Kudus to the rescue! Despite losing a two-goal lead against South Korea, Ghana still manages to win an important World Cup game.

0
  • Salisu opened scoring before Kudus doubled lead
  • Quick double from Cho pulled Korea level
  • Kudus well placed to secure the winner

TELL ME MORE: Mohammed Salisu broke the deadlock in the Group H clash when a free-kick into the box landed perfectly for him to lash home and then Mohammed Kudus got on the end of a Jordan Ayew cross to nod in his team’s second. Korea fought back in the second half as Cho Gue-sung headed in twice in the space of three minutes, but Kudus popped up with the vital winner in the 68th minute.

THE MVP: Despite his team’s defeat, Cho was a bright spark for the Asian nation as he got on the end of two crosses to pull his side back into the game. He reacted quicker than Salisu to get on the end of Lee Kang-In’s ball in and diverted it home, and three minutes later he backed off of Gideon Mensah and rose high to put the ball beyond Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. Cho also managed to completely outshine Korea’s poster boy Son Heung-min, who struggled to make an impact in the final third once again.

THE BIG LOSER: Kwon Chang-Hoon could do little to influence the game and it was no surprise to see him taken off just 12 minutes into the second half. The substitution proved to be the perfect decision as his replacement, Lee Kang-In, assisted South Korea’s first goal just a minute after coming off the bench.

Transport Minister commends Freight Forwarders

0

Mr. Seth Kwame Acheampong, Eastern Regional Minister, has commended freight forwarders for their immense role in the global supply chain.

“Freight Forwarders’ various roles and activities make them indispensable in the current global supply chain,” Mr. Acheampong stated at the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) 25th Annual General Meeting in Koforidua, Eastern Regional.

The GIFF 2022 annual general meeting deliberated on how freight forwarders can maintain their relevance in a turbulent global supply chain.

The Eastern Regional Minister noted: “From Customs Brokerage to compliance, networking, scheduling, inventory management, warehousing, administration and documentation, the freight forwarder clearly maintains his relevance in the current turbulent global supply chain.”

Mr. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Minister of Transport noted that to ensure a competitive business environment, there is a need to harmonise and standardise shipping line charges.

He stressed the need “to negotiate for minimum service standards and more importantly, build a strong regulatory framework for enforcement and compliance.”

The transport minister said the ministry will ensure non-proliferation of charges at the Ports, arbitrary increases of charges, improved service quality, and value for money.

Leveraging technology and building capacity and partnerships across the global supply value chain, Mr. Asiamah said, could provide a competitive advantage in the service provision.

“I therefore want to take this opportunity to urge the Institute to provide the needed support and capacity building to ensure that members are abreast with modern trends in the industry,” he stated.

Mr. Asiamah revealed that the Ghana Shippers Authority Act has some inefficiencies, which precluded them from exercising their Authority, therefore, the act would be amended to give them more power.

He noted that sustainable shipping is the future of the industry, hence, the need to ensure that the maritime industry evolves along that trajectory.

“Ensuring environmentally friendly ports and promoting regulations for green shipping through technology and renewable energy along the shipping value chain are some of the interventions being pursued by the government.

“Therefore, ensuring green logistics operations across the logistics value chain is a strategy that we must all pursue in our various capacities,” Mr Asiamah stated.

Daasebre Nana Kwaku Boateng III, Omanhene of New Juaben, who chaired the event appealed to freight forwarders, to be honest in their dealings with importers and refrain from acts of distortion.

HFFG and partners embark on Condom Activation Campaign

0

Ahead of the 2022 World AIDS Day, Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), an NGO, has held a ‘Condom Activation Campaign’ to promote safer sexual practices among the public, especially the youth.

The campaign, embarked on, in collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission and NAP+ Ghana, with support from the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), was also to create awareness on the reality of HIV and AIDS among the people.

The exercise saw traders and drivers at Kaneshie market, sensitized them on the need to use condoms to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

World AIDS Day, celebrated on December 1, annually, brings together people from around the world to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and to demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic.

The day is an opportunity for public and private partners to spread awareness about the status of the pandemic and encourage progress in HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, and care around the world.

Mrs. Cecilia Senoo, the Executive Director of HFFG, called for the need for exercise, which had become crucial due to the increasing rate of new HIV infections, especially among the youth.

She said the increase in new HIV infections was a clear indication that people were having unprotected sex because most of the infections recorded were through unprotected sex.

“We cannot really achieve HIV free generation, if we do not protect, educate and take care of ourselves. So, this exercise’s purpose is to create awareness on HIV prevention and one way to prevent HIV is by using condom, Mrs Senoo started.

