200 apprentices sensitised on sexual reproductive rights, child marriage

0

The Department of Gender has trained 200 apprentices on Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (ASRHR), Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and child marriage.

Mrs Thywill Eyra Kpe, Volta Regional Director, Department of Gender, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency after a sensitisation programme for some apprentices at Anfoega in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region.

She said the 200 beneficiaries were from Akatsi North and North Dayi Districts and that the training was one of the interventions being implemented by the Department under the auspices of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council as part of the UNFPA Seventh Country Programme.

The Director said the training aimed at equipping the beneficiaries with the relevant information regarding their reproductive rights and to help reduce misinformation among them and increase their knowledge on sexual health.

Mrs Kpe said most of the young girls who were out of school found it difficult to have access to information on sexual and gender-based violence, reproductive health rights, family planning and the use of contraceptives.

This, she said, has led to some of them getting pregnant and could not continue their apprenticeship, thus the training to educate and support them to prevent unwanted pregnancies to keep them in their vocation.

The Director said parental neglect was one of the major causes of challenges bedeviling adolescents as most parents were not bonding well with their children to educate them on sexual and reproductive health issues.

The Department, she said, had decided to form community parent groups in some of the communities, including Wadamaxe and Wusuta in the North Dayi District.

”These groups were formed to help educate parents on their responsibilities and the need to build good relationships with their adolescents and support them to realise their full potential,”she stated.

Madam Hilda Kotoh, Public Health Nurse at the North Dayi Health Directorate, noted that when adolescents acquire the necessary information about their sexual rights and freedoms, they would become empowered to take the right decisions and would not be intimidated.

She asked the participants to abstain from sexual activities and those who were sexually active and could not abstain to use contraceptives to protect themselves against sexually transmitted infections and teenage pregnancy.

Madam Charity Mensah, Gender Desk Officer at the North Dayi Assembly, disclosed that teenage pregnancy was on the ascendency in the district due to parental irresponsibility and “inquisitiveness of the young girls.”

She commended the Department of Gender for the initiative and called on all, including parents, to support the initiative to help address issues of teenage pregnancy, sexual and gender-based violence and child marriage.

Institutions must push for integration, digitalization of data-driven enterprises in Africa – CSEA

0

The Center for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) has urged development institutions, governments, and international donor agencies to push the agenda of integration and digitalization of data-driven enterprises in Africa.

The CSEA called on key stakeholders in Africa to discuss the next step required to steer the continent in the right direction in relation to data governance.

The CSEA said it had noticed that data governance gaps were necessitated by concerns of security, lack of infrastructures and privacy issues, as many data driven enterprises did not know how their data is managed and managed, these gaps do not create a conducive environment for investment in data-driven enterprises in the African Sub-region.

However, this gap can be solved by investing funds to develop skills and infrastructure in data analytics whereby government creates freely accessible training platforms for data analytics, data governance and the digital economy for small businesses and independent workers.

Policies must be implemented to promote universal access to internet data services, which will ensure that countries have adequate infrastructure to exchange, store, and process data efficiently over the internet

Government, private sectors, and development agencies need to champion the implementation of policies and initiatives that can make data more open to businesses and orgnisations that needs them.

This can be done by creating a common platform where experts from different countries can collaborate and access shared local data from government agencies, especially in Africa.

In addition, there is the need for data-driven enterprises to develop capabilities and skills in data analytics.

Dr Adedeji Adeniran, Director of Research at CSEA, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said Africa needed to focus on digitalization.

He said good data governance in Africa must be integrated and digitalize to help effective retrieving of reliable data, which local industries and institutions can tap into for references.

“We need good data governance to prevent cybercrime, digital identity fraud, censorship of data, issues of cross boarder data flow, data sovereignty, and localization issues.”

“If countries come together to support and share knowledge with unified regulatory framework, investors can trust in African countries for grand investments which will generate revenue for the country,” he said.

