Elon Musk reportedly told Twitter that he will not lay off 75% of his employees.

Layoffs are still expected under Musk, but they may not be as devastating as previously reported.

Elon Musk posted a video of himself carrying a kitchen sink into Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters. “Let that sink in,” he wrote. He may have also spoken with employees and denied reports that he intends to fire the majority of them once he officially takes over as company owner, possibly on Friday. According to Bloomberg, he told Twitter employees that he does not intend to lay off 75% of the company’s 7,500 employees, as previously reported by The Washington Post.

Musk is still expected to order layoffs. During a Twitter Town Hall meeting in June, he said he didn’t know why low-performing workers should remain employed. But job cuts were going to happen even if Musk completely backed out of purchasing the website anyway. Based on internal documents obtained by The Post, current company leadership was planning a 25 percent workforce reduction, which translates to 1,900 people losing their jobs. Executives were also planning major infrastructure cuts and data center closures.

Musk’s Twitter purchase is on track to close by Friday, but it was in limbo for a long while. The executive had wanted to back out of his $44 billion purchase, accusing the company of withholding data that would give him a clearer picture of how many bots and fake accounts are on the website. Twitter, in turn, sued Musk and accused him of wrongfully breaking the agreement. Earlier this month, though, Musk decided to go ahead with the deal, and Twitter agreed with his proposal before their case could go to trial.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make a donation to flood victims in Nigeria.

The Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Foundation has given an undisclosed sum to charities in Nigeria to “help provide relief following devastating flooding” that has ravaged parts of the country.

This comes after Duchess Sussex, 41, revealed last year that she is 43 percent Nigerian after taking a genealogy test. This was stated in her most recent Archetypes Podcast series, which was released on Tuesday.

A Spotify representative confirmed in a press release accompanying the episode that the couple’s Archewell Foundation donated to Save the Children and UNICEF.

The devastating floods have been blamed on heavy rain and water released from a dam in neighbouring Cameroon.

More than 600 people have been killed and around 1.4 million have been displaced in the floods which destroyed 440,000 hectares of farmland across Nigeria.

Save the Children Nigeria tweeted: “More than 1.5 million children are at risk after devastating flooding in Nigeria.

“Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Foundation has donated to Save the Children in Nigeria as our teams deliver life-saving supplies to affected families.”

Ghana and Ivory Coast are boycotting a cocoa meeting in Brussels over farmer pay issues.

Ghana and Ivory Coast, the world’s top cocoa producers, are boycotting World Cocoa Foundation meetings on cocoa sustainability this Wednesday and Thursday in Brussels (October 26 and 27).

Authorities in both West African countries accuse multinational chocolate companies and traders of obstructing measures to increase the incomes of cocoa farmers.

The grievances of Ghana and Ivory Coast concern the Living Income Differential (LID), which is set at $400 per tonne and charged on top of world prices.

The LID was implemented in 2019 to guarantee cocoa farmers a minimum price, thereby increasing farmers’ incomes, many of whom are impoverished.

But commodity traders set a negative differential for the two nations at 260 dollars per tonne.

In July 2022 a further decision was taken to no longer sell their cocoa with negative country differentials.

Both countries account for about two-thirds of global cocoa production, but farmers in those countries earn less than 6% of revenues in a chocolate industry valued at more than $100 billion a year.

Arguing that farmers have always been given a raw deal when it comes to pricing, four civil society organizations in Ghana and Ivory Coast have thrown their weight behind the boycott.

The World Cocoa Foundation, a group representing 80% of the global market, says its 2022 meetings are to discuss steps to improve farmer pay, combat child labor and end deforestation linked to cultivation of the crop.

The American Embassy in Johannesburg issues a threat statement.

0

On Wednesday, the South African authorities received a warning from the U.S. embassy about a potential attack on Saturday against “massive gatherings” in northern Johannesburg.

The alert, which was posted on the embassy’s website and widely disseminated on social media, stated that “the U.S. government has received information that terrorists may be planning to carry out an attack targeting large gatherings in the area around Sandton,” a wealthy suburb to the north of the historic city center.

The advisory states that embassy staff has been instructed to stay away from crowds in that area of the metropolitan area the next weekend. “There is no further information regarding the timing, manner, or target of this prospective attack,” it says.

In response, the South African presidency noted the US’s “terror alert” was part of “the US government’s standard communication to its citizens”.

The presidency said it was the responsibility of the South African security forces to ensure security and safety for all people in the country.

