Junior Ranks Recreation block named after late Trooper Imoro Sheriff

0

The 154 Armoured Regiment, one of the three Units at the 3Garrison in Sunyani under the 15 Armoured Brigade, Ghana Armed Forces, has named the Junior Ranks recreation block after the late Trooper Imoro Sheriff.

Trooper Sheriff, a junior officer of the 154 Regiment, was killed by some unidentified individuals at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region in March 2023.

The newly-named facility, ‘CheckPoint 5566’ would serve as a dedicated space for relaxation and entertainment for young soldiers after a long day’s work.

At a brief ceremony to inaugurate the building at the 3Garrison at New Dormaa, a suburb of Sunyani, Lieutenant Colonel Kofi Obiri-Yeboah, the outgoing Commanding Officer, 154 Armoured Regiment,  said the decision to name the building after Trooper Sheriff  was to perpetually immortalise him at the Regiment.

He said that was significant in view of the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death.

The name ‘CheckPoint 5566’ was chosen because Trooper Sheriff’s regimental number was 215566, saying the last four digits were thus adopted.

“We believe this building will serve as a lasting tribute to Trooper Sheriff, and we will always remember the sacrifice he made for our Regiment”, Lt. Col. Obiri-Yeboah stadigit

“The Regiment is awaiting justice for the young officer who lost his life in such a painful manner,” he said.

A CCTV surveillance system was also inaugurated for the Regiment as part of efforts to enhance security.

Money clout played a significant part in the Special Delegates Conference – Addai-Nimoh

0

Francis Addai-Nimoh, one of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer hopefuls, has cited financial influence as one of the primary issues that took centre stage at the party’s August 26 Extraordinary Delegates Conference.

When asked if the party’s flagbearer competition is about beliefs, ideas, and views, or money, the contender, whose destiny of being among the top five heading into the party’s November 4 regular conference depends on a September 2 election, identified three considerations, including honesty and intellect.

“I am aware of money influence, and there are three things I would want to discuss: financial influence, integrity, and intellect, and I will combine integrity and intelligence and leave financial influence alone.”

Mr. Addai Nimoh, who appeared on Citi TV‘s Face to Face, advised delegates not to focus solely on money when electing leaders for the party, but also to consider the integrity and intelligence of the aspirants.

“One must assess between financial influence and integrity and intelligence, and decide which one to go for when deciding who is the most suitable person to whom I should give my vote. So, my advice to delegates is that there is always motivation, but also look at integrity and intelligence. In the end, you are looking for someone in whom you can place your trust, someone who can manage your resources and use them for your benefit. So, only vote for the most suitable person.”

He went on to say that the 9 votes he received in the election, which put him in a run-off with Boakye Agyarko on September 2, came as a surprise to him.

“I was surprised with the results that came from the various regions because they were not the figures that I was hoping to get, and I was disappointed with what I had in the Ashanti Region which is my own region.”

We cannot afford not to be in government in 2025 – Edward Bawa

0

Mr Edward Abambire Bawa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region, says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot miss the opportunity to take over the administration of the country in 2025.

“We cannot afford not to be in government in 2025, and everything we need to do legally and lawfully, we should be able to do, and that is one of the things I will be contributing to,” he said.

He said even though he lost the Party’s Primaries to Mr Charles Bawadua, he was ready to support the NDC retain the seat in the Constituency and further capture power from the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

He said the NDC was bigger than all the Aspirants in the Primaries, and called on all to unite, strategize and focus on how to bring Mr John Dramani Mahama back to power and win more Parliamentary seats for the NDC.

Mr Bawa in his quest to ensure unity across the rank and file of the NDC after the Primaries spoke to journalists in an interview at the climax of his tour of the Constituency to interact with delegates on the need to unite, retain the seat and win the general elections.

The MP said there were often divisions after internal elections, emphasizing that “If we do not try to unite the Party, there will be challenges for us going into 2024 elections.

“So, I took it upon myself to ensure that I go round the Constituency and talk to delegates to see how we can unite the Party, unite behind John Mahama as the Presidential Candidate and Charles Bawadua as the Parliamentary Candidate,” he said.