Dr Stella Gyamfi, the In-charge of Kaneshie Polyclinic and Okaikoi South Health Director, sensitizing the public, noted that the initiative was important and had the potential to affect many and change lives.

She said global figures according to World Health Organisation (WHO) indicate that, about 38.4 million people were living with HIV in 2021, of this staggering figure, 36.7 million were adults and 1.7 million children.

Dr Gyamfi noted that currently the number of people who have tested positive to HIV infection in Ghana from January to June stands at 23,495.

In Greater Accra Region, the total number of new infections is 4,661.

She said the problem of HIV was not just the disease affecting the individual, but its impact on households, communities, development, and economic growth of nations.

“For this reason we are all going to work hard to stop the spread of infection by practicing safe sex, avoid sharing blades and needles especially among people injecting illicit drugs.

“Pregnant women who have also been infected should also adhere strictly to treatment regimens and breastfeeding protocols.

Dr Gyamfi said the need for collaborative efforts from all had become necessary to reach out to the populace, especially the vulnerable through various means and advised the public to test and know their HIV status adding “This singular act has the potential to save you and many others. Knowing is better,” she said.

The HFFG earlier held a similar event in Kasoa in the Central Region.

Lineups and LIVE updates for South Korea vs. Ghana

Who will win as South Korea and Ghana compete against one another in a pivotal match?

Ghana lost to Portugal 3-2 in a fiercely contested match, while South Korea were held to a scoreless draw by Uruguay in their opening game. Even though both nations are winless, Group H still has a lot to play for, and a victory might increase either team’s prospects of moving on to the next round.

Many people have compared South Korea to a team that advances far in the World Cup. The Koreans, however, failed to have a single shot on target for the third time in their last five games against Uruguay, mirroring their pattern from earlier championships. Even so, they have scored multiple goals whenever they have faced African nations at this stage and will hope their past momentum helps them get all three points.

Ghana were unlucky not to get a point against Portugal and will be hoping to get their first win in five World Cup games. They would also be hoping to make it past the group stages for the first time since 2010, having failed to do so in 2014 and 2018. What works in their favour is, that, unlike their opponents, they have scored in each of their previous six matches in the competition. With the Koreans also having never won the second game in the group stages, the past may favour Ghana.

South Korea vs Ghana confirmed lineups

South Korea XI (4-2-3-1): Kim S.; Kim M.H., Kim Y., Kim M., Kim J.; Hwang, W. Jung; Kwon, Jeong, Son; G. Cho

South Korea and Ghana’s upcoming fixtures

Both South Korea and Ghana’s next games against tough opponents could be decisive for them to make it to the next round. The former will face Portugal on Friday, 2nd December at the Education City stadium, meanwhile, the latter will take on Uruguay at the same date and time in the Al Janoub stadium.

  • Cameroon trailed 3-1 against Serbia
  • Aboubakar chipped one in to cut the deficit
  • He then set up their third to seal 3-3 draw

WHAT HAPPENED? Cameroon were 3-1 down against Serbia but Aboubakar managed to give them a spark in the second half when he scored with a fantastic chip. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but it was given after a VAR review. Moments later, Aboubakar turned creator when he squared to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who fired in the third.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Choupo-Moting’s goal proved decisive as the game finished 3-3, securing a vital point for Cameroon and Serbia. The two teams still have a chance of going through to the knockout rounds if they manage to get positive results in their final games of the group stage.

WHAT NEXT FOR CAMEROON AND SERBIA? After facing Serbia, Cameroon have the unenviable task of coming up against Brazil in their third and final game of the group stage. Serbia, meanwhile, will take on Switzerland.

Stakeholders disagree with the policy on forex withdrawal

0

Some trade stakeholders have expressed disagreement with the Bank of Ghana’s (BOG) policy to withdraw forex support for the importation of selected products classified as non-critical goods.

The BOG announced its intentions not to provide forex support to importation of rice, vegetable oil, toothpick, pasta, fruit juice, bottled water, ceramics, and tiles.

Reacting to the policy, at a forum, the stakeholders said the policy lacks enough stakeholder engagement and an effective contingency plan as it came in a rush in accordance with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s directive in a recent national address as part of measures to save Ghana’s economy.

Mr. Appiah Kusi Adomako, the West African Regional Director of Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) International, said Ghana could not forever import everything it needs as a country, adding, however, that stopping the dependence on imports requires the relevant capacity to produce to meet the local demand and export.

Mr. Kusi-Adomako added that as it stood now, the country’s total demand did not match its local capacity to produce leading to a deficit.

He indicated that the withdrawal of forex support could lead to a shortage of food as without forex support, importers would be unable to bring in essential food products, while Ghana was not self-sufficient yet when it comes to feeding all its people.

