Fixing The Country Movement to picket at Mahama Office on Thursday

0

The Fixing The Country Movement, a political pressure group, is set to picket at the Offices of Former President John Mahama and the Special Prosecutor on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

The group will be picketing at the offices in its demand for prosecution of persons involved in an “Airbus bribery scandal.”

Mr Ernest Owusu Bempah, Convenor of the group, said they were not happy with the lackadaisical nature of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on the case, hence their decision to picket at the two  offices to register their displeasure.

“The European aircraft manufacturer has admitted paying bribes in Ghana when it sold a three-military aircraft to the country, dating back to 2009 -2015.”

“As a matter of fact, the company admitted hiring a relative of the Former President as its consultant in the sale of the aircraft. However, the OSP is lackadaisical to prosecute the persons involved,” he stressed.

Mr Bempah said they wanted the  OSP to open a thorough enquiry on the Airbus corruption, saying, they believed the  former President was culpable in the scandal.

The Convener said the Ghana Police Service had given them the green light to picket and the route to the offices.

He added that per the agreement with the Police, they would commence their picketing movement at the Efua Sunderland Park at 0900 hours before moving to the OSP office, then through Cantonments where they would be picketing at a 300-metre distance from the Office of Former President Mahama.

Mr Bempah said they were not perturbed by threats they had received from some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over their picketing.

He added that the picketing was their constitutional and legal right that no one could deny them of it so far it was done in the consonance with the law.

“We are law abiding citizens and will not be moved by these antics by some unscrupulous persons. We will exercise our legal land constitutional rights without fear of anyone,” he stressed.

Women aspirants can’t find money for district level elections campaign.

0

With less than a month to the district-level elections, scheduled for December 19, 2023, most female aspirants are not finding financial resources to execute their campaign.

This came to light during a Ghana News Agency (GNA) interaction with some women aspirants at a training workshop organized by the Alliance for Women in Media Africa, (AWMA) with funding support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

An Aspirant and incumbent Assemblywoman for Kokomlemle West Electoral Area, Linda Mirekua Ansong, shared her experience of facing rejections for funding requests by companies located in her community.

“If the companies situated in my electoral area will recognise the efforts, I am making to help the people in my community, and support me financially when I go to them, at least a little percentage of their social responsibility could go a long way but I have written letters upon letters to some of them but to no avail.”

She said funding would significantly contribute to provide skills training opportunities for the numerous unemployed youths in the area, which would in turn help her campaign.

“In Kokomlemle West Electoral area, a substantial number of unemployed youths express a willingness to undergo skills training, particularly in fields like dressmaking, hairdressing, or makeup artistry. However, financial constraints hinder their access to these professional training opportunities as fees are required, so if the companies can help me access funds I could do more because am already doing it with my little resources.”

According to Linda, despite being an unpaid Assembly Member, she has initiated beneficial programs such as breast screening, health insurance registration, and community-wide SIM card registration.

She said, “I do organise end of year party for the under privileged children in my Electoral Area but none of the companies located there have once supported my efforts.”

She questioned the effectiveness of companies’ social responsibility initiatives in their host communities if they were unable to collaborate with the local Assembly Member.

Barbara Naa Shormey Palm, a first-time aspirant for the Awudome Electoral Area, said she contributed to community development through the provision of skills training in liquid soap and detergent making.

She said her initiative of providing adult education to her community could positively impact the community if she is elected.

She acknowledged the challenges faced by women aspirants in obtaining funding for campaigns and appealed to well-to-do community members to support female candidates in their electoral area, emphasizing that their support would be crucial in ensuring development in the communities.

The workshop, was on the theme, “Enhancing Inclusive Participation in Local Governance in Ghana Through Capacity-building for Journalists and Female Political Aspirants,”

It is aimed to empower female aspirants and journalists by enhancing their communication skills for more compelling messages in their campaigns and gender sensitive reporting, respectively.

