Man United play tough! Despite transfer interest from Arsenal, Lionesses star Mary Earps has been promised she won’t be traded.

0

Manchester United has assured Lionesses custodian Mary Earps that they would not sell her during the current Women’s Super League transfer window.

The custodian has been linked with a transfer away from the Red Devils ever since she returned from the Women’s World Cup, with Arsenal reportedly interested in signing the player. The club’s personnel reportedly met with Earps over the weekend to explain their position, which is that they would not sell the player, especially to a rival team.

Despite seeing a £100,000 ($124,650) offer for the player turned down by United, Arsenal are reportedly determined to sign The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award winner. United, on the other hand, are trying to convince the player to extend her contract that expires next summer.

The current favourite to succeed Hansi Flick as the new manager of Germany is Julian Nagelsmann.

According to the BILD, Nagelsmann, who parted company with Bayern Munich in March of this year, is presently the front-runner to lead Germany. The German FA fired former coach Hansi Flick on Sunday after Germany suffered a humiliating loss to Japan in a friendly match.

While Nagelsmann is currently out of work, he is still contracted with Bayern Munich as his deal expires in 2026. If DFB wants to hire the German coach, Bayern are likely to demand compensation in the region of €10-15 million.

NPP claims that the NDC is attempting to obstruct the voter registration process.

0

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to Salam Mustapha, the New Patriotic Party’s national youth organiser, is preparing to sabotage the impending restricted voter registration drive.

Mustapha urged the Ghana Police Service to watch out for similar efforts and deal with the perpetrators appropriately during a live conversation on his social media sites.

“The NDC wants to discredit the Electoral Commission, therefore they plan to act badly when the process gets underway. To target district officials and other locations where the registration would be taking place, they are enlisting thugs, robbers, and criminals from all around the nation.

“I want to urge the Ghana Police Service to be on the lookout for such clandestine and dastardly behaviour from the NDC and it should not be tolerated. We cannot allow dangerous people to destroy our democracy,” Mustapha said.

Mustapha also urged Ghanaians to retain the NPP in power to ensure continuity in the development, especially towards the party’s job creation agenda. He insisted that the NPP remains the best choice for the country.

“In terms of job creation, the NPP has created more jobs than any other government we have seen. The NDC in 2020 came with a manifesto that the aim was to create one million jobs in four years.

“In essence, they are going to create 250,000 every year. That is a very lazy approach and a drop in the ocean. The NPP has so far created far in excess of two million jobs and these figures are verifiable,” Mustapha said.

The limited voter registration exercise is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 12. It is being conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) to update the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Customers of Menzgold petition Akufo-Addo for financial assistance

Mr  Divine Richard Bosson, Municipal Chief Executive of Ho, says the Assembly would pursue measures to regulate the activities of foreign traders in the Volta Regional capital.

Foreigners, including from Mali, Nigeria, and Niger, and whose numbers are on the increase as inland borders continue to hinder passage to Accra, have found the Ho Municipality a haven, and are striving to establish economic ventures.

The entire street of the Ho Central Market has been taken over by mostly Nigerians dealing in mobile phones, while their counterparts from Mali and Niger had become free itinerant roamers of the Municipality hawking shoes and bags, in what some indigenes fear is a looming security threat.

Indians and Lebanese are also becoming visible in the Municipality of late, credit-selling home appliances and other products to salary workers – an act that sidesteps international laws of commerce.

The MCE, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the car park of the Central market had been taken over by the immigrant traders, while locals lacked space for their produce.

He revealed that local traders had threatened arms against the situation, and that a chapter of the Ghana Union of Traders Associations had been swiftly constituted in an attempt to protect Ghanaian businesses.

Mr. Bosson said Executives had been engaging the Assembly, and that an operation was being planned to “clear the car park,” and had alternative arrangements to move such trades to the new market buildings.

“Their presence is affecting local trade, and there are security concerns too, so the local GUTA executives are calling on me daily to do something,” he stated.

The MCE went on to note the issue of space at the market, where traders were fast developing lockable container stores under open sheds.

He said such structures were unauthorised and obstruct pathways in the busy market, raising the risks of fire, and hindering emergency access.

The MCE said the Assembly would remove such containers to make the open sheds available for the intended use by local food sellers and producers.

Moroccan rescuers use their bare hands to dig for survivors.

Rescue workers are scrambling to locate survivors in isolated mountain towns south of Marrakech following Friday night’s catastrophic earthquake.

Since the authorities struggle to transport equipment up debris-strewn roads and some settlements are in ruins, they have been using their bare hands.

More than 2,100 deaths have been reported officially, but there have been repeated warnings that this number is likely to rise as the scope of the destruction becomes more apparent.