The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) is an independent nonprofit research organisation established in April 2008 out of the need to bridge the gap caused by the paucity of rigorous empirical research that affects the quality of policies implemented in African countries.

CSEA is poised to assist in disseminating best practices to enable African governments to improve their public fiscal management systems.

Fisheries Ministry engages stakeholders in bunkering services

0

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in collaboration with GOIL Company Limited, has engaged stakeholders in the industry to discuss fuel bunkering services for marine fishing vessels.

The meeting was also to identify problems hindering the sector and find pragmatic solutions to improve the sector and ensure sustainability for the workers

The meeting also discussed illegal bunkering services and other activities hampering progress in the sector.

Mrs. Mavis Hawa Koomson, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said fuel bunkering constituted an important operation for marine fishing vessels and so the ministry agree on the need  to guarantee safe, timely, and closely monitored bunkering services for vessel owners.

She said  vessel owners also need to be protected from piracy, extremist activities, and any issues bothering transshipment.

The Minister said currently, the offshore Marine Gasoil (MGO) bunkering operations within the Ghanaian territorial waters were mainly serviced by oil companies who may not necessarily have the requisite operating permits from the regulatory bodies.

It is worth noting that payments and proceeds realized from the sale of MGO to fishing vessels in Ghana by the companies were paid directly into foreign accounts and thereby depriving Ghana of the necessary foreign exchange and taxes, she stated.

She expressed worry at the rate of illegalities in the sector and urged the stakeholders to adhere to the rules and regulations governing the fisheries sector.

Mr. J. B. Tagoe, GOIL Head of Technical and Special Products, said there was a need for transparency, truthfulness, honesty, and a high sense of integrity in doing business as the disruption caused by COVID-19 pandemic led to significant global economic downtown, which also led to the global recession.

He said GOIL throughout the last two years, offered offshore bunkering operations alongside the several years of delivering MGO on shore at the Ghana Bunkering Service (GBS) Tema, Sekondi Naval Base, and Takoradi Port.

Mr. Tagoe said GOIL would continue to build a dynamic organization while remaining committed to its aspirations, mandate, and mission.

He said GOIL would continue to have a longer and more fruitful connection with the Ministry, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.

In Los Angeles, Lyft and Motional will provide driverless taxi trips.

0

Ioniq 5 EV Level 4 robotaxis will be used by Lyft and Motional to launch a driverless ride-hailing service in Los Angeles. The two businesses, which earlier this year began providing public rides in Las Vegas, will start serving Los Angeles as their second location.

Exactly two years have passed since Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, began testing autonomous vehicles without safety drivers. The Ioniq 5 vehicles will be included into Lyft’s Los Angeles network, similar to the Las Vegas service. The Lyft app can be used to unlock the doors when the car arrives, and there is a passenger display in every car that can be used to reach a remote agent at any time.

“Los Angeles was the second city Lyft launched back in 2013 and it’s only fitting that it will be the second AV market we launch with our partner, Motional,” said Lyft CEO Logan Green in a statement. “Los Angeles is the second most populated city in the U.S. and represents a huge market opportunity for AV adoption,” added Motional CEO Karl Iagnemma.

Motional says it has given 100,000-plus rides in Las Vegas with Lyft and received over 95 percent five-star ratings. The company recently signed a 10-year agreement with Uber as well, saying its vehicles will be “strategically deployed” in cities around the US and that it will start offering passenger rides later this year.

Apart from Motional, only Alphabet division Waymo and GM’s Cruise are offering true driverless services at a reasonably large scale. The Waymo One service is operating in Phoenix and San Francisco, while Cruise rides are currently limited to San Francisco. Both operate only in specific areas of cities and some vehicles still use safety riders.

Despite beating Switzerland, fans criticize the Black Stars tandem, saying “The Ayew brothers deserve Ghana sideline.”

0

Prior to the World Cup, Ghana played their final friendly match, with the two brothers starting.