It said law enforcement agencies were monitoring any threats to the citizens and the nation.

“Should the need arise, the South African government will be the first to inform the public about any imminent threat,” the presidency said in a statement.

A minister in the presidency was quoted by local media on Wednesday as saying that the “alarm has been going on but up to this point it is not backed up by any evidence”.

More than 1,000 South African troops have been fighting in neighboring Mozambique since July 2021, helping the army deal with armed jihadist groups that have been wreaking havoc for the past five years, killing 4,300 people and displacing a million.

On Monday, several Western embassies, including that of the United States, advised their citizens to limit their travel to Nigeria because of the increased threat of terrorist attacks.

In Kiev, the president of ECOWAS pledges to “strategic partnership”

President Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the day after visiting Russia, where he also had a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, making him the first African leader to travel to Kiev since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Embalo emphasized that Guinea-Bissau is still a steadfast ally of Ukraine and Russia.

“Russia is currently a strategic partner, just as Ukraine is also one of our partners, I assert. That is why, despite the fact that there is a war between Russia and Ukraine right now, I said yesterday that Russia is still our strategic partner.”

The Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) current president, Mr. Embalo, declared that Africa “carries peace and wants to bring the two brotherly countries together.”

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine said that as of today, Russia is blocking 170 ships with grain for African and Asian countries.

“In November, we must do everything to prevent Russia from disrupting our food exports. Otherwise it will provoke a price explosion in the food market, a new worsening of living conditions for millions of people. As of today, 170 ships carrying grain for Africa and Asia are blocked by Russia.”

At the press conference, Zelenskyy said a prerequisite for talks would be Russia´s recognition of Ukraine´s territory, borders and sovereignty.

The two sides have managed limited cooperation on certain issues, such as the exchange of prisoners of war and repatriation of remains.

Mr Embalo also assured that he would “ask” the Russian President “to release” the more than 165 ships blocked near the Bosphorus Strait, while Ukraine accuses Russia of deliberately delaying these ships intended for the transport of cereals by prolonging inspections carried out in accordance with an agreement reached on these deliveries which are crucial for many countries in Africa and Asia.

Burkina Faso establishes a government on a “war footing.”

Following the latest coup in the jihadist-torn Sahel state, Burkina Faso’s new government declared on Wednesday that its top priority would be to secure the country’s territory.

A UN envoy warned in New York that 4.9 million people, or one-fifth of the population, in Burkina Faso require immediate assistance because “mothers were forced to feed their children with leaves and salt.”

At the first cabinet meeting chaired by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power this month, Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyelem de Tembela outlined the nation’s priorities.

“The government has been formed on a war footing. It is not a government of gala dinners “Tembela stated in Ouagadougou, the capital.

“The main and priority objective is securing the territory,” Tembela said.

“The second will be to do what is needed to improve the quality of life for the Burkina people,” he said.

The third aim will be to “improve the system of governance”, he added.

“Every Burkinabe who calls himself a patriot can contribute,” the prime minister said.

Named premiere on Friday, the 64-year-old lawyer heads a 23-member government — including three military officers and five women — to lead the country until its promised return to civilian rule.

Of the key positions in the cabinet unveiled late Tuesday, Colonel Kassoum Coulibaly was appointed minister of defence and military veterans, a key post in a country ravaged by jihadist violence.

The two other officers are Colonel Boukare Zoungrana who oversees territorial administration, decentralisation, and security, and Colonel Augustin Kabore for the environment.

– ‘Leaves and salt’ diet –

Five ministers in the previous government under Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who was toppled in the latest coup, have stayed on.

Traore mounted the coup at the head of group of disgruntled junior officers on September 30, although his tussle for control with Damiba lasted several days.

He was sworn in as interim president last Friday, vowing to win back territory and support a transition leading to elections in July 2024. At 34, he is the world’s youngest leader.

Damiba, who has fled to Togo, had seized power only in January, forcing out elected president Roch Marc Christian Kabore.

The motive for both coups was anger at failures to stem a seven-year jihadist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and driven nearly two million people from their homes.

More than a third of the national territory remains outside government control.

On Monday, at least 10 soldiers were killed and 50 wounded in Djibo, a northern city that has been under a jihadist blockade for three months.

The authorities have launched a drive to recruit 50,000 civilian defence volunteers to help the army fight the militants.

UN envoy Martin Griffiths painted an alarming picture of Djibo, whose population has tripled to 300,000 with people displaced by jihadist attacks.