He indicated that as a major stakeholder in the Party and in the Constituency, it was his responsibility to unite the Party, “That is what I have been doing since 2017 when I became a Member of Parliament.

“And it is not under my tenure that I will have the Party fractured,” Mr Bawa noted.

He said as part of his support to ensure the Parliamentary Candidate for the area retained the seat for the NDC, he had to interact with all delegates to unite and create the opportunity for Mr Bawadua to market himself.

“I believe that going forward, a discussion would be held to see what role the Candidate will think that I can play, because remember that this will be his campaign. As much as possible, I need to create space for the Candidate.

The MP further called for forgiveness among members of the various campaign teams and urged them to let go of whatever frictions that might have occurred during their respective campaigns.

Mr Bawa on behalf of members of his campaign team and supporters said they had forgiven anybody who might have said or did anything against them, and encouraged all delegates and teams to do same, so that they could stay peacefully in unity and campaign together for victory in 2024.

Students urged to set their minds on developing business ideas

0

Mrs Fatahiya Halidu Imoro, Executive Director of Malwin Foods, has urged students to set their minds on developing business ideas that will enable them create jobs before they complete school.

She said the scarcity of jobs and the increased interest in entrepreneurship education where many educational institutions were offering courses on the subject, provided ample opportunity for students to learn and practise what they learnt.

Mrs Imoro was speaking at the University for Development Studies’ (UDS) Faculty of Sustainable Development annual entrepreneurship seminar on the theme: “Entrepreneurship for Practice: Stimulating Entrepreneurial Spirit in Students.”

The seminar, organised by the Department of Development Management and Policy Studies (DDMPS), was to create platform for students of UDS to compete in an entrepreneurial skills development programme, which aimed at unearthing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills of students.

Mrs Imoro encouraged young persons to aim high and psyche themselves up for setbacks that might hinder their entrepreneurship dreams of promoting positive change as they made impact.

Dr Baba Musa, Head of DDMPS said the Department expected students to identify the basic problems of society that would require profitable and innovative ways of solving them.

He said, “A growing number of employers are no longer looking for graduates with the most impressive degrees, because they do not believe academic success is a sign of professional success.”

He called for measures such as more engagement of youth in decision-making, teaching attitude in class, exposing students to real life situation and introduction of entrepreneurship and French as compulsory subjects in the educational curricular from primary to tertiary.

He said, “The youth have been depending so much on the government. It is high time they took decisions and tried to do something for themselves like entering a business in support of what the government is doing. That is the first step to curb unemployment in the country.”

Dr Sulemana Achanso, Dean of Faculty of Sustainable Development Studies, UDS noted that one of the greatest challenges facing graduates was how to find employment.

Mr Iddrisu Abdul Rashid, An Entrepreneur, Lecturer and Consultant at UDS, encouraged the students to pursue their business ideas to explore various business pitching competitions to realise their goals.

Zenith Bank & PAPSS Partnership: Enhancing Cross-Border Trade for Ghanaian SMEs

0

Cross-border trade presents significant challenges for Ghanaian businesses.

The inefficiencies and high costs of existing payment systems hinder expansion beyond Ghana’s borders.

The complexities arising from differing currencies, rules, and intermediaries result in complicated transactions and substantial fees, eroding profits and global competitiveness.

However, amid these difficulties, entrepreneurs persevere, envisioning a future where seamless, real-time transactions facilitate international trade.

PAPSS: Revolutionizing African Cross-Border Trade

The hurdles faced by corporate entities, small and medium scale enterprises as well as individuals with cross-border trade are not unique; they resonate across Africa.

Zenith Bank’s partnership with the Pan African Payment and Settlements System (PAPSS), however, aims to revolutionize cross-border trade.

PAPSS, an initiative designed to promote intra-

African trade and reduce reliance on foreign parties (which currently costs the continent a staggering US$5 billion yearly through existing payment channels) presents a simplified, secure, and cheaper expeditious alternative, bridging the gap between trading partners within days, not weeks.