He called on the BOG to take into consideration the welfare implications on households as the commodities would be expensive and people do not earn nearly enough, adding that things would get worse when there is scarcity.

He said while such a policy will bring long-term benefits such as strengthening the cedi, creating jobs, and growing local industries, without an effective strategy in place, the policy could worsen the economic crisis.

Mr. Kusi-Adomako said the BOG would have to liaise with other key institutions such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Statistical Service in coming up with such a drastic policy.

He suggested that with such a move, the approach would be data-driven and all-encompassing to ascertain Ghana’s readiness to implement such a policy, adding that the government must also come up with an effective and timely contingency plan that would make up for the production deficit.

Mr. Michael Obiri-Agyei, the Executive Director of the EXIM Frozen Foods Association, Ghana, on his part, even though the policy was intended for good, it had not been carefully thought through.

Mr. Obiri-Agyei reiterated the lack of extensive stakeholders’ consultation to help appreciate the wisdom behind the directive and help them plan, questioning how an importer who has already engaged his suppliers to import frozen food with the intention of relying on BOG forex assistance to pay, prior to the introduction of the policy would survive.

He revealed that the policy would not solve the problem but would rather open them up to the black market, which could not be controlled adding that others might also decide to import through Togo and smuggle the goods into the system.

Dr. Joseph Obeng the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) said the moment BOG announced the directive, they knew it was the beginning of greater challenges for Ghanaians.

He said people might begin hoarding, leading to a rise in demand and subsequently, pressure would be placed on the imported goods and prices would hike.

Dr. Obeng stated that Ghanaian traders were open to sourcing goods locally, but only if Ghana could produce at the same capacity, standard quality, and at competitive prices.

He appealed to the government to take a measured approach in trying to discontinue the importation of the commodities, adding they have always had the opinion that local production should be promoted side by side with importation.

Threats of violent extremism: NPC engages market women at Asawase

0

As violent extremism looms in the West African sub-Region, the National Peace Council (NPC) has been engaging various stakeholders to sensitise them on the threats to Ghana’s peace and stability.

The goal is to sensitise the public to be on the lookout for suspicious characters in communities and public places to avert a possible strike by insurgents.

With funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the NPC has engaged the various market women in the Asokore Mampong Municipality on the need to be alert and vigilant in the markets.

They must pay attention to activities of everyone that visits their markets and immediately report strange and suspicious characters to the security agencies for prompt action.

Rev. Emmanuel Badu Amoah, the Regional Executive Secretary of the Council, who addressed the women, said the initiative also sought to equip participants with knowledge and skills to identify early warning signs.

He said society needed a peaceful atmosphere to survive the devastating effects of violent extremism and conflicts.

“The looming threats of terrorism in the West African Sub-Region, coupled with other security challenges facing the country, is an indication of the need for every individual to be security conscious,” he said.

He said no one was immune from the negative consequences in times of conflicts, hence the need to collectively work together and maintain peace in the country.

Ghanaians, he noted, were known for their tolerance and the desire to co-exist peacefully with one another and called for the maintenance of the peace to drive socio-economic development.

“Each and everyone have a role to play in building sustainable peace for our country,” he said.

Rev. Amoah entreated the women to get involved in the national effort to protect the citizenry from violent extremists by “saying something anytime you see something”.

2022 FIFA WC: Ghana aims to win against Korea to enhance qualification chances

0

The Black Stars of Ghana will face Group H counterparts, South Korea in a must-win match when they travel to the Education City Stadium on Monday, to grab their first win in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

The Stars after failing to pick a point against Portugal, following a 3-2 defeat would take up their chances of grabbing all three points against the Asian side to brighten their chances in the final group game.

Korea began their World Cup campaign on an impressive note after holding Uruguay to a goalless draw game to sit in second place, ahead of Uruguay and Ghana.

Both sides have met on four previous occasions in friendly matches, with Ghana emerging victors three times which makes them the favourites going into the clash.

The last meeting in 2014 saw Ghana hammer Korea 4-0, an emphatic win that would boost the confidence of Coach Addo’s charges.

Interaction with the players showed the players have put the opening match defeat behind them to go all out and clinch the much-needed three points at the expense of Taeguk Warriors of Korea. Coach Otto Addo will possibly parade the likes of skipper Andre Ayew, Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Inaki William against South Korea’s Son Heung-min, Kim Seung-Gyu,  and Lee Kang-in who are in top form.

The odds favour Ghana to clinch the win having been the first African team to hit bag two goals despite losing, with Paulo Bento’s charges chasing their first goal of the tournament.

Though Bento is wary of the experience and quality in the Black Stars squad, Addo would need to devise a tactical approach to dispatch the Asian team and prevent an early exit from the competition.