Now that emergency personnel from outside of Morocco have joined the rescue operation, there will be less time to discover survivors.

Rabat has accepted aid offers from Spain, the UK, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. France, the US and some other countries say they are also ready to help.

Spain has sent 86 specialist rescuers in two teams, with four sniffer dogs each.

The UK government is sending 60 rescuers with four dogs, on two military transport planes, along with a small medical team. The British kit includes seismic listening devices and concrete cutting and breaking tools for reaching people trapped in rubble.

Several planes have also taken off from Qatar carrying rescue teams and emergency aid.

The Moroccan authorities say they are carefully assessing aid offers because “a lack of co-ordination could be counterproductive”.

In Marrakech, hospital worker Manel has told the BBC said she has lost 10 relatives in the quake, in villages outside the city where access is difficult.

“We cannot do anything from now because we wanted to go and help but we cannot go because the road is closed.

“They should open the roads… so we can go.

“For now, we don’t have any other information because the internet and everything isn’t working there.”

“The situation is very hard but we are trying to find any solution, anything, that we can be doing as Moroccans to help our brothers and other people who are injured or dead or the families of the dead people in that earthquake.”

Akufo-Addo criticises Mahama over claims that NPP judges are being packed into the judiciary.

0

Former President John Mahama has come under heavy fire from President Akufo-Addo for his recent comments in which he claimed that the judiciary was stacked with justices who supported the incumbent NPP party.

President Akufo-Addo spoke at the Ghana Bar Conference at the University of Cape Coast and voiced his serious worry over Mr. Mahama’s remarks, calling them “extremely harmful” for the development of the nation.

He highlighted that someone of Mr. Mahama’s position should not make such utterances.

The President further emphasised that this is one of the most serious assaults on the judiciary’s independence in Ghana’s history and poses a serious threat to it.

President Akufo-Addo urged the public to hold Mr. Mahama accountable for his “reckless” comments that aim to undermine the Judiciary. He emphasized the importance of respecting the integrity and impartiality of the judicial system, which plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law in the country.

“I have gone into this matter in detail because of a new issue which has been introduced into our public discourse by no less a public figure than the fourth president of the fourth republic perennial NDC Presidential Candidate John Mahama who has told the world that I have packed the courts with so-called NPP judges and that one of the key purposes a putative NDC victory in 2024 will be to enable him to balance the courts with so-called NDC judges.”

“Not only are these concepts new in our public discourse but they are also extremely dangerous and represent the brazen attack on the independence of the judiciary by allegedly responsible politicians,” he said.

NPP Flagbearer race: I’m politically experienced than my contenders – Dr Bawumia

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says his background places him above the other contenders for the flagbearership race of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on November 4.

He said he had defended the party at crucial times and remains the most feared candidate and becoming a nightmare for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and their Flagbearer.

Dr Bawumia said this when he was addressing over 648 delegates from Krachi East constituency at Dambai on his third day of campaign in the Oti Region.

He said his track record as running mate for the party four consecutive times, Vice President for two terms and his experience in the economic management performance of the country put him ahead in the flagbearership contest.

Dr Bawumia recounted a number of social interventions, including broadening tax revenue.

Dr Bawumia noted that a number of digital initiatives were undertaken which include designating the Ghana Card number as tax identification numbers, provision of digital address system, financial inclusion, and formalization of the processes of filing taxes.

Mobile money interoperability, he said, allowed the transfer of money from a customer of one telco to a customer of a different telco and also make payments from mobile money account into any bank account and clients could receive payments from any bank account into your mobile money account.

Dr Bawumia said on the issue of lack of unique identification of citizens,  the biometric national ID cards by the government was addressing major issues.

He described Ghana’s property address system as unique because Ghana is the first country in Africa to implement a digital system in combination with house numbers and street names.

He said it is a superior address system and leapfrogs the addressing system that have been implemented and in use in many advanced countries.

Dr Bawumia urged the delegates of the party to give him the nod to lead the party to a third successive victory in the 2024 general election.

Greater Jubilee Plan implementation: Tullow commends gov’t for support

0

Tullow PLC has commended the Government for the outstanding leadership demonstrated, which has facilitated the  pouring of its first oil from the Jubilee South East Area of the Greater Jubilee Field.

Mr Phuthuma Nhleko, the Board Chairman of Tullow PLC, said the Ministry of Energy offered the needed technical scrutiny, support and approval that paved the way  for the implementation of the Greater Jubilee Plan of Development (PoD).

Mr Nhleko said this when he addressed Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector stakeholders at a commemorative lunch at the weekend in Takoradi.

The event was to celebrate  the first oil from the area,  expected to produce an additional 30,000 bopd, bringing production in the Greater Jubilee Field to over 100,000 barrels of oil per day.