The platform also contributes to financial inclusion and African unity.

Ghanaian SMEs reaping the benefits

The partnership with PAPSS offers substantial advantages and opportunities for Ghanaian SMEs.

A pivotal benefit is the streamlining of cross-border payments.

Mr Kwame Adadey, Divisional Head of Zenith Bank, asserted that this collaboration underscores Africans’ ability to solve unique challenges collectively.

“It underscores our belief in the African project that, as Africans, we can provide solutions for our unique problems.  PAPSS is one of them,” Mr. Adadey said.

He said gone were the days of convoluted currency conversions and exorbitant transaction fees.

The Divisional Head of Zenith Bank said businesses in Ghana could now engage directly with counterparts across Africa, transacting in local currencies.

“This reduction in costs amplifies competitiveness and fosters growth,” he added.

Moreover, the efficient framework of PAPSS empowers Ghanaian SMEs to access previously unattainable markets and clients throughout the continent.

The eradication of trade barriers stemming from inefficient payment systems paves the way for unprecedented expansion.

Zenith Bank: The Ultimate Cross-Border Partner

Zenith Bank’s prominence as a financial services provider makes it an ideal choice for cross-border trade under PAPSS.

Its exceptional service quality, surpassing industry standards, and extensive continental network are standout attributes.

This network not only benefits large enterprises but significantly aids SMEs, enabling them to venture beyond national boundaries for growth.

Zenith Bank’s advanced technological infrastructure ensures secure, seamless transactions—a crucial component for cross-border traders.

Its digital banking solutions facilitate efficient financial operations, while its commitment to excellence reassures customers.

For SMEs navigating cross-border trade, Zenith Bank’s reliability and technological prowess are invaluable.

Mr. Adadey explained, “It boils down to why anyone would want to do business with Zenith Bank. Why are we the preferred choice?  One major aspect is the unparalleled quality of service we provide.”

He said Zenith Bank’s service standards surpass what customers would usually find elsewhere.

“I can confidently assure you that the customer experience is so exceptional that we witness a constant influx of non-customers who come in to carry out transactions, only to become loyal customers due to the speed and convenience we offer,” he added.

Spearheading Digitalization

As we move into the future, the financial sector is rapidly embracing digitalisation, and Zenith Bank stands at the forefront of this technological shift.

Consequently, Zenith Bank envisions a future where customers will be able to access PAPSS seamlessly without the need to physically visit a brick-and-mortar branch.

This digital transformation will undoubtedly enhance customer convenience and accessibility to financial services.

Guidance and Empowerment

Beyond financial services, Zenith Bank distinguishes itself through comprehensive advisory and financial sensitisation efforts.

These initiatives equip SMEs with the knowledge to navigate international trade intricacies, fortifying their decision-making and expanding their market reach.

 Continental Goals

Zenith Bank’s partnership extends beyond transactions. Its contributions to forums and engagements leverage its experience, enriching discussions on continental goals.

In the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the largest economic bloc in the world, which connects 1.3 billion people across 55 countries with a combined gross domestic product valued at US$3.4 trillion, partnership with PAPSS gains even more significance.

AfCFTA’s vast economic potential and Zenith Bank’s integration with PAPSS positions it as a key player in this continental trade revolution.

A Vision of Prosperity

Zenith Bank’s collaboration with PAPSS symbolizes a future where African trade transcends borders, fostering growth, success, and economic unity.

Through this transformative partnership, countless African traders envision a brighter future.

In the narrative of an economically prosperous Africa, the association echoes ‘Zenith Bank x PAPSS’.

The MCE recalled the assembly recognizing the growing demand for the greater openness and the need to improve upon existing civic participation within the municipality made the decision to join Government Reformers across the globe through the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2022.

“The Open Government Partnership is based on the idea that an open government is more accessible, more responsible, and more accountable to citizens and that improving the relationship between the people and their government has long-term exponential benefit for everyone,” he noted

Mr Kessie explained that the OGP was a nationwide partnership made up of 78 countries, 104 local governments and thousands of civil society organizations across the globe, adding, through the partnership, these powerful forces work together to co-create action plans with concrete steps, thus commitments-across a broad range of policy areas.