The Tigers of Asia, rated 28th best team in the world, despite their attacking prowess with Totengham Hostspurs clinical finisher Hon-Heung-min leading the pack failed to post a shot on target for the second time in four World Cup games during the Uruguay stalemate, and Ghana certainly would capitalize on the deficiency to emerge victors.

The Black Stars after the South Korea clash would face Uruguay in their last Group stage clash, hoping to make it to the round of 16.

Next NDC Gov’t will modernise Aflao – Former Prez Mahama

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama has assured the chiefs and people of the Aflao Traditional Area of their fair share of development projects when the NDC is voted into office in 2024.

He acknowledged that the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government was aware of the development shortfalls of the area, and by extension the Ketu South Municipality, and promised to address those shortfalls when back in office.

Mr Mahama said this during the  grand durbar of the chiefs and people of  Aflao on Saturday as part of activities to climax this year’s Godigbe Festival.

The festival was put on hold for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s celebration  coincided with the 25th anniversary of the coronation of the Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, Torgbuiga Amenya Fiti V.

Mr Mahama said Aflao, being the most prominent border town in Ghana, required a facelift for a better outlook.

“I had talks with our prominent Paramount Chief, Torgbuiga  Amenya Fiti, when I was in office. In fact, we had agreed that due to the strategic location of Aflao as the most prominent border town in the country, there should be a modern market on the Aflao side just as with our counterparts on other side in Lome,” he said.

The former President decried the deplorable state of the town’s roads, especially the Aflao-Diamond Cement Road and the Komla Dumor Road, which lead to the Chief’s Palace.

He said the Ho-Aflao Road must also be given urgent attention by the Government of the day.

Mr Mahama emphasised the importance of the chieftaincy institution as a repository of Ghana’s traditions and customs, playing a pivotal role in advocacy and national development.

He commended Torgbuiga  Fiti on his election as the President of the Forum of Kings and Traditional Rulers of Africa and urged him to use that high recognition to do more for his people and the country.

Mr Ambrose Dery, the Minister of the Interior, who represented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, said the Government is committed to improving the well-being of every Ghanaian.

The country had some setbacks in its bid to accelerate development and better the lot of the masses, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, he said.

“These brought in untold hardships across the globe, but the Government of Ghana is hopeful that things will turn around with its sound economic policies and programmes. We assure Ghanaians of better days ahead,” he said.

Torgbuiga Fiti, under whose auspices the festival was held, called on the Government to implement pro-poor programmes to improve the living conditions of the people.

Due to the lack of job opportunities some of the youth “engage in smuggling and other unorthodox activities just to earn a living,” he said, a called for a change of the status quo.

He commended his divisional and sub-chiefs and all indigenes of Aflao for their loyalty over the years and called for fellow feeling and togetherness as “we work together toward the forward march of our dear traditional area.”

He expresse appreciation to all corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals who supported the festival.

The festival was on the theme: “25 Years of Inspirational Leadership and the Restoration of the Rights and Privileges of the Aflawuawo.”

Let’s work to maintain Ghana’s peace, security – President Akufo-Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the citizenry to work hard to ensure Ghana keeps the prevailing peace and security to propel economic development.

He said those two ingredients were what investors looked out for in a country before investing their resources and that Ghana already had them, making her an attractive investment destination, hence the need to protect same.

The President said this in a speech read for him by Mr Ambrose Dery, the Minister of the Interior, who represented him at the 25th Anniversary of the coronation of Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, the Paramount Chief of Aflao, and the climax of the Godigbe Festival.

The festival was on the theme: “25 Years of Inspirational Leadership and the Restoration of the Rights and Privileges of the Aflawuawo.”

“The existence of peace and security are necessary prerequisites for economic development of the country. Ghana as a country has been blessed over time to remain stable and peaceful,” he said.

“For the last two consecutive years, Ghana has been noted as the second most peaceful country in Africa behind the Island of Mauritius…”

“I wish to, therefore, call on all of you to join hands in a collective effort to ensure that Ghana continues to be peaceful and safe for us all to achieve the goals of government…”

President Akufo-Addo commended the security agencies for their roles in keeping the peace and security of the country and assured of providing them with all the necessary logistics to facilitate their work and expressed the government’s commitment to the wellbeing of Ghanaians.

The government’s bold but difficult decisions had resulted in some gains, he said, notwithstanding the current challenges, adding that government would work to bring the country back to the road of prosperity.

The Godigbe Festival of the chiefs and people of Aflao and the coronation anniversary had former President John Dramani in attendance as well as a delegation of chiefs from other parts of Ghana and the republics of Togo and Benin.

They were treated to exciting cultural displays and music.