Despite several ratifications by Ghana to promote gender equality, women seeking political office in continue to face challenges that hinder their potential to amplify their voices and contribute to decision-making at the grassroots level.

Without sufficient funds, women candidates may struggle to organize rallies, reach out to constituents, and deploy effective communication strategies—all of which are essential components of a successful political campaign.

PMAWCA preparing ports to support Africa free trade

0

Mr. Jean Marie Koffi, the Secretary General of the Ports Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), has said that the association is preparing ports in its jurisdiction to support the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Mr. Koffi said that as part of the preparation, a key initiative was to guide member ports to harmonise procedures for the export and import of originating products.

Speaking at a Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s (GPHA) media platform forum, he said his outfit was optimistic that intra-Africa trade had the potential to alleviate poverty among over 100 million Africans.

He noted that PMAWCA believed in the simplification of administrative and customs procedures, as well as the elimination of bureaucracy, adding that there was a need to ensure that port infrastructures in the region were fitted for purpose, serving as trade hubs powered by modern technology.

He said historically, shipping had proven to be the most reliable mode of transporting commercial quantities of goods in the world, adding that currently, more than 80 percent of such goods were still said to be conveyed via the seaport.

He stated that this demonstrated the continued significance of ports and shipping in international trade, adding, however, that it was sad that ports on the African continent, despite increased investment and development, were yet to be taken full advantage of in relation to the free trade agreement.

Mr. Louis Yaw Afful, the Executive Director of AfCFTA Policy Network (APN), acknowledged the significance of ports in recording success in the aims of AfCFTA, saying that was why his outfit had termed the ports “the bellies of the entire AfCFTA agreement.”

Mr. Afful said member states must set aside funding to develop their ports in line with global advancements in technology and recognise that port operations are a key ingredient of the infrastructure required for AfCFTA trading.

He praised Ghana’s paperless agenda to automate port processes, in addition to the billions of dollars of investment sunk into infrastructural developments at the ports and called for continued commitment in this regard.

Tax reliefs alone not enough to expand local production – Prof Gatsi

0

Prof John Gatsi, the Dean of School of Business of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has downplayed the tax reliefs offered to local setups to bolster local production in the 2024 budget statement.

He said while it was laudable to use fiscal policy to incentivise production, such incentives must go beyond tax reliefs to absorb other costs critical to production to achieve the desired result.

He added that the taxes would not bring immediate relief.

“It doesn’t take tax incentives alone for people to set up factories. For instance, how much electricity are they paying for? What is the cost of other inputs that they are going to use?” he queried.

The economist was reacting to the 2024 Budget Statement delivered in Parliament by Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The finance minister announced a raft of tax waivers including import duties on raw materials for the local manufacture of sanitary pads; VAT on locally produced sanitary pads, and duties on semi-knocked down and completely knocked down electric vehicles.

He also announced tax waivers for the importation of agricultural machinery equipment and inputs and medical consumables and raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry.

Prof Gatsi indicated that the tax relief for the local production of sanitary pads, was not enough to immediately expand production capacity to meet demand and bring the needed relief.

“The situation will continue in 2024. So, what it means is that, for 2024, we will still have our market flooded with imported sanitary pads,” he cautioned.

“If this continues to be the case, then we are talking about 2025 thereabout but as to whether we will have the full capacity to feed the domestic market is something that will be contested,” he added.

To effectively encourage local production and consumption, Prof Gatsi opined that a complete ban on the importation of sanitary pads or an increase in the taxes on same would have been more prudent.

“It is not bad to try to incentivise domestic production, but you cannot incentivise domestic production while you are encouraging importation of the same item.

“If you are not encouraging importation of the item, you would have increased the import duty on the importation while you give tax incentives for domestic production,” Prof Gatsi added.

