L’Equipe state Madrid are in talks with Mendy over a new deal and Ancelotti himself is a huge admirer of the ex-Le Havre man.

Last week, the Italian said: “Let me repeat, Ferland Mendy is the best in the world in his position. It’s not easy to get past him. He’s under contract and he’s a key player for us. He does not care about being in the media, he cares about the team.”

MAN UTD WANT SERIE A STAR

Man Utd have drawn up an offer as they look to bolster their defence with the signing of Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni this summer, according to reports.

Man Utd have raided Inter before, having spent £47million to make Andre Onana their new goalkeeper last summer. Onana has had an interesting season to say the least, making some terrible errors earlier in the campaign before improving his performances lately.

Onana’s early struggles do not seem to have put Man Utd off signing an Inter player again, as reports in Italy state that they are hot on Bastoni’s trail.

The left-footed centre-back is enjoying a brilliant season, having made 33 appearances in all competitions and played a crucial role in Inter putting themselves on the verge of Serie A glory.

As per WhoScored, he has been Inter’s best defender this term, picking up an average rating of 7.17. And reports have affectionately labelled him ‘the best defender in Serie A’ this season, which explains why Man United are pursuing him.

Man Utd part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is known to be on the hunt for a new left-sided centre-half, with Lisandro Martinez being kept out of action by several injuries this season.

Ratcliffe likes Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, though sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk that the move is under threat due to Everton demanding upwards of £70m.

As Bastoni has been in exceptional form recently, it will require a ‘super offer’ for Man Utd to prise him away from the Italian giants.

Ratcliffe eyes Bastoni as Branthwaite alternative

But that is exactly what Ratcliffe and Man Utd are planning to do, as the Italy international will still be cheaper to sign than Branthwaite. Inter have set their stall out at €60m (£52m), a fee Man Utd can definitely match.

Bastoni could form part of a new-look backline at Old Trafford next season, with Man Utd also hoping to land a new right-sided centre-back to replace Raphael Varane. Man Utd are eager to snare Gleison Bremer from Juventus, while Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo is another possible target.

In terms of Man Utd’s Bastoni interest, the £52m swoop could end up being an absolute steal. As Bastoni is 25, he still has his peak years ahead of him, and he has the potential to become a dominant force at Champions League level in the future.