“There were no goods in the market,” as little food could grow in the area and cattle had been driven out, the undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs said in New York following a trip to Djibo.

“Mothers were forced to feed their children with leaves and salt,” he said.

But trees were becoming bare and women were now risking “attacks, rape, and death” to travel to nearby villages under cover of darkness to find leaves for their “sick and hungry children,” he said.

Dozens of other parts of Burkina Faso, he added, were experiencing a similar fate.

He spoke of “road closures due to the presence of armed groups, leaving people without food, medicine, and other vital services.”

Even though the UN had been able to provide food to 1.8 million people this year, he said, “Nearly 4.9 million men, women and children in Burkina Faso ….need urgent assistance.”

That amounts to more than a fifth of the population.

And nearly 10 percent have been forced to leave their homes.

0
  • Vini Jr glad he could help Benzema win Ballon d’Or
  • Picks UCL final goal vs Liverpool as favourite
  • Wants to stay at Real Madrid long-term

WHAT HAPPENED? Vinicius Jr has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence at Real Madrid, forging a formidable partnership with Benzema along the way. The Frenchman recently won the Ballon d’Or but couldn’t have done so without Vinicius’ creativity alongside him and the Brazilian has spoken about their connection.

WHAT HE SAID: Speaking to GOAL as he was announced as the newest ambassador for Pepsi MAX, Vinicius revealed his favourite aspect of his relationship with Benzema, saying: “I think everything. Karim teaches me a lot every day and I do everything so that he can score a lot of goals like last season. He is a person who has helped me a lot and I try to help him a lot on the pitch. After playing with Cristiano [Ronaldo] for so long, being the star of the team is very important for him and I am happy to be able to help him.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: The winger has had his fair share of goals over the past year and none were more important than his strike against Liverpool in the Champions League final in May. “For sure it’s my favourite goal and the most important one,” he said about the effort that ultimately won his side the trophy. “It’s the goal I dreamed about so much. Scoring in the Champions League final was very nice but I don’t want to stop here, I want to keep doing many things and keep making history in the biggest club in the world.”

AND WHAT’S MORE: Real Madrid fans can sleep happy at night knowing Vinicius wants to stay around as long as possible in the Spanish capital, despite constant transfer speculation. When asked where he sees himself in five years time, Vinicius said: “At Madrid. I’m sure I can continue playing here for a long time. Both myself and the rest of the young players who are with us now: [Eduardo] Camavinga, Rodrygo, Fede [Valverde], [Aurelien] Tchouameni, [Eder] Militao…we have a very good squad now and in three/four years’ time it will be much better.”

WHAT NEXT FOR VINICIUS JR? The Brazilian will be hoping to add to what has been a stellar year already when he heads to the World Cup with his fellow countrymen. Brazil are one of the favourites for the tournament and Vinicius’ link-up with Neymar may be vital in them achieving greatness in Qatar. However, Vinicius must stay focused on club duties for now, with Madrid set to play Girona in their next La Liga outing on Sunday.

Pedri admits that Barcelona ‘lacks many things’ and ‘doesn’t deserve’ to be in the Champions League.

0
  • Barca knocked out before they could play
  • Pedri admits weaknesses in side
  • Financial woes grow for Blaugrana

WHAT HAPPENED? Inter’s win against Viktoria Plzen ensured Barcelona were dumped out of the Champions League group stages for a second season in a row. The Blaugrana have won just one of their five matches in the competition this season and are now doomed to Europa League football in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign. Barca’s misery was compounded by a 3-0 loss at home to Bayern Munich and Pedri was in no mood for excuses after the game.

WHAT HE SAID: The midfielder told Movistar: “Of course, it’s a failure, Barca have to get out of the group and they haven’t because we didn’t deserve to continue in the Champions League. We are a very young team, with a lot of room for improvement, we have made great signings, but it has not been enough for us enough to compete in the Champions League and it’s a great disappointment.

“We lack many things, but we have to be self-critical. It is true that in Munich we deserved more, in Milan there were a couple of circumstances… but after seeing what happened today it has been seen that we are not prepared to compete in the Champions League.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Not only is the elimination a catastrophe for Barca on the pitch, but off it as well. The result plunges the Spanish giants into deeper financial trouble after the board reportedly planned this season’s budget on Xavi guiding his team to a Champions League quarter-final.

WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA? The Blaugrana will be hoping to shake off the disappointment of European elimination as they host Valencia in La Liga on October 29.