Rafael Leao discusses his friendship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the San Siro dressing room as the AC Milan player discloses

0

The AC Milan player Rafael Leao has disclosed his best buddy in the San Siro locker room as well as his friendship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Portugal international claims that Ibrahimovic never approached him after he had a good game. However, Leao did receive some valuable advice from the former striker regarding dribbling and ball control.

The 24-year-old had a good relationship with Ibrahimovic before the Swede’s retirement, but also revealed that he considers Algerian midfielder Ismael Bennacer to be his closest friend at Milan.

Leao has been playing for AC Milan since 2019 and was an integral part in the club’s run to Serie A glory 2021-22 season alongside Ibrahimovic. At the age of 41, a tearful Ibrahimovic announced his retirement from football in June this year in front of AC Milan fans at San Siro.

Speaking on the 19F podcast, Leao said of his relationship with Ibrahimovic: “When I played well, he wouldn’t speak to me. Only when I played badly. He concentrated on the details a lot, he wasn’t interested in dribbling. Sometimes he would tell me: ‘Rafa, you have to control it like this and immediately take it towards the goal. With your talent, you can’t make mistakes with a touch like that.’”

When asked who he considers his best friend at San Siro, the player replied: “(Ismael) Bennacer. I’ve got a great relationship with him, he’s my brother.”

The attacker is currently out of action due to a hamstring injury he suffered during Milan’s Serie A clash against Lecce. Leao was not included in Portugal’s squad for their final Euro 2024 qualifying games and it remains to be seen if he can regain fitness before his club’s upcoming match against Fiorentina on Saturday.

Harry Kane is a sensation for Bayern Munich! Bundesliga winners anticipate setting a record-breaking new jersey sales record by Christmas following the striker’s stunning €100 million debut at Allianz Arena.

0

Harry Kane is making quite the impact at Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga giants expecting their star striker to shatter shirt sales records.

The prolific England captain ended his long-standing relationship with Premier League team Tottenham during the summer transfer window by moving to the Allianz Arena for €100 million (£87 million/$109 million). Kane has made history by scoring 21 goals in 16 games, including three hat-tricks. He has had an immediate impact in Germany.

It is not just on the field that Kane is causing a stir, though, with Bayern benefiting considerably from his marketing appeal. On the weekend that the 30-year-old frontman moved to Bavaria, 20,000 No.9 jerseys bearing his name were shifted.

That was a record in itself, while Bayern enjoyed their best ever day on the general sales front when Kane was announced – beating their previous high after winning the Champions League in 2020. According to kicker, the club now expects to have sold more than 100,000 Kane shirts before Christmas.

No player in Bayern’s history has ever achieved those numbers, with Kane set to break through the six-figure barrier and keep on rising through to the end of the 2023-24 campaign. The Bundesliga champions announced revenue of €110m (£96m/$120m) from merchandising for the 2022-23 season, with those figures set to soar now that Kane is on their books.

Fernando Diniz claims that Brazil is afraid of Lionel Messi’s “decision-making power” before their 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Argentina.

0

Fernando Diniz has admitted his Brazil side are worried about Lionel Messi ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Argentina.

Argentina and Brazil, arch rivals, will square off in a pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium.

Prior to the epic match, Brazil’s coach Diniz exercised caution when he said that his team is concerned about playing against a player of Messi’s calibre, citing the Argentine star’s “decision-making” as their key area of worry.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Selecao have had a rough start to their campaign in 2026 World Cup qualifying with just two wins from their first five matches. The five-time champions are currently fifth, five points behind La Albiceleste, who are leading the table.

Diniz will miss the service of Vinicius Jr, who is out of action with a muscle problem. His place upfront is likely to be taken by Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus, with the striker set to be back in action after almost a month out injured.

WHAT FERNANDO DINIZ SAID

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Brazil head coach said: “Sure, you can’t not worry about a player of that magnitude. But we have to play our game as we try to contain all the creative capacity he has. Dealing with Messi is obviously different and you have to worry. It’s impossible not to worry about a player of his stature and the decision-making power he has.”