Production, according to Tullow, began on 13th July, 2023.

“I want to commend the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for his excellent role; approving the Greater Jubilee Plan of Development,” Mr Nhleko said.

He gave the assurance  that   Tullow remained committed, together  with by its partners,  to optimal production  in the spirit of sound investor relations with the Government.

Dr Prempeh, on his part, said the sustained discussions, which started in 2017, between the Energy Ministry, Ghana National Petroleum Commission and the Jubilee partners, eventually led to the approval of the Greater Jubilee Full Field Development Plan.

“One thing was certain in all the engagements back then: that the Jubilee field was going to be an investment that would lead to increased production in a mature field and pave the way for immense value and benefits for the country,” he said.

The Minister said 90 per cent of the human resource working on the Jubilee South East project were Ghanaians and assured of  the continuous provision of direction to improve lives and the economy.

“Our role as a Ministry is to work with the regulators and other stakeholders from the Government side, to formulate policies and strategies that will give the key sector players confidence and optimism to continue harnessing resources and investment to transform the industry”.

The Jubilee South East project was a stepping stone to other successes the  country could chalk, he said.

The government was committed to supporting the negotiation of the gas sales agreement to give a further boost to the oil and gas sector, especially the aspect of tapping into domestic natural gas to power electricity.

The commemorative lunch was preceded by a visit to FPSO Kwame Nkrumah, offshore, by President  Nana  Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,  the Energy Minister, senior officials of the Jubilee partners and other government officials who received full briefing on the project.

GRA Customs Division investigates two shipping lines, agents for falsified trade documents

0

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority is investigating two shipping companies and agents who connived to falsify information on trade documents to pay lesser duties and taxes to the government.

The process involves the misdescription of the goods to obtain priority clearance and avoid the payment of the full taxes due to the state.

Alhaji Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah, the Commissioner of the Customs Division, who disclosed this in an interview, said the Division, acting on intelligence on the two companies and importers, discovered that they had dotted their bills of lading in clearing goods from the Tema Port.

He said the goods were targeted and intercepted for physical examination and the results indicated that

the descriptions of goods on the Bill of Entry (BOE) were different from the physical goods found in the container.

“The actual description of the consignments were footwear, bags, belts, underwear, galvanized pipes, etc. as against the entered description of Knapsack Sprayer,” he said.

Alhaji Iddisah said after the revelation, Management tasked Internal Audit as well as Post Clearance Audit (PCA) Department to conduct an audit on the identified agents and importers in accordance with sections 7 and 9 of the Customs Act 2015 (Act 891) and the World Customs Organisation Revised Kyoto Convention.

The audit found that 23 Bills of Entry (BOEs), with 22 belonging to one shipping line, had their entries dotted and some of the imports declared by the identified companies were misdescribed and misclassified as well as undervalued for purposes of paying lower Customs duties and taxes.

He said an audit of just one of the Bills of Entry

showed a tax evasion of 10.15 million cedis.

The audit also showed that some Agents processed customs declarations with inaccurate particulars with the aim of paying lower Customs duties and taxes while providing cloned Customs declarations containing actual descriptions of the goods, the actual Customs value, and duty rates and collected the amount payable from the importer.

“So, it means they’re cheating both the importers and the government. So, we went to the importers he will show you a customs declaration that they gave to him but that was not what he submitted to us,” he said.

Alhaji Iddisah said during the investigation the two companies admitted that their officers had falsified the actual description of the goods which was submitted from the ship to them, adding that investigations were still ongoing to find out the level of collusion of the importers.

“We want all those involved and we want to give a warning to everybody that you cannot hide whatever

happens it will come up and those who are into that practice can own up,” he added.

It was additionally revealed that the Bills of Lading from the shipping lines and invoices declared to Customs were falsified by the local shipping line.

Alhaji Iddisah said following the discovery of the discrepancies, management had decided to expand investigations to the past six years to find out other companies engaged in the negative practice.

He said while management was not ruling out the connivance of customs officers, investigations were yet to actually establish the involvement of officers, adding that the initial intelligence came from the officers.

Alhaji Iddisah said demand notices had been issued for retrieving the taxes and penalties lost to the state and investigations were ongoing, which might lead to prosecution.

To further improve monitoring, Alhaji Iddisah said the Division was shifting the monitoring away from

the ports to the headquarters to ensure effective supervision, adding that while trying to facilitate speedy clearance via the green channel, Customs had now created a holding area to allow the officers to go through the screening properly and to call for re-examination if necessary.

“In fact, since we reintroduce it a lot of containers which are passed through the green channel have been reexamined at the port and the differences have been critical and we’ve given them penalties,” he added.