Jordan and Andrew Ayew’s performances against Switzerland in a friendly match on Thursday were not well received by the crowd.

Both stars got off to a good start, but in the 62nd, coach Otto Addo substituted Antoine Semenyo for Jordan.

Semenyo went on to score the second goal for the Black Stars in the 74th minute, becoming the first player in history to score for his country. Along with Daniel Barnieh of Hearts of Oaks, who was given his first senior start for the Black Stars, the Bristol City forward received acclaim from supporters for this accomplishment.
But the Ayew brothers’ performance was what really infuriated fans on Twitter. Inaki Williams also drew flak for giving in too easily to Swiss players’ challenges.

Jordan is doing well, however, he should release the ball on time. Daniel Afriyie Bannieh is excellent. Tariq Lamptey is one brilliant guy today.

Inaki Williams should be an African, not a Spanish. He gives up too easily and falls frequently. He should be strong. – @taadibanyinbagh

After receiving racist comments online, Nkunku sends Camavinga support, saying that the World Cup should be a time of peace.

  • Nkunku injured from Camavinga’s tackle in training
  • Camavinga received racist abuse online
  • Nkunku supported midfielder in Tweet

WHAT HAPPENED? France confirmed on Tuesday that Nkunku had suffered a leg injury following a tackle from the Real Madrid midfielder in a pre-World Cup training session, ruling him out of the tournament and leaving him on the sidelines for RB Leipzig until the new year. Camavinga was subjected to racist abuse online as a result, something which the RB Leipzig forward was quick to address in a tweet concerning his early World Cup exit.

WHAT THEY SAID: “A thought to my teammate Eduardo Camavinga, who has been unfairly targeted,” Nkunku wrote. “The World Cup should be a moment of harmony, not of division. Thank you to all the staff and my teammates for their help. I will be your biggest supporter. Make us proud!”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: The French Football Federation (FFF) also condemned the abuse aimed at Camavinga, writing: “Following Christopher Nkunku’s injury, Eduardo Camavinga was the victim of racist messages on social media. The FFF condemns these attacks in the strongest possible terms and is in full support of Eduardo.”

In Nkunku’s place, Didier Deschamps elected Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani, as France go in defence of their 2018 crown.

DID YOU KNOW? Nkunku was directly involved in 33 Bundesliga goals in 2022, more than any other player. Fellow Frenchmen Moussa Diaby (23) and Alassane Plea (21) follow in second and third place.

WHAT NEXT FOR FRANCE? In Nkunku’s absence, France kick off their World Cup defence against Australia next Wednesday.

Neville insists that Man Utd must end Ronaldo’s contract “in the next few days.”

0
  • Neville says there is ‘no way back’ for Ronaldo
  • Former United man says club has to act
  • Shares his thoughts on the infamous interview

WHAT HAPPENED? The former United defender has insisted Ronaldo’s time at Old Trafford is over following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, stating that the club have no choice but to rip up his contract. The two men once played together at United, but this is not the first time that Neville has aired his thoughts on his former team-mate’s conduct this season, and he can’t see any way back for him after his controversial comments.

WHAT HE SAID: Speaking to Sky Sports News, Neville said: “No, I don’t think [Ronaldo] wants a way back. He wouldn’t have done this interview if he wanted a way back. I think this interview, to be fair, was one that he knew would bring about the headlines that it has, and would bring the end of his Manchester United career. At this moment in time, I’m wondering what Manchester United are doing, because the reality of it is they know they have to terminate Cristiano’s contract, or else they basically open up a precedent that any player can come in and criticise [the club] in the future.

“Cristiano probably wants that as well, but it didn’t need to end like that. It could’ve come together a few weeks ago and navigated a smooth pathway, through what potentially could’ve been choppy seas to the shore, but it’s not happened. I agree with some of the things Cristiano has said, but the reality is if you’re an employee within a business and you say those things, then your employment has to terminate, and there’s no doubt Manchester United have to do that in the next few days.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: The club has acknowledged Ronaldo’s shock interview with a statement of their own, but it remains to be seen what will happen next, and whether they will decide to cut ties entirely with the 37-year-old. With Ronaldo clearly wanting out of Old Trafford, the club may have to wait until the January transfer window to find a solution for all parties.