WHAT NEXT FOR LIONEL MESSI?

The 36-year-old Ballon d’Or winner will enjoy a well-deserved break after the qualifying games are over. His club Inter Miami could play a pre-season friendly against his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys in 2024, before the new MLS season gets underway.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez maintains that despite his lacklustre performance against Iceland, Cristiano Ronaldo is “still as hungry for goals as an 18-year-old.”

Roberto Martinez has insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo is “still as hungry for goals as an 18-year-old” despite his ineffective showing against Iceland.

Portugal defeated Iceland 2-0 in their final match to end their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a perfect record. Martinez’s team won all three points thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Ricardo Horta, but Ronaldo had a difficult game in the last third of the pitch.

Ronaldo was largely ineffective against Iceland and missed a golden chance from three yards out before Horta tapped in the rebound to wrap up Portugal’s victory. Still, the 38-year-old striker did manage to hit 10 goals through his nine appearances in the Group J qualifiers, and Martinez is confident that he hasn’t lost his edge.

Quizzed on Ronaldo’s performance after the game, Portugal boss Martinez told reporters: “Cristiano Ronaldo is as hungry as an 18-year-old player. He is a role model, he always tries to be in the right position and is looking for the goal.”

The respect the Portugal squad has for Ronaldo was underlined by a gesture from Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio after the final whistle. As per The Sun, The Al-Nassr star gave away his shirt to an opposition player and substitute Patricio then offered him his coat to stay warm.

The Portugal captain will be in line to start when Luis Castro’s team take on Al-Akhdoud on Friday, and will be hoping to add to his haul of 13 goals in the 2023-24 competition.

The next NDC administration would lift the restriction on the importation of secondhand automobiles, according to Mahama.

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the next NDC administration will lift the restriction on used car importation.

He stated that this action intends to provide additional job prospects for young people in the motor business.

In 2020, the government announced intentions to prevent the importation of secondhand automobiles older than ten years old, as well as a total ban on salvaged cars, sometimes known as ‘accident cars,’ pending the final enactment of the Customs Amendment Bill.

Addressing artisans and traders at the Techiman Magazine, Mr. Mahama urged the government to consider procuring a significant portion of the newly assembled vehicles from automobile assembly companies in the country.

“There are vehicle assembly plants owned by foreigners with the goal of assembling vehicle parts and selling brand-new cars to Ghanaians. The affordability of these new cars is a challenge for many Ghanaians; the government should play a role in addressing this issue by purchasing a significant portion of these locally assembled cars.”

“Given the substantial demand for vehicles in the government sector, such a move could contribute to the profitability of these companies. Recognizing the financial constraints faced by ordinary Ghanaians in affording new cars, the NDC plans to eliminate the proposed ban on the importation of used vehicles,” John Dramani Mahama assured.

Bagbin chastises the IMF for alleged pressure to enact certain laws under a certificate of urgency.

0

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of putting pressure on the House to enact a number of laws under a certificate of urgency.

Mr. Bagbin mentioned measures like the Affirmative Action Bill, which is supposedly being pushed by the IMF as a requirement for the rest of Ghana’s $3 billion loan facility.

Alban Bagbin, speaking at the Speaker’s Breakfast Meeting on Monday, stressed that the House will not be forced to support the measure by the IMF.

“Even in this budget, you can see the arm of the IMF in a lot of provisions in the budget. A critical bill like the Affirmative Action Gender Equality Bill has come to Parliament under a certificate of urgency. Please, it won’t happen; we won’t pass it under a certificate of urgency.”

“There are critical stakeholders we must consult and make sure we go together. We will not be dictated by the IMF; that one, you can be assured. This is a very critical bill that the IMF should know that we need the buy-in of the stakeholders to be able to implement it,” Alban Bagbin said.

The Affirmative Action Bill, when passed into law, would seek to expunge the historically low representation of women in decision-making spaces and promote democracy and development through all-inclusive participation.