Youth urged to join credit unions amid economic challenges

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Swedru Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union (STCCU), Mr Joseph Acquaye, has urged  the youth to patronise the activities of credit unions and cultivate a savings habit  to enable them to derive the maximum benefits.

The youth should not forget that financial crisis could arise at any point in time and those shocks could only be absorbed if some investments had been made for a bailout, he said.

In an interview with  the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Agona Swedru in  the Central Region, Mr Acquaye said the advice also went to all traders at market centers and small and medium enterprise operators.

Similarly, he urged “big time” business executives to save with the Swedru Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union to enable them to receive financial support for business expansion.

The STCCU currently has 50,000 clients mostly teachers and market women in and around Agona West Municipality.

During the Union’s 19th Annual General Meeting held at Agona Swedru, the CEO said the union made significant growth in its operations as compared to the 2021 profit margin.

The total assets grew to 38, 768,737.72 million  cedis in 2022 from 32, 298,623.67 million   cedis in 2021.

Members savings increased to 28,672, 471.08 million cedis  in the  year under review from 24,299, 415.94 million  cedis the previous year.

Shares made significant increase to 10, 096, 266.64 million   cedis in 2022 as against 7,990, 358. 94 million Ghana cedis in 2021.

The total liability and equity of the union increased to 38, 768, 737.72 million Ghana cedis in 2022 as against 32,298, 623.67 million  cedis in 2021.

Mr Acquaye said the net surplus of the union also made giant growth to 1, 746, 327 .30 million Ghana Cedis in 2022 as against 1,521, 407.18 million  cedis in the 2021 fiscal year.

These successes were chalked because of  the digitalised and re-branded financial evolution it had embarked on, he said.

“The expansion of the union and its growth calls for drastic decisions, especially in the use of IT tools, short codes, internet banking and others to meet the expansionary vision of the union,” the CEO said.

He said the post COVID-19  challenges were enormous, bringing to the fore the importance of savings through digitalisation to facilitate the processes and ensure safety.

The union was strategically positioning itself in Credit Union movements across Africa and beyond to concretise the gains made and enhance growth,  he noted.

Gabon: Army officers claim to be seizing power

0

Army commanders in Gabon have gone on national television to declare that they had taken power.

They proclaimed the results of Saturday’s election, in which President Ali Bongo was declared the winner, null and void.

According to the electoral commission, Mr Bongo received slightly under two-thirds of the vote in an election that the opposition said was rigged.

His demise would end his family’s 53-year reign in Gabon.

On Wednesday, twelve soldiers appeared on television, declaring the cancellation of the election results and the dissolution of “all the institutions of the republic.”

They also said the country’s borders had been closed “until further notice”.

One of the soldiers said on TV channel Gabon 24: “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime.”

This, he added, was down to “irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos”.

Journalists from the Reuters and AFP news agencies reported the sounds of loud gunfire could be heard in the country’s capital, Libreville, following the broadcast.

There was no immediate response by the government to the soldiers’ announcement.

As in previous general elections in Gabon, there were serious concerns about the process in Saturday’s vote.

Main opposition candidate Albert Ondo Ossa complained that many polling stations lacked ballot papers bearing his name, while the coalition he represents said the names of some of those who had withdrawn from the presidential race had still been on the ballot sheet.

Campaign group Reporters Without Borders said foreign media had been banned from setting foot in the country to cover the vote.

As polls closed, the government announced a curfew and suspension of internet access for security reasons.

Both of Mr Bongo’s previous wins were disputed as fraudulent by opponents. This time, controversial changes were made to voting papers just weeks before election day.

Mr Bongo came to power when his father Omar died in 2009.

In 2018, he suffered a stroke which sidelined him for almost a year and led to calls for him to step aside.

The following year, a failed coup attempt saw mutinying soldiers sent to prison.