WHAT NEXT FOR RONALDO? The Portuguese forward is currently away with his country at the World Cup in Qatar as they prepare for their first game in Group H against Ghana on November 24.

Second fatal building collapse in Kenya claims two lives in the past three days.

0

Two tragedies in three days. On Thursday (Nov. 17), a multi-story building under construction on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital fell on a nearby house, killing at least two people, according to authorities.

Since there is a great need for housing, shady developers frequently ignore the law.

Unsafe buildings have been warned about by construction authorities. The parents of Fredrick Kamau died young.

“When the house began to collapse and finally fell on Mum and Dad, they were still inside. When the ambulance arrived to save them, they discovered that they had already passed away and that the building had not yet been finished.”

Three other people have been rescued alive from the family home that was next to the collapsed building located in the Ruaka suburb.

“This is not the first story or rather instance. In the course of this one week we have had two buildings that have collapsed. We have lost innocent lives”, resident Willy Kamau lamented.

Last month we had a woman and her children that were buried; innocent they were also same case. They were not in the building, but a building near their house collapsed and the mother and the children just died like that. So we are asking this is the work of the county government it is not even the national government. The approvals, the drawings and everything is the work of the county government.”

After building collapses in Kenya in 2015, the presidency ordered an audit to see if the country’s buildings were up to code. The National Construction Authority found that 58% of the buildings in Nairobi were unfit for habitation.

Child and Vulnerable Protection Project increases enrolment at basic school

0

Authorities of the Ando-Nyamanu Roman Catholic Primary School in the Chereponi District of the North East Region have commended the Child and Vulnerable Protection Project for helping to increase enrolment in the school.

They gave the commendation at a community durbar on protection and development of children at Nyamanu in the district.

The durbar, which brought together various stakeholders in the district, was organised by the Catholic Diocese of Yendi as part of the Child and Vulnerable Protection Project.

The Child and Vulnerable Protection Project was launched early this year with funding support from Kindermissionwerk, a German Catholic funding agency, and aimed at reaching out to about 2,250 vulnerable children in 13 basic schools within the Catholic Diocese of Yendi.

It was also intended to create awareness on the negative phenomenon of child abuse and its impact on the growth and development of children through the formation of child protection clubs in selected schools.

Madam Kotei Kate, Headmistress of the Ando-Nyamanu Roman Catholic Primary School, who gave the commendation during the durbar, said the project had helped to minimise school drop-out amongst pupils of the school thereby increasing enrolment.

Madam Kate said, “Our student population before the implementation of this project was around 400 students but now we have a total population of 670 students.”

She added that the students were now punctual to school and at other academic activities and thereby improving their academic performance.

Mr David Yiridong Issaka, Project Advisor, Child and Vulnerable Protection Project, who made a presentation during the event, called for measures to guarantee the safety and protection of children.

He said global trends such as climate change, migration and urbanisation were all increasing children’s vulnerability, hence the need for government and other stakeholders to prioritise investing in their safety.

He said, “We must strive for a world where children can grow up safely in their families and be free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.”

Mr Issaka announced that the project had facilitated the formation of Child Rights Clubs in selected schools, training of patrons, documentation and publication of the Diocesan Child Protection Policy, and training of diocesan stakeholders on child protection, among others.

He called for collaboration between relevant stakeholders to improve the quality of life for children and other vulnerable adults.

Miss Thompson Sandra Amana, member of the Child Rights Club at Ando-Nyamanu Roman Catholic Primary School, commended the Catholic Diocese of Yendi for the initiative, and said it had helped to build her confidence and self-esteem to pursue her academic goals.
